Coe Sets New Cal Record

MICHAEL COE set a new University of California record for the mile run Saturday in Berkeley-- 3:56.18

It was the fastest mile in the nation so far this season and also the third fastest mile time IN THE WORLD this year.

Also in track & field DUANE SOLOMON won the 800 at the Mt. SAC Relays April 11 with another best-in-the nation time --1:46.85.

In football Hancock College defensive back JOSEPH SCOTT has accepted a football scholarship at Union College in Kentucky. Union finished last season ranked No. 10 in the NAIA and won the Mid-South Conference title with a 9-3 (5-1) record.

In college baseball BEN ORNELAS is unloading on Lewis-Clark's opponents. Big Ben, playing first base, is currently batting .408, second best on the perennial NAIA champs' roster, and his slugging percentage of .694 is numero uno. The small-school Warriors knocked off the University of Washington this week.

Lompoc 11, Santa Maria 1 [5 Innings]

In the bottom of the 5th inning, Lauren Lopes hit a 2-run double, and a throwing error on a Dana Campitelli grounder scored another run. Then Jeana Carrillo's run scoring double sealed the Saints fate as the Braves topped Santa Maria 11-1.

The home-standing Braves collected a number of extra-base hits - Paty Martinez had a triple, while Elicity Fabing, Lopes (2-4), Campitelli, and Carrillo each had doubles. Carrillo pitched 4 no-hit innings, allowing 1 unearned run, before being relieved by Jasmine Taylor who gave up an opposite field single to right but no runs.


Cabrillo 9, Santa Ynez 6

Amanda Leake & Kiley Shae Aldridge each tossed 3 innings as the Conqs held off a late surge to beat the Pirates at CHS. Cabrillo was up 9-4 with a runner on first and two out in the top of the 7th, with Aldridge in the circle, when the Pirates caught a break.

A swinging third strike pitch ricocheted under catcher Lindsie Hollowell's facemask, striking her in the neck & jaw. She was able to stay in the game after a few minutes recuperation, but the next batter up singled home both runners. A subsequent walk put runners on the corners heading into the meat of the line-up. Aldridge, however, induced a slow grounder to first to end the game without furthur damage.

Leake allowed 2 runs and Aldridge gave up 4 more. The offense was led by Adriana Segura (3 hits including a double, 3 RBI), Gabi Palacios (2-5, RBI), and Kelcie Jo Pecyna (double).

Ryan Bower went 6 strong innings - 2 hits & 1 earned run, and Daniel Dunaetz threw one frame of scoreless relief which was highlighted by second baseman Scottie Aguailar's spectacular diving catch .
Each team scored once in the 1st, but the Braves added 2 runs each in the 3rd & 5th stanzas. Daniel Mallory doubled for Lompoc.

Santa Ynez 12, Cabrillo 3
The Pirates continued to romp through the league, stunning the Donald M. MacIntyre Field crowd with a 7-run out-burst in the top of the first. They would add 3 more in the fourth, and solo runs in the second & sixth.

The Conqs never really could solve starter Todd Whitmore (who went 6), or reliever Nathan Thompson, but they did get single runs across in the 1st, 6th , and 7th. Brian Engler, Niko Schaefnitz, and Aaron Naputi allowed 12 hits and 12 runs on the mound - but only 4 of them were earned since the defense contributed 4 errors to the effort.

In the lone Templeton singles win, Brady Peracca defeated Joe Hermann 7-6 (7-5), while in
the Eagles most convincing doubles win of the day, Sam and Ben Rubin, defeated Logan Deats and Grant Collison, 6-1.

Morro Bay lost all nine doubles matches and #1 singles player Mike Ion dropped his initial set to Jake Eszes 6-0, but came back to win two of the Pirates 4 points ( 6-2, 6-0). Eszes swept 6-0, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles for St. Joseph.

Knights doubles pairs Hayes Dunn /Jacob Goeres, Brian Turton / Tyler Chamness, and James Xing / Taylor Monroy all swept three sets.

Sargeant to Buffalo

SIGNS QUICK WITH THE BILLS
















Lompoc's LYDELL SARGEANT signed a free agent contract with the Buffalo Bills today, according to KSBY-TV. The cornerback was a second team all-Big 10 pick last season for Penn State.

Sargeant was not taken in the weekend's NFL draft, but his signing quickly on Monday seems to indicate genuine interest on the part of the Bills.

The Cabrillo High grad had been expected to be picked in the late rounds.

The competition for the LPL's four individual slots in the CIF-SS individual tournament is heating up. The Pirate's Matt Hansen, the League leader, did not play due to illness, but his teammate, Eric Olsen, shot a 36 to Medal and move within a point of the LPL #4 spot.

Duffy Suffers First Loss Since Last July

Gives up two homers and five RBI to ex-Mustang

WINSTON-SALEM, NC -- Former Cal Poly Mustang Brent Morel entered Sunday’s Carolina League contest with the Winston-Salem Dash batting a weak 229. In nine games last year’s Big West Conference RBI leader had amassed a total of only two (2) RBI.

But in today’s contest against Kansas City’s Wilmington club Morel, the White Sox’ third round draft pick last year, blasted two home runs and plated five RBI, all of them against Lompoc’s DANNY DUFFY.

Nice for Morel whose family back in Bakersfield was cheering. Not so nice for Duffy who came in carrying a 2-0 record and a 2.30 ERA and who seemed a cinch to move up before season’s end.

Duffy gave up three home runs, two to Morel, and six earned runs total, five thanks to the former Mustang.

All that in just six innings. Suddenly Duff’s ERA is 4.35 and he puts his pants on one leg at a time just like everybody else.

He suffered his first defeat since July 3 last year, a span of 12 starts.

Duffy struck out just one, walked two and gave up eight hits.

It all happened in just two innings.

In the fourth and fifth, the Dash blasted three home runs. In the fourth, all nine men batted against Duffy and six straight men reached base. Morel drove in three with a home run to left-center and Christian Marrero followed with a solo shot to right-center. Duffy would strand men at the corners thereafter, but gave up another homer to Morel on a first-pitch swing in the fifth. The two-out blow drove in another pair of tallies for a 6-1 deficit the Blue Rocks could not overcome.

No matter that Duffy led 1-0 after three innings having allowed just two singles. In the fourth two singles preceded Morel’s first blast, then Marrero solo’d, then a single and a walk put two runners on before Duffy retired the side on a fly ball and a strike out.

Lompoc Police Beat Girls with Bats -- -- and Pitching !

SOFTBALL
The LPD team's easy 7-2 win [STORY] over the Cabrillo varsity softball squad in Saturday's 'Relay for Life' fundraiser reminded me of two statements. The first was from a discussion with Lompoc HS baseball coaching legend Dan Bodary. He stated that he would rather have a pitcher with a good change-up than one with a good curve. Obviously, the girls had more trouble adjusting to the slow-pitch game than the guys did in dealing with fast-pitch. Department Chief Tim Dabney scattered 4 hits over 6 shutout innings, and ex-pro Scott Morgan was 4-4 (double, triple) with 3 RBI's. David Lamar had 3 hits, and 3 others each had 2 hits against an expanding defense.

Adriana Segura took the loss for the girls. Cabrillo generated their only offense in the 7th when Shelby Kuhlman tripled (ahem) home Colby Erdman, then scored on a wild pitch by reliever Eric Nesby.

The second thing ? That would be the old Greco-Roman Proverb (as translated) -- "In the end, Old Age and Treachery will defeat Youth and Vigor". Chalk one up for the old guys !!

Frank Piemme. The remarkable octogenarian, and International Swimming Hall of Fame inductee, stopped by the pool to watch Jacob Piemme swim for the Braves. How good is he ? Well, he has held over 60 U.S. National Records.

Elicity Fabing's three-run triple highlighted an eight-run third inning as the Braves finished off the Pirates in six innings because of the 10-run rule. Jeana Carrillo and reliever Jasmine Taylor each threw 3 innings, combining on a three hitter.
Lompoc catcher Lauren Lopes (2-4, RBI), starter Jeana Carrillo (2 RBI), and Monica Tuomi (RBI) keyed the offense.

The Knights didn't nee the help, but the Saints gave it to them anyway - five unearned runs with two out in the first inning. It was all St Joe from there. Jackie Rodriguez had two of the Knights 4 doubles. Caitlin Voss (3 hits, 2 RBI), Ashley Ramirez (3 hits, 2 RBI), Mariah Cochiolo (3 hits, 3 RBI), Melissa Amaro (2 hits -double), and Shayli Swaim (2 hits) all had big days at the plate.

"Dauer Power" is alive and well. Kim Dauer struck out 17 batters versus just one hit for Morro Bay. Templeton's Jane Hunt also pitched well, throwing a complete game 3-hitter, with Ciara Ramos accounting for two of the three.

JV Softball [Tuesday]

According to coach John Carrillo, Tuesday's Lompoc - Cabrillo JV Game was "a real nail-biter". Lompoc Head Coach Todd Wold agreed --

Yesterday was a pitching duel and a nailbiter between the Lompoc Braves and the Cabrillo Conquistadors JV softball teams. Lompoc started six freshman, including their entire outfield, 3rd basewoman, catcher, and pitcher.

With Jasmine Taylor, Lompoc's freshman pitcher and leading hitter (.918 in league), getting pulled up to varsity to pitch versus Santa Ynez as a result of her no hitter last week, Lompoc threw another freshman, Katie Berryman, versus the Conqs. What most thought would be a hitter's game turned out to be a pitching duel. Both pitchers threw a 2 hitter.

Both of the Conq's hits come in the 6th, a bloop single over first base, then a shot to left field by their former varsity catcher and cleanup hitter, to drive in their one and only run in the top of the sixth. In the bottom of the seventh, Katie Berryman attempted to help her own cause by hitting a triple with one out. Marissa Brady laid down a near-perfect bunt down first that was teatering on the line but called foul. Then with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Cera Mitchell hit a shot back at the pitcher, ending the game.

Both teams went down as winners and I am sure are ready for another duel in league later in the season. The Braves and the Conq's both recieved outstanding pitching from their freshmen, indicating a continued rivalry worthy of the Lompoc Valley for years to come. "I have never been more proud of a team, we have one of the most talented teams top to bottom on the central coast! Other teams have a few great players, but we have a great team.

The Braves received points from every singles player. Kyle Thumm won two sets, including an important 7-5 victory over Ellias Murillo in the match-up of #1's that helped Lompoc to a 5-1 first round. Robert Rodriguez fell to Murrilo but managed two 6-0 wins, and Juan Morales also had a 6-0 win. The Braves top two doubles pairs, Alex Jensen / Joel Martin and Cooper Barrick / Oscar Rodriguez, each swept three sets.

St. Joseph avenged its first round loss to Templeton by winning handily on the Knights’ courts evening the season series between the two teams.

Jake Eszes swept three singles sets for the Knights and the Eagles Jeff Eisemann went 2-1 winning 6-1 and 6-0.

The Knights won seven of nine doubles sets - Hayes Dunn / Jacob Goeres swept three sets, while the Eagles Ben Rubin / Sam Rubin took both Templeton points in tie-breakers [7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-1)].

Cuts Claim Casualty

The sports budget cuts in the LUSD have claimed a major casualty - Lompoc HS Athletic Director Jesse Davis (above right). "I just can't do the job the way they have re-structured it.", he explained after confirming his departure. The position this fall will be a teacher/AD combination, with the AD also having 3-4 instruction periods during the school day. Davis claimed he is 'simply not organised enough' to deal with the classroom periods, the administrative workload, the evening/nighttime AD requirements, and the need for lesson preparation the night before classes - especially since both secretaries in the Activities/Athletics Office have been reduced to half-time.

It had been hoped that Davis, arguably the most successful coach in valley high school history while at CHS, would be a stabilizing force as the LHS AD following a revolving door in the post for several years after Brian Ayer was forced to resign by the cancer that ultimately took his life. He, however, leaves the job after only two years. A very effective two years, but ones which were just starting to show fruit.

The search for a replacement has reached the interview stage, but no information has been released about the candidates, except that they are all current LUSD employees. The AD post test program at that began this Cabrillo has another year to run and is not expected to be effected until 2010. That 2-year experiment converted the AD post to an administrator position now held by Bob Lawrence, who is nearing retirement age.

What will Jesse do next year ? "I'll be teaching in a classroom at some school somewhere." When asked about coaching, he replied "Well, --- I'll see what's available".

The Braves collected wins by Kyle Thumm & Robert Rodriguez in singles, while the #1 doubles duo, Alex Jensen/Joel Martin swept. Cooper Barrick & Oscar Rodriguez collected the other Lompoc point. Coach Loretta Jensen was pleased with the team's effort, noting that the two matches against upper division schools coming out of the Spring break were excellent tune-ups before diving back into LPL play.

The Pirates continued ransacking the Los Padres League. Singles #1 Miles Seemann kept up his torrid pace - dropping no games in his two sets, and Cutis Cole / Austin White [the #1 doubles tandem] lost just 3 games while sweeping three sets. The Conqs received points from James Jeon in singles and doubles pair Arjun Ayyar - Jordan Daniels.

Duffy Cops Second Win

DUFFY MORTAL, GIVES UP HR

DANNY DUFFY picked up his second victory of the season Tuesday as his Wilmington Blue Rocks knocked off the visiting Salem Avalanche 8-3.

Duffy also made his longest outing of the year as he pitched six complete innings. He struck out seven batters and walked just one.

On the faintly downside the Lompoc lefty was touched for three earned runs so his near-spotless earned run average rose a bit to the simply-blue chip range at 2.30. He also gave up six hits including his first home run of the season.

Now over 15 and 2/3 innings Duffy has allowed four earned runs on 11 hits. His strikeout-to-walk ratio is a star-quality 19-3.

NEW YORK -- When the Mets acquired slugger Gary Sheffield during the first week of April and announced plans to put the veteran in the outfield, much was made of how Sheffield's playing time would infringe upon Ryan Church.

But if Church was initially worried he was on the hot seat, he didn't show it. And 11 games into the season, the only rise out of the Mets right fielder has been the steady climb of his batting average, up to .389 through Saturday.

"Like [manager Jerry Manuel] has always said, 'If you hit, you are going to play," Church said. "So, that's what I intend on doing. "

If April is any indication, keeping Church out of the lineup isn't an option.

In 10 starts, Church has had five multi-hit games, including a team-leading six doubles. His 14 hits are tied with Luis Castillo and Jose Reyes for tops on the team, and his seven walks trail only David Wright, who has nine.

If anything, Church looks poised to build on last season's breakthrough year, which was cut short by injuries that forced him to miss nearly half a season's worth of games.

On May 20, Church suffered a mild concussion while sliding and trying to break up a double play and ended up with two separate stints on the disabled list for post-concussion syndrome.
Prior to his injury, Church was off to an equally impressive start, hitting .319 in April with a 10-game hit streak. In 29 games in May, he hit .299 with a career-high six home runs in a single month.

Right now, Church feels 100 percent, and his goal is to stay that way for the seven-month season.

"[I] don't even worry about numbers," Church said. "Because if I'm healthy and I'm out there playing, everything will take care of itself."

In addition to the almost-daily extra practice Church takes on Citi Field's vast outfield, he is vigilant about making the proper adjustments at the plate.

Last season, he worked with Mets hitting coach Howard Johnson to keep his back foot underneath him and ensure a more balanced, confident swing. Now, Church is at the point where it's more of a "touch-and-feel thing," and he can usually tell when he's not aligned.
"Either I'll figure it out seeing it on video or [Johnson's] my second set of eyes," Church said. "And it clicks from there."

"He's a professional," Johnson said of Church's work ethic and attention to detail. "He wants to win. He wants to be as best as he can be at his position. ... And he's always been that way."
And while Church can't control what the Mets decide to do in right field, Johnson said the outfielder has his mind in the right place.

"He's very focused," Johnson said of Church's approach to the game. "He just has to maintain that and not get his mind focused on too many other things. And he's been good about that. He's very good about that, actually."

Duffy Blanks Indians, Gets First ‘W;’ Church Sits

DUFFY DOMINATES

DANNY DUFFY shut down the Kinston Indians on three hits and no runs over five innings Wednesday night to gain his first victory of the new Carolina League season.

Duffy struck out six and walked one to lower his earned run average to a near-invisible 0.93 and advance his two-game totals to 12 strikeouts vs. two bases on balls and only five hits over 9 and 2/3 innings.

But it was not all smooth sailing for the Lompoc lefty, the Kansas City Royals’ third-round draft pick two seasons ago.

The Indians put runners in scoring positions in three of Duffy’s five frames and a throw from centerfield was needed to cut down a runner at the plate in the second inning. Duffy gave up two wild pitches and two stolen bases but retired nine of the last 10 batters to face him.

Duffy’s Wilmington club is now 4-3. Duffy, still only 20 years old, leads the Blue Rock starting pitchers in innings, strikeouts and ERA.

Based on Wednesday night's outing, a repeat of what his fans enjoyed last year at lower level Burlington, a promotion to the AA level seems within reason before the end of the season.

In New York RYAN CHURCH, despite batting over .400, sat and watched Wednesday night as aging Gary Sheffield played right field for the Mets. The 40-year-old slugger struck out and grounded into a double play in two at bats. Sheffield is now 0-for-4 for the season.

Lompoc Braves Windstorm; Reigns Over Cats & Dogs

Lompoc Catcher Lauren Lopes had two very complete games on Tuesday. Her usual excellent work behind the plate, her rifle arm, her hitting prowess, and leadership abilities were all on display.



SOFTBALL

Best of the West Tournament

The fierce winds that struck throughout the region were certainly in evidence at the Hagerman Softball Complex in Santa Maria during the Righetti HS Best of the West Tournament on Tuesday. That didn't stop Lompoc - they beat Atascadero 8-5 and Paso Robles 4-3 to advance to the Consolation Final on Wednesday at 1 pm..

Behind strong pitching performances by Jeana Carrillo, with some relief from Paty Martinez, Lompoc shut out the opposition in the 1st 3 innings of both contests. The Braves also received some clutch hitting, led by Lauren Lopes, to post 4-run innings in both games.

Game 3:
Lompoc were the 'visitors' in this one, and the Braves struck early. After two outs, 1B Dana Campitelli hit a sharp grounder to 2B where the ball hopped,and ricocheted off the players leg over behind second base. Dana beat out the throw, and a walk put runners on 1st & 2nd. A Catrina Chill flyball brought home a run. The ball dropped in between the shortstop & an outfielder and creative base-running combined with less-than-accurate throws. In the bottom half of the inning, Carrillo made short work of the Greyhounds - striking out the first two she faced, allowed a single, then forced a grounder to short.

Martinez led off the next session with a walk. Hillary Davis bunted, and a throwing error put runners on the corners. Jherriann Lopez walked to load the bases, and Mariah La Shore's deep fly to center scored Martinez. Following a strikeout, Lopes strode to the plate - 2 on, 2 out. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position, and Lauren launched one of "Lopes Lasers" deep for a 2-run triple. She scored when a pop-up to 3rd was dropped, and the runner was safe at first base.

The Braves added another run in the third, an two in the fourth. La Shore collected an RBI with her grounder in number three after the bases were loaded (walk, single - Davis, error). Davis led off the fourth with a triple and Carrillo singled her home. Then another a fly ball - a collision between players, a drop, and base-running adventures allowed another run. Martinez single put runners on 1st & 3rd, but Lompoc would not score again. Courtesy Runner Betty Sullivan, had a stolen base and run scored.

Carrillo meantime had shaken off some trouble in the 2nd (2 singles & a walk to load the bases with 1 out) by inducing a shallow fly ball and a routine grounder to short. The only batter to reach base in the next nine she faced did so via an error on a ground ball. That runner, in the 3rd, stole second, but was mowed down when she tried to steal 3rd base. Lopes throw and Monica Tuomi's tag nailed her. In that span Carrillo struck out 5 , including 4 in a row, the last two of the fourth and the 1st two of the fifth.

Then things went a bit haywire - 5 consecutive hits. Four singles sandwiched around a 2-run triple, with the 3rd single bringing home another run. Martinez pitched the 6th, giving up 2 more runs on a walk, an error, and a double to left. The game was called after six innings due to time limits.



It was definitely NOT summer conditions at the ballpark.


Game 4: A Tale of two half-innings. Lompoc vs Paso Robles (6-4 winners over Pioneer Valley).

Jeana Carillo was in the circle again for this one, an error allowed the leadoff batter to reach safely, but Jeana quickly retired the next three on a strikeout and two ground balls. Another error in the second also put a runner on base, but she struck-out two batters to end the inning. The third was 3 up, 3 down.

The Bearcats CF, Lauren Redberg, started it off in the fourth with a leadoff single. That was followed by a bunt sacrifice, a fielder's choice, and a stolen base which had runners at 2nd & 3rd. A ground ball led to out number two, without the runners advancing, but a walk loaded the bases. A wild pitch brought one run in, and a single brought in two more, but the batter was erased at third on a nice throw from Lopes. She was trying to stretch the advantage after reaching second on the fielder's choice throw to the plate.

Meanwhile the Braves were getting nowhere with Paso pitcher Alexa Munoz, sending only 13 batters to the plate in their first four innings. They had 2 baserunners, both on walks -and one of them was cut down attempting to steal second. Paty Martinez finally got a hit to lead off the fifth. Lopez's bunt attempt resulted in a out at 1st and a wide throw at second moved her to third. A sacrifice fly by Stephanie Baca to deep left field got the Braves on the scoreboard. Then the parade began - Shandee Berryman, Tawny Nunes, and Elicity Fabing all singled to the left side of the infield to load the bases. Lopes came to the plate and hit a ball that the shortstop threw wide of the bag at 1st and two runs scored. Campitelli's single then plated one more.

Martinez replaced Carrillo at the top of the fourth, and allowed a single, and a balk, but she also recorded a strikeout and got out of the inning without damage. Her problems were in the fifth. Alexa Munoz laced a shot to left field that Melissa Morrison's throw held to a double. Unfortunately, a wild pitch moved her to third. A walk then put the winning run on base. Back in came Carrillo, but with the tying run on 3rd Lompoc couldn't prevent Megan Donovan from taking second. A ground ball followed, with the runners unable to advance, but Carrillo walked the next batter to load the bases. She atoned for that glitch, however, by fanning the last two batters of the inning on 7 pitches.

There were two Paso singles in the seventh, compounded by a Lompoc error that again loaded the bases. But Carrillo pounced on a weak come-backer, flipped to Lopes at the plate, who rifled the ball to Campitelli at first for the rare 1-2-3 double play to end the game.

Church hits double-double -- AGAIN !! ** Update**

continues to rip up Major League pitching. In Saturday night's 8-4 victory vs. the Marlins he was 2-4 with a walk and a run scored. Oh, and hits were both DOUBLES !! The second time he has doubled twice in the same game this week. Clearly, in MLB Week #1 he has the best numbers of any right-fielder in the National League. How hot is he ? His effort against Florida actually lowered his batting average from .533 to .526.

On Sunday, the Mets wasted a fine Johan Santana performance. Ryan Church had one of the teams five hits - A DOUBLE. His 6th two-bagger in as many games.

has departed extended spring training and landed at Lakeland, Florida. The Lakeland Flying Tigers are the Tigers Advanced-A affiliate. It is a rather appropriate stop, since the 14th Air Force - the organisational descendant of the WW II Flying Tigers, is Headquartered at Vandenberg AFB. He was due to join the team Friday night, but apparently has not yet seen any action.

Ryan Bower led the Braves with the bat. He was 2-2 (double), walk, 2 RBI, run scored. Rouleau chipped in a hit, a run, and an RBI.

Oxnard — Austin Davidson hit a three-run homer, singled, and scored twice. Juan Reveles had two hits, scored a run and stole a base. Alex Solis (4-0) allowed three earned runs in four innings. Blake Adame earned the save, striking out four and not allowing a hit.

Duffy Impresses in CL Debut; Church Ablaze

Duffy Labors Early

DANNY DUFFY made his first start in the Advanced-A Carolina League an impressive one Friday night at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Duffy, the sixth-ranked prospect in the Kansas City Royals system according to Baseball America, allowed one run, two hits and one walk over 4.2 innings, striking out six. He retired the last dozen batters he faced, striking out the last four in a row.

Duffy settled down nicely after a labored first frame. The southpaw endured three different full-counts while facing six batters in that inning, which included a two-out RBI single which gave Myrtle Beach a 1-0 lead. But with two men on base, Duffy induced a groundout to second to end the inning. No Pelican would reach base against Duffy again on the night. Duffy was left on the hook for the 3-1 loss, but a single score in the seventh by his Wilmington Blue Rocks helped him off of it.

MAJOR LEAGUES

The bat of RYAN CHURCH continued en fuego in Miami as the rightfielder went 3-for-4 to raise his early season batting average to a spectacular .533, tops on the club for the New York Mets. His rival for the rightfield starting job, well-travelled (40-year-old) home run hitter Gary Sheffield mostly watched other than making a brief appearance to accept an intential walk in a pinch hitting role. The slugger's planned start on Sunday, presumably in place of Church, has been delayed, the club announced.

The Braves were short a doubles squad, forfeiting 3 points, they were 8-7 in contested matches.

The Braves bats were busy in this one. Jeremy Friend tripled; Dalton Rouleau, Daniel Mallory, and Richie Hirzel all doubled. Cody Berryman picked up the win in the 2-hit, 11 strike-out shutout, and helped himself by getting Lompoc going with a two-run blast in the 2nd.

Another Conq comeback came up short. Cabrillo trailed 6-1 after two, and 7-1 at the end of six, but scored 5 in the seventh to fall 1 run short of the Pirates. Brian Engler took the loss, while Matt Hartin had two homers for St Joes - but also almost gave the away when he relieved in the final stanza.

Jacob Peterson, collected the win, doubled twice, and singled in the winning run for the Pirates.

Chris Mallory [LHS] had 3 of the Bulldogs' (18-16) 8 hits, but the Cougars (22-10) tallied 16 hits. The big blow being a 3-run homer in the fourth.

Kim Dauer took a breather after fanning 5 in 2 scoreless innings, and Morgan Burkhart struck-out 6 more in relief. Dauer's battery mate Claire Hoose was 3-4 (2 RBI), and Jasmine Singh went 2-3 (2 RBI).

Lompoc's Jeana Carrillo (7-2, 4-0) refuses to let Dauer run off with LPL MVP honors, as the Braves kept pace with Morro Bay atop the league standings. She pitched a complete game 3-hitter, and was 3-4 (RBI) at the plate. Other Braves helping out included Catrina Chill 2-2 (RBI), Lauren Lopes (solo shot in 5th), Shandee Berryman (double), and Hilary Davis (double).

The Bulldogs dropped both games of a double-header to reach 6 losses in a row. AHC has hit the ball fairly well, and both Elysha McLain & Leanna Corral have each hit well and consistantly, the teams pitching has been seriously deficient.

The Braves won on sets, but the total games was 85-84. The difference in this nail-biter was the four extra-game sets, in cluding 2 tie-breakers - all won by Lompoc. There were no shutout sets by either squad. Cooper Barrick / Joel Martin swept in doubles.

Cabrillo was 1-8 in shut-out (6-0) sets, including sweeps by singles players Jake Eszes and Hayes Dunn.
