Things are heating up !!!

Several Santa Ynez fans were able to beat the heat Wednesday by hanging out at the pool, as the Pirates battled Cabrillo for LPL supremacy.

Cabrillo also had its supporters.

The heat had the runners at the LPL Midseason All-Duals dropping like flies, and the Lompoc and Cabrillo girls golf teams, who were going head-to-head, dragging themselves around the VCC course. So we're going to the pool. The COLAC to be precise. Where the Cabrillo Conquistadors were looking to position themselves for another LPL Championship.

Boys Water Polo

Santa Ynez @ Cabrillo

We have seen the future and he is .... but I'm getting ahead of myself. The Pirates came to the valley looking to take advantage of a rare opportunity, Cabrillo was hoping to stop them. With the graduation of all-time leading scorer Wes Hain and a host of other veteran players, Cabrillo is both young (only 3 seniors) and inexperienced this year. Santa Ynez is attempting to exploit that window of opportunity by seizing the LPL title. To do that they had to beat the Conqs. Well, beat them in League play - they defeated them 14-8 in a tournament earlier this year. Two years ago they lost twice. Last year they split two games. This year ?

Cabrillo would not go down without a fight. The Conqs struck first on a goal by Marcus Thiele at the 3:22 mark of the initial period. Bryce Small retaliated with a goal 21 seconds later and started a run for the Pirates. From the 4:58 mark in the 2nd quarter, Santa Ynez ran off 4 consecutive goals - by Travis Frohlich, Dustin Alker, Simon Haws, and Small again. The Cabrillo drought continued until #11, Garrett Darling drilled a shot home with 42 seconds left in the half.

Darling also opened the 3rd period scoring at 4:37 to make it interesting at 5-3 in favor of the Pirates. Actually, # 11 scored three goals in a row. Unfortunately, for the locals it wasn't Darling - but SY's Elijah Ozimec. Darling's goal was the last one managed by Cabrillo, but the Pirates received additional goals from Frohlich, Alker, and Small (2), to make the final 10-3.

The future ? That would be Santa Ynez's Adam "The Wall" Taylor. The sophomore goalie was almost perfect in the second half. For the game, he had 13 blocks and 3 steals while stopping man-down situations four times, including one in which he stopped an initial shot and two rebound shots in a matter of seconds. Small came up big hitting on all four of his shots and Ozimec had 3 assists and 3 steals.

Junior Varsity

The Cabrillo JV was coming off a trip to the AG novice tournament were they went 3-1 (including wins over Lompoc & the AG 'B' team)- the loss was to the AG 'A's, and found themselves in a dogfight.

Cabrillo opened the scoring, SY answered. Cabrillo scored again - so did the Pirates. The Pirates took the lead, Cabrillo answered. The Conqs score two more, and the Pirates cut it to 5-4 - 42 seconds before the big break.

In the second half there were 5 ties and neither team ever established more than a 1 goal lead. Cabrillo scored with just over a minute left to even it up and at the end of regulation it was still tied at 9 apiece. This resulted in a two-part over-time period - three minutes for the teams going each direction. Cabrillo dominated the first portion with a barrage of 4 goals, and held on as SY scored two unanswered in the second half for a 13-11 win.

Keenan Andrews had 5 goals for Cabrillo, including the one that tied it at the end of regulation, and the fourth one in OT. Aaron Hay, Nick Hines, and Emmett Hill each had two goals (both of Hill's in OT), and Simon Reep & Christopher Naughton each had one. Scorers for the Pirates were 2-meter Jake Catariano (4), Collin Deats (3), Lucas Lastra (2), Max Pappas, and Dorian Hanley.

Cross-Country

LPL All-Duals Midseason Meet

The meet was run. The results are still out. And the scoring is in doubt. [Story] Here is what we do know: 1.) The course & weather came out on top as numerous runners wilted in the heat. They are all apparently OK. 2.) Cabrillo's boys are about as good as Morro Bay #3 (Div IV) ranked squad. 3.) The Templeton girls (#6 Div IV) are really good, and Morro Bay isn't bad either.

Local individual leaders: Ashley Fabing LHS 3rd (20:48), Eddie Tovar CHS 4th (17:02), Joel Martin LHS 11th, Chelsea Sidhu CHS 20th.

Girls Golf

Lompoc @ Cabrillo

The Braves fell 299- 330 to the Conquistadors at the Village Country Club on Wednesday. The heat was also a factor in this contest. [Story]

Individual scores included Medalist Morgan Salm (45) of Cabrillo, her teammate Mariah Hall (58), and the Braves leader Kaleigh Goethe (also 58).

Club Swimming

Tsunami at the SMSC Columbus Invitational [under 18]

The Club based out of the COLAC is growing at a rapid pace, and the number of team competitors is similarly expanding - allowing participation in relay races for the first time in years.

The swimmers compete according to gender in age groups (8U, 10U, 11-12, 13+ for this meet). The lower age groups are also split into four divisions (Open, Blue, Red, White) by compententcy level. Since for most of the locals it was their first ever swim meet, almost all of them swam in the White division. Relays are based, in part, on the total age of the team.

PB=Personal Best

Paola Hernandez finally found some competition - the 13 year-old is now swimming against competitors as much as 4-5 years older. How'd she do?

A first (50 Free-off PB by 1/2 a second), three 2nds (100 Back-PB by almost a second, 100Fly- PB by 1/2 a second, 200 IM-PB by over 4 seconds), and four 3rds (100 Free- PB by 1/2 a second, 200 Free- PB by a second, 100 Brst-PB by over 2 seconds, 200 Fly- 1st time at distance). She anchored the 200 Free relay team, finishing 6th of 22 teams (with the fastest split on the team by 6 seconds), and led off the 4th-place 200 Medley Relay squad with a sub- 30 second split. Well, some competition. She does seem to be doing OK.

Cabrillo wins Black & Blue Week Opener: Tennis,XC,Water Polo,& Volleyball

The Cabrillo Conquistadors and the Lompoc Braves will meet in head-to-head match-ups three times this week. Tuesday was Tennis at Lompoc, Wednesday is Girls Golf at Cabrillo (VCC), and Thursday is Volleyball. To the tete-a-tete contests, you can also add the Wednesday LPL All-Duals Meet (at Templeton), and the LPL Girls Golf Tournament #4 (at Morro Bay) to the compendium of competitions between the two valley schools this week.



LPL Girls Tennis

The LPL begins its second pass through the round-robin schedule with two teams ranked in the Division IV Top 10 - Santa Ynez (4th) & St. Joe (6th). [Ranks]

The Pirates won 6 points in singles, and 5 in doubles. While they freely substituted, Santa Ynez Exchange student Nathalia Chaddad [Brazil] played and won all three sets.

Ane McPike lost just one singles game, but this match was won in doubles where the Knights only surrendered two games. Duos Shelby Brooks / Sammy White & Christine Noe / Whitney Bouquet each swept three sets (all 6-0). While Kayla Zimmer / Victoria Thomas won both their sets 6-0.

Cabrillo has been forced off their home courts since the LUSD began work on them about the time school started. They practice around the pits at CHS, but play matches at the Ryon Park courts - which could use some work as well. Lompoc made this one closer than their earlier meeting but couldn't quite pick up additional sets. There were no subs in this one because Lompoc doesn't really have them, and Cabrillo didn't have the transportation to bring any.

LPL Boys Water Polo

Lompoc [2-1 LPL] 12 @ Santa Maria 6
The Braves "stole" the win at the Paul Nelson Aquatic Center pool, with four players having five or more steals. The combination of Kyle Pickles & Daniel Dunaetz was deadly - each had 5 goals, 5 steals, and several ejections drawn. Kyle Thumm keyed the defense with 6 blocks in goal, and ball thieves Alex Stone (6) and Robert Macias (5) helped play keep-away.
Both teams are back in action this weekend at the Santa Maria Tournament, with two games apiece on both Friday and Saturday. On Friday, Lompoc faces East Covis (3pm) & Santa Maria (5 pm). The Saints follow that at 7 pm with a match vs. Bullard [Fresno]. Saturdays games are determined by Friday's results.

Cabrillo hosts Santa Ynez at the COLAC on Wednesday (2:40 pm), for LPL supremacy. Also on Wednesday St. Joseph hosts Morro Bay at Allan Hancock College at 3:30 pm.

Lompoc, which has been knocking on the door all season, finally just busted down the door with a win at Santa Maria's Wilson Gym on Tuesday.
The Braves 25-22, 22-25, 25-13, 25-21 nailbiter was the first varsity win in nearly two years. As usual, Cameron Lizarraga [12 kills, 4 blocks] controlled the net with the assistance of Erica Slikker [6 kills, 1 block].

Santa Ynez (12-2, 6-0 LPL) 3, Cabrillo 0
The Pirates breezed through the Conqs in straight games - 25-13, 25-17, 25-15. Jessica Farley (11 kills), Tiffany Lee (8 kills), and Kaylee Long (5 aces) were leaders for the locals. Kelsey Soos was again spectacular - 9 kills, 32 assists, 6 aces. Aly Squires had 9 kills and five aces, Rachael Szyller had 8 kills in 9 attempts, and Caitlyn Wright (9 kills, 5 digs, 5 aces, 0 hitting errors) was everywhere for the Pirates. Skyler Jacobsen contributed 4 digs. The Pirates host San Marcos in a non-league match on Thursday.

JV Coach Jennifer Smith writes

Aww, it finally happened. . . we lost. . . in 2 (17-25 and 24-26 – we almost had them in this one!) to Santa Ynez. The girls played a great defensive game by holding Santa Ynez to a total of 4 aces!! (Last season, we allowed them 25 aces in 3 games!) Kristina Goodchild had 10 digs, 2 aces and 2 kills, Cathy Lynes had 8 digs and Kiley Shae Aldridge had 12 assists.

Morro Bay (4-4, 3-2 LPL) traveled to Templeton

St. Joseph (5-1 LPL) hosted Laguna Blanca (7-1) in a non-league contest and was decisively beaten 3-0 (25-16, 25-14, 25-17). Jackie Harvey (14 kills), Katie Borden (10 kills), and Annie Varni (8 kills, 5 blocks) led the Owls. -- el stato

Alumni Do It Big

Vai Taua scored four TD's for the Nevada (Reno) Wolfpack, but they lost a shootout at home with New Mexico St 48-45.

Vai Taua
RB Vai Taua rushed 20 times for 188 yards (long=48 yds) and scored a career-best four touchdowns. Two came on the ground (8yd, 3yd). He also caught 5 passes for 49 yards and two TD's. One was a 5 yarder to put the Wolfpack up 31-28, and on another he took a 16-yard screen pass from Colin Kaepernick in from 16 yards out to tie the score at 38 with 51 seconds left in the third quarter.
The Nevada Wolf Pack (3-3, 1-1 WAC) had 507 yards in total offense,and the Aggies (3-2 overall, 1-0 WAC), had 513, in a see-saw game that had nine lead changes and three ties.
New Mexico State controlled the ball for the final 3:51 to run out the clock,
and was 3-3 on fourth down conversions in the game.[Story]

Lydell Sargeant
The Penn State defense delivered another superb performance and the offense showed up as the Nittany Lions crushed the then #24 ranked Wisconsin Badgers 44-7. Coming off the bench, CB Lydell Sargeant had two third period interceptions, with 55 return yards, that helped turn a 24-7 lead into a blowout. He also had two solo tackles and a pass breakup.

Penn State improved to 7-0 overall and 3-0 in the Big Ten and is now ranked 3rd in the country. The Nittany Lions have won 38 of its last 47 games. Penn State will be seeking an 8-0 start for the first time since 1999, in a Big Ten clash with Michigan on Saturday, October 18.
ESPN will nationally televise Penn State's 89th Homecoming game. It is their only home game between Sept. 26 and Nov. 15th. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m. in a sold out Beaver Stadium. The Nittany Lions will be playing on ESPN for the third consecutive week. [Story]

Boo Jackson
The Ohio football team marched into Dix Stadium and spoiled the Golden Flashes Homecoming party 26-19. Barrett Way had 4 FG's and the Bobcats rushed for two touchdowns.

Ohio's Boo Jackson ended the day 16-26-1for 203 yards passing. Running the ball he had 2 net yards and a fumble on 7 carries, but scored the first points of the game on a nine yard TD run. He was sacked twice for a loss of 26 yards.

Ohio will take the field again on Tuesday, Oct. 21 at the Temple Owls at 8 p.m. ET. The contest at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia can be seen on ESPN2.[Story]

Michael Slaughter #44 [LB] / Justice Clegg #71[OL]
I don't know the state of Winona, but Winona St (4-3, 4-2 NSIC) is pretty good. They rolled the UIU Peacocks (1-6, 1-5 NSIC) 49-14 on Saturday. [Story]

"The Warriors outgained the Peacocks 598 to 380 in total offense and were much more productive on third downs. WSU converted 9 of their 12 third downs, while UIU only converted on 3 of their 14 third downs. On the day, Upper Iowa turned the ball over six times on the day... three times on downs and three times on interceptions. The Peacock defense was able to force just one Warrior turnover...".

Mike Slaughter recorded 5 solo tackles including a sack for a six yard loss. Presumably, Justice Clegg is still starting on the OL.

Upper Iowa will return to Eb Eischeid Stadium in Fayette this coming Saturday, Oct. 18. The Peacocks will host the Vikings of Augustana College in a Northern Sun Conference Southern Division game. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Robert Sherman #82 [WR]
The Atherton based Menlo College Oaks (2-4, 1-1 Nwst. Conf.) celebrated Homecoming with their second win of the season, a 35-28 defeat of Puget Sound at Conner Athletic Field. Robert Sherman, a freshman wideout from Lompoc, who saw some action earlier in the season, did not play in this one.

Allan Hancock College
The Bulldogs have half a dozen Lompoc valley players on the squad which fell 34-17 to Bakersfield on Saturday. The Renegades have been struggling some this year - guess who they broke through against ? [Story]

Sophomore #21 Tim Ochoa has 2 interceptions, with returns of 26 & 76 yards. Ochoa also has 15 tackles (9 solo), including at least 3 TFL (-20 yards) and two pass break-ups. #3 Joseph Scott (who snagged a pick versus SBCC), has 10 tackles (3 solo), 1 Tackle For Loss (5 yds) and a pass break-up.

Greg Watson (#27) has 2 tackles and two pass break-ups in three games. No Info so far on Casey Belluz (#40), Jake Farley (#61), or Joshua Blair (#97).

Soccer
The McIntosh / Murray Bowl took place on Friday (10 Oct) at Chico State

Chico St. [6-7-2, 2-5-2 CCAA] lost twice - at home. They were a nice 5-1-2 at home, and 1-4-0 away, have now lost 5 of their last 7 games.
The first one (The MM Bowl) was a 3-1 loss to CalSt DH. They led most of the game, before giving up three unanswered goals - two in the last six minutes to Jessica Murphy.[Story]
The second was a 3-0 loss to the UC San Diego Tritons (11-2-1, 8-2-0 CCAA). [Story] A starting Wildcat defender in all 15 games, senior Katie McIntosh has two assists on the season, but none since a 3-2 loss to St. Martins on September 4th.

Amanda Murray
The Cal St Dominguez Hills [10-5, 8-2 CCAA South] womens soccer team, now winners in 7 straight matches, used two road wins to improve to 9-5-0.
The first was a 3-1 win over Chico State. Three second half goals, two by frosh Jessica Murphy, did in the Wildcats. [Story]
Game 2, in Turlock versus CSU Stanislaus, was another come - from - behind affair. This time junior Natalie Moreno scored twice in the second half. [Story]
The Toros remain in a deadlock with UC San Diego atop the CCAA South Division at 8-2-0.

Amanda, a junior transfer has not played in the last several games.

AHC - Men
The Allan Hancock College men's soccer team dropped their last two Western State Conference games, 0-2 to Moorpark (4 Oct) and 4-1 to Citrus (10 Oct). Hancock (4-9, 1-3 WSC) . The Bulldogs will host LA Mission College on Tuesday, Oct. 14 and travel to Oxnarnd College on Friday, 17 Oct. - both games at 4:00 p.m. Juan Benivides (LHS) and Massimo Beeson (CHS) play for the Bulldogs, but no individual information is currently available.

Softball

Courney Dosa #22
The recent Lompoc grad is the lone non-Missourrian on the Jefferson JC womens softball squad. Last year the Vikings were 35-15 (18-2 in conference). They were scheduled to begin play on August 30th, but no results are currrently available. Dosa is listed a Pitcher / Infielder.

Make it three in a row, Cal Poly recently finished second for the third consecutive tournament. This time it was at the inaugural Coast BMW-Coast Nissan Inter- collegiate, hosted by the Mustangs at the Monarch Dunes Golf Course in Nipomo. Cal-Poly fell to UC Irvine, but beat the comparable teams among the six women’s squads. Julia, who tied for 8th overall, carded a 237 (82, 78, and 77 ) -just two strokes back of third), and was second for the Mustangs.

The Mustang men’s team returns to action Oct. 27-28 in the Herb Wimberley Intercollegiate hosted by New Mexico State in Las Cruces, N.M., while the women’s squad will play Oct. 27-29 in the Kent Youel Invitational in Honolulu, Hawaii. Obviously, the women won that match-up.

Braves Lose Thriller to SLO {JV/Frosh Update}

ONE MORE HEART BREAK

Once more a heartbreak loss to San Luis Obispo. It has been like this since 1996 when the Braves last defeated the Tigers. But they’ve always been close.

That was the fate of the Lompoc Braves again Friday night as they suffered their first defeat of the season 42-33 at Frank Holt Field in SLO.

A botched PAT and a batted and intercepted pass run back for a TD were the difference after the Braves trailed by only two at 35-33 with barely more than two minutes to play.

The Tiger fans were chewing their nails and the Brave side was rocking as Ryan Bower connected with Scott Aguailar to close to that two-point margin.

SLO came back and appeared prepared to ice the matter but the Braves turned them back on a interception by Rudy Yruegas in the end zone at 2:05, so Tiger fans gasped and Brave fans rocked even more.

But on the very first play from scrimmage a Bower pass was deflected into the air and SLO’s David Nord grabbed it and ran 25 yards to the end zone. Aagggh…………..

The Braves had never led but they refused to back off.

Jay McElearney galvanized the SLO homecoming crowd when he took the opening kickoff deep into Lompoc territory, then scored from the 23. Only 23 seconds had disappeared from the clock.

The Braves responded with a sustained drive culminating in a Frankie Martinez plunge from two yards out but the PAT set-up was fumbled and the kick was wide—7-6.

SLO seemed to put the game away in the second quarter on a McElearney 5-yard score and a pass to him from quarterback David Schultz that covered 32.

Lompoc drove back but a Rich Hirzel pass into the end zone was intercepted with 45 seconds remaining in the half.

A suddenly reenergized Brave team made sure that the 21-6 halftime score did not stand long after intermission. Ryan Bower came in at QB and floated a pass out to the left side to Bobby Collins who romped 35 yards to pay dirt. A two-point PAT failed but Collins quickly scored again, this on a 24-yard run and with Drew Sapp’s PAT the Braves were back in contention at 21-19.

An interception gave SLO a short field to McElearney so he took the ball to the one from where Schultz crossed to expand the Tiger lead to 28-19 but Collins electrified the Lompoc fans with a 92-yard return of the kickoff tightroping the left sideline in front of the LHS rooters. Sapp’s PAT made it 28-26 and it was the Tiger fans’ turn to get nervous again.

Another Lompoc mistake, a fumble at their own 20 after forcing a Tiger punt, gave SLO another short field and McElearney crossed from the four – 35-26.

But Lompoc responded yet again on that Bower-to-Aguailar bomb perfectly placed in the end zone and it was 35-33. The gruesome finale was in sight.

The contest was the Pac-7 league opener for the two teams. SLO is now 3-2 for the season, Lompoc 4-1. The league’s other four teams open play next weekend.

The last time Lompoc played at Holt Field, in 2006, the blues forced overtime. This is the same field where they played that classic three-overtime game in 1997. And lost.

The Braves venture to Paso Robles next Friday. The Bearcats stopped El Diamante of Visalia Thursday 35-14.

The Los Padres League

In the Los Padres League Cabrillo [Story] held off Santa Ynez 28-20 to move to 2-1, Pioneer Valley dumped Nipomo 20-0, St. Joseph crushed Santa Maria 42-0, and Morro Bay led Templeton 23-14 in the third quarter. In a non-league contest Arroyo Grande came from behind to down San Marcos 34-21.

Cabrillo JV

The Conquistadors scored first on a 5yd TD Run by Twenty Vasquez, but Santa Ynez scored the rest of the points - winning 12-6. Jalen Davenport blocked a punt, but Coach Bob Radford stated that a familiar problem this season showed up again - "We struggled to move the ball consistently". He did, however commend the play of OT Sal Esparza, OG Romero Carlos, FB Nolan Williams, and LB Sixto Solis.

Lompoc JV

The Brave played at the SLO Tigers on Thursday. Down 27 at the half they rallied and made it competitive before falling 36-21. Michael Haynes scored twice, Marcel Blow picked up a first down on a fake punt and recovered an onside kick, while Evan Aguilar played well at QB and especially at Strong Safety.

Cabrillo Frosh Vs. Santa Ynez [Th]

The Conquistadors kicked off to the Pirates, who drove the field and scored. The Conqs were stopped on the ensuing drive, but after giving up the pigskin got it right back courtesy of a fumble. T. J. Babouda scored and it was 7-6 Santa Ynez at the end of the first period. Unfortunately for the locals, another drive for a score and a 'pick-6' TD led to a 19-6 deficit at the halftime break. Neither team did much in the second half, but the Pirates did push across another score to make the final 26-6.

Coach Steve Haskins stated that "they bottled us up on the ground", but neither team functioned well in that dimension. Cabrillo mustered just 67 yards rushing, but Santa Ynez only had 57. The difference was that the Pirates had two receivers over 6' whom they were able hit despite good coverage. They total 153 yards through the air, and Cabrillo had zero yards passing while throwing 4 interceptions.

Lompoc Frosh @ SLO [Th]
The Braves needed shorter halves in this one. The SLO Tigers connected on a long pass with less than 30 seconds to play in the first half to go up 16-7 at half time, then scored 2 TD's and a safety in the last 6 minutes of the fourth quarter to win 30-7. Coach Paul Terrones was pleased with the teams' effort this week after a lack-luster performance in the previous game. Aaron Kucharski scored the TD for Lompoc.

Cabrillo freshman golf ace Morgan Salm enjoys taking along some of her friends to the course. She shot a 46 to lead the Conquistadors to a third place finish.




Girls Volleyball
Lompoc (0-7, 0-4 LPL) fell 2-3 versus Templeton

Where do I even begin ? Well, first off - if you weren't at Paisola Pavillion Thursday night - You missed a WHALE of a sporting event !! The Eagles eventually prevailed over the Braves 25-19, 22-25, 25-21, 23-25, 15-9.

Lompoc came into this match not having won even a game this year. But it's even bigger than that - reportedly they haven't won 2 games in a match since a couple of victories in October. October of 2006. Yup, a 30-some match losing streak. They haven't played a five-game match in recent memory. The pattern has been to play game one tough, fall off a bit in game 2, and make it look good against the subs in game 3. No more of that - on this night they fought!

Game 1 was a typical affair. Templeton jumped out to an early lead (4-1), Lompoc closed the gap in the middle, even taking a 2-point lead on a Jackie Towsend ace. But Kristie Humphries served 5 straight points before Lompoc forced a side-out. The Braves then gave it right back on a service error. The Eagles stretched a few points into a 20-14 lead, and Lompoc was never able to catch up.

Game 2 was almost a mirror of the first one. Lompoc took an early 6-1 lead and held off several surges. Up 17-10 the Braves saw their advantage whittled down to a 20-19 edge after a service error. The teams exchanged mistakes for a few points then Cameron Lizarraga pounded down a kill to win it.

Game 3 reverted to the old ways. The Braves quickly found themselves behind 8-1. They were still down seven at 12-19. Erica Slikker at the line after a Stepanie Olsen tip-in. She had two aces and a kill and served six consecutive winners to get within one (18-19). But Templeton called a timeout, won the next point and six of the last nine.

Lompoc lost the first two points of Game 4, came back and tied at 4, and again at 7. Townsend's serving helped them to a 12-7 lead, but the Eagles again carved it down, eventually using two aces to take a 17-15 lead of their own. Lompoc tied it at 19, but in the process lost senior setter Olsen to an arm/shoulder injury. Then they lost 3 straight points. The Eagles had a service error, after a point - so did Lompoc (21-23). An Eagles hitting error cut the margin to one, put Jackie T at the line, and during the break in the action Stephanie Olsen re-entered the game from the training room. Olsen had an immediate effect, putting in a tip-over to tie it at 23, Townsend had an ace, and Slikker slammed home a kill for the win.

In the tie-breaker the Eagles pushed out to 4-1 and 7-2 leads as several Lompoc problems that had been in absent most of the night, suddenly recurred. The Braves cut the margin to 9-6, but were outscored 6-2 down the stretch. Perhaps some nerves were involved, but as one observer pointed out - no-one on the team was used to playing with the match on the line.


Coach Sevilla huddles them up between games four and five.


Cameron Lizarraga had 20 kills, 10 blocks, and 2 aces. Erika Slikker followed with eight kills and five aces, and Brandy Machado added five kills.
The defensive effort by everybody was outstanding.
Junior Varsity/Frosh
The JV lost in straight sets (25-15, 25-17). Two team members summed it up -"we just didn't play well".

The freshmen fell to Templeton 25-17, 25-20 in a possibly competitive match doomed by Lompoc errors. Last week the frosh dropped three single set matches at the Morro Bay Tournament to Mission Prep, Nipomo, and St. Joseph.


Cabrillo lost 3-0 @ Morro Bay (4-6, 3-2 LPL)
The Pirates swept Cabrillo 25-18, 25-14, 26-24. Ciara Ramos led the Pirates with 10 kills, and Sara Hoversten added eight kills and four aces.

Junior Varsity/Frosh
The JV [8-2, 5-0 LPL] team beat Morro Bay 2-0 (25-17, 25-16). Felicia Bowen recorded 4 kills, Kristina Goodchild had 9 digs and 3 aces, and Summer Galvin and Colby Edman had 6 digs apiece.

Tuesday's JV
The squad improved to 4-0 inthe LPL with a 25-12, 22-25, 15-9 win over the St. Joseph Knights. The team really stepped it up at line - missing only 4 serves all night. Caitlyn Harvey Morgan had 4 aces, 5 digs, and a couple of kills, while Cathy Lynes provided consistant serving and what Coach Jennifer Smith described as "awesome defense".

LPL Tournament #3
[Lompoc hosts at La Purisima CC]

At a windy La Purisima Golf Course on Thursday the Santa Ynez Pirates improved their scores by 8 strokes (237) while the St Joe Knights dropped 11 strokes (256) behind the 245 pace both teams set last week at Vandenberg CC. The Knights were jumped by the 'bear' - the afternoon wind on a course that can quickly turn a hole from a 4 to 10. The SY girls managed to deal with it, the Knights did not. Every St. Joe player (except Christy Mahan) was a least two strokes higher than last weeks scores, 5 of the 6 Pirates improved theirs.

Cabrillo (284) was third, but the real contest was for the 4th- 6th spots. The tight finishes by Morro Bay (331), Lompoc (332), and Santa Maria (334) made sure the official scorers were double and triple checking the results.

After alternating Medalist honors the last two weeks, Maddison "Maddie" Shean (SY) & Danielle "Budger" Gilaspy (SJ) apparently decided to tie - both shot 42. Sarah Sanger (SY) took third with a 44 - her best tournament score so far. Only six players shot under 50.

Cabrillo's Paige Hurlbut dropped her score 14 strokes from two weeks ago, Lompoc's Ali Wilson recorded a personal best 65, and the Braves Anna Clark earned her first varsity tournament start due to her play on Monday.

Girls LPL Tennis
The first round of home and home duals ended with Santa Ynez out front 6-0.

Lompoc (1-5 LPL) won 15-3 @ Santa Maria
The Braves finally broke into the LPL win column with a 15 - 3 romp over the Saints on a day they were without #1 singles player Paty Martinez who was sick. As a result, Renee Xiong (3-6, 6-0, 6-2), and Sameeha Husayn (6-2, 6-2, 6-1) each moved up a spot and played well. Korina Esqueda (0-6, 1-6, 6-4) moved to #3 singles and picked up a point.

This match, however, was won by the doubles units who all swept - dominating 54-6 in games. Both the Dana Campitelli / Maria Morales and Elicity Fabing / Kaitlyn Munoz teams swept without losing a game, while Nicole Nomany / Jessica Cosio swept 6-0, 6-2, 6-4.

The Santa Maria points were earned by Belgian exchange student Astrid Schiffers (6-3, 6-0) and Glenda Polancos (6-1).

Junior Varsity
The Braves won the match at the very windy Dave Bickmore Courts 10-8 after the #3 doubles team pulled out a 7-6 (7-5) tiebreaker win. The match was made significantly closer by the presence of German exchange student Vanessa Opoku who won all three of her sets at #3 singles. Emily Tremblay (6-3, 6-4, 2-6), Gold Vang (2-6, 6-1, 1-6), and Katelyn Lee (6-0, 3-6, 2-6) each earned at least one singles point for the Braves.

The #1 doubles unit Ashley Branson / Azucena Villalobos swept (6-1, 6-0, 6-1),. The #2 squad Serena Zuares / Julie Abrego split two sets (3-6, 6-3), before giving way to subs Miriam Lopez / Jessica Smith who lost a close one (5-7).

The set of the match occurred with the score tied 8-8, with both one singles and one doubles set remaining. The doubles contest was eventually won by Coach Jim Steffey's favorite new players Isabel Anguiano & Rosa Carreno, who were down early in the match but who were able to pull it out. They won in the first round (6-1), and fell behind 4-0 against the Saints #1 team but fought back before falling 6-4.

Cabrillo (4-2 LPL) fell 10-8 @ Santa Ynez (6-0 LPL)
The Pirates won seven times in doubles and picked up another three while freely substituting in singles. Cabrillo singles players Julie Leyva (2-1), Ashley Pennewell (2-1), and Nikki Piertsegaele (2-1) each won two sets. But the Pirate doubles dominators Lauren Swift / Emily Ineman swept their three sets, Erica Schroeder / Alisa Silsbee went 2-0, and Katie Manser / Brittany Feighner were 2-1. The Cabrillo doubles pairs were: Brissa Montes / Jessica Montes (1-2), Lanae Magers/ Katy Carlson (0-3), Jocelyn Walton / Elke Piertsegaele (1-2).

Morro Bay (3-5, 2-4 LPL) lost 11-7 @ Templeton (4-6, 3-3 LPL)
This was yet another of those singles vs. doubles battles. Morro Bay took seven of nine singles sets, but the Eagles were able to sweep in doubles.

Natalie Hoage / Taylor Eisemann (6-1, 6-0 and 6-0) led the Templeton doubles effort.

St. Joseph 18, Coast Union 0
Frankie Eszes blanked three opponents in a 6-0, 6-0, 6-0 sweep, and the Knights (7-2) swept this non-league match at St. Joseph.Kayla Zimmer and Victoria Thomas swept their two doubles sets 6-0, 6-0. Ane McPike swept two singles sets by the same score.

Boys Water Polo
Cabrillo 7 lost @ San Marcos 9
The Conquistadors had a big third quarter to get themselves back in the contest, scoring 4 goals to pull within a point - but it wasn't enough. The Royals scored 3 in the first, and 2 in each following period, while Cabrillo only scored one in each quarter except the 3rd. For the Conqs: Darling (4), Chard (2), & Thiele scored, and Keeling had 7 saves. San Marcos goalkeeper Travis Johnson dominated the match with 14 saves. Boysel & Gostow had 3 goals each, and Kilpatrick, Lisea ,& Rivera had 1 apiece.

Paso Robles 8 won @ Santa Ynez 7
In this non-league contest, Neil Shapiro's fourth goal of the game was the charm. With two seconds left, his cross-cage shot off a pass sank the Pirates . Santa Ynez led 5-3 at the big break, but was out-scored 3-0 in the 3rd period. Small (3), Ozimec (3), and Riva had goals, and Taylor had 5 saves for the Pirates. Santa Ynez is now 13-5 (2-0 LPL).

Cross-country
