Cross-Country Off and Running [5-7 Sept]

There are 3 XC meets of interest this week to LPL fans and two next week. This week we had the Santa Maria City meet on the 5th, Lompoc at the Seaside Invitational (Ventura) on the 6th, Santa Maria, Nipomo & Morro Bay at the Big Ditch Invitational (AG) on the 7th.

Next week is the Lompoc Invitational (11th) & the Morro Bay Invitational (14th).

The Seaside is run down at the Ventura area state beaches and consists of 4 grade level [Sr., Jr., So., Fr.] races each for both boys & girls. Approx 40 high schools are represented in each race, with schools from Ventura & LA counties, and the Bakersfield area, among those present. There were 3 Santa Barbara County schools - Dos Pueblos, Santa Barbara, and Lompoc. Most of the schools are in Divisions 1 and 2 - Lompoc is Division 3.

There are area teams participating in two large boys water polo tournaments this weekend - one in Ventura County, the other in Santa Maria.

PIONEER VALLEY TOURNAMENT

The Tournament was divided into two sections -
  Pool Play (Friday) [Games 1-10] ( Some at Santa Maria HS) &
  Re-ordered Pool Play  (Saturday) [Games 11-20]

Games 1-10: 6 minute quarters, no timeouts, ties stand (bracket ties decided by goal differential)

CONEJO CLASSIC

The Conejo Classic, a long-established boys water polo tournament hosted by Thousand Oaks HS, takes place over two days and this year involves 39 teams in 3 divisions playing 87 games at 6 sites. Most of the teams are from Ventura and northern LA counties, with several select teams from other areas of the state. Fortunately for our purposes all 4 squads from the area, including Cabrillo, are competing in the 14 team 'Division 2'.

Cabrillo QB Brett Gregory

Friday night at Huyck turned into a flag tossing contest between the officials at the JV and Varsity games. It particularly effected the JV, but the Varsity committed additional errors, especially early, that cost them both games.

Meanwhile, at Doug Hinchen Stadium in Arroyo Grande, the Lompoc Braves Varsity ran over the Eagles, but the JV managed to make enough mistakes to come up short.

San Marcos 35, Cabrillo 14 [Story]

Cabrillo had a horrible start to the game, spent the rest of the 1st half fighting back to even, but was inconsistent offensively & unable to get off the field defensively after the halftime break. They also sprinkled enough penalties to hurt themselves.

The Conqs won the coin toss and elected to receive - it went downhill from there. A holding call negated a fine return. Cabrillo picked up an immediate first down to the 20 yard line on a nice 12 yard burst from Zach Fort, then stalled on 3 running plays. The ensuing  punt attempt was blocked, and recovered by the Royals at the one. Esteban Alfaro punched it in for a TD, with Nathan Coffee adding the first of his 5 PATs on the night. Down 7-0 10:12 remaining 1st Quarter.

Cabrillo returned the next kickoff out to just short of the 30, lost a yard on a running play, lost 5 more on an Illegal Motion penalty, but got those 5 back on a Eugene Choi end around. On 3rd down Gregory tried his 1st pass of the season, he took a quick drop, and tossed a quick swing pass to the back coming out to the right side. It bounced off his hands like a volleyball set, hung in the air briefly, and then was snatched by San Marcos DB Cameron Whitney who cruised untouched into the end zone. Coffee's kick was good. Down 14-0 9:21 remaining 1st Quarter.

The Conqs put together a 14 play drive (after a holding penalty on the kickoff), that paid off when Gregory's 5th successive completion found Nate Jostes for a 10 yard TD. Chase Dalton tacked on the EP and Cabrillo seemed to be back in it. The Royals drove into Cabrillo territory, but fumbled - Josh Larson recovering for the Conqs.

The running game again stalled, but Gregory hit a pair of passes to move the chains. This included a 35 yarder to Steven French who was sprung down the sideline by an excellent Lucas Derflinger block. After Choi picked 8 yards, 3 more runs resulted in turning the ball over on downs. Each team then punted (Cabrillo's a 3 & out). A defensive stand stopped San Marcos on 4th down just inside their territory with 1:03 remaining in the half.

A 3 yard loss on a running play and an incompletion set up a big 3rd down. A pass to Fort for 11 left them a yard short, but French powered through traffic for 5 more on 4th down. Gregory the threw as pretty a pass as you are ever likely to see at this level to Derflinger, who reeled it in as he crossed the goalline. Daltton's kick brought them even, and the Royals took a knee to run out the 1st half clock.

Unfortunately, that was as good as it would get for the Conqs. The Royals came out in the 2nd half determined to run the ball - and they did. They scored on an 11 play drive - assisted by a Late Hit penalty after a stop that would have set up a 4th down. Cabrillo went 3 & out - they would only run 15 plays (for 47 yds) from scrimmage in the 2nd half.

San Marcos missed a FG at the end of a 14 play drive and another 15 yard markoff, but by then the Conq defense was worn out. The offense mustered a 1st down, after another penalty, but turned it over on downs.

The Royals would score twice more with less than 6 minutes remaining - utilizing big plays on a short field both times. Lucas Lamoutte [6-2,210] went 29 yards almost untouched up the middle for the first, then QB Wesley Ghan-Gibson hit Alfaro for 36 yards. Cabrillo turned the ball over on downs again between those two possessions, and fumbled on the second play of the one after. San Marcos picked up 2 1st downs on gashing runs by Lamoutte & Alfaro, then Ghan-Gibson took a knee three times to erase the clock.

San Marcos 13, Cabrillo 12

Both teams score on their initial possessions, Nick Davis doing the honors for Cabrillo. Chris Glaze next touched paydirt midway through the second to put the Conqs up 12-6. The Royals, however,  would manage the topper a few minutes into the 4th quarter on a 10 yard TD pass AND hit the PAT. Cabrillo had vast amounts of yardage negated by penalties, including an offensive pass interference call in the end zone.

Lompoc 28, Arroyo Grande 16 [Story]

Cabrillo transfer Gage Buckley's premiere for the Braves was't  spectacular, but it didn't need to be. The vaunted Lompoc ground game just brought in the new year's models and continued rolling. The 2012 edition produced 3807 yards on the ground (7.05 ypc) and had 6 players with over 250 yards rushing on the season. Four graduated, with 2 getting D1 scholarships (Lavon Coleman - Washington, Nikko Hayes - Idaho State).

Then one of the two returners, Austin Hayes, broke his thumb. So, next man up - Derrick Portis (24-150, TD) joined returner A.J. Flores (30-182, TD) in playing keep away against the Eagles who compiled 62 yards on 15 carries. Lompoc totaled 60 rushing attempts for 380 yards.

AG QB Matt Gutierrez was 14-17, 2TD and 180 yards to keep the Eagles alive, but also threw a pick. Gage Buckley only completed 2-8 passes - tossing a 35 yard strike to Greg Mitchell, and dumping one off to Portis for 7 yards and a TD. Buckley also rambled 31 yards for a score of his own.

Javier De La Cueva made all 4 of his PAT attempts for Lompoc, while Eagles kicker Cole Ramey was 1-2, but added a 24 yard FG to close the scoring in the 3rd period.

Arroyo Grande 21, Lompoc 14

The Braves poor execution cost them early, and although they improved "Significantly" in the 2nd half, they were unable to overcome the early deficit. According to Braves JV Head Coach Jake Brown, QB Brad Osborn played well, Chris Greene was a major force on defense, and Teddy Perry played well on both sides of the ball.

Lompoc scored TD's on a 40 yard run down the right side by Isaac Jordan, and a goal-line plunge by Andreas Guaddarama. Oscar Ramirez connected on both extra point attempts.
