Newport Harbor Holiday Cup (Fri/Sat)
at Newport Harbor HS/Corona del Mar HS
16 Teams (Incdg 7 of the Orange County Top 10)
Co-Hosts - Newport Harbor & Corona del Mar. The hosts haven't won recently [Sailors 2005,Sea Kings 2008], but CdM (3-0) is the prohibitive favorite. The Sea Queens are ranked #1 in CIF-SS Div 1 and are the #1 Seed in Group B. They also have some very talented transfers from Greece, who will not be eligible until after January 1st. The defending CIF-SS Division 1 Champion Newport Harbor Sailors are currently ranked #3 in CIF-SS Division 1.
Newport Harbor JV - features U.S. youth team goalie Carlee Kapana (So), who didn't beat out Cleo Harrington (Jr) for the varsity spot. They won the varsity Lil’ Pickle Showdown (Costa Mesa) defeating Beckman 14-6 in the finals.
Foothill (5-1) - 2011 Tournament Winner
Santa Barbara - 2011 Tournament Runner-up, #5 CIF-SS Division 1.
Palos Verdes - Ranked #2, CIF-SS Division 3.
Wilson (LB) - Ranked #9, CIF-SS Division 2.

4:00 p.m. [QF]: Foothill 9, Laguna Beach 5
[QF] (NH): Newport Harbor 11 Santa Margarita 6
A slow start by the Eagles, a great NH counter-attack, and a tremendous effort by Rachel Whitelegge (So.) at both ends blew the Sailors into the Semis. Whitelegge helped hold Eagles star senior, Cal signee, and US Junior Team center, Emily Loughlin in check.
Sailors [5-2]: Carly Christian 3 goals; Elissia Schilling 3 goals (2 4Q); Rachel Whitelegge 5 stls (all at 2M- 2 1Q), 3assts; Avery Peterson 3 stls (2 at center).
Eagles [7-1]: Haley Wan; Emily Loughlin 1 goal, 5 exclusions drawn. Power-play 2-6.
[QF] : Corona del Mar 13, Dos Pueblos 6
[CdM: 4,4,3,2 - 13 DP: 0,4,1,1 - 6]
Twice already this season these two squads had faced off, with CdM taking both, but both times the Chargers had staged big comebacks to make it close, including a 1 (11-10) point margin in the season opener at DP.
The Sea Queens again got off to a fast start, leading 4-0 at the end of the 1st quarter on strikes by Cassidy Papa (Sr.) 2, Maddie Musselman (So.) off Papa's assist, and Ally McCormick (Sr.). They Chargers kept things even in the 2nd, however, and trailed at halftime by the same 4 goal (8-4) margin.
Part of the difficulty had been the need to send multiple players the way of DP's, and soon to be Stanford's, Jamie Neushul. The senior had 6 goals to lead the charge in the DP comeback in November, but in the 2nd half on Saturday, Genevieve Weed (Sr.) was able to keep her under control with reduced help.
In the 3rd period, CdM struck first, but Dos Pueblos answered at 4:43 with a Shannon Cleary power-play goal to re-establish the 4 goal lead. The Sea Queens responded with their own man-up goals by Papa and McCormick to lead 11-5 after 3 quarters.
Corona again used the counterattack to score their final goal of the game. After a DP man advantage was stopped, GK Weed hit Papa with the outlet pass, and Papa stuck it in the net for the 13-6 final.
Sea Queens [5-0]: Cassidy Papa 6 goals; Ally McCormick 3 goals, 4 stls; Genevieve Weed 2 goals, 4 stls, 3 assts; Maddie Musselman 2 goals, 2 stls (While in foul trouble). Erica Weed 1 save.
Chargers [2-3]: Shannon Cleary 3 goals, 5 exclusions drawn; Jordan Williams 2 goals; Ari St. Oegger 1 goal; Jamie Neushul was shut out.
Saturday, 29 December 2012
Palos Verdes 7, Edison 5 [2OT]
PV Sea Kings [6-6]: Ellie D'Ambra 3 goals, Kate Roan 2 goals, Carly Radov 21 saves.
09:30 a.m. : Laguna Beach 9, Dos Pueblos 6
[LB: 4,2,2,1 - 9 DP: 1,1,2,2 - 6]
A big 4-1 1st quarter for the Beach did in DP.
Chargers [3-3]: Jamie Neushul 4 goals, Britten Vilander 8 saves.
10:40 a.m. [NH] (Semi #1): Santa Barbara 7, Newport Harbor 6
UCLA signee Kelsey O’Brien hit the game-winner at 4:03 of 4th period, just 28 seconds after Heidi Fults power-play goal tied it for Newport Harbor. O'Brien hit three goals in the Dons 4-0 run to take a 6-4 lead with a smidgen under three minutes remaining in the third.
Dons [6-3]: Kelsey O’Brien 4 goals; Maddie Trabucco 12. Team: 6 field blocks.
11:45 a.m.[NH] (Semi #2): Foothill 9, Corona del Mar 7
The Sea Kings did not score in the final 5:58, in no small part due to Snyder's theatrics in goal. Coming out of a timeout, at 3:58 of the 4th period, Snyder stopped a perimeter power-play ploy by Weed to pretct an 8-7 advantage. Foothill's Cana Manzella then drew an exclusion that set up Katy Schneider's third power-play goal of the 2nd half. Up 9-7, Snyder made another power-play save at 2:25 of the 4th.
Knights [8-1]: Kenzi Snyder (Fr.) 9 saves (3 4Q)
Sea Queens [5-2]: Genevieve Weed 4 goals.
[Conso Final - 9th] (CdM): Newport Harbor JV 7, Palos Verdes 6 [4OT]
PV Sea Kings [6-7]: Caroline D'Ambra 2 goals; Ellie D'Ambra 2 goals. Carly Radov 22 saves.
[7th Place]: Dos Pueblos 6, Wilson (Long Beach) 5
Down 3-1 at halftime, DP staged one of their now familiar 2nd half comebacks to take a 6-4 lead in the middle of the 4th.
Chargers [4-3]: Jamie Neushul 4goals; Shannon Cleary 2 goals, 3 steals, 2 exclusions drawn. Britten Vilander 8 saves.
2:00 p.m. [5th Place]: Santa Margarita 13, Laguna Beach 8
SM hit the 1st 4 goals of the game and never looked back.
Eagles : Emily Loughlin 7 goals.
[3rd Place]: Newport Harbor 7, Corona del Mar 4
The co-hosts met one game before they wanted to, in a rematch of last weeks CdM's win. This time the Sea Queens were shut out for the final 7:56.
Sailors [6-3]: Christina O'Beck three goals; Elissia Schilling three goals. Cleo Harrington 7saves.

Sailors [6-3]: Christina O'Beck three goals; Elissia Schilling three goals. Cleo Harrington 7saves.
4:05 p.m. [Final]: Foothill 8, Santa Barbara 4
Santa Barbara couldn't beat the press, scoring just 1 goal at even strenth. Except for a penalty with 23 ticks left on the clock the Dons were held scoreless for the last 16:04 of the game. One factor to the Foothill press was that they played 15 girls, including a 5 for 5 substitution midway through the 4th. Power play - SB 2-6, F 4-6.
Dons [6-4]: Rocio Fesembeck 2 goals, 1asst, 3 exclusions drawn; Kelsey O’Brien 1 goal. Maddie Trabucco 8 saves.
Knights [9-1]: Nikki Stansfield 4 goals; Kelsey Roland (Sr.) 13 saves.

GIRLS SOCCER
Los Padres League
at CabrilloCabrillo 7, Santa Maria 0
[Halftime: Cabrillo 3, SM 0]
If one were to choose emblems for the afternoons experienced by the two goalkeepers , Cabrillo GK Kiki Miller would be the 'Maytag Repairman' and the Saints Carime Morales would the movie 'Under Siege'. Miller could have spent much of the game under shade while resting in a lounge chair and sipping lemonade. Morales, meanwhile, was nursing an injured right shoulder and facing a constant barrage of shots from a tall, powerful, aggressive, and talented Conquistador front.
Although, "The entire team played with soul and heart." in the words of 1st year skipper Rogelio Gonzalez, the Saints lost to a bigger, more athletic, more experienced, and simply better team. This would appear to be the squad Derrick Wong was expecting to show up a few weeks back.
There was an incident late in the game, in which a Cabrillo player was fouled by the same 'Saint' for the umpteenth time and she retaliated. The ref was already reaching for his cards when she did so, making it easy for him to give each of them a yellow.
Conqs [2-0 LPL]: Goals (Assists) - Jamie Miller (Brianna Farley), Marissa Reyna (Miller), Kaeli Jones (Reyna), Athena Nava (Kelsey Sherry), Miller (Jamie Hedges), Sherry (Reyna), Sydney Townes (Audrianna LaPorte). Saves - Kiki Miller 1. Corner Kicks - 3, Offsides - 5.
Saints : Goals/Assists - None. Saves - Carime Morales 10+. Corner Kicks - 1, Offsides - 0.
Junior Varsity
Cabrillo 1, Santa Maria 0
[Halftime: Cabrillo 0, SM 0]
This was a much closer score than the varsity match. The Conqs got a 2nd half goal when Kristina Greenwood stole the ball and launched a beautiful arcing shot from about 25 yards out that just slid in under the crossbar.
The match was actually rather lop-sided, with Cabrillo controlling the ball most of the game inside the Santa Maria half. Due to some bad luck, good back-line defense, and excellent play by Naomi Miramontez in goal, the Conqs were repeatedly turned away from the net.
The goal and back (Arlette Tovilla, Leticia Perez, Melissa Villapando) were faced with repeated assaults after turnovers in midfield.
Conqs : Goals - Kristina Greenwood. Assists - None. Saves - Rikki Patel (1st half) 1, Mikaela Thomas (2H) 2. Injuries - Danille Osborne (Ankle).
Saints : Goals - None. Assists - None. Saves - Naomi Miramontez 10+.

[MB: 17,15,19,14 - 66 C: 1,6,4,7 - 18]
How good is this Pirate squad ? Really, really, good !! There was a running clock the entire 4th period and they still scored 14 - mostly with the subs in. Hannah Gilbert picked up 2 fouls in the 1st period and missed much of the 1st and most of the 2nd, and had no 1st half rebounds. She finished with 18 points, 5 rebounds (3 offensive), and several assists.
Five players hit three pointers, mainly because the others didn't shoot them. They were 8-11 from the line, and held Cabrillo to just 5 FG (incd 1 trey) on the night. They did, perhaps, pick up too many fouls (13) mostly in the act of shooting - sending Cabrillo to the line 13 times (7-13).
Primarily, they passed, rebounded, played defense, shot, moved without the ball, etc. all quite well.
Pirates [8-3, 2-0 LPL]: Hannah Gilbert 18; Caitlyn Cowardin13 (2x3, 5-5 FT), 7 rbs; Sierra Schwellenbach 11(3x3), 6 assts; Kara Schmidt 9 (1x3); Nikki Machado 7 (1x3); Jerrica Crosby 6 (1x3), 10 rbs; Nickie Bloom 1; Olivia MacDonald 1.

How many times do I need to say it ?? Get there for the JV game !!! This one had more twists and turns than Harris Grade Road north of the school. The Pirates only had 6 players on their team (CHS 10) and it nearly cost them. Two players in particular would figure in this tale - Vicky Roboz and Sierra Emrick. The long and the short of it actually. Emrick, a 5-11 sophomore, is the eraser. She is the defensive anchor inside, and a rebound collector. Roboz, generously listed at 5-0, is the veteran point guard, penetrator, distributor, and outside scorer.
The first problem for Morro Bay was that Emrick got into foul trouble early, and she was not alone. Three Pirates each had 3 fouls in the 1st half, with Emrick collecting hers with 7:02 left in the 2nd period. She collected her 4th, in the 3rd. Roboz, meanwhile, was tearing up and down the court with abandon, but she added 2 more fouls to the one she had in the first half to become the 4th Pirate with at least 3 fouls.
With 5:30 left in the 4th, Cabrillo trailed 39-27, but as Morro Bay was coming down the floor, Roboz pulled up in the back court, and at the ensuing play stoppage, left the game at 5:05 with leg cramps. Just 5 ticks of the game clock later, Emrick fouled out, evening the team fouls for the half at 5 apiece. The staff worked frantically on Roboz during the replacement time-out and she re-entered the game. She was clearly not functioning at a high level though, and Cabrillo narrowed the margin to 10 (29-39) and then 8 (31-39).
At 3:41 Roboz left the game again. The Cabrillo training staff helped work on her, and the Conqs even called a time out (ostensibly to discuss strategy), but Roboz would not return to the game. [She would receive continuing treatment and would be in good enough shape to later leave with ehe team.] Morro Bay would have to finish the game with just 4 players. The Conqs closed the gap with another bucket, and then both teams got a bit sloppy.
Each turned the ball over, and Morro Bay committed their 6th team foul (2:51). The craziness continued, Cabrillo got a rebound, the Pirates stole it, and the Conqs forced a dual possession. Finally, some semblance or order was restored. At 2:36, Morro Bay fouled Vaness Martinez in the act of shooting and she promptly drained both FT's to cut the lead to 4. An improper dribble by the Pirates led to Taylor Kelley being fouled and she also hit both FT's. So, with 2:20 left, the Conqs were down two (37-39), and still up a player, as folk continued to work on Roboz.
Each team missed lay-ups, but Morro Bay sprung Shannon Stebbins loose on the baseline and she got the bucket and the foul. Martinez fouled out and Stebbins hit the freebie for a 42-38 advantage. Cabrillo then turned the ball over on a 3 second count, and Vanessa Villanueva fouled out while sending Ayla Dillis to the line to completed an old-fashioned three-point play. She did, making the score 45-37, and Cabrillo began to foul.
Following a Cabrillo time-out, they missed a trey attempt. Dillis (0-1) and Chloe Lindsey (1-2) went to the line for the Pirates and stretched the lead back to 9 (46-37). But Lindsey also fouled Jenna Daley with 0:42 left and she made both her shots count (46-39). Taylor Kelly sent Lindsey back to the line, she hit the 1st, but not the 2nd. Cabrillo snagged the rebound, but was called for traveling.
Kelley, apparently the designated fouler, put Natalie Marquandt under the spotlight with 0:25 on the clock and she missed both shots. With 0:18 remaining, Lindsey returned the favors she had gotten and sent Kelley to the stripe for 2. She made the front (47-40), but not the second. Marquandt grabbed the rebound, and Kelley fouled her and fouled out 3 seconds later. Marquandt again got one, and Cabrillo tried a deep trey that missed. The Pirates took the rebound and ran out what little remained of the clock.
Sierra Emrick hoping the Pirates can hold on. |
