Santa Ynez at Lompoc

Varsity
Santa Ynez 3, Lompoc 0
(25-17. 25-20, 25-13)

The score may not look real impressive, but the Braves haven't taken 20 points off the Pirates in a set, 50 points total in many a match. Despite their youth and the considerable experience gap between the two squads, Lompoc played pretty well. Santa Ynez coach Chip Fenenga simply stated - "This is one of the best teams they've had since I've been here."

The Braves, who did not have their best outing versus the Pirates, contested most rallies but too often couldn't close them out and take the point.

Part of the problem was the Pirates superior depth, which allowed them to spread the ball around to a variety of players, while Lompoc was a bit "predictable" according to Fenega.

The Braves did tend to feed the ball to Chyanne Thomas on offense and she caught fire in the 2nd game to help keep Lompoc in the set, but in addition they as a squad tended to try the same shots/locations with inconsistent levels of success.

The locals also had trouble finishing sets - losing the last 3 points of the 1st (after closing within 5), the final 4 of the 2nd (down 1), and 4 of 5 to conclude the 3rd.

Still, this is a much improved Lompoc team that looks to get even better in the future.

Pirates [13-9, 11-2]: Taylor Nation 11 kills, 5 aces; Alexandra Carlson 21 assists, 6 kills, ace; Kassidy Hamer 9 kills, 2 aces; Hannah Rogers 4 kills, 2 aces; Hannah Cantrell 5 kills; Taylor Gregg 2 aces; Nicole Ramirez 4 digs (early)..

Braves [8-5]: Chyanne Thomas 7 kills, 5 aces (all in 2nd); Cheyenne Marmalejo 4 kills, ace, block; Lexie Barbosa 13 assists, ace; Yoshary Montelongo 3 aces, kill, assist; Shance Starr kill; Alivia Sawyer block.

Templeton at Cabrillo

Due to the Football games , these matches
were played on, Saturday, 1 November [FR 11a, JV 12p, V 1p] at the Cabrillo Gym.

Varsity
Templeton 3, Cabrillo 0
(25-14. 25-15, 25-4)

In the the 1st set the Eagles ran out to an early 12-3 lead before the Conqs could reel them back a bit. The visitors closed with an 8-3 run after Cabrillo crawled within six. In the 2nd, the home squad kept it closer early - getting within a single point at 9-10, but were out scored 11-4 down the stretch. In the 3rd set Templeton got serious, rolling to a 17-1 advantage and coasting across the victory line.

Cabrillo just never quite got in sync, due in large measure to the Eagles who had significant contributions from throughout the line-up. Templeton also had some 'luck' with numerous shots, including nearly a dozen serves, catching the top tape of the net and rolling over. Good, Talented, Well-coached, and Lucky is a very hard combo to beat.

Eagles [24-7,13-0]: Morgan Lawson (# 21) 10 kills, 3 blocks, 2 aces; Lucy Portillo (# 14) 8 kills, 3 blocks; Lauren Ralston (# 3) 8 kills, 9 digs; Josi Kelly (# 12) 21 assists; Emily Burns (# 11) 6 aces, 3 kills; Hannah McRoy (# 22) 12 assists; Sarah Bolts (# 1) 10 digs.

Week # 9 Scores - Final Update [Sun, 2 Nov 2014]

On Friday, Lompoc gave up a score just before the deluge began, but managed to hold on to the ball in sloppy conditions better than the Panthers and pulled out the win 21-0. The JV got spanked 56-14, however.

Thursday night Cabrillo spotted St Joseph 28 points, then squandered opportunities to get back into the game - falls 55-27 after also surrendering big plays late. JV lost 40-0.

Xander Robinett was featured on the Game Program, and then won the Sunset Chevrolet Player of the Game award.

Always fun to see a big guy with the the football. St Joseph 's Jose Garcia  in only his 2nd game as an offensive 'skill' player scored his first two TD's ever against the Conqs - a 10 yard pass reception & a 1 yard run.

Tuesday's Action Is Good for the Valley + Wednesday Update [28-29 Oct 2014]

Cabrillo JV almost always decorates the scoreboard, but they don't always have Jenna Marbles references.

It was a very good day for Lompoc - the varsity squads all won. Girls Tennis edged Nipomo, Boys Water Polo also beat the Titans, and Girls Volleyball stunned Morro Bay.

Cabrillo also did well topping Santa Maria in both Girls Tennis and Orcutt Academy in Girls Volleyball. {Cabrillo won both the Varsity & JV Boys Water Polo matches on Wednesday.}

Making it even more amazing was the fact that all 5 varsity contests were ON THE ROAD !!! The lower level teams won several times, but results from those tussles are still incomplete.

GIRLS TENNIS

Several matches finished in darkness, or near darkness - Lompoc at Nipomo and Arroyo Grande at St Joseph among them.

LOS PADRES LEAGUE

The Braves Varsity stunned the Pirates in straight sets on their Senior Night, but it was close. Lompoc Head Coach Nicole Rudolph believed that the Pirates were surprised by the situation and that it helped - "We led most of the time. So we were able to maintain momentum and stay on top of them. I think they got a little frazzled."

(25-23, 25-21, 25-23)

The Greyhounds, who lost 3-0 earlier this season to SLO at home, returned the favor Tuesday night and broke a tie for 2nd place in the Pac-8. It was close though - SLO had leads late in all 3 sets.

Atascadero has won their last 6 matches, while the Tigers were playing their 2nd consecutive without Holland Boege. The star junior sustained an ankle injury last week and Liesl Eibschutz (Sr, Opp) has been out for 3 weeks.

On Thursday, the Arroyo Grande Eagles (22-3, 12-0) visit Atascadero for Senior Night and a loss by the Greyhounds would keep alive the possibility of a tie with San Luis Obispo for second place.

Greyhounds [17-12, 10-2]: Katherine Sedley (Sr, OH) 12 kills, 3 blocks; Kaylie Griffin 16 kills; Maren Cracknell 8 kills, 5 blocks; Brooke Harbottle (Jr, S) 38 assists. Sabrina Degnan (Sr, Lib) also played well.

Tigers [20-7, 9-3]:  Morgan Day (Jr) 12 kills; Rilee Day (Fr) 10 kills; Merissa Brancart 31 assists; Callie Hamari 14 digs for San Luis Obispo (), which led 22-19 in the first set, 18-17 in the second and 20-19 in the third but could never put together a run when it mattered most.
