Tuesday, 29 November 2016

It's preseason, so there are a bunch of LPL-P8 match-ups. So far the PAC-8 is winning.

Lompoc and SLO each started their 2016-17 Campaigns at Huyck on Tuesday.

Lompoc Head Coach

the business.
SLO 5, Lompoc 1
[Half 3-0 SLO]

The D4 Braves played fairly well against the D3 Tigers, but turnovers in the back and midfield led to several fast break opportunities for San Luis - and they converted enough of them. Lompoc only has 1 senior on the squad, to compare with 1 frosh & 7 sophs - most of whom were making their varsity/Huyck Stadium/night game debut. Several of the 8 juniors are also new to the varsity.

One of the sophomores, Michelle Hill, had a generally solid time in the cage, but faced far too many uncontested attackers inside the box, including one occasion where a defender slipped and fell. She stopped 7 of the Tigers 12 shots on goal.

Lompoc had difficulty generating offense taking only 6 shot with a mere two of those actually on-goal.

The sole Brave tally came about 15 minutes into the 2nd half. A nice set-up resulted in a corner kick which was deflected, but Lompoc maintained possession inside the box. A pair of short passes found junior midfielder Hannah Montalban with some space on the right side about 10m out and she buried the ball in the south goal.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Central Coast Classic Tournament

Righetti 74, Lompoc 55
at Bryan Ayer Court, Paisola Pavillion, Lompoc HS
[L: 13,8,16,18-55  R: 17,23,18,16-74]

The Warriors scored the last 14 points of the 2nd period and the first 7 points of the 3rd, using their superior height and depth to pull away from the out-manned Braves. Four members of the 12 player Lompoc squad are still with the football team, including point guard Kameron Davis and much of the front line.

The Braves late team videographer, James Eberling, was honored by the team with a brief ceremony before the game. Eberling, who passed away a week ago from heart failure at 36 years old, had performed video duties for Lompoc the last two years. His funeral was held earlier in the afternoon.

Both teams were looking for their initial win in the nascent season, each having dropped their openers last Tuesday. The Braves fell to AG 63-41, while Righetti narrowly lost 62-59 at Santa Barbara. Both will continue CCC play on next week - Lompoc at Pioneer Valley on Tuesday, Righetti hosts Dos Pueblos on Wednesday.

Braves [0-2]: Ben Odom 24, Ryan Morgan 15, Jeffrey Ray 6, Andrew Villa 6

Warriors [1-1]: Jordan Allen 23 (21 1H), Dakota Saunders 14 points, Justin Tonascia 6.

Just a Skosh Short ...

FOOTBALL

CIF-SS/FORD Playoffs

Corona del Mar 35, Lompoc 34
[L: 7 ,14,7,6-34  Cdm; 0,10,7,18-35]

Well, as Lompoc PA Announcer Tom Garrard might say, the Braves came up a shosh short against a very good Corona del Mar squad Friday night. The Sea Kings staged a furious 4th Quarter rally, culminating in a TD pass with just 45 seconds remaining, to win by a point for the second week in a row. They dominated most of the 2nd half with the exception of the first Lompoc possession and this gem -

which put Lompoc back up briefly late in the 4th period. They lost in similar fashion last fall at Thousand Oaks 34-31.

The Braves conclude a great season with a 12-1 record. It was Coach Andrew Jones' 10th loss in 7 seasons, he is now 81-10 overall, 16-5 in CIF competition.
