The somewhat experienced Braves were able to beat the very inexperienced visitors from Cambria on a very pleasant afternoon at Lompoc High School. The hosts won handily in most of the singles sets, but were challenged more in the doubles. The 1-3 matchup took over a hour to complete, but Lopez & Cortez pulled it out by taking the tiebreaker 7-3.

CIF Polls
A significant number of area squads were ranked in Monday afternoon's polls. There was even another delayed shuffle at the top of the DIII (Northern) football rankings.
The Newbury Park Warriors (5-1) fell to #3 despite winning last Friday, mostly on the basis one would imagine, of their loss 2 weeks ago, much as Lompoc fell 2 weeks after their OT win over Nipomo.
The Lompoc Braves (6-0), though, did not regain the #1 spot they held earlier in the year. That honor went instead to the equally successful Paso Robles Bearcats (6-0).

Chyanne Thomas, Lompoc Volleyball
Chyanne was the primary force behind the Lompoc Volleyball team accomplishing two things last week that they had not done in quite a while - win at Cabrillo and take a set from Morro Bay. Both matches went 4 sets.
Tuesday, in front of a vociferous crowd up on the hill, she simply refused to let the Braves lose, making big play after big play. Her 24 kills,17 digs, and 3 aces were almost secondary to her leadership. Thursday, she helped rally the team after a slow start to take a set and force close margins in two others, tallying 20 kills, 13 digs, and 3 aces.

Was the Player of the Game in the Braves 42-22 showdown victory over Righetti on Friday to remain undefeated (6-0). He excelled in all three phases of the game. On offense he carried 21 times for 213 yards and 3 TD's, on defense he had nearly a dozen tackles, and was a key member of the special teams return squads..

One of the more AMAZING plays you'll see on a football field!! #22 RB Austin Hayes goes airborne but is stopped short of the goalline, lands on an opposing player, and bounces up. He is grabbed by another defender, but reaches the ball across to #52 James Graham, an Offensive Lineman, who powers his way in for the TD!

Mark Morales, a junior DB for the Braves, had an excellent game with 2 interceptions and several other passes defensed. He was the runner-up for the Player of the Game award, behind Derrick Portis who had 213 yards and 3 TDs.

Duffy Wins ALDS Opener

After being sent to the bullpen to start this series, Lompoc resident and Cabrillo HS graduate Danny Duffy was the winning pitcher of Thursday night's ALDS Game 1.
The 7th of 8 hurlers used by the Kansas City Royals in a 3-2 victory over the Angels at Anaheim Stadium, he pitched the 10th inning of what was then a 2-2 tie. Mike Moustakis then hit a homer in the top of 11th to give the visitors the lead, and closer Greg Holland nailed down the game in the bottom half for the save.
In his inning of work, Duffy faced a formidable contingent of a Angel hitters, After allowing a single to left by Kole Calhoun, he was able to get MVP front-runner Mike Trout to ground into a force at 2nd base. The force out being made possible, in part, by Duffy's ability to keep Calhoun from stealing the base. After Trout's grounder to short, Duffy retired Albert Puhols on a pop-up to 1st, and struck out Howie Kendrick.
Duffy faced 4 batters, throwing 19 pitches (13 strikes). He struck out 1, walked none, allowed 1 hit and no runs. It was his 1st ever MLB playoff action. He had a 2.53 ERA in just under 150 innings in the regular season.
The starter, Jason Vargas, went a strong 6 innings - surrendering a pair of runs on 3 hits and a couple of walks. Nori Aoki keyed a fine defense performance by KC with two outstanding catches in the 6th & 7th.
