McIntyre, CHS Girl Poloists Nominated Team of '08

McIntyre and CHS Girls Polo Nominated to Repeat

Coach Corey McIntyre's Cabrillo Conquistadores girls water polo team was not expected to do much in 2008. This after losing their three top stars from their CIF title team of '07.

Uhhhhh, wrong.

The Conqs reloaded and copped yet another Los Padres League championship in February and punctuated their charge with a crushing 19-2 victory over second place St. Joseph in the title game.

For their accomplishments the Conqs have been nominated as 2008 Team of the Year and McIntyre as Coach of the Year in the annual Lompoc Locker Room end-of-the-year poll.

They could create a dynasty. McIntyre and his team won both categories in 2007.

They are the first nominees for 2008. YOU can nominate by sending your nominees to pressboxprod@verizon.net before December 10.

In other categories Masson Blow and Becca Ur have already been nominated.

Ur also became the first Aztec poloist to ever receive superior academic honors four years in a row with a GPA of 3.69 in biology.
She also earned academic all-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation honors and was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VIII women's at-large second team earlier in the year.
Nominations will remain open through December 10. Last year's co-winners were Ur's sister Sarah who tied with Lompoc High soccer star Jani Carmona. Send your nominations to pressboxprod@verizon.net

Earlier he had won the Los Padres League title and won the first CIF wrestling title by a Lompocan since Mike Villalobos in 1984.

He returned to action in the spring with the Brave track team.

Blow is now a student and wrestler at Cal Poly.
The Athlete of the Year poll will receive nominations for Male Athlete of 2008, Female Athlete of 2008, Team of the Year and Coach of the Year through December 10. Get YOUR NOMINATIONS IN SOON to pressboxprod@verizon.net.

Alumni Report - Part II *** Updated***

Alumni Update : Part II

Soccer
Katie McIntosh #14
A difficult 2008 season came to an end for the Chico State women’s soccer program with a 2-0 loss to Sonoma State on Sunday at Trione Fields in Santa Rosa. It followed a scoreless tie at Arcata versus Humbolt State. Katie had her second shot on goal in the finale - but it was one of 4 saves by Sonoma State .

A starting Wildcat defender in all 20 games with over 1800 minutes played, senior Katie McIntosh had three assists and two shots - both on goal, but neither scored. Her last assist was Sept 4 vs St. Martin's.

The loss concludes a very frustrating season for the Wildcats at 7-10-3, 3-8-3 in the CCAA. With five, one-goal losses and three scoreless ties this season, the Wildcats were just a few breaks away from posting their seventh-straight winning season.

Amanda Murray #20
The Cal St Dominguez Hills womens soccer team, beat Cal Poly- Pomona 3-1 and lost to Cal State - San Bernadino 3-1 to finish the regular season 12-8, 9-5 CCAA.

They then entered the CCAA Tournament at UC San Diego as the #4 seed- taking on #1 Sonoma State.

They won that one 2-0, with the reward being a chance to play the host Tritons, whom they had lost to twice this season on Triton Field. It didn't go well - a 3-1 loss had them hoping that their #5 Far-West Region ranking and their win over #6 Sonoma would be enough to get them into the NCAA Div.-II Tournament.

It was. They were placed in the Far West Regional against San Francisco St - the winner taking on powerhouse Western Washington. A 2-1 victory left them looking for revenge against the 12th-ranked (NCAA) WW Vikings. The 2-0 loss to Western earlier this year was the Toro's first.

Sadly, it was not to be. The Vikings prevailed 1-0 after surviving an 8 shot onslaught by the Toros in the last 6 plus minutes of the game. It was just the fourth time they had been shutout this year and the second time by Western Washington. CSUDH concludes their season at 14-10 (9-5 CCAA).

Amanda, a junior transfer from Hancock, had 68 minutes in 3 appearances this season.

AHC - Men
Apart from a 2-0 win over Canyons on Oct 3rd and a 2-2 tie against Citrus on Nov. 4th, the Allan Hancock College men's soccer team could not get any traction in Western State Conference games, the latest a 5-0 loss to powerhouse SBCC in the final. Hancock finished 4-18-1, 1-12-1 WSC.

Juan Benivides (LHS) and Massimo Beeson (CHS) played for the Bulldogs, but no individual information is currently available.

Cross-country

Michael Coe
The Cabrillo product has been struggling with injuries this season, and had run in only 1 of their first 5 events. He finished 36th in the NCAA Prelim Blue Race with a time of 24:16 for the 8K course. That was the second fastest time for the Cal Golden Bears and helped pace them to an 8th place finish.

After sitting out the Bronco Invitational, where the GB's finished 8th of 14 teams, Coe competed in the Pac-10 finals on Oct. 31st. His 8K time of 24:22 was third on the team and 21st overall. The Bears took third in the tough 8 team field.

On 15 Nov. 08, the real competition started - the NCAA West regionals. Michael finished 17th, in a time of 29:34 for the 10K distance, just ahead of teammate Mark Matusak. He was second on the team and set a PR for the distance.

Four of the top 5 teams at the regionals were from the PAC-10. Oregon won, and was followed by Stanford, Portland, Cal, and Washington. Cal's fourth place finish propels them to the NCAA Finals for the second consecutive year and only the second time in their history.

AHC
The Bulldogs were led, as usual, at the SoCal Championship Meet in Bakersfield by Lompoc Valley athletes. The womens squad finished 24th out of 27 teams (196 runners) in the 5K race, and the men did not score because they only had two runners in the men's 4 mile race (202 runners). - both CHS alums. Several runners set collegiate personal bests. The valley runners took both the tops spots for Hancock.

Basketball

University of Mary
The West brothers, Geoff (#5) a 5-11 senior guard from CHS via Santa Rosa JC, and Jason (#12) a 5-11 sophomore guard from CHS, are both expected to get some significant playing time for the Bismarck, ND based Marauders.
Geoff started all 27 games last year, finishing second on the team, by slim margins, in minutes (733, 14 behind) and points (27.1, 0.6 points behind). He led the team with 60 assists, 30 steals, and was fourth with 7 blocks. Jason played in 23 games - averaging 11.1 points and 7-13 shooting from behind the arc.

After exhibition contests versus North Dakota St. and Montana St., they start the regular season tonight in Seattle, WA against St. Martins.

****Unfortunately, it was not to be. As the school reported-

Geoff West scored a career-high 34 but that wasn’t enough as the University of Mary lost its season opener 106-82 at Saint Martin’s University.
Behind West’s impressive outburst that included making nine three-pointers in 12 attempts, the Marauders built a 44-43 lead at intermission. The Saints exploded for 63 second half points, including a 14-1 run after the two teams found themselves tied at 60-60.
For the game, the senior guard from Lompoc, CA, hit
12-of-17 shots from the field and made one of two free throws. West also added two steals.
They stay in Seattle for the Seattle Pacific Tournament this weekend.
They are slated to play Seattle Pacific and Western Wasington.

Others
Joel Smith, a 6-4 guard from LHS, will play his senior season at Chaminade University where he is working on his Master's Degree. The Silverswords lost an exhibition game to Hawai'i on Nov. 7th 80-63. It is their lone tune-up before opening the Maui Invitational on the 24th versus #1 ranked North Carolina.

Chelsea Cassulo, a 5-8 freshman forward from LHS, is the lone valley player on the AHC Womens Basketball team this year. The Bulldogs opened with a 79-70 loss to Reedley on Veteran's Day, and dropped games to East LA (77-64) and Bakersfield (86-72) at their Tournament last weekend. They hope to pick up a win tonight vs. the College of Sequoias.

Quick Notes
Danny Duffy, one of the top prospects in the Kansas City Royals organisation, has been spreading some of his good fortune around. In addition to stuff for the folks (natch), he has also sprung for new uniforms for the Cabrillo baseball team - check 'em out this spring.

Napoleon Kaufman, who was in town for the Big Game, had some interesting things to say about some of his former haunts - namely the University of Washington and the Oaklawn, er, Oakland Raiders. He talked with the crew at halftime of the game, so check the schedule for the re-broadcasts.

Bryce Luken , now stationed at El Segundo AFB, also stopped by to talk about the AFA and Lompoc football. ---- el stato

Alumni Report - Football

Football Alumni

Lydell Sargeant

Penn State suffered a heart-rending 24-23 loss at Iowa, but recovered with a 34-7 win over Indiana to move to 10-1 (6-1 Big Ten). They held the Hoosiers to only 180 yards total offense and 6 1st downs. They play the #15 Michigan St. Spartans (9-2, 6-1) on Saturday.

Lydell Sargeant, a Cabrillo grad, had two solo tackles against Indiana, after posting 3 solo and 3 assists versus the Hawkeyes.

The senior, playing only his second year on defense, after a couple years at wide receiver, has 3 interceptions (55 yards on two returns), 23 tackles (15 solo), 7 pass break-ups, 10 passes defensed, and a fumble recovery. He is the team leader in interceptions, break-ups, and passes defensed, despite missing some playing time due to injury.

Vai Taua
After the Nevada Wolfpack [6-4, 6-2] fell (38-31) at Hawaii for the 6th consecutive time, they have rebounded with consecutive wins over Fresno St. (41-28) and San Jose St. (41-17), and are now bowl eligible.

Against Fresno St., Vai rushed 28 times for 263 yards (long 57, ave 9.4) and a touchdown. It was Taua's first 200-yard performance of the season, the sixth-highest rushing total in school history. The 'Pack' had 472 yards on the ground.

The Wolf Pack racked up 330 yards of offense and made three lengthy scoring drives in the first half, but Nevada also missed a golden opportunity to score more points in the final seconds. Taua was stopped at the Fresno State 1, and the clock ran out before the Wolf Pack could call a timeout. The officials didn't see Nevada coach Chris Ault, who won his 196th game, frantically signaling to stop the game before the half ended.

Taua followed that up by rushing for 125 yards (on 18 carries) and a TD versus the Spartans, as they rolled up 333 rushing yards while holding San Jose St. to minus 23.

In 10 games this season, the Cabrillo HS Graduate, who started the season as the third-stringer, has rushed 177 times for 1284 yards (7.3 ave/ long 79 yds), topping the 100-yard mark seven times. He has scored 12 TD's and is averaging 128.4 y/G. He also has 20 receptions for 147 yards (7.3 ave.), 2TD, and a long of 54.

Boo Jackson
Ohio University (2-8, 1-5) has hit a rough patch, as Brian Boesch of BobcatAttack put it after their 8 Nov loss --

"Judging by the players, the coaches, the fans and the standings after Saturday’s 28-3 loss to the Bowling Green Falcons at Peden Stadium, the Ohio
Bobcats’ season is over, even if two more games loom on the 2008 schedule.
The players performed poorly, the coaches seemed ill-prepared, the fans understandably gave up hope and the ‘Cats claimed sole-possession of the MAC
East’s basement during a game that Bowling Green dominated from the get-go.
“I thought we did not do a very good job at times of making plays,” Ohio coach Frank Solich said. “And I don’t know if we did a good enough job as coaches putting our players in position to make plays.” ...

Jackson had his worst
game as an Ohio Bobcat. The junior transfer had only 96 yards and completed only
six of 16 passes. His two interceptions led to 14 Bowling Green points. ...

The
interception by Jackson was the final throw of his afternoon. Junior Brandon Jones appeared for the fourth time this season, and he showed some promise.
However, his two drives eventually faltered, one by a pair of costly sacks and the other by a failed fourth down. Jones finished with 92 passing yards, but he
was sacked three times"

The previous game, a 32-19 loss at home to the Buffalo Bulls, wasn't any better--

Ohio mustered more total yards than Buffalo and held senior quarterback Drew Willy to just 116 passing yards. However, Ohio played poorly throughout the game. The ‘Cats fumbled seven times, botched two extra point attempts, failed to
score twice inside the red zone and allowed Buffalo to score on all four of its trips inside the 20.
“It just came down to the turnovers,” Ohio quarterback
Boo Jackson said. “To [lose] four fumbles alone is just ridiculous. It’s just a lack of discipline and not knowing your surroundings.”
“Certainly, lack of discipline is involved,” ‘Cats coach Frank Solich said about his team’s struggles. “For there to be that at this point in the season is inexcusable.” "
Boo had one of the fumbles at the end of a 21 yard run.

Ohio next plays Nov. 22, when the Akron Zips come to Peden Stadium.

In 10 games this year, he has 80 carries and has gained 297 yards (long =21), and lost 178, for a net of 214 yards (2.7 ave.). He has 2 of Ohio's 6 rushing TDs and is averaging 21.4 y/gm. Passing he is 150-258-11 (58.1 %) for 1943 yards (long= 77) and 9 TDs. Averaging 194.3 y/gm, his passer rating is 126.94 . He leads the team in total offense (215.7 y/gm) with 2157 yards.

Justice Clegg [OL]/ Mike Slaughter [LB]
The Peacocks of Upper Iowa University were finally able to crow again. After losing seven in a row, the UIU squad pulled out a 37-36 (2OT) win over Minnesot-Crookston at home on Senior Day in Fayette.

The Peacocks fell behind the Golden Eagles of Minnesota, Crookston 22-3 less than six minutes into the game's action. Upper Iowa caught its collective breath and was able to [score] 20 unanswered points to take a 23-22 lead with 2:04 to play in
the third quarter. Minnesota, Crookston retook the lead early in the fourth quarter, 30-23, but the Peacocks stormed back once again just 55 seconds later to tie the game at 30-30. Neither team could get the winning score in regulation so the game moved to overtime.

In overtime, the Peacocks missed a field goal on their first possession, but picked off a Golden Eagle pass to send the
contest into double overtime. The Golden Eagles scored a touchdown with just two plays, but missed the extra point to take a 36-30 lead. Upper Iowa faced a 4th and 7 on their final possession, but a pass interference call gave the home team
new life with a fresh set of downs. UIU scored the tying touchdown and added an extra point to take the victory 37-36.

The Peacock football team have completed their 2008 season with a 2-9 mark and an 11th place finish in the NSIC.

Clegg [above left] is an offensive lineman and consequently, and unfortunately, invisible in the school's stat report. Although the o-line was mentioned as performing well after the team rushed for 425 yards in the final win.

In 10 games, Slaughter [left], a 6-5, 245 lb linebacker, had 30 solo tackles and 27 assists, with 14.0 TFL (64 yds.), and 5.5 SAC's (36 yards). He also picked one off (28 yrd ret), with 1 Break-up and two Passes defensed.

Slaughter apparently had one whale of a final game--

Mike Slaughter Named Northern Sun Conference Defensive Football Player of the
Week
Nov. 18, 2008
Mike
Slaughter
, a senior from Lompoc, California, has been named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Defensive Football Player of the Week. This honor is the fourth NSIC Player of the Week award earned by an Upper Iowa student-athlete this year and the second time that a Peacock football player has earned the honor.

Slaughter led the UIU defense in his last game in Peacock blue and white. The senior spent all day in the Golden Eagle backfield and seemed to always be around the ball. Slaughter tallied 13 tackles (5 solo) in the game while accounting for 4.5 tackles for loss and 1 sack.

Robert Sherman

Menlo College (3-7) followed up a 49- 20 win on the road over Lewis & Clark , with another close loss at home (3 by 3 pts or less) to Pacific Lutheran (35-34), and a blowout road loss to Willamette (28-3) to conclude the season.
The freshman from LHS did get some playing time this year, but didn't break into other categories of the Stat sheet.

Allan Hancock College

The Bulldogs won four straight games to finish the regular season 7-3. The first was a narrow 45-42 victory over Pasedena CC at Jackie Robinson Field, in the initial contest between the two schools. The second, a resounding pounding (40-22) of Moorpark at home. Third, was a 57-55 overtime thiller at Glendale. And the final was a 30-12 romp over Ventura.

Lompoc's Tim Ochoa [#21 DB] has two interceptions with returns of 76 & 26 yards, 4 Pass Break-ups, 43 tackles (25 solo) - 4.5 TFL, and a blocked kick.

Cabrillo's Casey Belluz [#40 K/P] is tied for leading scorer with 60 points. Used mostly as a PK, he is 39-41 (95.1 %) on PAT's and 7-12 (58.3 %, long-33) on FGs. On kickoffs, he is averaging 50.85 yds/k [40-2034] with 2 touchbacks. In limited punting duty [3- 128 yds], he has the longest punt for the team this year (54 yds), and his average is 9 yards longer than the regular punter [42.67 vs 33.64].

In 8 games Joseph Scott (LHS), although listed as a receiver, has been mostly been playing defense. He has 21 tackles (11 solo), 1 TFL, 3 Interceptions, and 3 Pass Break-ups.

Likewise the Conq's Greg Watson, listed as a RB, has spent his playing time in four games on the other side of the ball, racking up 5 tackles (3 solo) and a pair of Pass Break-ups.

Freshmen Jacob Farley (#71, OL) and Joshua Blair (#97, SS) are also on the squad.

BULLDOGS WILL FACE MT. SAC IN PLAYOFF GAME
The Allan Hancock College football team will compete in the Southern California Bowl at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 6:00 p.m. Number three ranked Mt. San Antonio (9-1, Central Conference co-champion) verses the number six ranked Bulldogs (7-3, Northern Conference runner up), with the winner advancing to the Southern California regional semi-finals.

Winners of play-off bowl games may earn the chance to participate in the State Finals on December 13. In eight seasons as head football coach, Kris Dutra has made five bowl game appearances. This will be his first appearance in a play-off bowl game. For more information, call Kim Ensing, associate dean for Allan Hancock College Athletics at 922-6966 ext. 3359.

Conqs Time Runs Out **18 Nov 08 Update**

The Santa Barbara County Champion Conquistadors.

CIF-SS Cross Country Prelims

The X-C Prelims were held in scorching heat and increasingly smoky conditions at Mount San Antonio College in Walnut CA . The course run was modified accordingly. The early racers (Div's II/III/IV) ran the 2.94 mile 1999 course modification and the later races (Div's I & V) ran an even shorter route. This consisted of a double 'Valley Loop' plus 'Reservoir Hill'.
[Complete Results]

Division III [Cabrillo / Lompoc]
Both the Lompoc boys and girls qualified for the meet along with the 14th seeded Cabrillo boys. The D-III races were divided into three heats for both the boys and girls. This meant that the 16 teams advancing to the finals would consist of the top five teams from each heat plus the fastest 6th place finisher. [Individual Times are at the bottom of the Post section]

Boys
Unfortunately for the Conqs, they ended up in a faster heat (#2), and finished 6th of 16 teams - clocking in at 1:25:45. Cabrillo was almost two minutes ahead of the Heat 3 #6 squad from La Canada, but were 31 seconds behind the 6th place team from heat #1, St Francis (La Canada), and so were eliminated even though they finished faster than two teams,West Torrance (1:26:13) & SLO (1:26:05), in Heat 3. The Lompoc (1:28:18) boys finished 7th of 18 teams in Heat 3. Atascadero (1:28:39) finished 13th (of 17) in Heat 1, and both Paso Robles & San Marcos no scored in Heat 3.

Girls
The young (1 senior) Lompoc girls were 10th (1:49:52) out of 16 teams in their heat (# 1). San Marcos (1:46:33) was 11th of 17 in Heat 2, while both Atascadero (4th, 1:41:38), and SLO (5th, 1:43:30) advanced to the finals out of Heat 3.

Other Divisions:
Boys
In Div II, Dos Pueblos (8th, 1:24:42), Arroyo Grande (10th, 1:25:17), and Righetti (11th, 1:26:32), all ran in the 16 team Heat 1, while Santa Maria (11th, 1:26:33) was in Heat 2 (17 Teams).

Morro Bay (2nd, 1:26:24) advanced in Div IV, after finishing 1 point behind Laguna Beach, but both Nipomo and Templeton no timed.

And Laguna Blanca's Kevin Lunn (the SB County Champ) won his shortened Div. V race to help propel his squad to a 4th place finish (1:02:18) and a spot in the finals.

Girls
Likewise Arroyo Grande' s Karlee Owens (18:01) won her Div. II Heat 2 race to help the Eagles (1:39:10) capture 4th place and a finals trip. Neither Dos Pueblos (8th, 1:45:13), or Righetti (16th, 1:56:40) survived in Heat 1 of the same division.

Div IV was somewhat more productive for area schools. Templeton (1:44:21) finished in 2nd just two points back of Oaks Christian, and one spot ahead of LPL rival Morro Bay (3rd, 1:47:27) in Heat 3, but St. Joseph (6th, 1:53:44) & Santa Ynez (no score) went down in Heat 2.

And finally, neither Cate (9th, 1:20:25 short) or Bishop Diego (no score) could gain any traction in their Div. V race (Heat 1), but Laguna Blanca (1:14:49 short) finished 4th in Heat 2 to become the only SB County school to qualify for the finals in either boys or girls - and they did it in both.

Wet, Yet Satisfied and Victorious

These two young ladies enjoyed the game at Huyck - but mostly they enjoyed sharing Lompoc Defensive Co-ordinator (and Ex Cabrillo Head Coach) Don Cross' hot chocolate as he sat and talked with current Cabrillo Head Coach Craig Knowles.

Football

Cabrillo JV 14 Lompoc JV 13

A wet, but satisfied Bob Radford stood on the field at Huyck Stadium taking it all in for the last time. The long-time Cabrillo coach had just watched his JV squad emerge victorious from the "Little Big Game" with a 14-13 win over the Lompoc Braves. He had announced to the team before the the game that his return to the coaching ranks from retirement had come to an end.

His last team had shown typical Radford traits - they got better and they kept trying. After a 1-4 start to the season, with no loss by more than 9 points, they rebounded to finish the year with five straight wins. They also kept trying Thursday night - an initial attempt to douse the coach was avoided, but a second succeeded. Radford said " I was expecting the first one, but not the second".

There wasn't much that the coach hadn't anticipated. During the week he told his players "Lompoc is like a hurricane. Big and powerful, but you know where its headed. We're like a tornado - unpredictable." and as the bus arrived Thursday night reminded them - "The Tornado is Coming". The result was a swarming Conquistador defense that mostly held a potent Lompoc attack in check.

Cabrillo struck first with a 10-play 44 yard drive that was capped by a 13 yard Twenty Vasquez TD run at 3:40 in the first quarter. Vasquez, who was a stalwart player on both sides of the ball, also kicked the extra points.

Lompoc responded almost immediately. On the ensuing possession, QB Evan Aguilar hit a wide open Lavon Haynes for a 78 yard scoring pass, and Parick Hill's PAT tied it up with 2:44 to go in the initial period.

Neither side was able to score again for quite a while. The Braves came the closest in the first half, picking up a first down at the Cabrillo 7 yard line with 31 seconds left. But they couldn't punch it in. The Conqs would finally break the logjam with a drive that began late in the third stanza. A nice 16 yard punt return by Amari Dixon set them up on the Lompoc 46 yard line. Four plays and a personal foul penalty gave them a first down at the 15, and four plays after that Dixon finished things off with a 2 yard TD run on first & goal. Vasquez hit the PAT for a 14-7 lead.

The Braves were unable to move the ball their next time out and punted. Cabrillo took over with just over 7 minutes left in the game, but couldn't pick up a first down and prepared to kick the ball back to Lompoc. It was not to be. Rookie punter Sal Esparza, who had been great on three previous attempts, couldn't corral a wayward snap that the Braves Abie Luna scooped up and returned to the Cabrillo 28 yard line.

Four plays later, Evan Aguilar scored on a 10 yard QB draw. The Braves eschewed the extra point to tie it, however, and chose to go for two points and the win. The conversion failed as Aguilar was swarmed under by fierce pressure from Matt Giles, who along with Jesus Medrano - his partner on the right side of the defensive line, took over late in the game. But Lompoc was not done. Patrick Hill struck a beautiful onside kick that was recovered by Levi Chagoya, and the Braves were in business just inside the 50.

After an incomplete pass, and two Aguilar scrambles for 7 yards, Aguilar was sacked on fourth down by Nolan Williams and Daniel Cousins. It was typical of Williams play on the night. He had had a bunch of tackles defensively, and also gained important tough yards running the ball. The Cabrillo QB, injury fill-in starter Austin Camblin, took a knee twice in the 'victory ' formation to run out the clock.

The ending was fitting for Radford, who lost the game last year 20-19, after a failed two-point conversion. The coach first came to Cabrillo in 1965 as an assistant to Everett Jones, who was his roommate at the University of Utah where they were both on the football team. He began coaching in Texas in 1958, and later coached in Utah at a rival HS to Jones, whom he drove to Lompoc for his interview.

He spent the rest of his career at Cabrillo, including winning 38 games as the Varsity Head Coach, before retiring from coaching. Thirteen years later, in the mid 90's, he also retired as a teacher at the school. Lured back to the coaching ranks in 2001, he was a player or coach in seven different decades. A consummate professional, who was always prepared, he is also a true gentleman and will no doubt be missed up on the hill.

Cabrillo Frosh 28 Lompoc Frosh 9

Cabrillo used big plays by R.J. Florez (16 yard TD reception from Sam Beltran, 66 yard TD run) and Isaiah Montez (a 95 yard punt return TD) with constant hammering , and a TD, by FB/LB T.J.Babauta to pound the Braves into submission. Babauta also had two interceptions in the end zone. The sole Lompoc TD was scored on a 23 yard Keldon Marmolejo interception return. Steven Pico booted a 35 yard Field Goal for the Braves.

CIF Week #1 Continues

Boys Water Polo

Hoover 17, Cabrillo 9

The Cabrillo boys water polo squad hung tough for almost 3 quarters, but were outscored 8-1 in the last 10 minutes of the game, falling 17-9 to a tough Hoover team. Coach Joel Jory had shown some prescience a few weeks ago. When shown the new CIF playoff alignments, he zeroed in on the Pacific League, saying " that's going to be a tough group to deal with". They were. Hoover, the third place team in the Pacific, consistantly exploited the Conquistadors inexperience down the stretch. Combined with Cabrillo errors it was more than enough. Jory summed it up with "We don't have enough athletes to play poorly and win".
A somewhat dazed Ara Oganesyan was pummeled by celebrants, including several former coaches and players, as the first year Tornado Head Coach saw his team notch their first CIF water polo victory since 1991.
Cabrillo had four players score two goals apiece - Tyler Chard, Brayson Ogan, Jake Motyer, and Garrett Darling. Patrick Robinson chipped in the other one. Hoover was led by Hakop Kaplanyan (9), David Simonyan (3), Tiko Edinchikyan (2), Zolec Karibayan (2), Tarron Ifiktanyan (2), Zleton Kaplanyan, and Andrew Michyel.

Rowland 14, Lompoc 4
Lompoc traveled to Rowland Heights and fell to the Raiders (San Antonio Lg # 2). The Braves played decent defense, racking up 15 steals (Kyle Pickles 4, Michael Ostrander 4), and getting 7 saves from Kyle Thumm. Unfortunately they couldn't find the net consistantly, shooting only 4-22 against the deeper, more experienced team. Rowland took an early lead and Lompoc never recovered. Scorers for the Braves were Daniel Dunaetz (3) and Kyle Pickles.

LPL Girls Tennis Tuesday's Results

Lompoc 13 vs Santa Maria 5
Six Lompoc Seniors celebrated their last appearance on Dave Bickmore Courts by beating the Saints. Lompoc swept doubles and picked up 4 sets in singles - 3 from senior Paty Martinez.

More to follow.

Junior Varsity
Lompoc 9 (76) Santa Maria 9 (75)
LHS JV Coach Jim Steffey, who has been one of the most reliable suppliers of results to LLR, writes "Our last match couldn't have been more exciting. We lost some matches that we shouldn't have lost; but won a couple that I didn't expect to.

We finished under the lights at the Minami Center, with a very exciting last two sets. My number three singles player was up 5 - 2 (and cruising to what I thought was a "for-sure" victory), and my number two singles player was up against Santa Maria's German foreign-exchange student and had only dropped two games in the previous two sets. I figured after the first round when the score was tied 3 - 3, that the match was going to be close, so I kept telling my girls that EVERY game was going to be important. Overall, the match was dead-even at this point, both in sets AND games. Before I knew it Serena's match was tied, and Gold was ahead 5 - 4. Gold prevailed 6 - 4. It was at this point that I thought we might be able to win the match outright by Serena winning her last set. We had 9 sets to their 8. Game-wise, we were now up by two games. In order for us to win the match, Serena had to either win, or go to a tie-breaker. Serena's match went to a tie-breaker (which she unfortunately lost), but by getting to the tie-breaker she could lose by no more than one game. The match ended 9 - 9, with Lompoc prevailing due to more games won, 76 - 75.

A wild one to end the season on for sure. We were missing two of our regular players, Rosa Carreno (she had to take the CAHSEE) and Katelynn Lee (personal). Stepping into the void were two rarely used players, Miriam Lopez and Jessica Smith who got their very first set win of the season, 7 - 5.

The player of the day: Gold Vang for sweeping her three sets."

Back row (left to right): Katelynn Lee, Ashley Branson, Miriam Lopez, Isabel Anguiano, Emily Tremblay, Jessica Smith, and Coach Steffey.

Front row (left to right): Gold Vang, Azucena Villalobos, Serena Zuares, Rosa Carreno, and Julie Abrego.

Cabrillo 6 vs Santa Ynez 12
The Pirates won the doubles 8-1, and took 4 singles matches to salt this one away. More to follow.

Cabrillo vs Morro Bay. Closest match of the day, but the Pirates win in four (21-25, 25-15, 27-25, 25-20). The Conq JV did run thier LPL record to 10-1 with a 2-0 victory (25-14, 25-14).
More to Follow.

LPL Boys Water Polo
The LPL Season Tournament got underway on Tuesday at Paul Nelson Pool in Santa Maria. The Top 2 seeds [Santa Ynez, Cabrillo] earned first round bye's - so # 3 took on #6, and #4 matched up with #5. First round winners met the top 2 seeds in round two with the lowest seed facing #1. The Third round (placing games) are Thursday @ the COLAC.

Morro Bay vs Santa Maria
The Pirates won.

Second Round
Lompoc vs Cabrillo
This was either a heartbreaking loss, or a thrilling comeback - depending on which side you were rootin' for. Lompoc had 5-2, and 6-3 leads, but Cabrillo scored 4 goals in the last 4 1/2 minutes of the fourth period to take it 7-6. Pickles and Dunaetz each had 3 goal for the Braves.

Morro Bay vs Santa Ynez
Can you say BLOWOUT ? Santa Ynez can !! This 24-2 laugher saw 7 Pirates of the orange kind score in double figures - led by Bryce Small with 5. Josh Reed, Sam Ezell, and Adam Parlato each had 3; Nash, Riva, and Barber each had 2; while Hawes, Selguero, Ozimec, & Jones had one apiece. Adam Taylor and Elijah Ozimec each had 4 saves in goal.

5th Place: Santa Maria / St Joseph

LPL Cross-Country
The valley teams have participated in two meets held at River Park recently. The large Santa Barbara County Meet hosted by Lompoc, and the LPL Finals Meet hosted by Cabrillo. Unfortunately, the individual scores for the JV races from the SBC Meet are still a bit on the incomplete and unverified side, but we hope to have them in final form soon.

Santa Barbara County

Cabrillo dominated the boys side - winning both races by easy margins. Levi Block & Eddie Tovar were the top 2 Conq finishers. The Cabrillo girls JV finished 4th, and the rest of the local teams all finished in 7th - 9th place in the various races. Cabrillo varsity girls - 8th. Lompoc varsity squads finished 7th (boys), and 9th (girls). The JV were 8th (boys) and 9th (girls).

LPL Finals
This one was one of the major surprises of the fall - Morro Bay topped the Conquistadors for the boys varsity title - but don't get feeling too sorry for the tribe from the hill. They still finished a close second with a young team and won the JV race with a perfect score. The girls varsity finished out of the money, and out of CIF at 6th, but the JV was 3rd.

Lompoc on the other hand came out of nowhere to capture 3rd place in the girls varsity. Both boys units finished dead center in 4th (of 7 teams), and the 4 freshmen on the girls JV ran well, but posted a No Score since they were lacking a fifth.

Eight locals made the All-LPL Teams.

Individual Results

CIF-SS Girls Golf
The LPL and PAC-7 Individual qualifiers competed over 18 holes at the Soule Park Golf Club in Ojai. The CIF Northern Individual Regional, held on Monday, 3 November 08, was one of two Regionals in Southern Section, and included qualifiers from the Peninsula/ Torance area and over to Burroughs/ Cresenta Valley/ Hart. Teams closer to the local area were DP, Camarillo, Oxnard, Westlake, etc. .
The local girls did really well. Among the 45 (of 79) players who moved on to the finals were 2 of the 3 from both the LPL and the PAC-7. Danielle Gilaspy [St. Joseph 77, T-17th], Morgan Salm [Cabrillo 82, 41st] from the LPL, and Makayla Mier [Righetti 77, T-17th], Mareon Smit [Righetti 83, T-42nd] from the PAC-7. Dos Pueblos also sent on 4 of 5 - so Santa Barbara County put 8 girls into the finals. Sadly, Maddison Shean [Santa Ynez 90] and Sam Sullivan [Arroyo Grande 85] both missed the cut at 84.
