Conq Shock
The local 2013-2014 School Year high school sports season got underway on Thursday, with the first games that officially count being tallied by the two Valley High Schools 'Frosh' Football squads. There were also scrimmages at all three levels for both Girls Volleyball programs.
The big news was the stunning debut on the road by the Cabrillo Freshman Football Team.
Thursday, 29 August, 2013
Football:
Cabrillo 60 at San Marcos 0 [FR 4 pm] at Warkentin Stadium
CHS Frosh Head Coach Brad Rudolph passed along this game report -
Arroyo Grande 20 vs Lompoc 6 [FR 4 pm] at Huyck Stadium
Meanwhile at Huyck, the Braves played a feisty AG Eagles group that was looking to maintain the level set by last years 8-1 unit. Kameron Davis hit Ben Odom for about 10 yards and a score to send the game to halftime knotted at 6 all. Unfortunately, Lompoc couldn't quite keep up with the speed of the Eagles Cameron Johnston. He had several long runs to set up a short passing TD late in the 3rd Quarter, and had a 44yd jaunt to the endzone to close the scoring early in the 4th.
Both Teams are on the road next Thursday -
Cabrillo at Righetti while Lompoc heads over to the Central Valley (Yea, 5 hr bus ride) for a contest with Frontier HS in Bakersfield.
Girls Volleyball:
Righetti at Cabrillo [FR 4p, JV 5p, V 6p] SCRIMMAGE- NO SCORE
The Cabrillo gym became a volleyball laboratory of sorts on Thursday evening. Diana Strasbaugh brought a Righetti team over to the Valley that is almost evenly divided between the new and the 'old' - just like the Conquistadors. The varsity gals battled it out over the course of three 20-minute periods with the early advantage going the Warriors way, but Cabrillo pulled even in the 2nd and 'won' the 3rd.
While each team played well at times, both coaches, Strasbaugh & CHS Assistant Cody Hilliard, commented on the need for their respective charges to improve their communication, teamwork, and the integration of the new players. In addition, it was noted that Righetti needed work on their blocking & Cabrillo on their overall consistency.
Although, CHS Head Coach Jim Hilliard was out of town on business, the rest of the staff filled in quite well, and the team received moral support from a number of recent graduates including 2013 star Lauren Pluim.
Lauren, now a freshman on the CP-SLO Women's Volleyball Team, has worked her way past the knee problems she experienced in recent years, but a new problem has emerged. At a practice session she took a ball to the head and was rendered unconscious, so she is now on the NCAA concussion protocol.
The team starts its season 30 Aug at the Colorado St tournament & she, understandably, was not selected for the 12-player travel squad. She might be out a while, and since there are 4 Middle Blockers on the 18 member team - including 2 seniors, there is some speculation that she might be red-shirted this year.
Lompoc at St Joseph [FR 4p, JV 5p, V 6p] SCRIMMAGE-NO SCORE
No Information Yet Received.
The official action for the Girls starts next Thursday (5 Sep):
San Luis Obispo at Cabrillo [FR 4p, JV 5p, V 6p]
Righetti at Lompoc [FR 4p, JV 5p, V 6p]

2013 Lompoc GVB Alumni Game
The 2013 edition of the Annual clash between the current crop of Braves and the representatives of a few prior harvests took place on Thursday, 22 August to the delight of a boisterous crowd at Paisola Pavillion.
The Braves won !!!
Granted that was sort of pre-ordained since all 4 teams playing were denominated 'Braves', but the whole program were winners Thursday night.
The Alumni got to revisit the scenes of past 'glory (?)',spend some time with friends, and try and show the whipper-snappers that they still know a thing or two about the game.
The Varsity showed tremendous improvement in defeating a very game Alumni squad to even the series at 2-2. The JV dominated the Frosh in their Contest. And the Freshmen got to play on 'the big stage'.
Perhaps more importantly, the spaghetti dinner fundraiser which followed the games had a line out the door.
It was also great to see Alumni Coach Dom Savella up and about. He is slowly recovering from back surgery and related problems.
It was also great to learn that 2008 LHS Grad Alyssa Hamlin, well known for her 'joie de vivre' has returned to the school as a Math Teacher.
The Alumni team consisted of:
00 Elena Hockett 2012
2 Cameron Lizzaraga 2009
4 Shelbi Tosti 2008
5 Imelda Fuentes 2012
6 Yasmin Leonides 2012

Danny Duffy
Thought I'd catch up with a few valley alumni -
Danny Duffy - Kansas City Royals [MLB]
Coming off of rehab for 'Tommy John' surgery, Danny Duffy [CHS] pitched ok in his initial start - back on 7 August against the Minnesota Twins. It wasn't really up to Duffy standards, however. He gave up 2 runs (both earned) on 6 hits, 2 walks, and a wild pitch in 3 and 2/3rds innings - resulting in a 4.31 ERA. While he had 7 strikeouts, and KC did win (5-2), he was inconsistent - the bugaboo of the major leagues, and was sent back down to the minors.
He threw 1 inning there and performed well enough in the game and training to be called back up. That was the good news. The bad news was that he slated to start versus the Detroit Tigers - in a match-up with Tiger ace Justin Verlander (Cy Young, 6 time All-Star) in game 1 of a double-header.
Not to worry though. On Friday (16 August) in Detroit, he opened with a hitless 5 2/3 innings until likely AL MVP Miguel Cabrera broke it up with a single. No damage was done however as Duffy induced Prince Fielder to ground out to the thirdbaseman for the last out of the inning. That was also his final pitch of the game, finishing with no runs allowed, 1 hit, 3 walks, 3 strikeouts and a much more Duffy-like 1.86 ERA. The 3 walks, and a hit batter, indicate that he might not be all the way back just yet, but there are very few coaches who would unhappy with 6 innings at a 1.86 ERA clip from their starter - especially when they get a 2-1 win over the Tigers and their 2011 MVP pitcher.
Update: Unfortunately Duffy who was brought up as the 26th player for the double-header, was sent back down to the Omaha Storm Chasers on the 17th. He stayed with the team in Detroit however, to throw on the side over the weekend. He will return to KC with the Major League squad, before heading to Omaha for a start versus the New Orleans Zephyrs. It is expected that he will return to the 'bigs' no later than the roster expansion on September 1st.

Frank and Jurgen
2013 US Masters Swimming Summer Nationals
[August 7-11, 2013; Marguerite Aquatic Center, Mission Viejo, Ca.]Frank Piemme at the LAC back in 2009 |
Long-time Lompoc resident Frank Piemme and his pal - former Valley denizen Jurgen Schmidt had somewhat pedestrian weeks (for them) down south. Frank took 1st in all 5 of his individual races, while Jurgen had three 1sts and two 2nd-place finishes. Oh, and then there were the two WORLD RECORDS that they helped destroy in the mixed relay. All the races were held in a 'Long Course, Meters' format.
Frank Piemme [88 yo] competing in the 85-89 yo age bracket was 1st in the 50 M races for all 4 strokes (Free, Fly, Breast. Back) and the 100 M freestyle. Although he wasn't able to set any records, no one else was able to touch his National marks in the 100M Free, 200M Free, 400M Free, 50M Breast, or 50M Fly either. [He entered the contest holding 27 of the 53 age group records (15 of 18 in Short Course, Yards).]
Jurgen Schmidt [90yo] competed in the 90-94 bracket Freestyle events from 50-800M, finishing 1st in the 50M, 100M and 400M. He placed 2nd in the 200M & 800M, losing both times to 91yo Masters legend Williard Lamb.
Schmidt broke his own record in the 400M, but Lamb broke Schmidt's National Records in the 200M, 800M, & 1500M as part of his 5 record-setting performances at the meet.
Both former founding members of LOST (Lompoc's Other Swim Team) then participated in the 200M Freestyle and 200M Medley Mixed Relays with fellow Mission Viejo Masters Swim Team members Maurine Kornfeld (92) and Rita Simonton (95). Both performances were spectacular. In the 360-399 total age bracket 200M Free they posted a time of 3:36.7 shattering both the USMS Record of 5:26.80 set in 2003 and the currently posted World mark of 4:18.13 set by a Japanese squad back in 2005. [FINA World Record listings are only updated a few times per year - the next update is likely to be in November.]
Their 360-399 total age bracket 200M Medley time of 4:19.30 is also like to be a WR when the postings are made since there is no current listing. The foursome posted US record times earlier this year in the 400M Free, 800M Free, and 400M Medley which might also qualify as WR's.
The team competition was essentially a two horse race, despite having almost 1400 swimmers that qualified to represent 100+ teams from across North America. The duo combined for 106 of Mission Viejo's 1085.5 points as the club took a narrow 46.5 point victory over San Diego on the Men's side. They then each added an additional 11 Mixed Relay points, but MVST up 106 points short in the overall numbers

Fall 2013 Return
We are firing up the (mostly) trusty old 'puter again to cover Lompoc Valley sports as best we can for the Fall 2013 season. This next week will be a few stories about some Valley athletes and events we deem worthy of note, and next week we will start reviews and previews of the fall HS sports - Football, Coed Cross-Country, Girls Tennis/Volleyball/Golf, and Boys Water Polo.
Thanks for your past support and we hope to chronicle a marvelous season for the local squads.
