Wes Hain Peoples Choice; Joel Keeps Winning

WES HAIN is the Lompoc Locker Room “People’s Choice” Male Athlete of the Year for 2007.

Hain overtook early leader Danny Duffy and bested him 51-15 with major leaguer Ryan Church, world-class runner Duane Solomon and Cabrillo cross-country leader Miguel Ortiz receiving a smattering of votes from among 17 nominees.

Hain voters not only voted 51 times, they included personal testimonials as well:

“Not only I but my entire family would like to vote for Wesley Hain for athlete of the year. Wesley is not only an incredibly talented athlete he is an incredible young man. As the mother of three young boys that will follow the athlete arena, I am glad that look up to someone like him. He is a very well rounded young man that will be a blessing to any team he plays on!” wrote Jill C. Hayes.

Hain broke the Cabrillo High water polo scoring record this fall, one that had stood for 20 years. He also plays a key role on the CHS basketball team. He finished third behind pitcher DUFFY and quarterback BOO JACKSON in selections by the Lompoc Locker Room Select Panel.

Tomorrow the Lompoc Locker Room "Peoples Choice" Sweepstakes winner will be announced.

Smith Keeps Winning Touch

The Washington Huskies went into Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Saturday and came from behind for a 73-65 victory over LSU that coach Lorenzo Romar called a “gut-check.”
LSU led by 14 at halftime.

Romar started the same lineup that had given him three straight previous victories —high-scoring Jon Brockman, young center Artem Wallace, and Tim Morris, Ryan Appleby and JOEL SMITH at guards. Smith played 20 minutes and did not score, but contributed three rebounds, an assist and a steal in addition to his trademark defense.

UW, now 8-4, next takes the floor Monday afternoon vs. Idaho State.

Hain Landslide Morphs to Epic Proportions

HAIN LANDSLIDE BURIES COMPETITORS

From a 14-vote margin Thursday WESLEY HAIN doubled his lead in the Lompoc Locker Room ‘Peoples Choice’ Athlete of the Year poll to an unprecedented 29 votes on Friday.

Hain now leads his closest challenger, Cabrillo golfer KELLIE GEORGE, by 44-15 with 48 hours remaining.

Hain voters not only voted, they included personal testimonials as well.

He finished third behind pitcher DANNY DUFFY and quarterback BOO JACKSON in selections by the Lompoc Locker Room Select Panel announced last week.

Hain leads in the male athlete category 44 to 11 over DUFFY, and by 44-6 over baseball’s CHRIS WHITE. Three other nominees, RYAN CHURCH, MIGUEL ORTIZ, and DUANE SOLOMON, have one vote each.

George leads in the female athlete division 15-2 over water poloists KATHRYN NELSON and SARAH UR. San Diego State polo star BECCA UR has one vote.

Coach of the Year and Team of the Year remain virtually ignored by voters. Boxing trainer ROY BACA holds a one-vote margin over Cabrillo water polo coach COREY McINTYRE by 4-3. Lompoc High baseball coach JIM ALLEN and Cabrillo cross country wizard PETER ANDERSON trail with one vote each.

Cabrillo girls water polo leads in the team category with just three votes. The Babe Ruth League Elks, Cabrillo boys cross country, and Lompoc High girls soccer have each received one vote each. Voting ends Sunday night.

Sims in Stats for Finale; Wes Hain Vote Explodes

SIMS ENDS WITH RECEPT

MATT SIMS (mug shot) completed his college football career in the first bowl game of the season Thursday night as Utah came back to take a gripping 35-32 win over Navy in the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl.

Sims was in the starting lineup at tight end and thus merited introduction by quarterback Brian Johnson who labelled him Matt “Sleepy” Sims for the ESPN audience.

Big Matt then belied the monicker with several marquee contributions and dozens of key blocks.

On Utah’s first TD drive at 8:42 of the second quarter Sims blocked a Middie linebacker to the outside which allowed UA star runner Darrell Mack to ramble directly through a hole for a 5-yard TD.

In the fourth quarter as Utah sought to expand its 28-25 lead Sims pulled in a five-yard pass to take the Utes to the 15-yardline. The catch was his second of the season after a reception of 10 yards against Louisville. During 2006 he hauled in four tosses for 62 yards including a 23-yarder.

Sims arrived at Utah after playing a season at Division II Humboldt State but decided to gamble on himself. He left Humboldt and returned to Allan Hancock for a season before winning his ride to Salt Lake City.

Utah finishes at 9-4, Navy 8-5.

WES HAIN EXPLODES

Water polo/basketball star WESLEY HAIN (pictured in action) drew a whopping 24 votes Thursday to blitz all competitors and move into a commanding lead in Lompoc Locker Room’s ‘Peoples Choice’ Athlete of the Year Awards competition.

With a total of 27 votes Hain leads not only in his Male Athlete category but also the previous overall frontrunner KELLIE GEORGE. The all-candidate totals Thursday night half way through the six-day voting period read: Hain 27, George 13, DANNY DUFFY 10.

Hain, who finished third behind Duffy and quarterback BOO JACKSON in voting by Lompoc Locker Room’s Select Panel, became Cabrillo water polo’s all-time scoring leader this fall as he led the Conquistadores to a Los Padres League title.

Among other candidates DUANE SOLOMON, USC’s 800 star and national track team member, picked up his first vote, as did BECCA UR, San Diego State water polo captain, PETER ANDERSON, Cabrillo boys cross country coach, and the LPL champion CHS boys x-c team.

In light voting for Coach of the Year boxing trainer ROY BACA slipped past water polo mentor COREY McINTYRE and into the lead.

Male Athlete: Hain 27, Duffy 10, Ryan Church 1, Miguel Ortiz 1, Duane Solomon 1
Female Athlete: George 13, Kathryn Nelson 2, Becca Ur 1, Sarah Ur 1.
Coach: Baca 3, McIntyre 2, Jim Allen 1, Peter Anderson 1

Kellie Rules; Solomon, Geoff & Jason on TV

KELLIE GEORGE, more KELLIE GEORGE, and still more KELLIE GEORGE.

KELLIE GEORGE, the founder, organizer and all-league star of the Cabrillo girls golf team, expanded her already startling lead today in Lompoc Locker Room’s “Peoples Choice Award” balloting.

From a seven-vote lead yesterday Ms. George’s admirers pushed her margin to nine over water polo’s KATHRYN NELSON. SARAH UR trails one vote behind Nelson (11-2-1). No other female athlete has even been mentioned in two days of voting.

The femme side of the gender gap has drawn the majority of interest thanks to the George avalanche.

Even DANNY DUFFY, the Cabrillo-turned-pro-hot prospect who blitzed the Select Panel’s voting, can only boast about half of what George has generated (six to Ms. George’s eleven).

Still, he leads his Male Athlete category by three votes over water polo scorer WES HAIN and by five over MLB’s RYAN CHURCH and CHS cross-country leader MIGUEL ORTIZ (6-3-1-1).

In the Team of the Year category the Cabrillo girls water polo team continues one vote ahead of Lompoc High girls soccer and the Babe Ruth League Elks.

In very slow voting for Coach of the Year, boxing trainer ROY BACA has pulled into a tie with water polo mentor COREY McINTYRE. Is this an upset brewing? Baseball’s JIM ALLEN is one vote back.

But all indications so far are that K-E-L-L-I-E G-E-O-R-G-E will be the People’s Choice star of the year--which means……….. Lompoc Locker Room needs MORE PICTURES OF KELLIE GEORGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Send votes, and photos of Kellie George, by e-mailing pressboxprod@verizon.net

Panel Picks Duffy Male Athlete of 2007; CHS Girls Polo, McIntyre, Ur, Carmona Also Named; 'Peoples Choice' Voting Opens

And the winner is....... DANNY DUFFY!!!!!

KATHRYN NELSON, SARAH UR, coach COREY McINTYRE and ASHLEY SMITH display athlete, team and coach of the year certificates which Cabrillo High girls water polo nearly swept in voting by Lompoc Locker Room's Select Panel.

DANNY DUFFY swept easily to victory in Lompoc Locker Room’s Lompoc Male Athlete of the Year poll it was announced this evening.
He was joined on Lompoc Locker Room, the TV Show by Cabrillo High girls water polo coach COREY McINTYRE, named 2007 Coach of the Year, and by ASHLEY SMITH, KATHRYN NELSON and SARAH UR, tri-captains of the CIF champion Cabrillo girls water polo team, which received Team of the Year honors.

Ur also received recognition as female Athlete of the Year though two awards were made in that category when Ur and Lompoc High soccer star JANI CARMONA finished in a tie for the top spot. Carmona, still at college in Hawaii, was not present but she was contacted by phone.

Among 13 writers, sportscasters, and sports officials Duffy, the fireballing lefthander who whiffed 127 batters for Cabrillo High, signed a lucrative third-round contract with the Kansas City Royals, and then encored with a top-of-the-charts performance in the Arizona Rookie League, far outpolled his competitors.

Duffy totaled 40 points with seven first place votes while his closest competitor, El Camino College quarterback BOO JACKSON, finished with 25 and three first place votes.

They were followed by Cabrillo swim star WES HAIN with 19 points, track star DUANE SOLOMON with 16, and a three-way tie for fifth between Cal distance runner MICHAEL COE, major league baseball outfielder RYAN CHURCH (one first place vote) and 82-year old world swim champion FRANK PIEMME (two first place votes) all with 11 points.

“This is crazy. There are some great people on that list,” Duffy said. “What an honor.” Seventeen male athletes had been nominated.

Ur, Carmona Tie

The female AOY race was the mirror opposite of the guys’ poll—four nominees finished within seven points. Seven of ten nominees received at least one first-place vote.

Ur and Carmona finished deadlocked at 29 points with two first place points apiece. Ur’s teammate KATHRYN NELSON tied with Cal Poly golfer JULIA HEATH at 22, Nelson also attracting two first-place votes. The top five were rounded out by Cabrillo golfer KELLIE GEORGE who drew 18 votes and had the largest number of first place votes with three.
KARISSA ROBERTSON, the Cabrillo and Hawaii-Hilo soccer star, Hancock cross country runner ARIANA FABING, and Hancock tennis placer ELYSHA McLAIN, also received first-place votes.

Cabrillo Girls Polo Easy Winner

The Cabrillo girls water polo team, and its coach, McIntyre, dominated voting in team and coach categories. The team doubled the vote total of the Lompoc High baseball, Los Padres League champion for the second year, and for youth football’s Lompoc Scorpions, champions of the Central Coast. The only other team to draw a vote was LHS’ girls soccer team led by Carmona. Eleven teams had been nominated.

McIntyre Doubles the Total of Nearest Competitor

McIntyre’s closest competitor was not another prep coach but boxing trainer ROY BACA who drew three votes to McIntyre’s six. Lompoc High baseball mentor JIM ALLEN drew two votes and PETER ANDERSON, Cabrillo boys cross country, and ADDIE FRANCIS, leader of league champion LHS girls soccer, one each.

In the nick of time basketball guard GEOFF WEST has been nominated in the Athlete of the Year category. West led the University of Mary Marauders in their upset win Sunday over No. 8-ranked St. Cloud State. West is the No. 2 scorer for U-M and the No. 2 in steals. Solomon Named; CHS Girl Poloists Upend SLO

DUANE SOLOMON, America’s #3 runner in the 800, has been nominated Lompoc Locker Room’s Male Athlete of the Year for 2007.
Solomon, running as a junior at USC, qualified for the nationals in Indianapolis, but that was nothing new. He had done that in 2006. At Indianapolis he was lightly regarded among the likes of three-time national champion Khadevis Robinson, college champ Nick Symonds, and emotional favorite Lopez Lomong, an African refugee. But Solomon led Lomong all the way to take third place. He was running in fourth before he overtook Jonathan Johnson, a professional sponsored by Reebok, to place third. Lomong finished fifth.

Solomon’s time was 1:45.69. It was the second fastest 800 time ever recorded by a USC Trojan. The performance qualified him for the World Championships. If the same scenario takes place next year, Solomon would become the first Lompocan to make the Olympic team since Nick Carter in the 1920’s.

Solomon joins Ryan Church, Danny Duffy, Wes Hain, Boo Jackson, Miguel Ortiz, and Matt Sims on the ballot.

YOU can nominate right now! Just e-mail your nominee to pressboxprod@verizon.net in any of four categories: Male Athlete of 2007, Female Athlete of 2007, Coach of the Year and Team of the Year. Take a look at the nominations list to date in the right-hand column below our sponsors.

The CHS Dynasty Rolls On

Coming off a CIF title last season the Cabrillo girls water polo team graduated such stars as SARAH UR, KATHRYN NELSON and ASHLEY SMITH. The Conqs were not even ranked in the preseason polls. But the black-and-gold is acting like it wants to repeat. Yesterday the Conqs faced the #4-ranked San Luis Obispo Tigers and caged them. The score was 13 to 4 (10 to 1 by half time)...and CHS was ranked #8 in their CIF Division. Keep an eye on this group!

Chris White Named; Geoff & Jason Lose to NoDak

CHRIS WHITE, who led Sacramento City College in virtually every one of baseball’s offensive statistics, and was named the MVP of his conference before being signed by the Detroit Tigers, has been nominated for Lompoc Athlete of 2007.

The centerfielder was 2007 Big 7 Conference MVP and an All-American. He batted .369 with 30 stolen bases in the regular season and helped his team to the state JC Final Four. He was picked in the 12th round by the Tigers.

White spent much of the summer with the Gulf Coast League Tigers where he caught fire at the end of the season. He was promoted to Oneonta of the New York-Penn League for the playoffs.

White joins Duane Solomon, Ryan Church, Danny Duffy, Wes Hain, Boo Jackson, Miguel Ortiz and Matt Sims on the ballot.

GEOFF (& JASON)

GEOFF WEST and the University of Mary Marauders (now wait a minute, do the virgin Mary and "the Marauders" REALLY go together?") fell Tuesday night to the University of North Dakota 74-55. West contributed six points, two rebounds and two assists in just 15 minutes of play. NoDak was up by 19 at halftime and it just got worse. JASON WEST also logged 15 minutes but did not score. The Marauders (2-4) visit Wayne State Friday night.

Joel

Saturday in Stillwater, Oklahoma JOEL SMITH showed once again that he is the Washington Huskies' man-beyond-the-arc. Joel came off the bench as the sixth man and played 31 minutes. He hit 2-of-3 from three point land, 1-for-1 inside it, and 2-for-2 from the line for 10 points. He also contributed three offensive rebounds, two assists and a steal in 31 minutes. For the season he is 11-for-16 from downtown for a blazing 69%. Unfortunately Oklahoma State won the contest easily 96-71. UW is now 4-3 with its next game on Saturday when they host Pittsburgh.

Geoff

Saturday night in Bismarck, North Dakota GEOFF WEST dished the ball around to help the Marauders of the University of Mary rake in their first conference victory of the season.

Bismarck, ND – A balanced attack featuring five players in double figures carried the University of Mary to their first Northern Sun win of the year, a 92-82 victory over Upper Iowa.
Eric Erdmann, a sophomore forward, spearheaded the Marauders attack by scoring 18 points junior center Zach Dosch came off the bench to score 14 points. Freshman guard Jordan Wilhelm also added 14 points and had three assists. Fellow guards Geoff West and Jordan Engelhardt each added 12 points. West had five assists.

Unfortunately Friday night in the conference opener Winona State was just too tough.

Bismarck, ND – The University of Mary lead was brief, but appeared to be enough to really annoy the seventh-ranked Warriors of Winona State as the Marauders fell 93-71 in the Northern Sun men’s basketball opener for both teams.
Playing in front of a standing room only crowd at the McDowell Activity Center, Eric Erdmann hit the opening bucket of the game and, after a three pointer by WSU, Geoff West responded with a three-point basket to give U-Mary a 5-3 lead. Three straight treys, running their streak to four in a row for the Warriors, quickly pushed WSU to a 12-7 lead. That lead would soon expand to a 22-point differential in the first half as Winona State outscored U-Mary 37-13 in one stretch.

The final was 93-71. After five games West is 9-for-17 (53%) from beyond the arc to lead U-M both in attempts and successes. He leads the team in minutes and ranks #2 in scoring with 9.6 per game. The Marauders are now 2-3 with the University of North Dakota coming to visit Tuesday night.

Mets’ Bloggers Trashing Omar

The New York bloggers are having a field day blasting Omar Minaya for trading “future superstar” Lastings Milledge for RYAN CHURCH and Brian Schneider. However there are a few NY fans who get the picture. Here’s one.

Good trade. I wanted to believe that Lastings was as good as advertised 3 to 4 years ago as well. Simply put, his heart isn't and never will be in the game. He called my friends car dealership and demanded a new car bc he's Lastings Milledge. They laughed. He was a can-cer in the Mets locker room. Good luck to him. If he hits 40 HR, I'll not be upset he is gone. Now, for Brian Schneider, FINALLY , we have a catcher that can friggin THROW OUT runners. It's what the Mets needed. He's a HUGE character guy. He is also known to be great with a staff. Tough as nails. Church...what are you guys missing? He's a late bloomer that has played a mere 3 years for a poor team. Seventy RBI in 2/3 of a season? That translates to 110 RBI on the Mets. Check how many runners in scoring position he had in DC LOL. He was in line for 60 friggin doubles. How many times will he be knocking home D Wright this year? Oftentimes. Solid character and fielder. Addition by subtraction even if the two DON't work out, which they will. You guys feel that Alou will play more than 80 friggin games? Not. Church needed greatly. If Lastings had ANY value in terms of landing one of the two A's pitchers...Omar would have tied him to a foul pole and not let him go anywhere…. In the words of NY's Marv Albert: YES!!!!!!!!!!!GO METS! -Lawrence

The Nationals scored 528 runs last season, the Mets 818. You can’t drive in runs when the bags are empty. If Ryan Church can drive in 70 runs for that Washington team he should drive in 90-100 for the Mets. Keep in mind he didn’t play during August. – Mr. En Fuego

Sims Starts in Regular Season Finale

Today in Provo, Utah before 64,000 fans MATT SIMS played his last regular season football game as the Utah Utes’ starting tight end. He got no receptions and BYU came back for a 17-10 victory, but Sims’ appearance in the starting lineup in his final game was a milestone for Sims and his roundabout college career.

Sims was a big part of the Lompoc High 2002 CIF championship team, playing both ways at tackle and winning all-CIF honors. He spent a season at Division II Humboldt State, then came home and sat out a year. Then he impressed at tight end at Allan Hancock, enough to win all-conference recognition and a scholarship to Utah.

Last year he played in all 13 games, with six starts. His four receptions for 62 yards led the Ute tight ends. He averaged 15.5 yards per reception. He had a catch for 23 yards at Utah State.
This year when the Utes went increasingly to a 4-wideout offense, he played in 10 of 12 games, starting in three. He caught one pass, for 10 yards, against Louisville.

Utah finishes at 8-4 with a bowl invitation likely. Last year the Utes were 7-5 at this point and received a berth in the Armed Forces Bowl in Fort Worth, Texas where they downed Tulsa.

JOEL
Friday night at Madison Square Garden in New York Washington outrebounded Syracuse but could not best the Orange on the scoreboard as the Huskies fell 91-85 in the consolation final of the NIT Season Tip Off. JOEL SMITH entered the contest as UW's sixth man. He played 15 minutes and contributed three points on a three-point shot, three rebounds and an assist but was bedeviled by five turnovers. The game marked the first contest this season in which Smith has not appeared in the starting lineup at guard. In earlier games coach Lorenzo Romar started three guards and two forwards. Friday he went with a standard two-guard set. Now 3-2, Washington hosts Long Beach State Monday night.

Church Gets Fans' Backing; More Nominations

DC fans back Church

MLB.com writer Bill Ladson called out National General Manager Jim Bowden a few weeks ago on his non-support of outfielder RYAN CHURCH (.272, 15 HR, 70 RBI). He even compared him to Yankee All-Star Paul O'Neill.

Church is pictured here in a picture by Mike Collins of Collins Photography.

The next week Nationals fans made very clear that they too support Church, and not Bowden.

In Ladson's weekly mailbag, a reader asked if general manager Jim Bowden is enamored with former Reds-

"Don't you think the real story is that Bowden is enamored with players he was responsible for bringing to the team? Ryan Church was a member of the Expos, so he doesn't get the love because Bowden doesn't get any credit for bringing him to the team. Not saying that Bowden doesn't have an eye for talent, just that he favors players who will make him look good in the eyes of the media and the ownership group. -- Swanni P., North Beach, Md.

Ladson---"Don't believe that. In fact, when Bowden took over as GM in late 2004, he looked over plenty of video of Expos players and felt Church was a superstar in the making. In fact, Bowden once compared Church to Cardinals center fielder Jim Edmonds. At the start of the 2005 season, then-manager Frank Robinson was planning to start outfielder Terrmel Sledge, but was told by Bowden to start Church instead.
I can tell you that Bowden doesn't dislike Church. I just think expectations are too high. Church is not a 30-homer, 120-RBI guy. He is a good complementary player who will likely be in a few All-Star Games before his career is over.

-0-

"The only change Church needs is in the attitude of the GM. If he's another Paul O'Neill, we shouldn't let Bowden mess it up again. You're too easy on the GM. -- Bill N., Washington, D.C.

-0-

Ladson-- "I can't tell Bowden how to do his job. The only thing I could do is criticize him. In the three years I've covered Bowden, it's very hard to get on him. I think he has done a great job.

-0-

Well, Ladson and I agree on one thing. Church will be seen in an All-Star Game or two.
