Seniors Rule !!! , LPL All League Teams

The winning seniors & their coaches.

The 3rd Annual "Powder puff" football game at Huyck Stadium Thursday night was decided early, as the Senior squad scored on 3 of its 1st 4 possessions, rolled to a 20-0 halftime lead, then cruised to a 36 - 8 victory. Quarterback Lauren Lopes had a great night as the Senior team leader, completing 7 of 8 passes for 3 TD's in those 4 series and 13-16, 4 TD's for the game. Her favorite target on the evening was Elicity Fabing (8 recpt., 2 TD, 2 PT conv.), but she also hit Cameron Lizarraga on a long TD pass. Betty Sullivan filled the 'jack-of all-trades' role, catching the first TD pass, rushing for the last TD, and rushing for a 2PT conversion in-between. Gabby Gonzales scored the contests final points - a 2PT PAT.

Hilary Davis led the Underclassmen, throwing a TD to Melissa Morrison on the initial series of the 2nd half, and running in the 2PT conversion herself. She was, however, under heavy duress all night from the relentless Senior defense led by Fabing, Lizarraga, Karlie Doran, and Paty Martinez. Rayshonne Duel-Ray contributed several passes defensed and an interception to the Seniors effort. Cindy Emerson, Brandy Machado, Brianna Rector, & Shandee Berryman led the Underclassman defense.

Most importantly, it was a successful fundraiser for LHS Activities & Athletics - and no-one got hurt.

Duffy Shows Grit; Church to DL

Duffy Bears Down with Runners On

DANNY DUFFY shut out the Frederick Keys over six innings Tuesday night but the most impressive aspect was how he did it…with grit.

Instead of striking out 18, he worked three of the six frames with runners in scoring position yet did not yield.

In the third inning he gave up a lead-off double but proceeded to induce three straight ground balls to retire the side.

In the fourth he relinquished two singles but got his first out on a fly ball and then retired the side on a double play grounder.

And in the fifth after one out he gave up a bunt single and a single to right but responded with a ground ball force out and a strike out to close the inning.

In the first inning he sat down the Keys 1-2-3, and the second and the sixth were marred by an error and a walk.

Duffy gave up five hits over his six innings and struck out five while walking one. His won-loss record remains at 5-1 since he did not receive credit for the victory. He departed with the score still tied at 0-0.

With the spotless performance the 20-year-old Duffy lowered his earned run average to 3.00. Duffy has allowed only 42 hits over 48 innings and his strikeout-walk ratio is a spectacular 46-13.

Wilmington ultimately won the contest 1-0. Wilmington is the Advanced-A level affiliate of the Kansas City Royals who drafted Duffy in the third round in 2006. Frederick is affiliated with the Baltimore Orioles. Duffy was the youngest player on either roster.

Church to DL

One day after receiving good news from an MRI, rightfielder RYAN CHURCH was placed on the disabled list by the New York Mets. Church is nursing a right hamstring injury and has not played since leaving Friday night's game in Boston.

It was around this time last season when Church missed close to two months with a concussion. He's happy at least that the injury is a little simpler this time.

"I'd rather deal with this thing than my head," Church said. "It's not going to be two months -- I'm not dizzy, and I know who I am."

Church Leaves with Hamstring

Mets Break Slide but Lose Church

BOSTON -- As if the Mets didn't have enough injuries already, outfielder RYAN CHURCH left Friday's 5-3 victory over the Red Sox in the fourth inning with a sore right hamstring. Though Church said he should be ready to play again on Saturday, manager Jerry Manuel said that he is unlikely to do so.

"My hammy's been bugging me lately," Church said. "It's actually caused my torso on my right side to get out of whack. I just finally had enough."

Church, 30, was batting .272 with one home run and eight RBIs, splitting playing time with Gary Sheffield in right field. After flying out to lead off the top of the fourth inning, he jogged out to his position to warm up in the bottom of the inning, then returned to the dugout at Manuel's request. Angel Pagan replaced him in right field.

"It was limiting me [from] going out there and giving everything I've got," Church said.

The Mets are already playing without starting shortstop Jose Reyes, who is battling tendinitis in his right calf; first baseman Carlos Delgado, who is recovering from hip surgery; and catcher Brian Schneider, who is on the disabled list with a strained back.

Duffy Notches Number Five

Now Leads KC Minor Leaguers

Salem, VA - The Wilmington Blue Rocks knocked off the Salem Red Sox Wednesday night 8-4 in a Carolina League contest. More important DANNY DUFFY racked up his fifth victory of the season.
How is that so significant, you ask?
Because Duffy’s five victories rank No. 2 in the Carolina League and No.1 among all the Kansas City Royals minor leaguers.

Duffy, now 5-1, gave up four hits and a couple of runs in the fourth but he struck out Matt Sheely to minimize damage and strand a pair of runners. He allowed three runs on seven hits over five innings, walking two and striking out five. It was a workmanlike performance that allowed him to depart with a 7-3 lead.

Duffy’s statistics show a 3.43 earned run average, up a bit thanks to those three Salem runs, 37 hits allowed in 42 innings, and a strikeout to walk ratio of 41-12—all blue chip.

Salem is a Boston Red Sox affiliate. Duffy is ranked Kansas City’s sixth best prospect according to Baseball America.

Church, Manuel Say No Rift

Despite Questionable Moves, Mets Manager Says He Likes Churchie

LOS ANGELES -- Months of Internet conversation and drive-time chatter came bubbling over in Dodger Stadium's visiting dugout prior to Tuesday's game, when Mets manager Jerry Manuel came clean on his relationship with Ryan Church.

Merely a day after referring to Church as "that guy" and expressing both anger and bewilderment when Church stepped over third base, costing the Mets Monday's game, Manuel said that the public perception regarding his relationship with Church couldn't be further from the truth.

"I don't know what you all talk about on the radio, but Ryan is a good player," Manuel said. "I like Ryan.

"I don't have a rift with anyone on the team ... I don't know why people think I have a deal with Ryan Church -- I really don't. I don't have a problem with Ryan. Not at all. I like to egg him on and mess with him a little bit like I do with everybody, but I love to see Ryan every day. He comes to the park every day early. I love to see Ryan Church."

And Church, for his part, returned the sentiment. Recalling a conversation he had with his manager early in Spring Training, Church said that Manuel had prepared him for some harsh treatment this season, wanting to toughen up a player that he called a "critical" piece for the Mets.

"You want somebody on you," Church said. "You take it as a positive thing. His door is always open. He's one of those guys, he's approachable if you ever have something wrong. That's the thing -- I don't read too much into this stuff. People are yelling stuff in the stands -- 'doghouse!' -- that kind of thing. But they're not here, they're not around me, seeing what the relationship is."
It's something that first came under scrutiny in Spring Training, when Manuel publicly challenged Church's ability to hit in the clutch and called young Daniel Murphy a better hitter -- strange statements considering Church's veteran status and struggles last season with post-concussion syndrome.

Often, Church was assigned to long bus trips during Spring Training -- trips usually reserved for the younger members of a team. Despite Church's hot start, Manuel benched him on several occasions in April. And later in the month, the Mets acquired Gary Sheffield, further cutting into Church's playing time.

All of that seemed to convey the sense that a growing tension had hatched between Manuel and Church -- something that both parties refuted on Tuesday.

"People read too much into it," Church said. "If they were in here, they'd see it's different."
"Back in the day, me and old Frank Thomas had some issues, but that was that," Manuel said, referring to his time as manager of the White Sox. "That was me and Frank. But I don't have a problem with Ryan. I like Ryan. We need Ryan Church. We need every guy in there, but Ryan Church is the guy that we feel has the potential -- if he gets right -- he can really carry us."
And the fact that Manuel openly criticized Church after Monday's game, he said, was a product of frustration -- a good player making a bad play.

"Oh, you doggone right I was mad at him," Manuel said. "I could have strangled him. If it had been my son, I'd have strangled him. How in the world you do that, boy? But that's that. If my son would have missed third base, I would have treated him the same way."

Church's chances to play Wednesday improved when Dodgers left-hander Eric Stults was scratched from his start with a jammed left thumb. Church is 2-for-3 lifetime against Stults' replacement, the right-handed Jeff Weaver, who will be opposed by Livan Hernandez.

Weak Pen Dooms Duffy; Church Hits

Gets No Decision Instead of Fifth Win

DANNY DUFFY delivered another of his blue-chip performances Friday night in Lynchburg, Virginia but the relief corps of the Wilmington Blue Rocks could not match it.

Duffy left after five innings leading 3-1 in the Carolina League contest but league-leading Lynchburg struck for five runs in the late innings to win 6-4.

Duffy faced the minimum of three batters in the first and third innings, and saw only four in the fourth and fifth. He gave up his one run in the second on a single, a walk and another single. He struck out three, walked one and gave up four hits.

For the season Duffy now boasts a 4-1 won-loss record, has given up just 30 hits in 37 innings, and has a whopping strikeout-to-walk ratio of 36-10. He pared his earned run average down to 3.16 with Friday’s effort.

The Lynchburg Hillcats are the Advanced Class A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Wilmington is with the Kansas City Royals.

Church Shakes Slump

In San Francisco RYAN CHURCH rapped two base hits Friday night to give evidence he may be emerging from a three-week batting slump.

In Church's last two-hit contest twenty games back he racked up three RBI against the Washington Nationals to put his batting average at a blazing .358. Since then he has gone 8-for-50 for .160 to drop his average to .262 entering tonight's contest. He now finds himself at .269.

The Mets play Saturday and Sunday in San Francisco before moving south to face the Dodgers Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

Mets Remember Church; Hacker Stars; LPL

Church Sits Again, Delivers Late

RYAN CHURCH, identified by New York Mets manager Jerry Manuel as "our right fielder" in spring training, sat for the eighth time in the team's first 32 games Tuesday night. But before the game, Manuel and Church staged an extended batting session in the cage under the stands and adjacent to the Mets' clubhouse.

Church seemingly had fallen into disfavor with the manager to such a degree that Church used the phrase "forgotten man" when he discussed his situation. But he was quite pleased by the time he spent with the manager.

"I think we worked some things out," Church said. "I appreciate the time he spent with me. It helped."

And he was more pleased when he contributed an important pinch-hit single to the Mets' 4-3, 10-inning victory. Church singled -- to the opposite field as prescribed by his manager -- with one out and a man on in the seventh. Moments later, he and Reed scored on Jose Reyes' double into the left-center filed gap. The runs were the Mets' first.

Before the game Manuel had Church involved in a modified version of the "80 in six" the team used in Spring Training -- "Rapid fire, rapid hitting," Church called it. But this time, no pitching machine was involved -- Manuel threw, no breaking balls were thrown and, by Church's estimation, he hit about 100 balls.

"Jerry probably needs to ice," Church said. "... The idea was to tire my lower half, so I'd concentrate on my hands. Hitting is hands and eyes. ... I had to swing at every pitch, no matter where it was. ... After a while, I made better contact. The sound of the ball off the bat was different. I wasn't jumping out. When I jump at pitches, the barrel [of the bat] drops and I hit weak fly balls and pop ups."

Church said he didn't think he was hitting all that well in early games when his batting average suggested he was.

"I didn't really feel like I had a swing," he said. "I think it felt better today, actually."

Earlier, reporter Marty Noble stuck up for Church.

I don't get what the Mets have against Ryan Church. He starts off hot, then they start subbing for him liberally, then wonder why he starts to slide. Church is a good player, possibly one who can help carry a team at times during the long season. Let the guy play! I can see giving him a day off against some lefties, but overall, this is a better lineup with Church than with Gary Sheffield in there. Give him the job, the time to settle in, and I think the RBIs will come.-- Steven G., address not provided

You hardly are alone in your wonder. My sense of it, and that of others, including men in uniform, is that Church has been shortchanged -- in words, plans and, since the season began, playing time. It began early in Spring Training. The comments manager Jerry Manuel made about him then seemed unnecessarily uncomplimentary. Then Church made most of the trips and played as much as anyone other than Daniel Murphy in exhibition games. He was exhausted by mid-March. Since Opening Day, he has become the player most affected by the batting-order imbalance -- too many left-handed hitters.

Church is a fine outfielder, the best defensive right fielder the Mets franchise has had, and he ought to be in right as often as possible in Citi Field. He plays hard; no one can quarrel with that. And he was hitting early on

LPL ACTION

Blue, Black, Blue, Green

The Braves hosted the Templeton Eagles in both baseball & softball, while the Conqs had St. Joseph visit the hill in both sports. Three of the games were very close ...

Baseball
Lompoc 9, Templeton 2
This was the lone exception. Lompoc had every starter reach base safely. Scottie Aguailar led the way with a 2 RBI double, the sole extra-base hit and a single. Nick Tatague also had two hits.

Ryan Bower allowed 2 (earned) runs in 5 innings on 3 hits and 2 walks while striking out 6. Dalton Rouleau finished up with 1 hit 2 frames. He did make it interesting in the 7th by tossing 9 straight balls at the start, but then collected two of his 4 strikouts. The game ended when the runner at second attemted to score on a two-out single to left and was erased at the plate.

Cabrillo 7, St. Joseph 6 [STORY]
This is not the result anyone who saw the top half of the 1st would have expected. Starter Niko Shaefnitz had one of "those" days, and lasted only 2/3 of an inning, as the Knights scored 5 runs in the 1st. Cabrillo responded with 3 in the bottom half of the first, but St Joe tallied another run in the 2nd off of reliever Aaron Naputi. That was their final score, however, while the "Comeback Conqs" showed up again. They posted 3 runs in the 3rd to tie and one in the 5th for the win.

Zach Pecyna (2 runs scored), Chuck Mertz (hit, RBI, 3 RS), Niko Shaefnitz (hit, 2 RS), Tony Salangsang (hit, 3 RBI), and Kevin Harmon (hit, 2 RBI) provided the offensive juice.

Softball
Lompoc 1, Templeton 0
The Braves didn't play well in this one - at least at the plate. For example: bottom of the fourth, runners at 2nd & 3rd, nobody out was translated into ZERO runs. Bottom 5th: walk, caught stealing, grounder to the pitcher, single - runner to 3rd, weak grounder to the pitcher.

They finally broke the scoreless tie in the 6th, when Paty Martinez lined a double to the fence in left centerfield. Melissa Morrison came in to pinch-run, and moved up 60 feet on a roller back to the pitcher. She then scored on a sharp grounder past the second-baseman that should have been a hit, but the batter cruised to first and was thrown out. A strikeout finished the inning.

Fortunately, Jeana Carrillo had her pitching stuff together. Only 2 runners reached base for the Eagles (a single and an error in the early innings), while she struckout 5 and walked none. Elicity Fabing (2-2) and Paty Martinez (2-3) split the Braves 4 hits.

Other Notes
Cabrillo JV Baseball
We received this note from a correspondent -

" I have been keeping track of the Cabrillo JV baseball team this season and have been amazed with their progress. They are currently somewhere in the record neighborhood of 18-4-1. They have a roster of about 13 kids, with almost half of them being freshman. This team is a well put together group of kids. The coaches are doing a great job with them, and it is shown during games.

To top it all off, the catcher, a kid named Nathan Reed hit for the cycle on Friday against Templeton. I know that this is only JV level baseball, but hitting for the cycle is a rare feat in baseball, and there has been no coverage in either the Lompoc Record or your website. I think this kid and all the others on this team deserve some attention, they are hard working and talented young men that will suprise many people in the years to come.

Sincerely, Matt"

Thanks for the heads-up Matt. If you, or anyone else have items we missed or messed up you can always post it on the Forum [See upper right hand column] for everone to see. I should also note that Nathan Reed has been one of the team's pitching stalwarts throughout the season.

Duffy is Baaaaaaaack!!

Duffy Fires Shutout

DANNY DUFFY once again lived up to his hype Friday night as he sat down the Frederick Keys on three hits and no runs over 6 1/3 innings in a Carolina League game.

The Kansas City Royals prospect struck out nine and walked nobody as his Wilmington Blue Rocks prevailed 3-0.

Duffy allowed only three harmless singles and did not allow a runner past first base as he recorded his fourth victory in five decisions and lowered his earned run average to 3.38. His strikeout to walk ratio is now 33-9.

Duffy retired the side in order in the first, third, fourth and fifth innings. In the second and sixth he allowed a two-out single. In the seventh he gave up a one-out single before being lifted for a reliever.

The scintillating performance comes after two outings which statistically were not up to the Duffy standard. In two games both against Winston-Salem Duffy gave up eight earned runs in 10 total innings while striking out just five and walking six.

Tonight showed that Duffy is back in a big way.

The Keys are a Baltimore Oriole affiliate while Winston-Salem is with the Chicago White Sox. The Carolina League is Class A-advanced league.

Ornelas Stars, White's Bat Heating, Church Slumps

Times are Good for Ben Ornelas and Chris White; not so much for Ryan Church

BEN ORNELAS at Lewis-Clark State was named all-region Thursday after a booming weekend with the bat over the weekend on a road trip to Utah.

Here’s a note from his mom:

We just came back from Ben's series in St. George, Utah vs. Dixie State. Ben did very well and it was nice to see him looking strong and healthy. He went 5-6 in one of his games with two singles, two doubles, and a homer that went so far it stunned their fans. They won the game 21-11. It was amazing to see Ben's teammates hit back-to-back-to-back homers one pitch each.

And the official release from the NAIA—

Five Warriors earn region honors
5/7/2009
VANCOUVER, British Columbia – Five members of the Lewis-Clark State College baseball team earned Region I honors, including four on the All-Region I team.

Coaches from the eight schools in the region voted for the teams.

Senior outfielder Sean Halton joined junior infielders Ben Ornelas and Josh Ashenbrenner, and pitcher Tom Peale on the all-Region I squad.

Ornelas, who is from Lompoc, Calif., made an immediate impact after becoming eligible a month into the season. He is hitting .407 in 31 games and is second on the team in home runs with seven and is third in RBI with 42. He also has eight doubles and is tied for the team lead in triples with two.

And in the pro’s

CHRIS WHITE, who was added to the roster of the Lakeland Flying Tigers almost as an afterthought, is making the Detroit organization remember his name.

White did not play regularly when he arrived in Lakeland but over the last 10 days he has been penciled in in centerfield almost every day, and he has delivered.

With a 3-for-3 day on Tuesday White is now batting .311, third highest on the team.

Lakeland is in the Florida State League, an Advanced A league like the Carolina League where Danny Duffy performs. White, like Duffy, is making the jump from low-A where he played with West Michigan in 2008.

RYAN CHURCH on the other hand was blazing early, but is suffering through a 1-for-24 slump. The dry spell has tumbled his batting average from .356 nine games ago to .265 at the moment.

BOYS TENNIS
Lompoc 10, St Joseph 8 [STORY] at David Bickmore Courts

It was Lompoc doubles versus St Joe singles in this contest to decide second place in the LPL. The Braves recorded some late round comebacks to pull this one out.

In the final round, Lompoc up 7-5, needed to win three of the six sets.

First up was singles, but the Brave's #2, Robert Rodriguez, lost to St. Joseph’s #3, Jacob Goeres. That put the pressure on Kyle Thumm, who trailed Hayes Dunn 5-4, but in a volitile contest yanked a 7-5 victory out from under the Knights.

And so the final set of the match; Lompoc's #2 doubles, Oscar Rodriguez / Cooper Barrick, fought back from a 3-0 deficit to the Knight's Matt Hiltner / Niles Johnson to win 6-4. A St Joe advantage in total games would have given them the win had the teams tied at nine sets apiece.

Singles
Thumm finished 2-1 on the day dropping only a 6-1 set to St. Joseph’s # 1 Jake Eszes.
Eszes was 3-0 [6-1, 6-2, 6-0] and has lost only four sets in the LPL. The third seed at the LPL Individual Finals on Friday.

Doubles
Lompoc took 7 of 9 doubles sets. Alex Jensen / Joel Martin, 32-1 on the season, won all three sets [6-2, 6-1, 6-0], while duos #2 Rodriguez / Barrick, and Carlos Diaz / Chris Aldama, each captured 2-3.

Santa Maria @ Cabrillo - No Results

Santa Ynez (14-5, 12-0 LPL) 18, Morro Bay 0

Santa Ynez cruised to the Los Padres League championship by whacking Morro Bay at home. Doubles tandem Curtis Cole /Austin White lost just one game while sweeping three sets.

Duffy Takes Revenge

Shuts Down Winston-Salem

Facing the same Winston-Salem club which earlier in the week handed him his first defeat since last July DANNY DUFFY chalked up his third win in four decisions Saturday night in a Carolina League game.

Duffy shut out the Dash (yes, that’s their name) through the first five innings while his Wilmington mates built up a 6-0 lead.

He gave up a triple and a single in the sixth, only the third and fourth hits against him, before departing so the misleading box score shows two earned runs in five innings.

His earned run average is now 4.21 his strikeout to walk ratio 24-9.
Duffy was uncharacteristically wild with four bases on balls, a career high. He fanned four.

Also, former Cal Poly slugger Brent Morel who homered twice against Duffy when they last met, went hitless against him this time on a strikeout and a fly ball.
