Historic Playoff Appearance for Lompoc Volleyball [11 Nov 2014]

Yoshary Montelongo and Yolanda Anguiano were all smiles after beating Cabrillo for the 2nd time this season.

Girls Volleyball

Lompoc High School

Today, the Lompoc High School Girls Volleyball team heads south to the San Gabriel Valley to take on Gabrielino HS in a CIF-SS First Round contest. For many schools and in many sports at LHS this would be a routine matter at the end of the regular season, but for this group of Braves it is something very different.

According to research by a former LHS Coach this squad has accomplished things rarely seen since the days of their parents.

In this, the 40th season of the program, they have posted the

- first CIF playoff appearance since 1992 (22 years)
- first regular season winning record since 1985 (29 years)
- only the 5th CIF playoff appearance in program history
- only the 5th winning season in program history
- second best regular season record in program history (1981: 13-2)
- only the second season of double-digit wins in program history

That 1981 team won the only League title in program history, and had Kathy "Crash" Rodriguez (Back Row Specialist) and Ramona Carpio (Setter) as  teammates. They are, as Brad Memberto put it in his Lompoc Record piece

"Now known as Ramona Thomas and Kathy Marmolejo, they are proud parents of Chyanne Thomas and Cheyenne Marmolejo, two key players for this year's team."

"Monie" (Carpio) Thomas is also a long time coach with the program, usually handling the JV team.

In addition to Thomas, a senior all-around all-league player, and Marmalejo a front-line presence although just a sophomore, the Braves have had outstanding play from setter Lexie Barbosa and libero Yolanda Anguiano. Angel La Shore, Yoshari Montelongo, and Shance Starr have added depth to the front row with Sam Croker helping out the defense.

The program began varsity play back in 1975 under gentle bearded giant, and popular Biology teacher, Pat Clevenger. He helmed the the team for 7 years (45-49 record), getting the Braves to the playoffs 2 of his last 3 years. His final season being the 1981 Northern League Championship squad which is, so far, the only team to advance to the 2nd Round of the CIF Tournament.

Lompoc made the playoffs 3 times under 3 different coaches from 1985 to 1992, but has not returned until this year.

The Current Team

Lompoc is 10-7 (9-5 LPL) in regular matches (Tourney Records: 3-2 at the Segerstrom, 3-1-1 at the Coast Union). Nicole Rudolph took over the team on 7 October 2014 and the girls have since posted a 6-3 record. While the Braves tied for 3rd with Morro Bay, they received the #4 LPL.

Their opponents from Gabrielino HS (San Gabriel) are the Mission Valley League Champs. The Eagles have a 26-3, 12-0 record this year. They did lose last year at home in the 1st round to -- Morro Bay.
