Favorites Win Under Friday Night Lights

Friday Night Football on the Central Coast

The favorites did the lion's share of the winning Friday night.

In the Pac-7 Atascadero crunched Lompoc 35-0 to push their league record to 3-0 and Paso Robles shut down Arroyo Grande 34-0 to do the same. In the only upset of the evening Righetti came from behind to defeat San Luis Obispo 33-20.

The standings:

Atascadero 3-0
Paso Robles 3-0
San Luis Obispo 2-2
Arroyo Grande 1-2
Righetti 1-2
Lompoc 0-4

Los Padres League

Templeton leapfrogged from fifth place into a tie for third with a 21-7 victory over Cabrillo. St. Joseph had no trouble with Morro Bay winning 41-0. The same was true of Pioneer Valley at Santa Maria-- the Panthers won 37-6. In the only nailbiter of the evening Nipomo notched its first league victory with a 38-32 win over Santa Ynez.

The standings--

St. Joseph 6-0
Pioneer Valley 4-1
Morro Bay 3-2
Templeton 3-2
Cabrillo 3-3
Nipomo 1-4
Santa Ynez 1-4
Santa Maria 0-5

Lompoc's only remaining chance at a CIF playoff berth lies with Cabrillo which faces a must-win game next Friday against Morro Bay. With a victory the Conquistadores would saddle the Pirates with their third loss of the season and would hold the advantage should the two teams finish 4-3. Templeton, with Pioneer Valley and Nipomo remaining on the schedule, might end up 4-3 as well and the Eagles would have the edge over Cabrillo with tonight's victory. Morro Bay faces tough Pioneer in its finale. If Cabrillo, Templeton and Morro Bay all finish 4-3 the two playoff berths would be determined by chance.

Brrrrrrrrr.....

It's getting cold out there folks - bundle up for Friday's games. The Cabrillo girls varsity was definitely feeling the effects of the cold and wind while watching Ashley Pennewell on Thursday.

LPL Girls Tennis
Morro Bay 4 @ Cabrillo 14 [Ryon Park]
Rollin', rollin', rollin'. That's what the Cabrillo squad keeps doing - this time they rolled 14-4 over the visiting Morro Bay Pirates. The doubles units were superb, winning 54- 4 in games while taking all nine sets. Ashley Pennewell swept at #1 singles, although she was pushed in the last set of the day. After taking a 4-3 lead, she lost two games in a row to the Pirate's Megan Hansen. Clearly disgusted with that development, she promptly won the next two games under the lights, to take the set. Julie Leyva won two sets. Click on the image to see the complete results.

Templeton 7 @ Lompoc 11
The #1's did the job on Thurday. Paty Martinez (# 1 singles) and Dana Campitelli / Maria Morales (# 1 doubles) both swept three sets. It was a satisfying win for the Braves who lost to the Eagles in the first LPL round this season 9-9 (84-85).

Junior Varsity
The JV squad had a rough time visiting with the Templeton Eagles dropping the match 13-5. They did most of their best work in doubles, winning 4 sets and only being outscored 40-31 in games. The combination of Ashley Branson & Azucena Villalobos swept (6-3, 6-3, 6-1), and Isabel Anguiano / Rosa Carreno won a set 6-3. Emily Tremblay won the sole singles set (6-4) for the Braves, and lost a second one 6-4.

Santa Ynez 9 (76) @ St Joseph 9 (70)
The Santa Ynez singles line-up was in tatters. Singles # 1 Nathalia Chaddad, an exchange student from Brazil, who hasn't lost a league set, was out with a bad back, and # 2 Lauren Gerlach (leg injury) could only play one set. So what do you do if you are the Santa Ynez Pirates ? Plug in some subs, who have been playing most of the year anyway, and win the Los Padres League tennis championship over the St Joseph Knights. Among the whipping winds on Thursday the teams tied 9-9, but the Pirates held a 76 -70 advantage in total games over the Knights who finish the LPL race in 2nd place.

In doubles for the Pirates, it was the usual suspects - Lauren Swift / Emily Ineman swept three sets, while Erica Schroeder / Alisa Silsbee, and Katie Manser / Brittany Feighner each won two sets. The Knight's #2 duo, Victoria Thomas / Kayla Zimmer, earned two doubles points.

In singles, the Knight's were led by senior Ane' McPike, who swept 6-1, 6-0, 6-1. New Pirate #1 Louise Gyllenram, an exchange student from Sweden, exacted a measure of revenge for her loss to McPike by beating her sister - freshman Ellie McPike (6-1). The younger McPike, however, won her other two sets.

One of those sets was a pretty good match-up. Gerlach's replacement, Sophie Brandstatter, was down 5-2 to McPike, and fought back to a tiebreaker but lost it 7-4 . But the 'Match of the Day' was a 7-6 (14-12) first-round Zimmer / Thomas - Schroeder / Silsbee match that the St Joe duo managed to pull out.

On Tuesday (4 Nov) - End of League Duals

The Braves [3-8, 5-9] conclude LPL Duals play next Tuesday at home against Santa Maria who had the League Bye .
Cabrillo hosts the Santa Ynez Pirates [17-2, 11-0 LPL], Morro Bay [4-10, 3-8 LPL] tangles with Templeton, and St Joseph [12-3, 10-2 LPL] plays a non-league contest versus Paso Robles.

The League Finals Tournaments are on 7 Nov 2008.

LPL Girls Volleyball

St Joseph @ Cabrillo
Cabrillo made it interesting, but St. Joseph held them off, winning 3-0 (25-13, 25-23, 25-8) at the Cabrillo Gymnasium.

The Knights showed up early in game 1 - taking 8-2, and 14-3 leads. Dayna Drewniak's run of six straight serves, including three consecutive aces, helped push the Knights lead to 24-8. Cabrillo stiffened, however, with Kelly O'Connell serving six in a row and cutting the advantage to 24-13 before Drewniak "kill'ed it.

Game 2 was a see-saw affair. The Conqs took a few three point leads early, but the St. Joseph answered with a pair of brief leads of their own. Tied at 20, the Knights earned the 41st point of the game, 21-20 and adde another on Aly Beebe's block to make it 22-20. At set point (24-21), Drewniak served long. Cabrillo responded with an Ashley Bonenfant ace to and were back within one. After a St. Joseph time-out, the Knight's Lizzy Mitchell ended game two with a kill.

The Knights ran away with game 3. Leading 8-4, they got an Beebe side-out block to set up seving runs by Alexis Dudley (5 ) and Mariah Vail (4). This resulted in an 11 point (17-6) St Joseph advantage they never relinquished.

Jessica Farley led Cabrillo with (12 kills, 4 blocks), while Dana Drewniak led the St. Joseph kill parade. She had 10, Aly Beebe had 6 (plus 7 blocks), Natasha Kolbo also had 6, followed by Lizzy Mitchell's five.

Junior Varsity/ Frosh
JV Coach Jennifer Smith writes "We won in two games (25-12, 25-16). The whole team played great together. Colby Edman had 5 aces, Summer Galvin had 7 solo blocks, Caitlin Harvey-Morgan had 8 digs and Kristina Goodchild had 9 digs and 5 kills!"

Frosh Coach Sandy Hawtrey tells LLR that the Frosh girls played "excellent all-around defense. The passing was really good." They won in straight sets.

Santa Ynez 3, Templeton 0
It was Seniors Night at Santa Ynez on Thursday, and the Pirates (16-2, 10-0 LPL) celebrated by sweeping the Eagles 25-18, 25-23, 25-8 . Offensively, the Pirates recieved 13 kills from Courtney Martin, and Caitlin Wright added nine. Defensively, Nicole Tomasini had another good defensive match - good passing, six digs, and two aces. French foreign exchange student Ailine Moche also had a good night from the service line.

Morro Bay 3, Santa Maria 0
The Pirates (6-8, 6-4 LPL) took down the Saints in three games, winning 25-7, 25-12, 25-9.
Morro Bay was led by Sara Hoversten's seven kills and six aces, while Lorna Porter had 17 assists and five aces - both team-highs .

Lompoc had the League Bye and did not play a match today, but lost a 3-0 decision at Mission Prep on Wednesday.

Next week:
Tuesday [4 Nov] - St. Joseph [9-2 LPL] takes on first-place Santa Ynez, Cabrillo [6-4 LPL] hosts Morro Bay [6-4 LPL] for third place, and Lompoc travels to Templeton.

Thursday [6 Nov] - Lompoc visits Santa Maria, Cabrillo has Santa Ynez come to town, Morro Bay meets Templeton, St Joseph has the Bye.

Football
Atascadero @ Lompoc
Junior Varsity
The JV didn't fare so well, falling 31-14 at Huyck Stadium on Thursday. QB Evan Aguilar snuck one across from a yard out in the second quarter, and RB Patrick Hill bounded in from 19 yards out on the first play of the fourth for the Braves TD's. The other two points were scored on a pass from a scrambling Evan Aguilar to the diminutive Dalton Chambers after Hill's TD.

Frosh
The Freshmen won 8-0 in a game that was headed for a 2-0 finish until the Big Train - Aaron "Choo-Choo" Kucharski crashed into the end zone from a yard out with under a minute to play. Lompoc scored the safety when the snap went over the QB's head, he recovered the ball deep in the end zone and ran out the back.

Coast Valleys Youth Football Conference
With the playoffs about to start, the local organisations (Lompoc YFL & Vandenberg Village YFL) are dominating in the the 13 chapter CVYFL.

Bantam [20 Teams] Completed Regular Season
The top of the division is rather crowded with two undefeated teams and four 7-1 squads. Two of those outfits are the Lompoc Rebels (8-0, 4 shutouts, 202-43 points) and the Lompoc Packers (7-1, 6 SO, 221-19). The Five Cities Eagles are the other undefeated unit, and Paso Robles has two teams with one loss. The sixth team ? The 7-1 VV Conqs (3 SO, 164-46). The Conq's lone loss was a 21-13 defeat at the hands of the Paso Robles Cats. The Rebels gave the Paso Robles Bears their only loss 32-6, while Five Cities has a 26-6 win over the PR Cats and a 13-12 squeaker over the Packers. The VV Conquistadors are 0-7-1.

Junior [28 Teams] Completed Regular Season
Once again there are two undefeated and four one-loss teams, the difference being that both squads at the top are from Lompoc. The Lompoc Pistons (8-0, 2 SO, 217-72) have compiled some impressive numbers, but are overshadowed somewhat by the Lompoc Panthers (8-0, 5 SO, 172-20). The one loss teams are from Paso, Atascadero, Santa Maria, and Orcutt. The VV squads, VV Conquistadors & VV Cabrillo, are 3-5 and 1-7 respectively.

Intermediate [21 Teams] Completed Regular Season
This is the only division without at least two local teams atop the leaderboard. Only the VV Cabrillo (6-1, 3 SO, 206-58) squad is among those in Championship contention. The Lompoc Scorpions (3-5), Lompoc Titans (2-6), and VV Conqs (0-8) have all struggled this year, as all three had problems finding points until late in the season. Templeton (8-0) and 5 Cities (7-0) lead the section.

Senior Division [11 Teams]
The Lompoc Braves (7-0, 5 So, 229-18) are vie-ing with the Paso Robles Bearcats (8-0) for the top seed in the upcoming playoffs. The Braves have outscored their opposition 229-18 with 5 shutouts. They play the Orcutt Knights (4-3) in their final regular season contest on Saturday at 3 pm. . The VV Conquistadors are 2-5 and also conclude play on Saturday. --el stato

Pools and Playoff Preparations

LPL Water Polo

Cabrillo 14 @ St Joseph 3 [@ AHC]
The Knights are participating in boys water polo for the first time this year, and although they have shown some improvement over the course of the year it wasn't enough to stop perennially powerful Conqs. Cabrillo improved to 5-1 in the LPL on the strength of 4 goals each by Tyler Chard & Garret Darling and a further three by Brayson Ogan.

Santa Ynez 16 @ Lompoc 9 [at COLAC]
Accurate shooting, great goal tending, and a deadly counter-attack ultimately did in the Braves. The Pirates had 16 goals on only 28 shots, sophomore net-minder Adam Taylor had 15 saves, and the visitors scored most of their 2nd half goals on 2-3 man break-aways on the counter. Taylor is getting to be quite at home in the COLAC water, after dominating Cabrillo on the 15th, and the Braves on Wednesday.

The Pirates jumped out to an early lead on goals by Elijah Ozimec, Stanford Nash, and Taylor Riva. Michael Ostrander answered for the Braves at the end of the first, and Kyle Pickles at the top of the second to get Lompoc back close (3-2). Unfortunately, Ozimec, Riva, & Dustin Alker hit on three in a row, before Pickles was able to break the rally just before the half.

The 6-3 halftime advantage quickly ballooned to 8-3 before Pickles picked up the hat trick and Daniel Dunaetz scored 40 seconds later. Brice Small countered with one for the Pirates, but Dunaetz drilled in two for the Braves to cut it to 9-7. That was as close as they would get - two quick ones at the end of the third, and a 5-2 margin, mostly off the counter, in the fourth closed out the Braves.

Goal scorers for the Braves were Dunaetz (4), Pickles (3), and Michael Ostrander (2). Alex Stone, as he has most of the season, had a superb game at the 2M hole position.

The LPL Tournament will begin with all six teams competing on Tuesday at Paul Nelson Pool in Santa Maria, and will conclude with the LPL Finals on Thursday at the COLAC.

Junior Varsity
Similar to the varsity effort, the Braves were able to stay with the junior Pirates for awhile. After Carter Bovee hit his second goal to tie it up at 2-2 early in the second quarter, the Pirates went on a 4 - 0 run before halftime. Goals by Bovee and Ed Pelkey to open the third got Lompoc back into the thick of it, but these Pirates also had a 5-2 fourth to put Lompoc away.

Lefty Carter Bovee had 4 goals, and Ed Pelkey & Dustin Borges each had one. David Barber (photo above) played well in goal.

LPL Girls Golf
Tournament # 6

For the local squads : Paige Hurlbut (CHS) dropped 10 strokes from the last tournament, and Lompoc's Ali Wilson carved off 11 strokes from her score.

LPL Golf Dual Meet

St Joseph @ Lompoc [La Purisima- 9 holes (front)]

With one notable exception the course was the winner of this match-up, as several players carded scores they were not used to seeing. As expected, St Joseph won the contest between the actual competitors 266-350. Also , surprising nobody, the Medalist was Danielle Gilaspy from St. Joseph.

Kaleigh Goethe, who transfered from Michigan, has become the mainstay of the Braves team this year. Shown here modeling the NEW golf bags the team raised money to buy.

Pollinating the World of Sports

Football Alumni

Lydell Sargeant

Penn State's Lydell Sargeant celebrates in the End Zone after intercepting a pass to seal the #3 Nittany Lions [9-0] 13- 6 victory over Ohio St. . The Cabrillo grad picked off his team-leading third swipe with just seconds left in the fourth quarter. Although he did not return this one, he had 55 yards on his two previous take-aways.

The senior, playing only his second year on defense, after a couple years at wide receiver, has 15 tackles (10 solo), 5 pass break-ups, 8 passes defensed, and a fumble recovery. He is the team leader in the last three categories (tied for fumble rec.), despite missing some playing time due to injury.

Vai Taua
The Nevada Wolfpack [4-4, 2-2] fell (38-31) at Hawaii for the 6th consecutive time when Greg Alexander tossed a 24-yard TD pass to Malcolm Lane with 20 seconds left. Vai rushed 16 times for 160 yards and a touchdown – a 79-yard run to open Nevada’s first possession of the second half. That 79-yard run was the longest of his career and it marks Nevada’s longest scoring play of the season. Taua has now topped the 100-yard mark five times this season (and overall in his career).

In 8 games this season, the Cabrillo HS Graduate has rushed 131 times for 896 yards (6.8 ave). He has scored 10 TD's and is averaging 112.0 y/G. He also has 17 receptions for 150 yards (8.8 ave.), 2TD, and a long of 54.

Boo Jackson
Ohio University (2-6, 1-3) let Temple (3-5, 2-3) steal a victory out from under them last Tuesday. The Bobcats held a 10 - 0 lead entering the fourth quarter, but surrendered two TD's in the final period to fall 14 - 10. In those first three quarters Ohio dominated yards, time of possession, and almost every statistical category - but could not consistently score.

Jackson, starting at QB again, had 9 carries. He picked up 43 yards, but also lost 38 for a net of five. Overall, the running game was anemic for the second straight game 47 yards on 29 attempts. Boo was 23 of 40 throwing the ball - for 220 yards (long 31), with neither a TD or a pick. He was sacked twice.

In 8 games this year, he has 67 carries and has gained 297 yards (long =21), and lost 161, for a net of 136 yards (2.0 ave.). He has 1 of Ohio's 6 rushing TDs and is averaging 17.0 y/gm. Passing he is 124-213-8 (58.2 %) for 1557 yards (long= 77) and 9 TDs. Averaging 194.6 y/gm, his passer rating is 126.05 . He leads the team in total offense (211.6 y/gm) with 1693 yards.

Justice Clegg [OL]/ Mike Slaughter [LB]

The Peacocks of Upper Iowa University [1-8] were plucked again - losing their sixth in a row. After a 40-7 loss to Augustana last week, they were at least competitive, but still fell to Concordia -St Paul. It was, as Yogi would say, déjà vu all over again. Last season, Upper Iowa held a 17-13 lead at Concordia only to see a late score steal a win from the Peacocks. This year UPU took a 14-13 lead with just 15 seconds left in the third, only to see the Golden Bears score the only points in the fourth quarter and take the NSIC Southern Division win 23-14.

Slaughter [left],a linebacker, has 23 solo tackles and 17 assists, with 9.5 TFL (49 yds.),and 4.5 SAC's (31 yards). He also picked one off (28 yrd ret), with 1 Break-up and two Passes defensed. Clegg [above left] is an offensive lineman and consequently, and unfortunately, invisible in the school's stat report.

Allan Hancock College

The Bulldogs have now won back-to-back games for the second time this year. The first a narrow 45-42 victory over Pasedena CC at Jackie Robinson Field, in the initial contest between the two schools. And the second, a resounding pounding (40-22) of Moorpark at home.

Brave Gridders Lose, CHS Moves Up; Duffy on TV, Mt SAC

Braves Fall Again

Friday night the Lompoc Brave football team lost its third straight game in Pac-7 League play, this by 16-8 to Arroyo Grande at Huyck Stadium.

The Braves were unable to move the ball until the final quarter when a pass from Rich Hirzel to Nick Brundy put them on the scoreboard for the first time. A two-point conversion Hirzel to Brundy was successful, but it was a case of too little too late.

With an 0-3 start the Braves will not qualify for a CIF playoff berth even if they post wins in their last two contests, Atascadero on Friday and Righetti the following week. They play Cabrillo in their season finale.

A winning season still hangs in the balance. The Braves have matched their four victories of last season but a record of better than .500 is still possible with victories in two of their final three.

Cabrillo on the other hand moved to 3-2 in Los Padres League play by coming from behind to stop Nipomo. Looks like it's time to start paying more attention to the Conquistadores.

AAAAaarrggg.. and a Merry Band of Pirates

Lompoc got the AArrgg from this Merry band of Pirates - The Santa Ynez starting six.

Santa Ynez 3 (8-0, 14-2) Lompoc 0

The Santa Ynez Pirates came to town and enjoyed the health benefits of the Lompoc valley. They were feeling a little bit under the weather after a 3-0 thumping they received from the CIF I-A #1 ranked Dos Pueblos Chargers on Wednesday. They felt better Thursday night after passing the defeat on to the Lompoc Braves in straight sets (25-9, 25-15, 25-14).

Unlike some previous occasions, it was not easy for the Pirates. According to Santa Ynez Head Coach Chip Fenenga the locals played better after a slow start "I think we won that first game on reputation. The second game we kept our starters in, because they forced us to." Lompoc Head Coach Don Sevilla, when asked to compare the Braves improvement from last year on a scale of 1-10, replied " A seven, at least a good solid seven".

That first game had some observers wondering. Both sides exchanged points early, but Santa Ynez got a side-out on a service error and Caitlyn Price stepped to the service line. She stayed there a while, a long while, 15 consecutive seves kind of while. Kelley Soos, Emilie Newton, Rachel Szeyllers, and company put on an exibition, and Price had three aces. Lompoc recieved a bit of a spark late in the game from Jackie Townsend nailing a couple of aces, but never really recovered.

Game two was different. The Braves were in this one. Four lead changes, 7 ties, and at one point, after a Michelle Vang ace, a 8-6 Lompoc lead. A Szeyllers detonation gave the ball back to the Pirates, and unfortunately for the Braves, the Pirates found their rhythm. With Skyler Jacobson serving, Kelley Soos began distributing the most lovely sets to Newton, Szeyllers, and Aly Squires, and they began pounding them to the floor. Jacobson's 6 serves gave the visitors a lead they would not relinquish. Lompoc stayed close for a while, closing gaps to 10-12, 11-13, and 13-17, largely due to some nice play in the middle by Cameron Lizarraga. The Pirate pounders put together an 8-2 run, however, and closed out the Braves.

Game 3 was not as close, although it had its moments. Lompoc cut the margin to 10-8 midway through, but gave the ball right back on a service error. Santa Ynez had things pretty well figured out by then and went 14-6 the rest of the way.

Aly Squires had seven kills and three aces for the Pirates. Emilie Newton had five kills and four blocks. And Kelley Soos is as good as advertised.
The Braves sophomore setter Crystal Grover made her first appearance with the varsity.

Junior Varsity: Santa Ynez 2-0 (25-13, 25-16).
Game 1: Another reputation game perhaps ? Lompoc definitely came out flat, dropping the first six points. They had another bad patch when Hannah Crotty served 6 in a row. The rest of the game was even at 13.

Game 2: Lompoc turned the tables with Alissa Lindemann at the line, and ran off four in a row to get things started. But the Pirates clawed their way back, through 4 ties to take a 13-12 lead. The Braves stayed close for a while at 15-13, and 17-14, but Santa Ynez servers began hitting aces down the stretch, and pulled away.

Notes: One of the fun things to look forward to in the coming years is the impending battles at the net between Lompoc's Jesslyn Brundy and the Pirates Haylee Stapp. Stapp has the size advantage, but Brundy is more athletic and agressive. Lompoc was down to nine players because of Grover's promotion and Casey Stumpo's absence for personal reasons.

Freshmen
The Frosh were consistant - losing in back-to-back sets 25-13, 25-13. Desiree Valles received her first ever opportunity from the service line and hit three straight.

Cabrillo (4-4 LPL) 3 Templeton (3-6 LPL) 1
The Conquistadores dropped the first game 17-25 then dropped the Templeton Eagles 26-24, 25-17, 27-25 for the 3-1 win. [Story] In a battle for the middle, Cabrillo came out on top, out-hitting the Eagles 29 kills to 19.
Jessica Farley, suffering from a thigh injury, was challenged by Templeton's two tall front-line players Autumn Price and Becca Kretzu who shut her down at times. Phoebe Huggins had a big game defensively in the middle. Erin Shipley and Melissa Kottmeier also played well for the Eagles.
Kills: Farley 9, Long 6, Smith 5, Bonenfant 3 (all from the back row).
Serving : Long - 5 aces, Hilliard - 4 aces. Price had 10 kills for the Eagles.

Next Tuesday, the Conqs travel to Santa Maria to play the Saints in the first of their four remaining league matches.

St. Joseph (7-2, 7-6) 3, Santa Maria 0
The Knights swept the Saints 25-13, 25-13, 25-7 at St. Joseph's Hofschulte Gym. St Joseph's Mariah Vail served 8 consecutive points in game one, only to be topped by Natassha Koblo serving 10 straight points in the third game. On the (K)night Vail served 16 points, including six aces, and had 18 assists.

Coast Union (8-3) 3, Morro Bay (6-7, 4-3 LPL) 0
The Broncos topped the Pirates (25-16, 25-23, 24-21).

A Typical Tuesday in the LPL ?

Elke Peirtsegaele and Jocelyn Walton were part of a "nice surprise" for Cabrillo at #3 doubles, winning in straight sets 6-0, 6-1, 6-2.

LPL Girls Tennis

Cabrillo 16 Templeton 2 [at Ryon Park in Lompoc]

The Conqs dominated from the start on Tuesday sweeping all six of the first-round sets en route to a 16-2 rout of Templeton. In doubles, Cabrillo surrendered a total of 17 games to the Eagles, going 9-0. “That was a very nice surprise to see a sweep in the doubles,” according to Head Coach MariBeth Stieber. Brissa Montes /Jessica Montes,"The Twin Terrors" won 6-2, 6-3, 6-0, while Katy Carlson / Lanae Magers won all three of their sets 6-3. The # 3 team - Elke Peirtsegaele / Jocelyn Walton won 6-0, 6-1, 6-2; defeating the Eagles # 1 doubles unit in the final set.

Singles weren't so bad either. Ashley Pennewell (6-3, 6-2, 6-0) and Julie Leyva (6-0, 7-5, 6-1) both swept. Leyva, though, made it interesting, trailing 3-0 before rallying to win 7-5 in her first set. Sophomore Nikki Peirtsegaele won her first set (6-2), avenging a loss inflicted when the teams met earlier in the year.

Santa Ynez 15 @ Lompoc (2-7, 4-7) 3
[David Bickmore Courts]

The Pirates' singles cruised past the Braves as five Santa Ynez players combined to take 8 of 9 sets (games 49-15). Santa Ynez #1 Nathalia Chaddad dropped just one game in her two sets. Lompoc #1, Sameeha Husayn was the lone winner for the Braves - defeating Sidnye Tack 6-1. The visitors were almost as dominant in doubles (7-2, 42- 22). Lauren Swift / Emily Ineman (#1 doubles), and Erica Schroeder / Alisa Silsbee (#2) each swept their three sets. For Lompoc, both Dana Campitelli / Maria Morales (6-3) and Kaitlyn Munoz / Elicity Fabing (7-5) managed to win sets from #3 doubles Katie Manser / Brittany Feigher.

Junior Varsity
@Santa Ynez 14 [98], Lompoc 4 [68]

The Lompoc JV squad almost made it a contest against a strong Santa Ynez outfit. The Braves game win total (64), more than doubled their results in the LPL first round (28), but they just couldn't get set wins. this was exemplified by Katelyn Lee, at # 3 singles. She was 0-3 despite playing well - her losses were 5-7, 5-7, and a 6-7 (4-7) tiebreaker to the Pirates #1 player. Much to the delight of Coach Jim Steffey, no Lompoc singles player or doubles team was shut out.
In the other singles, Emily Tremblay (1-6, 1-6, 6-1) and Gold Vang (7 - 5, 1-6, 5-7) each won a set. While doubles pairs Ashley Branson / Azucena Villalobos (4-6, 2-6, 6-0) and Rosa Carreno / Isabel Anguiano (1-6, 6 - 4, 3-6) both picked up set wins. Serena Zuares / Julissa Abrego were 2-6, 1-6, 2-6.

@St. Joseph (8-1 LPL) 18, Santa Maria (0-9 LPL) 0
The Knights were not challenged at home in this one. Ellie McPike swept her sets 6-0, 6-2, 6-0. The Knights doubles duos of Victoria Thomas / Julia Villanueva, & Christine Noe / Whitney Bouquet each swept three sets. For the Saints, doubles pair Diana Garcia / Maureen Dechico came the closest with a 6-4 loss.

Mission Prep (9-4) 7, Morro Bay 2
{old style scoring in use}
The Royals were dominant, losing just once in each in doubles and singles. Ruslana Cannell turned in an impressive day winning her singles sets and both her doubles sets.

The Pirates swept the Saints 25-10, 25-16, 25-9 at Santa Maria's Wilson Gym. The Saints had some chances against the perennial Los Padres League champions, including tieing it up at 10 apiece midway through the second game, but couldn't hold on. Simply too many errors by the home team. Saints coach Kurt Mahelona mentioned three players “Nancy[Cadena], Jenna [Wheatherhead] and Christine [Mora]have been some of our most consistent players for us”, although Santa Maria stats were unavailible.
For Santa Ynez: Kelsey Soos had 17 assists, Aly Squires was the most murderous Pirate with five kills, and MacKenzie Mexico made four digs and served three aces.

Cross-Country Catch-up & Great Golfing Girls

Tom Garrard and the LHS Girls Golf Team earlier in the season.

Well, we're mostly back from the severe case of web oblivion. The current jury-rigged devices should be replaced on Tuesday with new equipment. The results from Wednesdays LPL X-C meet arrived about the time the equipment went kaput - so here they are.

Cross-Country
LPL All-Duals Meet
The Cabrillo boys did indeed come out on top - earning 6 points toward an LPL Title, the girls struggled, however. The Lompoc boys broke even (3-3) in the all-dual meet scoring, while the girls (2-4) remained within stricking distance of a playoff berth.
Click on the items below for more information on the local squads - varsity on the left & JV on the right. Or, if you prefer, the link below will take you to the complete results

[Complete Results]

LPL Girls Golf
Lompoc (2-2, 2-5) 290 at Morro Bay 318 [9 Holes]

Lompoc played the course at the Morro Bay Golf Club just last Thursday during the LPL tourney. Apparently they paid attention to the layout and learned how to shave some strokes, because when they returned Monday afternoon for a Los Padres League girls golf dual match with the Pirates they cut 12 of them off their previous low round, and 18 off of the round from last week.

The resounding 28 stroke win was especially welcome, since the Braves have been beaten by the Pirates at the last two LPL tournaments by a total of three points.

Three members of the team, led by Jocelyn Caudillo who was pulled away from the NSBCART luncheon by the team on their way north, shot personal records. Caudillo, took the medal with a solid 50 - 5 strokes better than she shot on Thursday.

Ali Wilson (58, 8 strokes better) and Anna Clark (63, 14 stroke improvement) also had their lowest rounds ever in the match for the Braves Kaleigh Goethe (54) & Julietta Solis (65) also had solid scoring rounds for the Braves.

Jill Steinman (55) and Shanna Cro (56) were the low scorers for Morro Bay.

Lompoc, now in fourth place in the LPL, is back in action Thursday at LPL Tournament #4, hosted by Santa Ynez at the Alisal River Course. --- el stato

VAI KEEPS ROLLING

Vai Taua
RB Vai Taua rushed 17 times for 122 yards (long= 27 yds, 7.2 ave.) and scored a touchdown on a 26 yard run to open the scoring. He also caught 4 passes for 66 yards (long-54 yds). He did have one lost fumble. [Story]

Lydell Sargeant
Third-ranked Penn State delivered a tremendous final three quarters after a slow start en route to a 46-17 thumping of Michigan before a raucous Homecoming crowd of 110,017.
The Nittany Lions improved to 8-0 overall and 4-0 in the Big Ten to set-up a showdown for first place in the conference standings with No. 12/11 Ohio State next Saturday in Columbus. The Nittany Lions have won 39 of its last 48 games. [Story]
The Penn State defense delivered another superb performance. His shoulder problems apparently behind him, CB Lydell Sargeant started and had three solo tackles.

Boo Jackson
The Ohio football team had a restful Saturday since they don't play until a rarely-scheduled Tuesday night game at Temple in Philadelphia. Look for it on ESPN2 at 5 p.m. Pacific.

Meanwhile Boo was interviewed as follows:

Ohio quarterback Boo Jackson led the Bobcats to their first Mid-American Conference win Saturday at Kent State. The Gardena, Calif. native spoke with The Post's Steve Gartner about a variety of topics including his hairstyle and music preference.

The Post: Why do you style your hair long?
Boo Jackson: It's kind of a thing my brother and me have going — we’re both half Hawaiian. We style our hair long to look more Polynesian like (junior safety) Patrick Tafua. It’s our culture.
Post: Have you ever been to Hawaii?
Jackson: Oh yeah. Everyone on my mom’s side lives on the island. Last time I was there was two or three summers ago.
Post: Talk about your beard. Is this something that you will continue to grow?
Jackson: I feel like I had an all right game last week so if I keep it going, then, who knows, it might get as long as (junior wide receiver) Brandon Peterson's.
Post: What do you plan on doing with your extended time off?
Jackson We have to get a lot of rest so I'm sitting back watching TV and movies. I'm getting a lot of studying done, not having to cram it all in one night. I had three or four days to relax and watch movies and play video games.
Post: How do you feel you are depicted in EA Sports' NCAA Football 2009?
Jackson: I think they have me a little bit slower than I am. Other than that I think it is almost right on. They probably have never really seen anyone from the Mid-American Conference play before.
Post: What musical artists do you listen to before games?
Jackson: On the bus ride, to calm me down, it's R&B and Usher. On the way into the game it's all R&B. But once I get into the locker room and step on the field, it's all Lil' Wayne and T.I.
Post: What's one thing about coach Frank Solich that most people do not know?
Jackson: He has a side of him that no one sees unless you are on the football team. You see him yelling, but it's nothing like when you mess up in a key situation.
Post: What are the similarities between Athens and California?
Jackson: I kind of grew up in a town like this. It was a small town with not a lot of places to go and not a lot of things to do, unless you drive an hour and a half away. The Los Angeles area is completely different. There is no smog around and the nightlife isn't like L.A.

Michael Slaughter #44 [LB] / Justice Clegg #71[OL]

Party At Paisola

The Coaches,Captains, and Refs meet before the match.

LPL Girls Volleyball

Cabrillo @ Lompoc

Varsity [Story]

Lompoc / Cabrillo has always been just a little bit different than most rivalries. Lompoc tends to view the Conquistadors as uppity younger siblings. You certaintly don't mind taking them out in the driveway and showing them who's boss, but you don't want anyone else doing it. Cabrillo, meanwhile, tends to regard Lompoc with a sense of bemusement at times, as if to ask "What's all the fuss".
The players grow up together, often play on club or youth teams together, attend the same churches, or have parents who work at the same place. The coaches are all part of the same fraternity (or sorority as the case may be), frequently having worked for or with each other over the years - often on junior teams with kids who go on to both schools. Many have been teachers at the "other" school. So is it really a rivalry ? You Betcha !! It's kind of like the 'friendly' card game at a family reunion, you don't necessarily have to win but you sure don't want to lose and hear about it forever.
So it was at Paisola on Thursday. Cabrillo Head V-ball coach Sue Slavins could give give appreciative Lompoc Headman Don Sevilla a great big hug before the Frosh contest, to congratulate him on breaking a long losing streak against Santa Maria, and then both go out a few hours later in fierce pursuit of conquest. Jessica Farley, Cabrillo's 'Hammer' in the middle, could wage a virtual war above the net with Lompoc's big gun Cameron Lizarraga, with other players sprawled on the floor or diving into the stands. Yup, it's a rivalry.

So how did the match go? Game 1 was competitive early, then Kaylee Long ran off 5 serves in a row and Cabrillo kept adding to their lead until they were up 21-14. At that point, Jackie Towsend stepped in and briefly took over. First with a kill for side out, followed by 6 consecutive serves, including several aces. Brandy Muchado helped out with a block and a kill, and suddenly it was a two point game (21-19). Cabrillo finally managed to side out, and served for another point before giving the ball back to the Braves at 23-20. Lompoc lost the next two points, however. Game 1 - Cabrillo.

Game 2 followed a very similar pattern. Kelly O'Connell's service helped Cabrillo to an early 5-1 lead. Tiffany Lee and Cloe Huggins served it to 14-7 mostly on the backs of stellar team passing & defense. Then that Townsend girl showed up again. Another six straight serves, including an ace, two Erica Slikker blocks, and a great Muchado tip in. Unfortunately, for the Braves, her serve at 12-14 was just long and Lompoc was nver able to regain any momentum and dropped Game 2 25-16.

The start of Game 3 was the Cameron Show. With Stephanie Olsen serving, Lizarraga had three big plays sandwhiched around an ace. A kill off Farley, a block of Farley, and a kill to the north-west corner. More Lompoc pyrotechnics and the Braves were up 10-2. Cabrillo did not wilt away. After a Farley block, and in between Lompoc mini-bursts, they started to chip a point here and a point there off the lead. Slowly, to 4-10, 6-12, 6-14, 9-15, Ashley Bonenfant served to 13-15, then back out to 14-17.
Callie Matulis stepped to the line, and with three serves (an ace and a Farley kill) tied it at 17 all. Then it was game on serious. 18-17 Lompoc, 18 all, 19-18 Cabrillo, 19 all. Two more leads and two more ties. Long had a massive kill for a 22-21 Cabrillo lead and a Lompoc lift gave them another point. After a Braves timeout, Lompoc induced a sideout (22-23), with guess who at the line. Yup. Townsend. But an extended rally resulted in a Megan Smith kill for Cabrillo, and Phoebe Huggins drilled one down on match point to win it. If Cabrillo volleyball keeps playing this well, several members of the water polo team may be showing up late.

Junior Varsity
Game 1 was a simple blowout, as Cabrillo cruised 25-12. Colby Edman had a 6 serve run for the Conqs, who dominated from the start. Alissa Lindemann had a short run for Lompoc.
Game 2 was not like game one. The Braves took a quick 4-1 lead. Cabrillo tied it at6-all on a Kiley-Shae Aldridge block, and began to ease out to a small advantage of their own. Two great Crystal Grover digs kept the Braves close. A Kady De Temple kill pushed the Conqs back ahead, but a service error and two Lindemann kills put Lompoc in the lead. A Cabrillo sideout and Caitlyn Harvey-Morgan served hit seven serves, five of which were aces. Game over ? Not quite. The Braves clawed back and tied it at 22, before a service error, a Jessica Rucinski ace, and a Felicia Bowen tip in ended the match.

Frosh
The lowest level started the evening with the closest match of the day. Stacy Harmon used 3 aces to stake Cabrillo to a 5-1 lead. Paige Maikrzek pushed it to 9-4, and the Conquistadors never really looked back, although Danielle Hamon had a couple points (2 aces) for the Braves to cut it to 12-18. Cabrillo's Harmon serving at 19-12 recieved two points off a massive kill and great defense to go along with 2 more aces to put the game out of reach.

Game 2 was an odd one. Cabrillo went up 3-0, then Lompoc tied them at 5-all. Neither team really established any rhythm, but Lompoc eased ahead by five points. Cabrillo never was able to get closer than 3 (at 21-18), and the Braves closed them out 25-20.

Tiebreaker - Game 3. Lompoc took the first three points. Cabrillo fought back to a tie at 6. The Braves regained the lead, by one, then two. Cabrillo tied them again, this time at 9-all. The Conqs Kayla Chard served two aces, before the teams exchanged service errors and suddenly it was 13-10 Cabrillo. Kaitlyn Ogan got the next two serves in play, and Cabrillo won both rallies for the game and the match.

Santa Maria 3 Templeton 2
The Saints electrified Wilson Gym by winning their first match of the year 3-2 (23-25, 25-22, 25-23, 14-25, 16-14) over the Templeton Eagles. Nancy Cardenas served up 19 aces. Cristina Mora added 14 more to go with her 17 kills. And Gina Weatherhead had 8 aces, 7 blocks, and 5 kills.

Morro Bay 3 St Joseph 2
The Knights lost for one of the few times in recent memory within the friendy confines of Hofschute Gym. Dayna Drewniak had 27 kills, 22 digs, and 5 aces. Alexis Dudley added 40 digs, and Mariah Vail contributed 35 assists, but it wasn't enough. The Pirates (6-8, 4-3 LPL) prevailed 25-19, 20-25, 25-23, 19-25, 15-13. In game 5, St Joe was down by 6 points and rallied - but came up just short. For the squad from the land of the Rock - Sara Hoversten led the offensive attack with 16 kills, Ciara Ramos had 11 kills and 8 blocks, Chelsea Mansfield kicked 9 kills and 6 aces into the pot, teammate Lorna Porter had 37 assists, and Cori Gacad tallied 38 digs.

San Marcos 3 Santa Ynez 0
The Div III Pirates stepped to face the Div I Royals and got stepped on : 25-18, 25-16, 25-18. Caitlyn Wright - 9 kills, Nicole Tomasini - 8 digs.

LPL Girls Tennis
Lompoc 10 @ Morro Bay 8
For Lompoc's varsity team (4-6, 2-6 LPL) it always seems to come down to the Braves' doubles prowess versus the oppositions singles strength. Well consider it to have happened again. The Braves doubles pairs, Dana Campitelli / Maria Morales, Elicity Fabing / Kaitlyn Munoz, and Nicole Nomany / Jessica Cosio, all swept their sets. The problem was the Morro Bay singles players, Kim Dauer and Megan Hansen, were also sweeping three sets each. The breakthrough came when Lompoc's Sameeha Husayn won the last set of the match 6-2.

Junior Varsity
Jim Steffey's LHS JV squad defeated the Pirates 14-4 the first time, but he was certain they would improve. They did. In addition he shuffled his line-up, because Korina Esqueda came back to him from varsity (not enough room in the van apparently). He installed Korina at #1 singles, moved Katelyn Lee from #3 to #2, pulled Serena Zuares from his #2 doubles team to play #3 singles, and combined #'s 1 & 2 singles players Gold Vang and Emily Tremblay at #2 doubles.

The Coach writes:

"The Girl’s JV Tennis Team dominated the Pirates from Morro Bay yesterday at the Dave Bickmore Courts.
In singles, Korina Esqueda swept her three opponents, dropping only two games the entire afternoon, winning 6 – 1, 6 – love, and 6 – 1. Serena Zuares also swept all three of her sets, winning 6 – 3, 6 – 4, and 6 – 2.
Continuing their dominating play was the doubles team of Azucena Villalobos and Ashley Branson who dropped only three games the entire afternoon, sweeping their three sets 6 – 2, 6 -1, and 6 -love. Also doing equally well, was the doubles team of Gold Vang and Emily Tremblay, who won their two sets 6 -3 and 6 – love, before giving way to the team of Miriam Lopez and Julie Abrego, who then promptly dumped the #3 team from Morro Bay, 6-love."
He continued " ...the doubles team of Rosa Carreno and Isabel Anguiano had an awsome day, starting the day off by shutting out their first round opponent 6 - 0. In the second round against Morro Bay's #1, they also prevailed 6 -2. In their third round match against Morro Bay's #3, that fought valiently, getting back into the match after being down to force a tie-breaker. Clearly exhausted after being on the court all afternoon, they just barely dropped the tie-breaker. They continue to excel and are doing very well, they were just a point away from sweeping a couple of times."

Katelyn Lee was competitive , but couldn't break through for a win, dropping two sets (4-6, 4-6). Jessica Smith played in the third set and fell (2-6). Coach Steffey intended to pull Vang & Emily after 1 set, but they asked to play another set against the Pirates #1's.

The next JV action is Tuesday @ Santa Ynez.

Cabrillo had the BYE.

Santa Ynez @ Santa Maria
The Pirates took over the Minami Center, blasting the Saints 18-0 despite extensive substitution. Lauren Gerlach didn't lose a game in her three sets, and doubles unit Katie Manser / Brittany Feighner only lost one in their three. Of the 7 games Santa Ynez gave up, 4 were to exchange student Astrid Schifflers in her loss (4-6) to sub Sydney Tack.

Cross Country
Quick Note: A decision from the LPL powers that be ruled that the Cabrillo boys had in fact won at the X-C All-Duals on Wednesday. Morro Bay was second, Santa Maria third, and Lompoc fourth. We are still awaiting full results.

Football Report Lite
for CIF-SS Week #6

Los Padres League

Pioneer Valley [5-0, 2-0 LPL] @ Cabrillo [2-3, 2-1 LPL]
The Conquistadors come off back-to-back wins against winless teams, while the Panthers roll into town with the best record in the county. Cabrillo is led by senior QB Sean Allen who is in charge of a ball-control offense. RB/LB Matt Rotondi is the hammer on both sides of the ball, and with RB Brandon Whittaker providing some zoom factor to the offense. The Conqs have won the last two games in fairly ugly fashion, but ugly wins are better than pretty losses, and Cabrillo will take any win they can get.

Pioneer relies on QB Nick Rucobo to hand the ball to Dan Ando or occasionally chuck it downfield to someone - usually Marcell Braddock. Sometimes, he'll even hand it off to Braddock or tote it himself.

Nipomo [1-4, 0-2 LPL] @ St Joseph [4-1, 3-0 LPL]
League leader St Joe can hurt you a number of different ways, but it all starts with the ball in the hands of QB Gavin Kelly. He'll either keep it, hand it to Ryan Anglin or KJ Cusack (among others) or throw it to Travis Biegel. They have outscored opponents 189-67, which could be a problem for the Titans who have been outscored 119-30.
Eric Penningroth has been the primary weapon for Nipomo, while QB Josh Corriea has spent most of his time running for his life.

Morro Bay [4-1, 2-0 LPL] @ Santa Ynez [0-5, 0-2 LPL]
The Pirates QB, Trevor Barkas, isn't asked to do much more than manage the game, which he does just fine. Morro Bay has been averaging over 300 yard per game rushing. Duran Gonzales and Wyatt Gerbracht do most of the damage, but you can't key on them because 3-4 other guys will then blow you up.
SY Pirate junior QB Tyler Shean has done some good things things since taking over, but has yet to jump-start a rather anemic offense. Morro Bay has 3-4 players capable of out-rushing SY in the Battle of the Pirates.

Santa Maria [0-5, 0-3 LPL] @ Templeton [1-4, 0-2 LPL] 7:30 PM
The Templeton High School varsity football team will be looking for its first league win at home on homecoming night. The Eagles lost their LPL opener to St. Joseph (Oct. 3), and fell 36-26 to Morro Bay (Oct. 10) after having 2 TD's called back due to penalties.
The Eagles have rushed for 993 yards - led by Kris Dearie [45- 412 , 3TD, long 65] and Garrett Baldwin [52- 338, 4TD]. Quarterback Kaleb Sawdey is 32-76-2 with 6 Td's. Dearie [9-163, 2TD's] is one of his favorite targets.
Defensively, Daniel Wheeler, Tyler Gray, and Derek Scoville have combined for 139 of the teams 377 tackles.
Santa Maria has been outscored 145-69, and was drubbed 42-0 last week by St Joseph. --- el stato
