Football Playoffs 2015 - Update 1 (Corrected)

The Braves-Bearcats match-up [Story] was one of 'best' contests in the 1st round of the CIF-SS Ford Championships. KPEG announcer Greg Ratcliffe was just a bit tense in the 2nd half, especially when reference was made to the 2002 1st rounder between Lompoc and a Chauncey Washington led South Torrance Spartan squad.

Washington (6-1, 210, Sr) had 25 carries for 335 yards and 4TDs along with 3 receptions for another 100 yards and two scores that evening, but facing a 2-point conversion to tie the game with just over 3 minutes remaining the Spartans elected to attempt a pass to someone else. It was broken up, and Lompoc held on to win 42-40 en route to the 1st of back-to-back Northwestern Division X Championships.

The cause of such recollections was an outstanding 1st half performance by Paso Robles RB Christian Erickson (6-0, 215) The junior had 196 yards rushing on 15 carries in the 1st half despite dealing with a heavily taped hand that was injured 3 weeks ago.

The Braves slowed him a bit after the break (37-329, 3TD Total). However, when the Bearcats scored with 5:03 left in the 4th to narrow the margin to a single point (35-34), no-one was surprised that the Paso staff elected to go for two, but many were shocked that they tried to throw the ball instead of giving it to Erickson. The pass was caught, but stopped short of the end zone.

The game ended with the Braves deep in Bearcat territory still nursing a 1 point lead, after a Paso Robles fumble.

Neither team completed a pass in the 1st half - Lompoc attempted none, and the lone Bearcat effort was a Hail Mary attempt on the final play of the session that was intercepted by Michael Taylor - leaving the game knotted at 21 apiece.

The Braves running game was equally as potent, led by the triumvirate of Torey Sims (18-204, 2 TD), Toa Taua (19-140, 2TD), and Chris Green. Green had been a game-time decision due to a shoulder injury. Sims tweaked his ankle again, but stayed in the game despite limping around for a few plays.

FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS

CIF-SS Football Playoffs

Lompoc will host Paso Robles in a D3 1st round match on Friday night. But the real questions involve several highly questionable selections. For instance -

What the heck happened to Santa Ynez? The 7-3 (1-3 LPL #4) Pirates were not selected as an at-large team for the Northern (III) Division competition. Here's who was chosen:

Highland  4-6 (4-3, Golden #4)
Newbury Park 6-4 (1-2, Camino #3)
Paso Robles 5-5 (2-2, Pac-5 #3)
Pioneer Valley 4-6 (2-2, Los Padres #3)
Royal 4-6 (0-3, Camino #4)

The only explanations I can think of were that it either came down to a PV or SY decision (with PV winning the head-to-head) or SY did not submit a bid. I have no problem with Paso or the Panther pair (NP/PV) being given preference, but the idea that both Highland and Royal were selected ahead of the Pirates is ludicrous.

Santa Barbara was similarly shafted in the Western Division. The Dons 6-4 (2-2 Channel) record being deemed insufficient while all 4 Canyon teams, including Agoura [1-9, 1-2] and Simi Valley [3-7,1-2] made the field. The #4 team in the Canyon was Oak Park [7-3, 1-2].

The Braves boys drop a rain-shortened soccer match to the Dons, The Saints hoopsters

Boys Soccer

Santa Barbara at Lompoc  [Non-League]

It started to sprinkle intermittently shortly after 3 p.m., the JV game started at 3:30 and it really began to rain around 4 p.m. . The weather continued to deteriorate with gusty winds, and cold increasing throughout the evening. Eventually, with the field getting slick, the varsity contest, comenced about 5:30, was called off about 1/2 hour into the 2nd half.

Varsity

#7 [Div 1] Santa Barbara 1, Lompoc 0

The Final non-league match for both squads, was called after 65 minutes due to the weather and field conditions, but not before the visiting Dons had managed to put a crooked number on the board.

Early in the 2nd half, Adrian Gamez found Jorge Garcia-Torres near the corner 0f the 18 yard box, Torres then drilled an upper corner shot past the goalkeeper just inside the far (left) post for the only goal of the match.

The Dons back line (Carlos Hernandez, Freddy Pacheco, Alonso Salamanca, Sutter Munizich) played quite well and kept the pressure away from GK Angel Cervantes as he tallied Santa Barbara's 4th shutout of the year.

Jose Cardenas had 6 saves (including a pair of spectactular stops) for the Braves, and got some help from Defenseman Joey Jacinto who cleared a loose ball from just in front of the goal.

Dons [5-1-1]: Goal/Assist - Jorge Garcia-Torres (50th, Adrian Gamez).
Goalkeeping - Angel Cervantes (65 min, 2 saves, 2nd shutout of the season).

Braves [3-3-2]: Goal/Assist - NONE. Goalkeeping - Jose Cardenas (65 min, 6 saves).

Junior Varsity

Lompoc 0, Santa Barbara 0

In the afternoon preliminary, also mostly played in the rain, neither squad could pierce the defense. Despite a strong defensive effort in the back, the Lompoc Keeper Leo Calvo had to make a significant number of stops.
