Wednesday was about the LPL X-C Mid-Season All-Duals Meet at a somewhat damp River Park and and Water Polo action around the central coast.

LPL Mid-Season All Duals

Meet Director & Cabrillo Head Coach Peter Anderson was still a bit surprised - "I'm just happy we got to race today." After all the wind & rain, they did race, and his Conqs did particularly well. The girls went 4-2, and the boys put a virtual hammerlock on the league title. They posted a 6-0 record, while their perennial nemesis, Morro Bay, was 4-2.

This meet, as the title indicates, consisted of all dual meets. Each race was scored by comparing every school's finish against every other school heads-up - 21 matches per race.

Boys Varsity

The top three teams were all without some of their key runners and the expected battle for the top spot between Cabrillo & Morro Bay was upended by Santa Maria's 2nd place finish. Cabrillo was missing its 1 (Levi Block), 3, & 4 runners, Morro Bay was missing numbers 1 (James Shippe), 4, & 5, and even the Saints were down #2 Cipriano Carmona. The 3rd place finish by Morro Bay, ranked 2nd in CIF Div IV, means that even if the Pirates win the LPL Finals Meet, they will need another team to also beat Cabrillo to enable them to win the title.

Girls Varsity

This one was about northern SLO County, both Templeton & Morro Bay put 3 finishers in the top 10, lead by the Eagle's Kaley Hook [18:03]. Her teammate Savannah Camacho [18:36] was second, with St Joseph girls taking the 3rd, Quetta Peinedo [19:07], and 5th, Bridget Adam [19:39], while Monica Illes of SY crossed in fourth.

The top local finisher was the Braves Ashley Fabing [19:43], and Britni Heter [20:18] led the Conqs.

Lompoc 16, Santa Maria 8 [Story]

Lompoc took advantage of 9 breakaway counter goals and scored 3 more with a man-up. They led 10-5 after 3 quarters, and 15-5 about halfway through the final stanza. Josh Rondash was solid in goal.

Singles : Ashley Pennewell & Julie Leyva won 2 of 3, Kaitlyn Phillips won her 3rd set and Morro Bay's Megan Hansen swept her three sets.

Doubles : Cabrillo took all 9 sets. Elke Piertsegaele / Nikki Piertsegaele only gave up 2 games, Bree Piper-Williams / Ashley Bowman [6-0, 6-3, 6-1] lost four, and Andrianna Siefe / Alena Taber [6-2, 6-2, 6-4] dropped eight.

Junior Varsity at MBHS

Cabrillo 17, Morro Bay 1

This one wasn't even close to being close. The Cabrillo singles swept, surrendering only 7 games in 9 sets, and the doubles were almost as dominant. Cabrillo won seven of the 9 sets by a combined 42-10 advantage, lost one set 6-2, and were leading another 5-1, when the Pirates rallied to take the lead 6-5. Cabrillo came back to take that one 7-6 (7-5) in a tiebreaker. [More results will be posted in the Forum]

The Braves received 2 points in singles - both fron Sameeha Husayn, and 4 points from the doubles. Duos Korina Esqueda / Azucena Villalobos and Jessica Cosio / Ashley Branson each won two sets.

One of the disadvantages of being a JV coach, is that when you do have a good player they are likely going to be swiped by the varsity. That's what happened to the Brave's Jim Steffey, as #1 singles player, Cera Mitchell, was called up for her first varsity road trip. Since Mitchell was usually good for 2-3 sets, the JV singles suffered as a result. Steffey did get some good news in doubles though, Amargiete Larios, who had been out a week, and Sarah Carillo, who missed last Thursday's match, were both back in the line-up.

Singles [0-9, 5-54]: Karen Martin [1-6, 2-6, 0-6], Diep Chang [0-6, 0-6, 1-6], and Isela Caudillo [0-6, 1-6, 0-6] were not able to keep up with Templeton's Rose Dickey, Nicole Roberts, and Hannah Yates.

Doubles [5-4, 36-34]: The Braves actually won the doubles by a narrow margin. Catalina Perez / Amargiete Larios swept - defeating Lily Honer-Holstin / Michelle Corten 7-5, Rachel Parker / Quinn Risigliano 6-2, and Lauren Van Barkin / Emily Miller 6-0. Sarah Carillo teamed with Janett Ruiz for two sets [1-6, 3-6], and with Naomi Guevara to beat the #3's Van Barkin / Miller 6-0. Jessica Meza / Jennifer Magana split two sets [1-6, 6-3], posting a win over Templeton's #3 duo. Meza then paired with Esme Verdin for a 0-6 loss to the #1's.

In Progress 2 - Both Doubles Matches

Singles: Juniors Emily Ineman (SY) and Frankie Eszes (SJ #1) played a long singles set, which Eszes finally won 6-3. Eszes, unbeaten in the LPL, was swept 6-0, 6-3, 6-1. Ineman [6-1, 6-4]and # 3 singles,Alisa Silsbee, both won twice. St. Joseph's No. 3 singles player, Chelsea Pudwill, held off Kathleen de Goede, 6-4, to give the Knights their ninth point. This followed a rally by de Goede, who was in the #1 slot Thursday, from 5-2 down.

Doubles (Completed):

Sammy White / Ellie McPike, the Knights' top pair who are undefeated in the LPL, twice rallied from 3-5 to win sets, while taking their other set 6-3. They were down set point against Bianca Capasso / Kylie Petersen, but Capasso netted a forehand. McPike then used some big first serves to win some big points, andthe match ended when Capasso shot wide.


Down a break at 3-5, White / McPike were able to square their set with Sophie Brandstatter / Sydney Tack at 5 all. Serving while trailing 15-40 on, Tack hit three aces for duece, but the Pirates were eventually broken. White won the set with a crosscourt forehand winner.

Noe / Bouquet, fell behind 4-5, but won the last three games versus Brandstatter /Tack. Noe digging out a low shot for a backhand winner to end it.

Capasso /Petersen slipped past Noe / Bouquet in a 7-6 (8-6) tiebreaker.

Doubles (Incomplete):
A) St. Joseph's # 2 doubles Whitney Bouquet / Christine Noe lead Santa Ynez's # 3 pair Sophie Brandstatter / Sydney Tack 4-3

B) Santa Ynez # 1's Bianca Capasso / Kylie Petersen were up 5-4 on Knights' # 3 tandem Paige Jaeckels / Brittany Chartier.The match will resume .

Tack / Brandstatter, and Capasso / Petersen each rallied from 4-1 down to keep the Pirates hope alive.

With both sets were on serve; the match will resume Wednesday at 4 p.m..
St. Joseph leads by one in total games, so the Knights must win at least one set Wednesday to take the match. Santa Ynez will win if the sets wind up 9-9.

Girls Volleyball

At Cabrillo HS

At times this year the Cabrillo volleyball squad has seemed like a finely tuned race car. Thursday night it was more like the family sedan with clogged fuel injectors that ran out of gas on the freeway on-ramp. The effort was there, but everything just seemed to be slightly off. Head Coach Sue Slavens - "They were flat, what else can I say".

Even with the 'mechanical' problems the crew had a chance to win this match, they just had too many breakdowns at key moments. Mishit serves that fluttered into the net, hits long, hit wide, balls that rolled over the net and fell in for the Pirates, but rolled back for the Conqs, it was always something.

There was also the factor of a very efficient Morro Bay team, especially on defence. They spent most of the night doing what Cabrillo usually does - just keep sending the ball back over. Libero Monica Santiago always seemed to be where-ever Cabrillo hit the ball, and also served very successfully.

Game 1: It was a Back-and-forth contest early on with neither team able to establish any rhythm. With the score tied at 8, a Cabrillo return attempt hit a ceiling-hung banner - the Conqs couldn't recover and lost the point and the serve. Morro Bay then went on a run, pushing the score to 16-10, but Cabrillo would crawl back into contention.

Kaylee Long, with a pair of kills and an ace; Summer Galvin's kill and a block; and a Jessica Rucinski kill helped the Conqs to within a single point (20-19). However, a Gabby Wenker kill and 4 sucessive mishits by the locals gave the Pirates a bunch of gamepoint opportunities at 24-19. A sideout for Cabrillo was followed by a Jenna Hilliard ace & a kill to close to 24-23, but then the engine sputtered. On the next point, after a terrific defensive series, a Cabrillo player flipped the ball at the net. It hit the top tape and began to roll over the top, stopped 3 quarters of the way over, spun slightly, and dropped back on the Conqs side of the net.

Game 2: Cabrillo quickly fell behind 9-2, and never really recovered. The did make a couple of runs, closing to within a few points twice (8-10, 9-12), but MB put it in overdrive. Tia Gacad had several kills for the visitors during the surge, but it still took Morro Bay 4 shots at gamepoint before they won.

Game 3: Cabrillo took several small/medium (2-4 points) leads early, with the Pirates able to re-tie the game (8-8, 9-9, 10-10, 11-11) mid-way through. Santiago then served 5 straight, until a Kristina Goodchild tip won back the ball. On the ensuing service return, Morro Bay had a shot that just rolled over the top of the net onto the Conq side for the side-out.

A Tiffany Lee kill, and a block, pulled Cabrillo back within two (16-14), and was followed by a series of mistakes by both sides that resulted in the Conqs serving - up 18-17. That serve was an almost complete whiff that never made it to the net. An ace by Alice Hermann tied it up, and although Cabrillo had some chances, Morro Bay outscored them 6-3 down the stretch.

"The CHS JV Volleyball team showed great perseverance and solid teamwork
last night when they capsized the Morro Bay Pirates in three games; 23-25, 25-7,
and 15-2.

Incredible serving (Stacy Harmon served 10 in a row w/ 4 of them being aces
and Katie Schmarje had 9 consecutive serves with 6 of them being aces) and solid
defense, Lauren Pluim had 3 stuff blocks.

The team didn't allow any points in game 2 and 3 to server receive errors.
Other stats: Felicia Bowen had 2 blocks, 3 ace serves, 5 kills, and 6 digs.
Caitlin Harvey-Morgan had 4 ace serves and 5 kills."

Brianna Farley's cast is scheduled to come off on the 10th, but the Conquistadors haven't had too many problems without the services of one of their tallest players. Thursday afternoon they topped the Pirates in straight sets, despite starting a bunch of new people in game 2. The win improved their record to 4-1 in LPL action.

Santa Ynez wasted no time in declaring themselves the #1 team in the LPL, and they did it the right way - on the court. They defeated St Joseph in straight sets, and have yet to drop a game in LPL play.

The Pirates used big runs to skip away from the Knights, several of those streaks, including a 9-0 run to end the game two, were the result of senior setter MacKenzie Mexico bigtime serves.

Mexico and fellow setter Delanie Stapp consistently put the ball where it could be pounded by their teammates, thus the Pirates' 42 team kills total was no surprise.

Game 1: The Pirates, up 10-7, relied on strenth of Mexico's serving and kills at key times by Squires and Danielle Carlson, to put together a 9-1 run to put the game out of reach. The Knights did close the distance with a 7-1 run at the end, but it was too late. A hitting error put the game in the Pirates's column - 25-17.

Game 2: The Knights hung around for a while, but with the score knotted at 16, Santa Ynez took nine consecutive points to slam the door. Like game 1, this one ended with a St. Joe hitting error.

Game 3: New game, but more of the same - Pirates 25-11.
The Pirates closed out the match with a convincing 25-11 win in the third.

Danielle Gillaspy, shooting a par 36, continued her strangle-hold on the medalist of the match awards this season. Cabrillo's Morgan Salm and Kristen Henno (Santa Ynez) tied for second with scores of 39.

The Braves caught a tiger by the tail - actually a whole group of them. They did not enjoy the experience. San Luis romped at Huyck Thursday night 48-0.

Cabrillo
The CHS JV plays on Friday before the Varsity game at Santa Ynez. Game times are 4:30 for the JV & 7:30 for the varsity.

Freshman

Lompoc
Lompoc beat San Luis Obispo 28-0, scoring twice in the first half, including a 61 yard run by Tyler Cornejo. Nico Hayes went 25 yards for a TD, and Lavon Coleman plowed 4 yards for another in the 2nd half. Jose Morales kicked all 4 extra points, and had a 35 yard FG attempt hit the top of crossbar in the 4th.

Cabrillo
The Conqs collected their second victory in as many weeks, shutting out Santa Ynez 21-0. Coach Steve Haskins noted the play of Cole Osborne at QB, and of Keith Joseph and Demme on the defensive side of the ball. Osborne hooked up with Colby Turnquist for a 37 yard score, with Joseph (27 yards) and Patrick Burke (66 yards) putting points on the board via the run.

Water Polo Wednesday

Cabrillo 16, Morro Bay 6

The Conquistadors won this one easily - eventually. They breezed through 2 quarters of uninspired polo, then had a particularly lackluster 3rd period, before finally playing close to the potential they showed against San Marcos on Tuesday.

Cabrillo scored the first 3 goals of the game and finished the initial period up 4-1. It could have been much better. The sole Pirate goal came on a 5-meter penalty shot after a completely unnecessary foul, and after Cabrillo blew several scoring chances including a 5-meter of their own.

In the second period, Morro Bay scored their 2nd goal after a double ejection foul was called with the Conqs already down a man. How bad was it ? The call was made by referee Bob "Mr. Cabrillo Water Polo" Boyer - the retired CHS Athletic Director & Water Polo Head Coach. It got worse. Later in the quarter, each team missed 5-meter penalty shots. {For those new to the sport, it's rare to see more than 1-2 5-meter penalties in a game. And all of these were deserved.}

The 3rd period play was egregious. The Pirates, who only dressed 9 players, out-scored the Conqs 3-1, despite clearly tiring. Two of the goals were on 5-meter penalty shots (Morro Bay was 2-3 on the quarter). The real squad showed up in the final stanza, as Cabrillo had two four-goal runs sandwiched around Morro Bay's only goal of the period.

The JV apparently paid attention to the first game, and tried to replicate it. The Pirates struck first, then Cabrillo reeled off 5 straight points (4 in the 1st period). Game Over ? Not quite. The visitors ran off 5 of their own in the second, and led at half 6-5. The Conqs posted 5 of the 6 goals in the third quarter for 10-7 lead. A 4th quarter MB goal cut the margin to 2, but Cabrillo scored the last 3 goals to seal the win.

The Braves ceded the Knights a 4-1 first quarter lead, but rallied a bit in the second to trail 4-3 at halftime. They gave those gains back in the 3rd, when they were outscored 3-0. In the 4th, two quick goals by Daniel Dunaetz & Robert Macias brought the Braves within one.

St Joseph scored a countering goal, but Carl Thacker and Dunaetz both hit shots to tie the game at seven. That was as close as they got, however, as the Knights scored the final 2 goals to win 9-7.

Lompoc had opportunities but couldn't convert, including 7 man-up situations during which they only scored twice.

The Pirates exploded for 5 goals in the fourth period to blow open a close (5-4) game. After taking a 3-1 lead in the first, Santa Ynez was up 4-2 at the break. The Saints closed the gap to two in the third, before the Pirates got serious.

The shortage of local water polo officials was so acute that these two were tasked with working the San Marcos @ Cabrillo JV water polo match. They may look familiar ...

In a bit of depature for local polo, the JV's faced off first in this one.

You don't see scores like this one very often in water polo, but honestly, there was defense in this game. Cabrillo goalkeeper Felix Talkin had seventeen saves and Royals goalie Chris Bebb was solid (5 saves), but both teams were launching shots like NASA in the late 60's.

Cabrillo used goals from 4 different shooters to jump out to a quick 4-1 advantage, but two Travis Johnson scores after ejections and a Ben Battles lob tied it at four. Tyler Chard & Marcus Thiele would put the Conqs back up by two, but the Royals would score twice in the final 23 seconds to end the first period at 6-6.

The top half of quarter #2 was more Cabrillo score and San Marcos answer -repeat, then the Royals scored 4 in a row to finish the half with a 12-9 lead.

The third period continued the visitors control as they outscored the Conqs 4-1 - Cabrillo's only goal coming with 12 ticks left on the clock. The fourth was more of the same, with a 3-1 Royals margin for the 19-11 final.

Cabrillo 7, San Marcos 4 [6 minute quarters]

It wasn't the refs !! This was a basically even game, except for a half minute late in the 2nd period. Each squad would score at least one goal in every period.

Cabrillo's Simon Reep opened the scoring in the first, but the Royals answered 3 minutes later. Second verse same as the first, Nate Chandler hits one, but SM responded 2 minutes later to knot the score at 2 apiece. Then, with 45 seconds left in the half, Reep hit his 2nd goal which was followed 25 seconds later by Alfredo Navarro's first, and the locals had a 4-2 lead at halftime.

The teams would exchange goals in the 3rd, but Reep would drop in his 3rd goal of the game with 0:42 on the clock to put the Conqs up 6-3. The Royals would score first to narrow the lead to 2 (6-4), but Chandler popped in another one to make the final 7-4.

Pioneer Valley scored four goals in the fourth quarter Tuesday to force overtime against Morro Bay. Both units were scoreless in the first overtime, but Morro Bay hit one goal in the second OT period to win the game.

The Panthers came to town looking for a non-league win, but went home disappointed. Lompoc demonstrated slightly better depth with wins by both the singles & doubles #2's over their counterparts, and had a huge win at #3 doubles to take the match 10-8, despite being behind (71-73) on games.

The visitors #1 's did not drop a set, their #3 's did not win any - so the match was decided by the the #2's. Lompoc's were better - winning 2 of 3 in each discipline. Lompoc won round #1 4-2, and held on with 3-3 scores in the next two.

Singles (5-4, 32-32) - The Panthers #1, Caitlyn 'The Real Deal' Brown [6-0,6-0,6-0], rolled through the Braves line-up of Nicole Nomany, Sameeha Husayn, & Emily Tremblay without losing a game. Husayn won her other two sets, over Marina Villafuerte & Alyssa Santana, by 6-1 scores, and Tremblay defeated them 6-1, 6-4 respectively.

It was the first time this season that Tremblay had won two sets in the same match. Nomany gave way in rounds 2 & 3 to Cera Mitchell, up from the JV squad, who went 1-1. She topped Santana 6-1 and fell 6-4 to Villafuerte.

Doubles (5-4, 39-41) - Preet Gill / Gabby Gonzales [6-1, 6-1, 6-4] also swept for the Pathers, with the Katie Bowman / Ally Morales combo collecting the other PV point [6-2]. Korina Esqueda / Ashley Branson [1-6, 2-6] were shut out, but Korina teamed with Elena Bastianelli to beat the Panthers #3 duo, Anette Santana / Ryan Martin, by a 6-3 score in the third round. Jessica Cosio / Azucena Villalobos [1-6, 6-4, 6-0] won two of three, as did Rosa Carreno / Julie Abrego [4-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4].

The highlight was the come-from-behind, tiebreak win by Carreno / Abrego over Bowman /Morales late in the day. The Braves were behind in both the set and the tiebreaker and rallied to win the 8th point of the match. Husayn collected #9, and the Esqueda / Bastianelli win put Lompoc over the top.

The Conquistadors were not intimidated and they quickly got St Joseph's attention. They came out in game 1, raced out to an 18-8 lead and blew the Knights off the court 25-12. It was like kicking over a nest of angry wasps though, as a clearly now fully engaged St Joes team, won game 2 25-18. Cabrillo did not simply fade away, down 17-23 in game 3 they rallied to tie at 25 all before a Natsha Kolbo kill and Mary Clare Rigali serve put the game away.

The Conqs led for most of game 4, but were caught at the finish. Up 19-15, the visitors crept back into competition. Consecutive kills by Hayley Baldwin & Analise Riezebos, were followed by a serve by the libero, Shannan Swaim, that hit the net, spun over the top, and dropped in for a point. A net violation tied it at 19. Jenna Hilliard then had two kills to put Cabrillo up 21-19, but kills by Kolbo & Rigali knotted the score at 22 shortly after.

A Kaylee Long tip and a Knight net violation gave Cabrillo a game point, but a Kolbo tip-in, and a Riezebos monster shot brought the score back to even at 24. A carry call on Cabrillo, and a return into the net ended the game.

Cabrillo went 1-4, beating St Joseph 10-6, and losing to Atascadero (10-6), Santa Ynez in a close one (5-3), and by 5-6 points to both Mt Whitney [Visalia] & Brea Olinda.


St. Joseph (2-9 overall) went 1-4. The Knights beat Morro Bay 14-5 and lost to Walnut Creek Las Lomas (15-4), San Marcos (10-6), LPL rival Cabrillo (10-6) and Nipomo (9-8 in overtime).

St Joseph: Scoring - Andy Boniface 10 goals. Sean McDonald & Vinnie Villalpando also were major contributers. Saves - goal keepers Tyler Stetson (32) and Nolan Kruse (28).

Cabrillo Alumni Water Polo

Cabrillo High School will host an alumni water polo match on Saturday, Oct. 24 at the school’s on-campus pool. The evening will start at 6 p.m. with a special ceremony honoring 1995 graduate Derek Argel, who was killed while serving his country in Iraq. A plaque will be dedicated in his memory on the pool deck.

The alumni will then play an odd-even match at 6:30 p.m., featuring players who graduated in odd years taking on players from the even years. And at 7 p.m., the current varsity team will then play an alumni team.

Hancock College’s Lompoc Valley Center

Vapor Trail Vettes is hosting a Low Speed Autocross Saturday, Oct. 31 at the LVC, 1 Hancock Dr., Lompoc. Race day begins at 8 a.m. with registration, check-ins and tech inspections. There is a mandatory drivers meeting at 9:15 a.m. and the first car heads out at 9:30 a.m.

Who else could it be, right ? Doesn't seem like it, but that 1990 CIF Championship is now 19 years ago.

Homecoming at Huyck

After a moment of silence for long-time "chain-gang" crew member Alan Probst who recently passed away, the Cabrillo Conquistadors celebrated their first victory of the season by defeating the Santa Maria Saints 29-21 at Huyck Stadium Friday night.

It was a very strange game in some ways. Santa Maria opened the game in, and frequently used a variation of the old Notre Dame box formation. They also used the 'wildcat', but gained must of their yardage via the pass. Cabrillo, on the other hand, never threw a pass.

The Saints opened the game looking like an offensive juggernaut, but had trouble moving the ball all night. Cabrillo scored on 3 of 5 first half possessions - the other two being a missed FG and taking a knee to run out the clock, but could not put offensive points on the board in half number two.

The Saints first play of the game was a 45 yard blur of a run down the east sideline by Terrell Dillon, but they only picked up 95 total yards rushing all night. Santa Maria also turned the ball over three times in the 1st half (2 fumbles & a pick), and, after halftime, turned it over on a safety and twice on downs.

In short, it was big plays on offense from the visitors, and steady offense for the Conquistadors after big plays by their defense.

Santa Maria took the opening kickoff and drove 77 yards in 5 plays for the opening score - on a play that was the initial pass of the game. It was a 31 yard Chris Valdez launch that went through the hands of a CHS defender and tipped right into the hands of Steven Reyes. The Guillermo Rodriguez kick put the Saints up by seven.

Cabrillo responded with a 13 play, 65 yard TD drive that featured Jordan Watson. He had 6 runs for 40 yards, including the 4 yard capper. The extra point attempt failed, so the Conqs were still down one. That didn't last long. The Saints ensuing possession was a 3-and-out, and Pat Cook returned the resulting punt 34 yards, setting up a 9 yard Kyle Avilanoza blast up the middle for another TD. Fernando Osua's kick made it 13-7.

Santa Maria picked up a first down, but their second pass attempt of the evening was intercepted and returned 28 yards by Jordan Watson, putting the Conqs in business at the 16-yardline of the visitors. QB T.J. Babuata finished off the drive with back-to-back runs of 9 and 1 yards, but also finished off his participation in the contest. He took a blow to the knee, which caused some "looseness" in the knee, and the staff pulled him from the game as a precaution. Avilanoza moved to QB, and Sisto Solis took his spot in the backfield.

Following a Santa Maria punt and a missed 32 yard field goal, the Cabrillo defense would put the offense back in business deep in Saints territory. A holding penalty and a SAC/ Forced Fumble set up the Conqs at the SM 7 yardline. Cabrillo would not waste time, Solis carried for 4, and Watson went the rest of the way to extend the lead to 27-7.

Santa Maria gave the Conqs a scare - a 36 yard completion into Cabrillo's side of the field, but then fumbled again. Avilanoza took a knee and led the team into the locker room up 20 at halftime.

During the break, previously announced Homecoming King Paul Rhen, was joined by Homecoming Queen Katie O'Malley. She was crowned by the '08 Queen 'Pinky' Dobbins.

The second half began with the only successful onside kick of the 3 attempted by the Saints in the half. And, like the game opener, Santa Maria used the pass to strike deep. A 33 yard bomb on 3rd & 10, set them up on the Conq 8, and they scored 4 plays later on a 6 yard pass to Jonathan Galvan.

Cabrillo would punt on its next 4 (14 plays for 20 yards), and the Saints punted on their next two. While attempting to punt a third time, they had the kick blocked through the endzone for a safety by Brandon Nicastro. Cabrillo put themselves in difficulty by drawing 2 holding penalties and allowing a SAC their next time on the field, so the Saints got the ball at their own 39 with 9:35 left, trailing 29-13.

It was the aerial attack they turned to, although Cabrillo helped out with 20 yards in penalties, including a pass interference flag. The Saints picked up 15 on a Brian Delgadillo reception, 7 more on a Valdez scramble, and a 21 yard TD catch by Daniel De la Cruz. A throw by Valdez to De la Cruz then netted 2 more points, and the Saints were only 8 back at 29-21.

Taking the ball with 8:39 remaining, Cabrillo turned the ball over on downs. The Saints gave it back the same way, but not before a wide open reciever dropped a pass at the Conq 12 yardline. Cabrillo fumbled the ball away, but Santa Maria again returned it on downs. Finally, with just under a minute left, Cabrillo had Avilanoza run out the clock by going to a knee on 3 straight plays.

Thursday's Action

It was quite a day for girls golf - Arroyo Grande collected the first ever league tournament win in the 10 year history of the program , St. Joseph set a school record low score (212), and a 14 year-old high school freshman, Alexis Thompson, shot an opening round 65 for the clubhouse lead (1 stroke back at the end of the round) of this weeks LPGA event.

At Rancho Maria GC – Thursday, October 1, 2009

Tournament medalist Danielle Gillaspy's even par 35 for the nine holes, helped propel host St. Joseph to the six-team tournament win at Rancho Maria Golf Club. Her teammate Marissa Gutierrez (39) was 2nd, with Cabrillo's Morgan Salm (40) & Santa Ynez's Kristin Henno (40) tying for 3rd. The Knights shot a school record low score (212), which was just enough to nip Santa Ynez at 214.

The Conquistadores powered themselves to a 3-0 LPL record, by winning 8 doubles points and getting a clean sweep from Ashley Pennewell. Sisters Nikki and Elke Piertsegaele also dropped only one game in a three-set sweep. Danielle Rivas, Glenda Polancos and Deenice Natividad each earned a singles point for the Saints, with Kyla Johnson / Eunice Gonzalez taking a doubles point.

The SY Pirates won all nine doubles sets, spurred by sweeps from tandems Sophie Brandstater / Sydney Tack & Bianca Cappaso / Kylie Petersen. Megan Hansen, Hannah Richardson, and Danielle Roske took the three singles points for the MB Pirates.

This note from Coach Jennifer Smith - Advancing their league record to 3-0, CHS JV volleyball team showed great mental toughness in defeating the SM Saints in 2 games. Both games were nail biters! In the first game we were down 0-13. After a long hard fought battle - not to mention Stacy Harmon's 12 consecutive serves (4 of them being aces) - CHS prevailed! The second game we took an early lead only to let SM get back into the game and even the score at 21-21. CHS played smart ball to finish them off. This win was a true team effort - everyone contributed to earn the "W".
