And how was your Tuesday afternoon ? |
The Fall Sports Season officially began on Tuesday afternoon with the traditional Girls Golf match between Cabrillo and Lompoc. The Braves squeezed 6 players, Special Olympics World Champion Coach Tom Garrard, and a bunch of equipment into a district vehicle and headed up the hill to the VCC. With a young and inexperienced squad, Lompoc made it close, but the Conquistadors came out on "top" - underscoring the visitors 303-314.

In golfing terminology a hacker is usually defined as someone who plays rarely, and isn't very good. On Tuesday Kendal Martin was a very different type of 'hacker' - the sick kind. As in ill; aching, weak, weary, bleary eyed, coughing, stay in bed so you can rest, sick. She 'hacked' her way around the front nine, using a whole container of tissue, whilst playing some of the finest golf of her career. It was a truly 'Brave' performance, and earned her medalist honors on the day.

Team (6 players compete, 5 score) -
Cabrillo lost several good players to graduation from their LPL Championship unit, but retained enough depth to defeat Lompoc. Coach Dave Schroeder hopes that his squad will post scores in the 50's consistently enough to retain the title, and while that didn't happen in the opener, they were good enough to win the day.
Cabrillo [303]: Baylee Gregory (12) 59, Brianna Gonzales (12) 63, Ashlyn Wiswall (10) 55, Gabi Delgado (12) 62, Kylie Moldt (11) 67, Britney McCune (11) 64.
Lompoc [314]: Kendal Martin (11) 47, Danielle Morgan (11) 58, Taylor Ronholt (10) 72, Marina Zellers (10) 71, Ruby Gonzales (10) 66, Elizabeth 'Lizzie' Hang () 72.
News Notes:
1) Lompoc has ten girls on the squad (and might add another one), but only had transport for the minimal six. Two 'veteran' players are still fighting the paperwork battle and are thus currently ineligible, another missed practice due to conflicting appointments. One result - Lizzie Hang being elevated to the varsity on just her FOURTH DAY PLAYING GOLF.
2) Cabrillo had a half dozen JV girls in action, but most only played 4 holes.
3) Among the spectators at VCC were retired Lompoc XC coaching greats Rich Zellers (L) and Jim Warrick (R).
