There are three major tourneys involving area teams this week. I will update them all on this post so that it will be easier to follow all the progress in one place. Lompoc is in the Perry Ford, Cabrillo at the Birdcage, and Santa Ynez at the Gold Coast.

Girls Water Polo

Tancy Aldridge had 9 goals to out-score the Tigers by herself, but that isn't necessarily a good thing in the view of Cabrillo Head Coach Corey McIntyre. While acknowledging that "She's a very talented player and a great shooter.", and that she is "Open any time she's in the water.", he was looking ahead. "We definitely want to be spread out more, cause other teams will figure us out. They'll key on her, so we've got to make them pay with other people too."

After taking a 7-0 lead in the 1st quarter, McIntyre pulled his starters. His young backups couldn't quite maintain the pace, and the Tigers slowly pulled themselves back into contention. Tiger Head Coach Katie Hicks was pleased that her team kept struggling to "overcome adverse conditions" and "give Cabrillo a run for their money in the 2nd & 3rd quarters. We just need to learn how to play a consistent four quarters." She mentioned the 4th period because after closing to within 3 (10-7) some of the starters returned - including Aldridge. She promptly tallied three goals in 70 seconds to propel Cabrillo to the win.

"At times we can play really well", but "We just want to keep improving."

The Braves suffered their 1st loss of the nascent season, against a very good team. The Tigers controlled the ball "90% of the time.", according to one observer, who further related, "They're fast, aggressive, pass really well, and are great on corner kicks." The Tigers scored twice off corners in the game.

The Tigers (2-1) pounced 1st, but Lompoc got an equalizer when Evelyn Acosta fed the ball in to Alondra Pena who blasted a shot at goal. The shot was deflected, and the keeper raced to the edge of the net to keep it away from a hard-charging Maribel Anguiano. The ball, however, bounced past into the goal and the keeper crashed into the goal post, injuring her knee. It would not matter, the visitors got two more scores to ice it, and after she iced it, her knee that is, the GK said she would be OK. SLO Goals - Brady Candaele, Katrina Drake, Darla Berkefeld.

Braves run over Spartans

It was the Blue and White versus the Blue and White at Lakeview Middle School on  Monday. 

The Hoopster Braves swept the Orcutt Academy Spartans 4-0. There were no Frosh games.

Let's see. The Braves had the advantage in size, strength, speed, skill, shooting ability, experience, and several other categories. Lompoc's harassing defense caused numerous Spartans turnovers, including 17 steals. Their rebounding, they had 29, was relentless. One wonders what they could have done with more than 3 full days of practice. The Lompoc gym being used Thursday - Saturday for the Bryan Ayer Classic girls Tournament.

Actually, the lack of floor time did show up in the first quarter. Four of the Braves that hit the floor for the opening tip-off were playing football until last week, and their timing and coordination weren't quite 'there' yet. Many of their 11 turnovers came early and they missed entirely too many scoring opportunities, including quite a few lay-ups.

Although Lompoc was able to forge an early lead, is was, ironically, when the subs started coming in that the Big Blue Machine started scything through the Spartans. As it turned out, the subs saw a lot of action - all 14 players spent time on the floor, and 12 of them scored.

The Braves' early advantage was chopped to a single point (7-6) midway through the 1st period, but Lompoc started to settle down and find their rhythm, hitting a pair of buckets to push the score to 11-6 at the first break. Then the roof fell in on Orcutt. The combination of inside play (Elijah Bailey's 6 points), outside play (4 players hit 3-pointers), and point guard Rafael Arellano's fast break lay-ups (8 points) were just too much for the Spartans.

The Braves scored 30 in the 2nd, and 22 in the 3rd, before completely emptying their bench in the 4th. Lompoc flirted with a 40 point margin, but never quite got to that qualifier for a running clock. The Spartans kept fighting, but sometimes it must have seemed to the Orcutt players that there were 7 or 8 Braves on the court.

In the last minute of the game, Lompoc's final player, erstwhile defensive tackle Maurice Kirby, entered the contest. The Spartans had the ball, and had scoring chances but couldn't convert them. They did claim some rebounds to keep the ball until late. A errant pass, however, found a Lompoc guard who drove down court, but was cut off by the weary defense. He then flipped the ball back to Kirby who was trailing on the play. And, as the Braves' JV squad chanted "Rock-y, Rock-y" from the stands, Kirby floated a 14 foot jumper at the basket slightly ahead of the final buzzer. Nothing but net. It was that kind of night.

Darrell Black thought his young Spartans "played like their age", but believes that they will get better with experience. Well, experience and the return of point guard Jaylen Holford. What he did like was the play of sophomore Manny Mangayo who led the team with 12 points.

Perhaps the least impressed individual in the building was Lompoc Head Coach Joe Smith who simply remarked "I learned that we could be a good team with a lot more hard work."

This one was even worse. If it had been a prize fight it would have been stopped early in the first round, as it was the running clock was instituted after the initial bucket of the 3rd quarter, a Lompoc 2, put the Braves up by 40 points. The Spartans had NO offensive mojo working. They scored 3 field goals in the game, including 1 3-pointer and were 1-5 from the line.

Lompoc had 4 players who scored as many as the Spartans - Darius Dunson 12, Ruben Venegas 9, Gabe Simon 8, and Bertrand "B.J." Taylor. All 12 players who suited up played, and 11 of them scored. Orcutt scorers were Javier Sanchez 3, Isaiah Oropeza 3, Vincent Benevides 2. Of the three, only Oropeza was a starter.

Northern Santa Barbara County Athletic Round Table

at Giovanni's Pizza, Orcutt, CA

A number of folks apparently avoided the photo booth this week. One of those was 1st time participant Christina Jenne, a 14 year old St Joseph freshman who won 3 CA state Middle School age group wrestling championships in a 22 day period last spring. She took 1st place over the weekend at the Oxnard tournament and is also a budding MMA sensation. Luckily, she happened to be between me and the podium and was "in the shot".




The Athletes of the Week were:

 Tatiana Dunlop (St Joseph Basketball) for her exemplary performance at the Marin Catholic LadyCat Classic. The Knights were only 1-2 at the tourney, but Dunlop was named to the All-Tournament Team.

 Clay Teixera  (St Joseph Wrestling) who was the Upper Division MVP at the Pete Duca Invitational at Nipomo. He won the 160 lb class with 2 pins, a 15-2 decision, and a 5-2 win over the #1 seed in the final.

Soccer - Get Your Krispy Kreme Donuts

Although overshadowed a bit by a mess of tournaments in other sports, this was a pretty good week for the local Soccer squads. First up, the Lompoc Braves ladies - who went 2-0 against good competition. 

Those same gals will be out fundraising on Friday, 7 December 2012, by selling Krispy Kreme Donuts in front of Dr. T's Family Chiropractic during the Lompoc Annual Children’s Christmas Season Parade. The cost will be $10 per dozen. Dr. T, a good friend of the TAP-TV football broadcasts, is located at 518 N "H" St., just a-ways south of College Avenue.

The Cabrillo Conquistadors Boys lost a 2-1 decision in SLO to the Tigers. San Luis scored in the 1st half on a ball the the GK deflected, but not quite enough. Cabrillo answered for a 1-1 halftime tie, but gave up a 2nd half goal on a penalty kick.

The Conquistadores prevailed at home on a cold, blustery, and somewhat damp day. The locals struck first when Eduardo Cardenas netted a misplayed throw-in. Kenny Benton gave them a 2-0 lead, with an assist from Eze Cadena.

Righetti then pulled within a goal when Edwin Franco put one home, but Cabrillo got an insurance score from Adrian Diaz to ice it. Keaton Wink had 5 saves for the Warriors.

Head Coach James Baca liked the result, and was heartened by the defense, but still thinks the team has a lot of work to do.
