Thursday Results - with just a bit of controversy !!

BASEBALL

At Lompoc
Lompoc [5-1] 14, Nipomo [3-1] 3 [Story] [Stats]
Ryan Bower only allowed 3 hits - while the Braves scored more than that many runs in an inning - twice. After an eight run first inning, they added another four in the fourth. Bower went 5 innings, gave up 3 runs (2 earned), and had a 8-4 strike-out to walk advantage. Reliever Daniel Dunaetz cleaned up the last two with no runs, no hits, 4 K's, and 2 walks.

Even though they had help (7 walks, 1 batter HBP), the bats certainly showed up in this one. At least 8 Braves had a notable day at the plate.

Hirzel: 1-3, double, 2 RBI, 2 runs scored
Bower: 2-2, 2 RBI
Tatigue: 2-3, 2 RBI, run scored
Aguailar: 3-3, 1 RBI
Aguilar: RBI, 2 runs scored, 2 walks
Mallory: 2-2, RBI
Sapp: 1-1, double, RBI, run scored
Berryman: 2-2, double, RBI, 2 runs scored

For the Titans, Ryan McNeil went 1 for 3 (double, 2 RBI), but also took the loss on the mound. Sean Perskey was 1-for-3 and scored two runs.

Freshmen: St Joseph 3, Lompoc 2
The Braves utilised a "team effort" to surrender a three run lead to the Knights, but fought back in the bottom of the seventh. They had pushed a run across to cut the margin to one, and had the bases loaded with one out. The batter then clipped a high fastball into the air - unfortunately, high into the air just in front of home plate. Even more unfortunately, the Ump didn't call the infield fly rule into effect, forcing the runner at third into movement.

The catcher dropped the fly ball about three feet up the third base line, and about two feet inside the line. The ball rolled into foul territory, and the runner came home. The reciever attepted to tag the runner - then threw to first, where the batter beat the throw. Coach Rubio, coaching at third, pointed at the runner who had crossed the plate and said to the Ump, "He's safe - right !". The Arbiter replied - "Yes". Game tied, bases loaded - right ?

Nope. The St. Joe coach came boiling out out onto the field, as his kids were trying to involve the runner who had already crossed the plate in a 'pickle', protesting a) that the IF rule required the batter to be called out, and b) that the runner at home had been tagged out. Eventual result ? The runner was called out at home (out #2), due to a mystery tag, the runner at first was safe, the next batter grounded out, and the Knights won 3-2. Maybe someone wanted to go home and check their brackets in the NCAA tourney.

Several spectators/parents were quite upset, and did not behave with the greatest decorum. Too bad really, the kids just want to play ball - and the alledged 'grown-ups' mess things up.

The game itself was pretty good, lefty Lucas Martin started on the hill, and Keldon Marmalejo threw the last 2 innings. Marmalejo also singled, so did Virlin Donelson (plus 2 walks), and Toby Contreras had a double. The squad had two batters reach base after being hit by pitches.

At Cabrillo
Cabrillo [4-2] 5, Atascadero [0-4] 3
Two out, bottom of the fourth, Sean Greathead at the plate with runners on - and, he comes through with a three-run triple. Greathead was 2-for-3 on Thursday, and Conq starter 'Big' Brian Engler (1-2) went six innings striking out five and surrendering five hits. Thomas White picked up his first save by working the seventh.

At Santa Ynez
Santa Ynez [7-1] 4, San Luis Obispo [3-1] 3
Home runs by Ty Silacci and Scott Shields were not enough for SLO, neither was outhitting Santa Ynez 8-5.

Two innings in, the Pirates were up 4-0, then held off the charging Tigers for the win. In the four-run second inning, Zach DeMarcus doubled to score run number three, then Nicho Delavalle singled to bring in DeMarcus with run #4.

The Tigers got three runs back in the fourth inning off starter Todd Whitmore, whom coach Dave Kuehn had originally planned to have only go 2-3 innings as a tuneup for the league contests next week. In the fateful fourth, there were those homers back-to-back followed by a single. Tyler Lowry then took the mound and shut down SLO the rest of the way. Evan Soliman helped keep the Pirates in the game by blocking several wild pitches and picking off a runner in the sixth.

At Morro Bay
Paso Robles [2-2] 6, Morro Bay [3-3] 1
A Zach Jones four-hitter, combined with Austin Swank's offensive output (3- 3, double) did in the "other" Pirates. The Baysters did get one extra-base hit - a Tyler Lee double.

At Templeton
Arroyo Grande [3-1] 14, @ Templeton [0-5] 1
Already up 5-0, Kyle Raubinger's double started an Arroyo Grande eruption for seven runs in the fourth inning, as they cruised to a 14-1 victory. The Eagles from the south (AG) outhit Templeton 14-2, while the northern Eagles (Templeton), made things even easier for the visitors by committing six errors.

Arroyo Grande catcher Seth Spears (3-3, all doubles, 2 RBI) led the team offensively, and Eric Simon (2-3 3 RBI) also made significant contributions.

Three AG pitchers - Kyle Pearson, Forrest Pankey and Eric Simon combined on a two-hitter. Kyle Peterson collected the win, and Pankey relieved him in the fifth inning.

Templeton's Ricky Hun took the loss, Dan Wheeler hit smacked a triple, and Brendan Pinkerton hit safely in his only at-bat.

SOFTBALL

At Cabrillo
Cabrillo [7-0] 3, Righetti [2-5] 0
Amanda Leake three-hit the Warriors en route to a complete game shutout. Cabrillo only had five hits themselves - but one of them was Adrianna Segura's two-run homer. Alexa Garcia went five innings for Righetti, before Hayley Davis took over in the circle, and struck out five.

At St. Joseph (St. Louis de Montfort)
Game 1: St. Joseph [4-3] 8, Paso Robles [5-4] 1;
Kailey Snyder pitched a five-hit complete game, the Bearcats had seven errors, and the Knights blew this one open with a six run sixth inning.
Alexa Sanders doubled and Caitlyn Voss tripled.

Game 2: St. Joseph [5-3] 5, Paso Robles [5-5] 3
The Bearcats played better in this one - committing only two errors, but so did Alexa Sanders. She doubled twice, and Caitlin Voss doubled for St. Joseph.

The Knights points came from solo wins by singles Jake Eszes, Hayes Dunn and Jose Franco and by #2 doubles Taylor Monrey / Matt Hiltner.

Templeton 13, Santa Maria 5
The Eagles victory was keyed by two sweeps, Jeff Eisemann (6-2, 6-2, 6-4) in singles, and doubles team Sam Rubin and Ben Rubin ( 6-1, 6-1, 6-1).

Water Polo Awards, Scores, All-Star Hoops, Dosa Update

Rachel Nelson

To absolutely no-one's surprise the LPL announced that Cabrillo senior Rachel Nelson had been named the girls water polo Most Valuble Player for the 2009 season. Also to no-ones surprise, the All-LPL group looks a lot like the Cabrillo roster (8 players named) - several other locals were also named to the various squads.

In addition, the hoops battles are not yet finished - the annual game between competitors from SLO County & northern Santa Barbara County remains to be contested. Matches invoving locals in both the boys and girls games.

Today we also take a peek, at the season so far for Courtney Dosa [LHS] playing JC ball in Missourri.

In the last nine days the Cabrillo Conquistadors softball squad has played five games against the Santa Barbara schools (Santa Barara [2], Dos Pueblos, San Marcos, and even Bishop Diego). The result - five wins by a 48-2 run margin. That would seem to make Cabrillo the Santa Barbara City Champions, wouldn't it ?

Cabrillo [6-0] 9, San Marcos 1
Sophomore lefty Kiley Shae Aldridge [4-0] pitched a complete game, allowing only 4 hits while striking out 10. The Conquistadors, on the other hand pounded out 13 hits. Shy'Ann Morrow, Kelcie Jo Pecyna and Adrianna Segura all had two hits, and 2 RBI's apiece. Morrow's hits were both doubles.
Gabi Palacios decided three was her number cranking out three singles and swiping three bases.

Michael Coe
CHS grad Michael Coe has added a title to go along with the bronze and silver medals he won last week - All-American. He was also named the 2009 indoor season Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Athlete of the Year, in part for his performance last weekend.

Friday night, at the NCAA Indoor National Championships hosted by Texas A & M University in College Station, Coe’s 3:57.4 1,600m anchor leg helped his Cal distance medley relay team to a third place finish (9:30.31). They were just .80 off Oregon's winning pace, and only.08 behind second place Arkansas.

The sophomore redshirt topped that on Saturday, finishing second (7:54.4) to Oregon's Galen Rupp (7:38.9) in the men’s open 3,000 meters. Rupp was a 2008 Olympian in the 10,000 meters.

Coe's finishes earned him his first two college All-American honors, in the conclusion to the indoor season. The outdoor season will start in late April.

Jordan Hasay
Arroyo Grande resident and Mission Prep senior Jordan Hasay didn't set the national record Sunday at the Nike Indoor Nationals in Boston, but she did win her first ever indoor race and first race this year. She won the girls seeded two mile in 10:10.89 against a quality field. The runner-up was fellow Footlocker cross country national finalist Shelby Greany of Suffern, N.Y. (10:24.11). The runner-up to Hasay at the Footlocker nationals, Ashley Brasovan of Wellington, Fla., was fifth (10:31.38).

Although she didn't threaten Melody Fairchild’s prep two mile indoor national record of 9:55.92 she did win a national caliber race for the eighth time in her high school career. Hasay won her second Footlocker national title last December. Hasay’s next race will be the 1600 at the San Luis Obispo County Meet March 28.

Is this the last High School sports season in the Lompoc Valley ?

The Lompoc Unified School District is facing a severe lack of cash. The situation was already developing due to falling enrollment and the continual difficulty the state legislature has with basic math, but has been exacerbated by the economic mess. A mess which looks to be getting worse.
In addition, the City of Lompoc is looking at a 5.7 million dollar deficit for the upcoming budget year. The City has taken some serious body blows financially, especially in terms of sales taxes. A number of businesses have closed in town because of mis-management / malfeasance by headquarters outfits outside of the area despite the profitability of the local stores.

The upshot is that both entities are looking to down-size and sports is one of the most likely areas for that to happen.
The city sports reductions, unlike most of the rest of the budget, are fairly predictable - increased use fees for facilities, deferred park maintenance, reduction of Park & Rec activities with higher participation fees for those that remain, etc. . Primarily, the groups who will feel the pinch are the "large" organized sports communities like AYSO, Babe Ruth/Little League, and LGSA.

Much more tricky is the situation facing the schools. Part of the problem is that the top management of the district is in flux - there is an Interim Superintendent of Schools (Marilyn Corey), an Interim Assistant Superintendent (Gary Mortimer) on the business / operations side of the house, and the other Assistant Superintendent [Education Services] (Tanya Opfermann) received a 'pink slip' around the beginning of the month. Also two of the five members of the Board of Education are new, having been elected last November.

The continuing decline in enrollment, more than 200 students / year, for the last several years, already had some folks talking about the need to close more schools, perhaps even a high school. And no, not Maple. Another factor involved in the equation, is the fact that VAFB has been working to clear away all the activities outside the cantonment gate, leading to some thought that maybe VMS (now 7-8th grades) might close with Cabrillo becoming a 7-12 full (Junior/Senior) High School - perhaps even going to a year-round schedule.

In any event, the already tight athletic budgets in the district have, by recent Board decision, been reduced by 30%. The Athletic programs are also effected by cuts in other areas - transportation (travel availability & cost), printing (programs, tickets), administrative staff, and more. Deeper reductions may, and probably will, come. Indeed the travel question has prompted some to suggest a revisit of the proposed CIF re-alignment now working its way through the system.

The question is where to cut.

Among the suggestions / ideas heard floating through the ether are:

1) Eliminate frosh and / or JV teams.
2) Eliminate the seventh period class for sports teams.
3) Pay to play.
4) Reduce team roster sizes to bare minimums.
5) Eliminate certain low-revenue, high cost (especially insurance/ equipment) sports.
6) Eliminate "low-participation" sports.
7) Reduce or eliminate coaching stipends.
8) Make more teams pay for their own transportation, and/or eliminate overnight road trips or trips beyond a certain mileage.
9) Consolidate the high schools, or consolidate the sports programs {LomBrillo BrOnqs, anyone ?}.
10) Have each high school 'specialize' in several sports, with the right of students from the other school to participate on the teams (similar to some of the Academy programs).
11) Eliminate the school sports programs altogether, at least at the elementary and middle school levels.
12)Fund-raise, Fund-raise, FUND-RAISE !!!!!! [A concept made much more difficult in the current economy].

In any event, the best spectator 'sport' this spring might be watching the budget 'acrobatics'. The BoE usually meets on every other Tuesday, and the City Council will hold a major budgeting session on March 31st.

Anyway, that's how I see it --- el stato

Saturday Scores

Softball

Lompoc
There is a pattern here - and not a good one. Win one BIG at home on Friday (15-0 over SLO last weekend, 22-2 over Coast Union this weekend), and lose on Saturday at the Suzanne Manlet Tournament in Simi Valley. Granted, last week it was only once, a 5-0 loss to the hosts, to go along with a 7-0 victory against Palmdale. But this time the Braves were felled twice - first by Oak Park 6-1, then 9-6 by Dos Pueblos.

Game 1: Lompoc got their run in the top of the first inning, but Oak Park rallied for 5 in the bottom of the second and tacked on another on the 5th.
Game 2: The Braves scored 3-2-1 in the fourth through sixth, but gave up a big inning - the 6 run sixth. Along with 2 in the third and one in the bottom of the eighth.

Cabrillo, Santa Maria, & Santa Ynez were in action at the Cabrillo Tournament [Story].

Baseball

Cabrillo split a couple of one-run games with Carpenteria - winning 9-8, then dropping the second 3-2.

Lompoc Tennis, LPL Honors (Part 1), etc.

Joel Martin, playing #3 singles for the Braves, waits for the ball to drop - in or out ?

Lompoc Boys Tennis

Will the last one out of Dave Bickmore Courts, please close & lock the gates ?

Loretta Jensen's guys are in the middle of a hectic week. The schedule originally had Dunn School coming to town last week, with Coast Union arriving on Tuesday. The CU match was an error on the program, and wind, rain, and the Flu postponed the Dunn match-up to Wednesday this week.

The group was rather surprised then on Tuesday, when the Pioneer Valley team showed up claiming that they were scheduled to play. Sure enough, it was on the Panthers schedule. So Coach Jensen transformed the planned afternoon practice into gameday. The match started about half an hour 'late', but was completed satisfactorily - a 13-5 Lompoc win. They followed that up with an 11-7 victory over the Dunn Earwigs, with Dave Bickmore, long-time LHS coach and teacher in attendance.

The real problem for the Braves is the fact that they open league play against defending LPL Champs, and perennial powerhouse, Santa Ynez on Thursday with a varsity squad is vanishing at a rate that would astonish even Alfred Hitchcock.

Even before the start of the season, the roster had already taken a hit - #1 singles player Alex Jensen had back surgery and is on limited duty (some doubles action). Several more players had to take a seat over the last week for various reasons, and two JV players were called up Wednesday. The plan was to have them on the sidelines as substitutes, but as it turned out both had to be used and Lompoc still forfeited a third round match becase of injury.

Losses prior to the match against Dunn the losses had scrambled the line-up, with long time doubles players like Joel Martin and Kyle Thumm having to step in at singles in the last few matches. Neither had played match singles in quite some time - "years, probably" according to Martin.

On Wednesday, the doubles took some hits as well. Jesus Abrego suffered an elbow injury in the first round, and Kyle Thumm, who was playing with Alex Jensen while his usual partner, Joel Martin, was at #3 Singles, re-aggravated an injury, and had to be replaced for the 3rd round.

After that set began, Cooper Barrick, a doubles player the last few seasons, but at #1 singles on Wednesday, finished his 2nd round set and reported that he was experiencing problems from a back injury he sustained on Tuesday. The team was forced to forfeit his 3rd round set because no one else was available.

The Braves still pulled out the victory - based on a 5-1 1st round. They swept the doubles competition, but only won 2 of 7 singles matches. Singles, of course, being where Santa Ynez is the strongest this year. So the questions are -1) "Who does Lompoc get to play singles on Thursday ?", 2)"Can they win enough in doubles to offset the expected problems in singles and keep the match competitive ?", 3) "Can they get everybody back to the school from the 'South Pacific' rehearsal in time ?", and 4)"Will having Dave Bickmore stop by his namesake help them any ?". --- el stato

In the Islands & Around the League

Joel Smith (right) of Lompoc receiving accolades with some of his teammates.

Chaminade University completed its fifth consecutive winning mens basketball season with a record of 15-12 (7-5 Pac-West Conference). Sandwiched around a really nice middle, were an atrocious start (1-6) and 3 game slide going into the finale. Silverswords senior Joel Smith [LHS], a 6-4, 210 lb. guard, was not going to let that streak be extended into his last collegiate game.

After early losses to North Carolina, Alabama, and Indiana, the big problem the Silverswords had, was dealing two local opponents - BYU-Hawaii and UH-Hilo. They never did solve Conference champ BYU, losing all four times they played, but they had one victory over Hilo. They had split two games in February, a 2 point loss and a 13 point win, but took the McCabe Gym floor against the Vulcans harboring memories of a 98-82 shellacking at the same location just four days earlier.

Joel Smith was not going to lose - he unleashed a barrage of 'threes' and scored a game high 32 points (second to his season & team high 32 points) in the 68-63 win. His seven 3-pointers were more than the team had in 10 of its 27 games. The win secured a tie with Hilo (15-12, 7-5) for 3rd place in the Conference race. For his performance he was named to the PAC - West Conference Weekly Honor Roll -- again. During the season he was named to the Honor Roll 5 times and Player of the week once.

As evidenced by the honors, his contributions to the team, were not a one shot deal. He started 26 of the 27 games at guard, and finished first on the team in Field Goal Attempts, Field Goals Made, 3 Point Goal Attempts, 3 Point Goals Made, Points, Point Average, Steals, Free Throws Made, and Blocked Shots. He was second in Rebounds, Defensive Rebounds, and Minutes, and third in Offensive Rebounds and Assists.

He led the team in scoring 7 times (including 2 of the 3 times a player scored over 30 pts. in a game), rebounding 4 times, assists 5 times, steals 10 times, and an astounding 9 times led the team in blocked shots --- as A GUARD.
