Creatures from the Blue Lagoons
Boys Water Polo
at the COLAC
Varsity [Story]
Cabrillo 15, Lompoc 10
Kevin Hicks had his kids ready to go, and it was one of the better match-ups in recent pool contests between the two local schools, but Cabriilo still came out on top. How close was it ? Except for 35 seconds in the 3rd quarter, neither team led by more than two goals until late in the 4th period.
Cabrillo took an early 2 point lead on goals by Jake Motyer & Marcus Thiele, but the Braves retaliated with 2 of their own by Taylor Emery. Those goals, however, were sandwiched around the conqs 3rd score - a goal by Emmett Hill.
Motyer opened the 2nd quarter scoring on a really nice touch shot of a cross-pool pass, pushing the Conqs advantage to 4-2. But Lompoc evened the score with consecutive goals by Daniel Dunaetz - the second on the rebound of a missed 5-meter penalty shot. Goals from Tyler Chard & Motyer gave Cabrillo back its 2 point margin, but a goal from Robert Macias and Emery's third score tied the match at 6 all at the half.
It was a very busy 3rd period, with a frenetic last minute. Shae Kakos (CHS) and Emery each scored goals to keep things tied at 7 apiece, then Chard popped in his second, and Tyler Thompson scored his 1st to put the Conqs up 9-7. When Hill scored again with 56 seconds left it looked like Cabrillo might finish the period up three, but Dunaetz hit his 3rd goal with 40 ticks left on the clock to pull the differential back to two. But we're not done. Tyler Chard (0:30) gave Cabrillo its second 3-goal advantage, but it lasted only 19 seconds as Robert Macias scored again with only 11 seconds remaining in the quarter.
Emmett Hill scored his 3rd & 4th goals of the game to start the 4th period. The second came with 3:05 left, after Cabrillo Head Coach Joel Jory picked up a yellow card for disputing a call in what was a quite physical first 5 minutes. That goal put the Conqs up 13-9, but was answered just 8 seconds later by Michael Ostrander. That would be the Braves last hurrah, however, as Motyer and Kakos each scored in the final 2:30 to give Cabrillo a 15-10 victory.
Goals:
Cabrillo - Jake Motyer 4, Emmett Hill 4, Tyler Chard 3, Shae Kakos 2, Marcus Thiele, Tyler Thompson. Cabrillo scored 6 goals with a man advantge.
Lompoc - Taylor Emery 4, Daniel Dunaetz 3, Robert Macias 2, Michael Ostrander
Junior Varsity
Cabrillo 9, Lompoc 4
This was a tale of two halves, Jeff Dacos's charges dominated early - while Lompoc controlled the second half. The Conq used goals by Adrian Favela, Kyle Lopez (on a 5M Penalty), Simon Reep, and Jake Wiley to finish the 1st period up 4-0. They added 3 more in the second, as Gavin Kilcoyne, Kieren Carroll, and Wiley all scored without a response from the Braves.
In the second half the Braves seemed to figuere out that they could play with the Conqs and it was a much different game. Marc Saucedo-Julian scored twice, and Miles Holmlund & Tyler Townsend each scored once as Lompoc outscored Cabrillo 4-2. Nate Chandler scored both Conq second half points.
According to Lompoc coach Casey Brooks, it was only "the second game ever" for most of his crew, including exchange students Gabriel Belizano (Brazil) and Xi Ping Li ['Eddie'] (China). The Braves had an earlier 10-6 loss to Paso Robles.
David Barber had a number of nice stops in goal for the Braves.

Cabrillo Games
at Cabrillo Gymnasium
Cabrillo 3, Templeton [5-4, 1-2 LPL] 0 [Story]
[25-21, 26-24, 25-23]
After a match Monday night that they allowed to slip away, a determined group of Conquistador players simply refused to to die on Tuesday. They had plenty of opportunities, quickly falling behind in all three games, before rallying for the wins.
On Monday [See more below], facing a tough Righetti squad on the road, they won the first two games, and according to some observers got a little complacent. They paid for that hubris as the Warriors came back to take three straight games and the match. Against Templeton the Conqs would have none of that - there were bodies flying around the court and into the stands, incredible digs, great serves, massive kills, and often, just when they needed it most - one more play than the Eagles.
Game #1
Cabrillo took the first point, then surrendered a 3-1 lead, fought back to ties at 4, 9, & 11 without retaking lead. When they did briefly edge ahead, Templeton fought back to a 14 all tie, but Cabrillo eked out a two point advantage. Then with the visitors serving at 16-18, the Conqs slowly began to make the plays they needed. Summer Galvin's stuff block put the ball in the hands of Libero Colby Edman, whose ace put Cabrillo up 20-16.
A game group of Eagles pulled it back to 20-20. Kaylee Long pounded down a kill, Kelly O'Connell served an ace, followed soon after by a Tiffany Lee kill and a Jenna Hilliard ace to give the locals game point at 24-21. On the ensuing serve, Cabrillo blocked an attempted tip shot, but it would not matter because Templeton was into the net. Conqs take the opener 25-21.
Game #2
In this one they spotted the Eagles an even bigger lead 8-1, then started to creep back into a game many thought was a prelude to a 5-setter. They cut the margin to 3 (9-12), but Templeton pushed it up to 7 (17-10). Cabrillo closed the gap and was serving down a point (19-20) when a serve that should have been an ace, was called out.
A sneaky tip shot gave the Conqs the ball back, and they evened the score at 21. The second Eagle timeout of the game led to a Devon Kennedy kill that put the visitors up, but Jenna Hilliard slammed down a kill to knot the score and get the ball back. Cabrillo served long, the Eagles served short, and Cabrillo served wide to give Templeton a game point at 24-23. Cabrillo won the rally to tie it, and with Hilliard serving induced Templeton into a double hit call - setting up a game point of their own. They converted it on a Tiffany Lee slam.
Game #3
Cabrillo lost the initial point, but actually led briefly until a 5-5 tie. The Eagles then went up 9-5, before the Conqs forced 9-9 & 10-10 ties. A wide serve by the visitors put Cabrillo up a point and Kelly O'Connell at the line. The two points that followed were classic, bodies everywhere on both sides, hits, blocks, miraculous digs - and Cabrillo won them both to take a 3 point lead. They expanded the lead to 4, but the Eagles contracted it to a single point (17-16).
A Long kill, and a Chloe Huggins tip-in after a Kiley Aldridge serve moved the score to 19-16. The crowd started thinking the match was done, but the Eagles weren't done yet. A sideout, a net serve, a carry call, and an ace led to a Templeton time-out with the score 22-18. Game over ? Not quite. A Humpfries kill put sophmore Alyssa Price behind the service line, and she delivered 6 consecutive serves. Fortunately #6 was long & the Conqs got the seve again with the game at 23-23. A Kalee Long tip-in, and a Eagle return into the net sealed the win and saved the rest of the spectators fingernails.
The total points in the contest was 76-68 in favor of Cabrillo. Assistant Coach Jim Hilliard, filling in for Sue Slavins who is still out sick, credited the win to "Everybody on the the court, and the band" while Assistant Jennifer Smith was almost giddy about the "great mentality and defense". And the "D" was excellent throughout the night - keyed by Jessica Rucinski, Aldridge, Long, Hilliard, and Kristina Goodchild.
Understandably, Eagles coach Jody Kelly was not quite so thrilled. She didn't think her squad played up to its capabilities, and said "We didn't play our game, we let Cabrillo set the tempo. We've got lots of talent on this team - we just need to find the right dynamic."
Conq Stat Leaders: Kills (26) - Chloe Huggins 10, Kaylee Long 5, Tiffany Lee 4 . Assists - Jenna Hilliard 15. Digs - Kaylee Long 13, Kristina Goodchild 11.

Templeton: Kiersten Humphries 8 kills.

[25-16, 25-22]
Smith's usual charges also got off to a slow start, and were trailing 4-3 when Caitlyn Harvey-Morgan {CHM} stepped to the service line. The result - 5, count 'em, FIVE aces in a row !! Felicia Bowen & Lauren Pluim took over at the net, and Bowen & Kaitlyn Ogan helping out with the serve. Stephanie Miyamoto then had a nice service run (6) with an ace and a CHM kill. Rhiannon Saxe contributed some quality defensive work, and, although Templeton hung around for a while, that was pretty much it. Appropriately, two Bowen kills and a CHM ace closed out game #1.
Despite the defensive efforts of Libero Kayla Lown, Game #2 saw the Conqs fall behind 2-5, 4-11, 7-14, 11-15, & 14-18. Then came a timeout, a Harvey-Morgan kill and Miyamoto at the line, followed by CHM. Kills by Bowen and Alishsa Mellatti, some of the 'crucial digs' provided by Emily Bean & Stacy Harmon throughout the match, and the setting of Nikki Friend helped tie the game at 20 points apiece. After another tie at 21 all, Bowen stepped up to serve and collected four points in a row, aided by a monster kill by Pluim.
Harvey-Morgan: 8 aces. Bowen: 4 aces, 7 (of the teams 15) kills. Friend: 15 assists.
Templeton Frosh 2, Cabrillo Frosh 0
[25-8, 25-22]
The game started at 4:30, Cabrillo started about 15 minutes later. The spotted the Eagles 6 points and then were quickly down 17-3. Following a timeout they played better, being outscored 8-5 down the stretch. Game two was better, even though they fell behind 3-0, and 3-7 before rallying. They tied the score at 8 & 10, gave up a long serving run to Melissa Rylee, and fell four back. There was some back-and-forth, but the margin stayed about 4-5 points the rest of the way.

No One Circles the Lagoon Like the Cabrillo Conquistadors
Cross-Country
UCSB Lagoon Run
Cabrillo / Lompoc [Both Boys & Girls]
In the past, the organizers usually just awarded medals to the age group winners, and that was all. This year, however meet director Leslie Wiggins-Roth concocted a team competition with the top 9 runners from each squad scoring points.
Boys
The participating teams were mostly from the south coast & Ventura County, but on the boys side they were smacked around by the Conqs. Cabrillo posted an 88 to run away (literally) from Ventura (145) and Dos Pueblos (254). DP's Sergey Sushchich [15:48] finished 1st, followed by Tackett & Petree of Ventura. Then it was all Cabrillo, as they pack ran, and put 11 runners in the top 20 to easily grab the crown.
Individual Scores (included):
Daniel Pena, 4th, 16:15; Levi Block, 5th, 16:15; Joel Velazques, 6th, 16:16; Steven Villanueva, 7th, 16:17; Jeshua Hopson, 8th, 16:18; Lazaro Nunes, 10th, 16:27; Omar Padilla, 13th, 16:41; Tyler Milstein, 17th, 17:08; Zach Trevino, 18th, 17:12; Craig Wise, 19th, 17:13; Johnny Hernandez, 20th, 17:14.
Girls
The girls race was won in 19:25 by Ventura's Hannah Kirkegaard. Lompoc's Ashley Fabing (19:43) nipped Kelly Kosmo (DP, 19:45) for second and was soon followed by the Braves Denice Hernandez (20:10) in 4th and Kaylin Barnes (21:33) in 17th.
Cabrillo girls in the top 20 were: Britni Heter (6th, 20:14), Korina Rich (8th, 20:29), and Devon Bedell (12th, 20:48).

Carpenteria Tournament
The Conq went to the south coast to take on twelve other teams at Carp. Each team was slated to play tengames (mostly round-robon) with the top 4 advancing to the 'playoffs'. Unfortunately, Cabrillo did not advance. Nordoff won the tourney, beating Gladstone in the final. The other simi-finalists were Mission Prep & St. Bonaventure.
Cabrillo JV
Note from Coach Jennifer Smith -
The team won the Consolation bracket in the Morro Bay Tournament this Saturday.
There were a total of 11 teams. Cabrillo was leading with 3 wins and 1 loss when the girls hit a slump and gave up the next 3 games making their record 3-4. The final 2 games were “do or die” and the girls came alive and played great Cabrillo ball; winning the next 2 games to finish 5th overall. Although, CHS only placed 5th, they were the only team to beat the 1st place team; Arroyo Grande Eagles who finished 9-1.
Caitlin Harvey-Morgan was phenomenal; everything she touched turned to gold. When she was playing the front row she was hitting so smart and hard; she was unstoppable. Her defense was more of the same, not much hit the floor when the ball came near Caitlin. In game 8, Rhiannon Saxe is credited with 20 serves in a row; the majority of them being ACES.
I’m incredibly proud of all the girls; they showed great intensity, teamwork and perseverance.

OUCH !!!! + Car Wash
Cabrillo [ See Story ] was steamrolled on the road by St. Joseph in their LPL opener. The Conqs scoring operation is still stuck on a total of 3 points, as the Knights won 45-0 while racing for 375 yards on the ground.
Lompoc [ See Story ] fell 49-6 to Dos Pueblos at Huyck Stadium. They turned the ball over three times (down from 5 two weeks ago & 4 last week), and only gained 158 yards total offense on 46 plays. The rushing game was again stiffled - 16 yards on 16 carries in the 1st half, and 34 totes for 76 yards in total. Twenty yards, on 4 attempts, of that total came on the final Braves posession.
Lompoc's sole score was a 40 yard TD throw, Bower to Morehart, on 4th & 2, with 1:51 left in the 2nd quarter to narrow the margin to 28-6.

There were some real nail-biters on the courts Thursday, and one match isn't over yet.
Varsity
Mission Prep 10, @ Cabrillo 8 (3-1, 1-0 LPL)
This was a real dandy, but the Conqs came up just short. How close was it ? Cabrillo lost 2 of the 3 tie-breaker sets, both 6-7 (5-7) losses to the Royals #1 duo - sophmore Jenna Dunbar & frosh Sophie Seid. The Conqs took a 4-2 lead in the first round, but dropped 5 of 6 in round 2. So after the second round MP was up 7-5 in sets with games tied at 60 each.
Doubles
Dunbar & Seid also took a 3rd set 6-0, but CHS won 5 of the other 6 sets in the pairs. Elke Peirtsegaele and her sister Nikki won 2 sets (6-1, 6-4), as did Bree Piper-Williams / Ashley Bowman (6-3, 6-4), with Alena Taber / Andriana Siefe taking a 6-3 decision over the MP #3's.
Singles
Singles was a bit rougher road. Ashley Pennewell topped Rachel Ronca 6-2 for a point, and #2 Julie Leyva added the two remaining wins - 7-6 (7-2) over Helena Olivieri and 6-2 over Ally Kersthold.
Lompoc 9 [80] (0-2-1, 0-1-1), @ Morro Bay 9 [80]
The Braves traveled up to "Rock City" and came away with an Incomplete. Through 18 sets & 160 games the teams were even, so CIF requires that they play a round-robin tiebreaker with the 1's versus 1's , etc. . No date has yet been set, but will likely occur next week.
Lompoc scored most of their points in doubles (6-3) with the Pirates scoring in the singles (6-3). Each Lompoc duo scored points - Jessica Cosio / Ashley Branson swept three sets. Korina Esqueda / Azucena Villalobos took two. Megan Hansen swept in singles, and Kirra Meisinger / Jasmissa Yasay accounted for 2 of the Bay's 3 doubles points.
St. Joseph 17, Templeton 1
The Knights (2-0, 4-2) were almost as hot as the 105 degrees temperatures in Templeton. Sweeping for St. Joseph were #1 singles Frankie Eszes, (18-1 in games), and all three doubles pairs - Sammy White / Ellie McPike, Whitney Bouque / Christine Noe, and Paige Jaeckels / Brittany Chartier.
Santa Ynez (5-2 overall) 15, Santa Maria (0-2, 0-4) 3
The Pirates rolled at home as most of the 'starters' only got in a couple of sets. Among those that swept their two chances were singles Alisa Silsbee and Michelle Sackie and pairs Sophie Brandstatter / Sydney Tack, Bianca Cappaso / Kylie Petersen, and Mylee Curtis / Heather Vellekamp. Lupe Garcia won a couple of sets for the Saints.
Tuesday:
Templeton @ Cabrillo
Lompoc @ Santa Ynez
Junior Varsity
Lompoc 9 (77), Morro Bay (70)
This was more about evenly balanced squads than real close sets -although there were some of those too. The Pirates won the singles 5-4 and the Braves took the doubles 5-4.
Singles : 4-5 [32-36]
The difference maker for the Braves was singles #1 Cera Mitchell. She went 3-0 (6-1, 6-0, 6-1), while allowing only 2 games to the Pirates, accounting for 1/3 of the Lompoc points and a plus 16 record in games. Diep Chang posted a 6-4 win in round one for the other tally.
Doubles : 5-4 [45-34]
Those close ones were here - two 5-7 Lompoc losses to Bay #1's Heather Montgomery / Jessica Wagner. The Braves top pair, Karin Martin / Amargiete Larios, bounced back from the 1st round loss to win two sets (6-1, 6-3). Catalina Perez / Sarah Carillo sandwiched 6-1 victories around their 5-7 loss, and Janett Ruiz / Isela Caudillo collected the remaining Lompoc point.
Cabrillo did not have a JV match because Mission Prep's JV was playing Orcutt Academy.

For Morro Bay: Ciara Ramos - 9 kills, Gabby Wenker - 8 kills, and Kaylie Gacad - 22 assists.

Arroyo Grande 16, Cabrillo 8
Arroyo Grande zoomed to 7-1 first quarter lead and spent the rest of the match working on set plays, defensive set-ups and player combinations, while coasting to a 16-8 triumph. The Eagles scored three goals in the first four minutes, two by Kevin Meffert who scored three of his five goals in the first.
Luca Vukamonovic & Ryan Higginbotham each scored three , Eric Marsh hit the back of the net twice and the Eagles also received goals from Casey Higginbotham, Adam Stevens and Dennis Meffert. Tyler Chard's three goals led the Conqs, with Emmett Hill (2), Jake Moyter (2), Tyler Thompson (1) each contributing goals.
Arroyo Grande used a swarming defense to generate counter-attacks and completely smother the Conq 2-meter, and a passing offense that consistantly found the open man - frequently in open water near the goal.
Although in a number of respects the game was not competitive, both coaches got what they wanted. Arroyo Grande coach Steve Allen acknowledged that AG was 'bigger, stronger, faster, better swimmers, and more siuationally aware' than the Conqs was happy to get some actual game time for his crew. They have a lot of practice time, because they train year round, but most of his charges did not get much playing time last year.
Cabrillo's Joel Jory likes to throw his teams in the pool against tough upper division opponents, to get them accostomed to a faster-paced, more physical brand of polo.
The Conqs play at Oxnard on Tuesday before kicking off Los Padres League play against Lompoc next Wednesday.
Junior Varsity
Arroyo Grande 13, Cabrillo 2
Much like the varsity contest, this one was over early. The Eagles scored the first 7 goals en route to an 8-1 halftime advantage, and a 13-2 final. Iann Dunn and Ciscoo Bass each scored 2 in the initail period and 3 overall. Griffin Chanley also had 3 goals, Tim Compton had 2, and four players had 1 apiece. The Conqs goals were scored by Chris Naughton and Kieran Carroll.
The score could have been worse, but Goalie Brian Walterich had a very good 2nd half - stopping a number of high quality shots, including several at almost point-blank range.
Rio Mesa 15, Santa Ynez 2
The Spartans controlled the match, holding the Pirates to just two Adam Parlato fourth quarter goals. William Mann had five savess between the pipes.
Football
Freshman
Lompoc 41, Dos Pueblos 14
Coming into the day this was the only local HS team with a win. They doubled up on Thursday.
Defensive turnovers, an Anthony Gonzales interception and a Niko Hayes score on a fumble recovery, helped keep the Braves in the game. They led the Chargers at the half 14-7.
Lompoc's offensive got rolling in the 2nd half, with the o-line clearing holes for Levon Coleman ( 2 TD's), Niko Hayes, Kiki Andrews and Taylor Cornejo.
St. Joseph 14, Cabrillo 0
The Conqs dropped their LPL opener at home. They stayed close, but never could get on the scoreboard. A problem they have had all season - 3 games & 15 points.

Black / Blue times Two
It was Lompoc / Cabrillo day one of the 2009-2010 season, with 5 competitions in two different sports. The results were lop-sided with the Conquistadors winning all 5 contests, but the Braves did better than many expected. All in all, it was also a pretty good day for Belgium.
Above: Lompoc Librero Christina Inda is congratulated by JV Coach Ramona Rogers after she completed singing the National Anthem to start the festivities.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
The Conqs won at all three levels, but it wasn't easy. Cabrillo has demonstrated early on in the season that they are contending for a playoff berth, and the Braves have shown that the work done over the last 3 years is beginning to reach fruition. Lompoc can compete with just about any team in the area.
Coach Aaron Batula tries to find a line-up that can beat the Conqs.
The diminutive (Listed at 5-2. Really ?)Inda would love to pursue singing, the stage, and/or volleyball after leaving LHS, but she plans to become a nurse.
Varsity
Cabrillo 3, Lompoc 0 [25-18, 25-16, 25-20]Sue Slavins absence due to illness handed the hot potato to assistant Jim Hilliard. What hot potato ? The job of dealing with a much improved Lompoc volleyball unit.
Hilliard delivered a impassioned speech to the team during a timeout with the score 10-8 in game one. But the Braves were still hanging tough , down 13-11, when the Cabrillo serve took them out. Kaylee Long started it off with 3 unreturnables and a Jessica Rucinski kill. Then another kill by Tiffany Lee, and 3 more aces by Cathy Lynes, gave the visitors a 20-13 lead that they turned into a 25-18 final score.
Long had 3 additional aces and a kill of her own to expand a two point (14-12) lead to six, and blow open game #2. Kady DeTemple had a 4 serve string aided by two Jenna Hilliard stuffs, and Kiley Adridge had 3 consecutive serves to end the game.
Game 3 looked like it might be a blowout -it wasn't. With Hilliard behind the line, the Conqs raced out to a 6-0 lead. The Braves battled back. Not scoring in bunches, but steadily picking up points until they trailed only 20-18. It went back-and-forth for a while longer, then with Cabrillo 23-20, Cloe Huggins pounded down one of her many kills and a service ace to win the match.
Chloe Huggins receiving a 'high-five' from the Record's Brad Memberto after a post-game interview.
Kelly O'Connell kept contributing key plays (digs, kills, etc.) throughout the match. Libero Colby Edman was solid defensively and also helped the serve squads dominance. She had one of the game-turning plays when her serve just nicked the line to put Cabrillo up 22-18 in game 3.
The Braves had something not often seen on Bryan Ayer Court in recent times - a truly strong, athletic, and relatively tall front line. Brandy Machado & Erica Slikker have stepped it up this year and are joined by the newly acquired 6-1 shot blocker Helene Edelberg (above with Casey Stumpo). They were able to score points at times almost solely by intimidation, which helped give confidence to the entire team.
Coach Hilliard credited the win to "Long's serving, Chloe's hitting, and great team defense." All true. The Conqs got excellent hitting from several players and their defense was great. But so did, and so were, the Braves. Lompoc played well as a team, but the difference was that they never could quite overcome the Conqs serving prowess.
Junior Varsity
The Cabrillo JV won in two, 25-10 and 25-14. The Braves put together a few serving streaks, but not enough of them. Kayla Lown recorded 4 aces for the Conqs and Felicia Bowen posted 4 kills for the match.
Frosh
The Cabrillo squad downed the Braves in straight games 25-12, 25-13.
GIRLS TENNIS
The Netters got things started at 3 pm with the varsity girls playing at Lompoc's Dave Bickmore Courts, while the JV squads were up on the hill.
Varsity
Cabrillo 15, Lompoc 3
Cabrillo was 7-2 in singles, 8-1 in doubles as the somewhat more experienced Conqs thumped a very green Lompoc contingent.
Singles
Veterans Ashley Pennewell (6-0,6-0,6-1) and Julie Leyva (6-3,6-1,6-0) swept and Kaitlyn Phillips picked up a point (6-1) over Emily Tremblay. Sameeha Husayn (6-0) and Nicole Nomany (6-3) each won a set for the Braves.
Doubles
Sisters Nikki & Elke Peirtsegaele (left) swept (6-1,6-0,6-1), as did Bree Piper-Williams & Ashley Bowman (6-2,6-2,6-3). The Conqs #3 Duo, Andrianna Siefe & Alana Taber, lost (6-1) to the Braves #1's Azucena Villalobos & Korina Esqueda, but won their first set ( 6-0) over Julie Abrego & Rosa Carreno and their closer in a tight 6-4 set versus the #2's Jessica Cosio & Ashley Branson. Gold Vang & Elena Bastianelli replaced Abrego / Carreno as the Lompoc #3's in the second & third rounds.
Junior Varsity
Cabrillo 17, Lompoc 1
As green as the Braves Varsity is, the JV are even greener - and it showed. The Conqs rolled to five sweeps, with only sophomore Cera Mitchell grabbing a point (6-4) for Lompoc at #1 singles.
Singles
Cabrillo: #1- Julie 'Noah' de Vonage 6-1, 6-0, 6-0; #2- Alex Siefe 6-1, 6-0, 6-1; #3- Kaylin Rentschler 4-6, 6-1, 6-0. Besides Mitchell, the Braves were represented by newcomers Diep Chang and Sarah Castillo.
Doubles
The scorekeepers had trouble staying up with this one - Lompoc used 9 players and Cabrillo use 12. However, all 9 substitutions came in the 3rd round. The starting 6 for CHS were Lauren Dalton / Eloisa Castilla (6-2, 6-1), Kim Smith / Ashley Trolio (6-4, 6-3), and Sam Warner / Kelsey Atkin (6-0, 6-1). In the final round they were replaced by Blayke Long / Prescilla Tran (6-1), Krystal Delos Reyes / Becca Robinson-Thomas (6-2), and Morgan Coffin / Morgan Williams respectively. The multiple Morgans won the best set of the day a 7-6 [13-11] tiebreaker over Karin Martin / Miriam Lopez - the Braves #2 pair.
At #1 for the Braves were Catalina Perez / Janett Ruiz for the initial rounds, with Maribel Martinez replacing Ruiz in round 3. Isela Caudillo / Jennifer Magana also played two sets, before letting Melanie Esparza / Naomi Guevara take a whack at #3 doubles.
. . . . Oh, about Belgium. The Peirstsegaele sisters' dad is from Belgium & so is LHS exchange student and volleyball middle blocker Helene Edelberg - shown with host dad Stan.

Braves Down & Aguilar Out
Varsity
San Marcos 7, @ Lompoc 0
[Story 1] [Story 2] [Official Lompoc Stats]
The Lompoc Braves took two tough losses at Huyck Stadium on Friday night. The first was a 7-0 loss to the San Marcos Royals, and the second was a broken collarbone incurred by QB/RB/FS/PR/KR and back-up punter, Evan Aguilar. The junior, creatively listed at 5-9, 170, was injured on a 3rd period SAC that drew a facemasking penalty, but not a 1st down.
Ryan Bower, who had not played to that point due to his own injury, entered the game to replay 4th down. He lofted a pass toward the end zone pylon and Drew Sapp, but the pass sailed harmlessly out of bounds. It was one of several scoring chances the the Braves missed.
Head Coach Robin Luken summed it up with " The defense played well, only giving up that touchdown on their 1st possession, but the offense sputtered."
The Royals lone score came the first time they touched the ball, on a 9 play, 77 yard drive that took five minutes off the 1st quarter clock. It also accounted for a large chunk of the visitors 51 play, 195 yard offensive totals. Almost all their attack was on the ground, as they gained 8 yards on 1-4 passing. Actually almost all of their attack was senior RB Kyle Miller who rushed 30 times for 135 yards.
Lompoc had three major problems last week with the Pirates - 5 turnovers, 11 penalties (90 yards), and minimal offensive production. Did those deficiencies continue on Friday ?
Four turnovers (2 fumbles & 2 pics), three in the 2nd half. Turnovers with horrible timing, including a fumble inside the visitors one yardline, and a muffed punt with 1:45 left in the game. In addition, they had a field goal blocked and once turned the ball over on downs.
Tallying five penalties (40 yards) was a marked improvment, but the ones committed helped sustain several San Marcos possessions. Three of the five were facemask violations.
But the biggest disapointment so far this year has been the anemic offense, especially the lack of an effective running game - the traditional strenth of the local squad. A 33 carry for 51 yard performance at Nipomo was followed by a 28 carry, 104 yard output versus Santa Ynez, with two Michael Haynes runs (29 & 24 yards) accounting for nearly half the total.
On Friday, as part of an 42 play, 159 yard total offensive output, the Braves posted only 60 rushing yards on 27 attempts, including 9 yards (13 carries) in the second half.
Looks like there is still work to be done.

Hillmen Perhaps ?
It was impossible to get them to stand still - a very happy Cabrillo JV volleyball squad that had knocked off a very good Paso Robles team for the first time in Head Coach Jennifer Smith's (back) tenure.
Thursdays Results
=> Well, folks, I'm back in the 805, after a quick trip to see my now 60 year-old sister. On Thursday, after my return, the youngster's, all frosh/sophs, from Orcutt Academy, got me thinking. In only its 2nd year & still sharing a junior high campus, the Spartans are still trying to establish an identity. Unfortunately, the girls tennis team also had trouble with the I.D. of its opponent up on the hill during the post match cheer.
But to be fair, when my sister, a 1967 LHS grad, first started school at Lompoc High they were sharing their campus with the nascent Cabrillo High Hillmen - so it isn't the first time the name has been changed. And the Spartans ? They were Lompoc Junior High.
In any event, the Conquistador jiu-jiu was not working very well yesterday.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Cabrillo
Paso Robles 3, @ Cabrillo 0 [12-25, 19-25, 16-25]
"Coach Jim Hilliard said 'the the girls were awesome' " pronounced Coach Hilliard. "I think that I already said that" said Head Coach Sue Slavins. It's nice when the coaches help you out with an article lead. But to be fair, Slavins had used a number of superlatives to describe her squad's effort versus the Bearcats, and awesome was not one of them. She did, however, quickly add it to the list.
And the words were justified, even if the results were somewhat scarce on the scoreboard. Cabrillo played hard, was in all three games, contested almost every point, and were frequently in long rallies. So what happened ? The Conqs were usually able to get several returns on a point, but had trouble putting the ball away. The Bearcats did not.
Senior hitters Maritza Juarez & Karlee Anderson, along with junior Tess Roundtree in later action, were able to pound down shot, after unreturnable shot. Cabrillo defenders did make several digs in the remarkable to miraculous range, but couldn't make them on a consistent basis.
In game one, the locals only trailed 6-5 when they allowed the 'Cats to go on a pair of long serving runs - punctuated by service aces, and multiple kills by the afore-mentioned hitters. They did figure out in the 2nd half that they could play with the visitors and Paso didn't have any real peace the rest of the evening. They kept the same starters for all three games, and maintained a limited regular substitution rotation, while Slavins played everybody.
Cabrillo was in the game late in both stanzas 2 & 3, closing to 16-20 in game 2, and 12-15 , 16-19 in game 3, but were outscored a combined 11-3 down the stretch in the two games.
Kaylee Long had 10 attacks, and 10 digs. Jessica Rucinski and Tiffany Lee each added 3 more attacks. Chloe Huggins and Kelly O'Connell contributed 10 and 9 digs respectively. Kiley Shae Aldridge had two service aces.
Junior Varsity
@ Cabrillo 2, Paso Robles 1 [19-25, 25-23, 15-12]
It was the Conquistadors who made the plays at the end in this contest, but initially it looked like it might go the other way. After dropping the first game 25-19, despite having been close through most of it, the Conqs were looking at a similar result in game 2.
They were down 20-19 when the Bearcats stepped on the gas, and surged to a 23-19 advantage. Match over ? Not quite. Cabrillo scored 6 in a row, including a 5 serve run from Nikki Friend, and punctuated by 2 massive Caitlin Harvey-Morgan kills.
The final game highlighted superb serving from Kayla Lown, Felicia Bowen, Stephanie Miyamoto and Friend. Katie Schmarje & Miyamoto were all over the court making plays, and no one played scared. It was great volleyball from start to the combo stuff block by Miyamoto and MB Lauren Pluim to end it.
The Bearcats were led by the very tall and soon to be well known in local volleyball circles Emily Cone.
Freshmen
The youngest group on the court had the hardest time of it on Thursday, falling in straight sets 23-25, 10-25. They did put a scare into the visitors early on.
Lompoc
Atascadero 3, @ Lompoc 0 [25-8, 25-10, 25-10][Story]
Atascadero scored the first 10 points of game one, the first six in game two, then in game three, scored six straight points to accelerate away from a 5-5 tie .
Other LPL
@ Santa Ynez 3, Pioneer Valley 0 [25-21, 25-14, 25-12]
Down 11-5 in the first game, the Pirates rallied on six straight serves by Emilie Newton to even the first game at 11. Kills: Rachel Szeyller 7, Danielle Carlson 4, Newton 4 (and 3 aces).
Mission Prep 3, St. Joseph 2 [22-25, 26-28, 28-26, 25-17, 15-8]

San Luis Obispo 14, Cabrillo 8
"This sure wasn't the same team we had last Tuesday against Nipomo" Headman Joel Jory noted after the Conquistadores fell behind 7-0 before posting a goal 0:57 before halftime. The team never really was sharp against the Tigers.
The Conqs just never could quite put things together - missing open shots on breakaways and 5 meter penalties, dropping passes, not swimming to open water or loose balls, and bouncing at least 5 shots off the cage structure. They also never really solved Tiger goalie Tommy Caffrey before he was lifted in the second half.
SLO: Dragan Dincic, from outside, and 2-meter man Kyle McAlaheny, combined for 11 goals.
Cabrillo: Goals - Tyler Chard 4, Marcus Theile 2, Emmett Hill 1, Tyler Thompson 1. Saves -Felix Talkin 12.

The JV was also down 7-1 at the half, having been outscored 5-0 in period #1. They scored once in the 2nd & 4th periods and twice in the third. Four Conqs and 6 Tigers posted goals.

The Conq's prowess in doubles wasn't enough to overcome the Spartans dominance in singles.
OA #'s 1 & 2, Kiki Rivas (6-2,6-0,6-0) and Kasey Ortiz (6-1,6-0,6-0), both swept while compiling a 36-3 (+33) advantage that Coach Doug Meeders ladies never could erase. Their #1 doubles duo, Ari Mariscal & Alyssa Zepeda, also swept (6-3, 6-2, 6-1).
For Cabrillo, Julie 'Noah' de Vonage (6-2), Morgan Coffin (6-4), and Kaylin Rentschler (6-3) each won one set in singles. Freshman Alexandria Siefe was defeated (6-0) by Rivas in her sole singles set. Pairs Lauren Dalton/Eloisa Castilla (7-5, 6-2), Sam Warner/Kelsey Atkin (6-3, 6-2), and Ashley Trolio/Kim Smith (6-1, 7-5) each captured two doubles sets.
FOOTBALL
Cabrillo Frosh
The local gridders fell for the second week in a row, scoring a late TD to close the final margin to 35-13. Head Coach Steve Haskins claims his squad is not big, not fast, and not mean - yet !! He did note good efforts by MLB Jacob Barmer, QB Patrick Benke, and TB Kieth Joseph.

Prep Sports REALLY Get Going
GIRLS TENNIS
At Cabrillo
Cabrillo 14, Nipomo 4 [See Story]
The Conqs returned to their home courts after a year's sojourn playing their home games at Ryon Park, and also returned to their previous coach as Mary-Beth Stieber resumed her prior post. They must have felt pretty good about both situations because they dominated the Titans - posting an 8-1 record in singles sets and 6-3 in doubles.
Veteran singles players Ashley Pennewell (#1) and Julie Leyva (#2) were both undefeated. Pennewell (6-1, 6-0) was held out of the final round due to a recurring tightness in her thigh, while Leyva, won 6-1, 6-0, 6-0. Eisha Ayyar replaced Pennewell and won 6-4. Kaitlyn Phillips, after two years of JV doubles, played in her first singles competition taking 2 of 3 sets (6-2, 6-1, 2-6) and losing only to Nipomo number one Grecia Pena (6-1).
Doubles may be an adventure for both schools this year. Since Nipomo head coach Dee Dee Foat lost 6 seniors off her PAC-7 3rd place/ CIF Wild Card team from last year, she used 3 substitutes in the pairs, and is looking at a group of player up from the JV team. There is one pair she does not have to worry about. Nipomo’s #1 duo Jenny Cardenas / Tessa Underwood swept 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 and Foat expects them to go all the way to CIF.
With only one returning player, Cabrillo still has questions at doubles. The returner, senior Elke Peirtsegaele, teamed with younger sister Nikki for two set wins (2-6, 6-2, 6-0), falling only to Cardenas / Underwood.
At Lompoc
Mission Prep 17, Lompoc 1
The Braves lost their season opener at home in convincing fashion, but Head Coach Loretta Jensen was philisophical - "We have of bunch of players up from the JV, and they need experience."
Rachel Ronca, the Royals top singles player, topped Nicole Nomany, Jessica Cosio, and Emily Tremblay (6-1, 6-0, 6-2). Singles players # 2, Heleana Olivieri (2 games lost), and # 3, Ally Tershorv (5 games lost) also swept. Usual Lompoc singles standout Sameeha Husayn played doubles on Thurday due to illness.
In doubles, the Royals’ #1, Jenna Dunbar / Sophie Seid (6-2, 6-3, 6-1), and #3, Grace Casora / Riquel Santos (7-5, 6-3, 6-1) duos both swept. Korina Esqueda / Azucena Villalobos, the Lompoc's # 2 tandem, teamed up to score the Braves’ only point by defeating Royals #2 Aparna Bhatt / Erin McDonnell 6-4. Complete results will be posted in the forum (eventually).
Other LPL Teams
Paso Robles 13, @ St. Joseph 5
Laura Clowes, the Paso Robles High girls tennis coach saw her team defeat St. Joseph for the first time in her seven-year career at the school. It was the Knights season and home opener.
Bearcat frosh Maria Petiy, in her first high school matches, posted a perfect 3-0 record, which included a stunning comeback against Frankie Estes. Down 5-1 she rebounded to claim a 7-6 (7-3) tie-breaker win in the set. Eszes, St. Joseph’s #1 singles player, won her other two singles matches by 6-1 scores.
The Bearcats’ # 1 singles, Angelica Shubbie, won two of three, while their top doubles tandem, Jessica Shubbie / Katharine Redberg also won two matches. St. Joseph’s top pair, Sammy White / Whitney Bouquet were 2-1 in their three sets.

BOYS WATER POLO
Varsity
Atascadero 18, Cabrillo 11 at the COLAC
In the season opener for both squads, Atascadero used a big 3rd period to outscore Cabrillo 13-6 in the second half. It was a physical contest with numerous routine ejections resulting in a two players fouling out. Another result was a yellow card issued to a complaining coach. The ref explained it this way - "I don't know what you were saying, but you were saying too much of it."
The Conquistadores had plentiful scoring opportunities, especially early on, but had trouble converting break-aways and other open shots. They also had difficulty solving 'Hounds goalie Patrick Neil who posted 13 saves.
The match was evenly contested through the 2-2 first, and was still tied 7-7 at halftime, with neither school able to build more than a two shot lead. The visitors, however, bolted out of the gate to start the 3rd period, scoring unanswered 3 goals in just a few minutes. Cabrillo finally broke the streak with one of Emmet Hill's two goals, but the Greyhounds popped in two more before the final break.
Cabrillo almost book-ended the 4th period scoring, opening with a goal 68 seconds into the action, and dropping in two more in the last 62 seconds. But Atascadero scored with a mere 6 ticks left on the clock and dominated the middle of the the quarter with 5 straight goals by Clarke Andros.
Goals -
Cabrillo Conquistadors: Tyler Chard (4 - all in 2nd Qtr), Emmet Hill (2), and one each by Marcus Thiele, Tyler Thompson, Jose Motyer, Aaron Hay, & Zach Olivera.
Atascadero Greyhounds : Clarke Andros (8), Levi Adams (3), Chad Ponek (3), Jake Vukozich (3).

Junior Varsity
Cabrillo 8, Atascadero 4
The Greyhounds scored the initial two goals, but Cabrillo responded with one in each of the first two quarter for a 2-2 halftime stalemate. After trading goals in the 3rd, the Conqs scored two back-to-back heading into the final period. Atascadero slammed back a rebound off the net frame to cut the margin to a single goal, but Cabrillo closed the door with 3 straight scores for the 8-4 win.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
San Luis Obispo 3, Cabrillo 0 [25-11, 25-20, 25-15].
The Tigers swept but Conqs Head Coach Sue Slavins was "stoked". "The score doesn't show it , but the team played great tonight". Prefering not to highlight individual achievements she provided no stats. Both the JV & Frosh/Soph also lost.
Elizabeth Culpepper led the Tigers with a team-high six kills. Teammate Alex Attala compiled five kills, three aces and five blocks.
Righetti 3, Lompoc 0 [19-25, 11-25, 11-25]
Look out !! These girls are going to get somebody this year, maybe several somebodies. In the opening game of the season for the Braves, the Warriors raced out to a 6-1 lead and some observers were wondering if it were a case of 'the same ole verse, same as the first'. It was not. The Battlin' Braves came back and surged to 11-9 lead. RIGHETTI was forced to take a time out. The visitors regained the lead, but the locals tied it back up at 13 all, and remained within at least 2 points until the Warriors eased ahead 19-16. Lompoc was within 3-4 points until Righetti scored the last 3 for the win.
Game 2 new Head Coach Aaron Batula played almost exclusively with substitutes against most of Righetti's 1st string resulting in a 25-11 loss. The gals did have their moments, however, and given that Batula has instituted an entirely new system this year, the future looks pretty good.
In Game 3, the regulars were back in and faltered a bit, falling behind 11-0. But they did not quit. Down the stretch, they played the Warriors about even (11-14), even with some momentary lapses.
JV: Righetti 2, Lompoc 0 [11-25, 23-25]
The JV squad under Ramona Thomas like-wise put a bit of a scare into the Warriors highly touted unit. They also fell behind early (10-3), but would not give up and kept pace with the visitors the rest of the way (13-15). Believing that they could compete, the girls took a quick 3 point lead, before engaging in a see-saw battle that saw them slowly slipping behind (15-20). Again they rallied, cutting the margin to a sole point (20-21), before being eased out at the end.
Frosh : Righetti 2, Lompoc 0 [8-25, 4-25]
Other LPL Teams:
Paso Robles 3, St. Joseph 0
Tess Rountree had a match-high 12 kills in leading Paso Robles to a 25-20, 25-13, 25-21 victory. Karlee Anderson added nine kills and two blocks for the Bearcats in their season opener. Kellie Reynolds led Paso Robles with a match-high 27 assists.
Atascadero 3, Morro Bay 0
Atascadero came out strong in its opener, sweeping 25-12, 25-22, 25-8.
Atascadero - Kiah Featherstone 16 kills, 3 blocks & Samantha Shemick 8 kills.
Arroyo Grande 3, Santa Ynez 1
The Eagles rallied from a 1-0 deficit to take a 23-25, 25-20, 25-15, 28-26 victory.
