It was a really good day for Lompoc, and wasn't so bad for Cabrillo. Varsity hoops were undefeated-the Girls won 3 games, the Boys one. Lompoc soccer was 3-0-1, Cabrillo wasn't quite as good. And the there was that 7 period affair put on by the CHS varsity polo squad.
GIRLS BASKETBALL

Bryan Ayer Classic
at Bryan Ayer Court, Paisola Pavillion, Lompoc HS STORY
It was a local sweep that would have put an easy smile on the face of Coach Ayer. The Braves took a pair of games sandwiched around a Conq blowout of Pioneer Valley. The defending co-Champs of LPL each looked impressive in taking on opponents of varying ability Thursday night,
Lompoc 43, Santa Barbara 40
[SB 13,8,10,9-40 L: 13,10,12,8-43] STATS
The Braves overcame a bit of a slow start to tie it at the end of the first period, the teams then traded back and forth a few times until midway through the fourth when Lompoc took the lead and made it stick.
Braves [1-0]: Points (28% shooting, 0-3 3pt, 7-14 FT) - Cheyenne Marmalejo 13, Chavon Garrett 12, Danielle Morgan 9, Cyenna Garrett 6, Ruby Gonzalez 2, Alyssa Grossi 1.

Cabrillo vs Pioneer Valley
[PV: 2,7,4,3-16 C: 21,7,18,14-60] Stats
This one was not at close as the score would indicate. It was 27-2, when the Panthers got their 2nd bucket of the game on a nice contested layup after a mid-court steal - with 3:36 remaining in the 2nd period.
The only real worry for Cabrillo was in the 3rd when sophmore Lexi McCune took an accidental shot to face. She later returned to action.
Brittney McCune |
Conqs [1-0]: Brittney McCune 13 pts,
Lompoc 40, Pinole Valley 28
[L: 16,10,10,4-40 PV: 4,6,6,12-28]
The score is a tad misleading. PV hit their 2nd bucket with 1:20 to go in the 1st, trailing 12-4. Lompoc substituted freely throughout most of the game, and cleared the bench at the start of the 4th period leading 36-16. They were still up (40-21) with 4 minutes remaining, but Pinole scored the last 7 points of the game - mostly against freshmen and sophomores. Pinole could have done a bit better - they were 8-28 from the stripe.
Braves [2-0]: Points (19-51 2pt, 0-6 3pt, 2-7 FT, 29 rbds, 16 stls) - Danielle Morgan 16, Chavon Garrett 6, Cheyenne Marmalejo 4, Ruby Gonzalez 4, Isabelle Robles 4, Cyenna Garrett 2, Alyssa Grossi 2, Leila Richardson 2.

Cabrillo 8, Oxnard 7 [5 OT Periods]
[C: 2,2,2,0-6 + 0,1,0,0,1 = 8 O: 1,1,2,2-6 +1,0,0,0,0=7]
Oxnard was 1-1 coming into their home opener, having lost 15-10 at Malibu last week and defeating Westlake 16-12 on Tuesday. Cabrillo also fell on Tuesday - to AG 13-3. So many folks thought this one would be close - many folks were correct.
The Conqs took a 2-1 lead in the first quarter, and doubled it in the second. But the Yellowjackets kept pace with Cabrillo in the 3rd, and outscored them 2-0 in the 4th to tie it up 6-all at the end of the 28 minutes of regulation time.
And so to overtime. Water polo has a bit of a different system - two complete 5 min extra periods, switching ends between the two. If still tied, then a succession of 5 min 'sudden victory' periods occur until there is a winner.
Oxnard held the visitors scoreless for the first OT period, but the Conqs returned the favor in the 2nd half of Standard Overtime. Cabrillo finally won it with a goal early in the third extra OT period by Callie Scott.
Conqs [1-1]: Goals (8-25 shooting)- (by 3 Seniors) - Ellery Wilkie 3, Vanessa Rojas (1 steal), Maddie Stangl, (and 3 Frosh) - Mary Rhodes, Delany Scott, Callie Scott (3 steals). Goalkeeper - Rylan Scott XX saves, 5 steals.
Coach Hill should thank Mrs Scott.
