FOOTBALL

Just a quick note. STORY

Tom Goosen has decided to retire after 10 years as the Head Coach, and 30 years on the staff, at Arroyo Grande HS. The Eagles have in recent times been the season opening opponent for the Lompoc Braves and prior to that the teams faced off in the playoffs on several occasions.

During his tenure they have been a tough out, posting an 85-35 record, 5 league titles, and a 2011 CIF-SS Divisional title.

Cabrillo 87, Santa Maria 81 [Story]
[Half 40-40]

The Conqs hit enough from the field and the line (5-6 in the final 2:17) down the stretch to eke out a slim lead. Thus when a Saint 3-point attempt to tie the score at 84 with about 15 seconds remaining used all the rim and rolled out, they were able to squeeze out to a 6 point margin.

Lompoc vs Nipomo
at Nipomo HS

Varsity 6:30 PM
Nipomo 59, Lompoc 49

It took the Titans time to tally their first points - about half of the 1st Q. But Lompoc didn't do much either, scoring just a pair of buckets for a 4-0 lead. Then the Titan went on a 12-0 run and never looked back.

Nipomo was fired up, looking for their first win of the season, and revenge for a 64-62 overtime CCT tourney loss to the Braves on 3 Dec. wich constituted the Braves only win.

Meanwhile, Lompoc has been trying to put the pieces of the machine back together as it was running - attempting to re-integrate a handful of football players to the squad while dealing with several injuries.

The two most recent serious ones in the latter category are post presence Ben Odom (fractured foot - out for the season) and shooting guard Jeffrey Ray (sprained ankle).

Apparently, the universe likes to have Lompoc play PV - this was their 3rd meeting in 11 days.  The Braves beat the Panthers in the rubber match, but it was a lot harder than their 13-4 victory on the 3rd. Still, I'm sure they liked it better than the 5-4 loss they took to PV at the Santa Maria Tournament or the 19-7 thumping from Cate they received the last time out on Thursday.
