Wrestling

The Cabrillo Conquistadors varsity took the mat at St. Joseph HS Thursday evening, but not before a full undercard. The Knight's Ladies led off the program followed by the some JV contests and even an exhibition match.

The old adage relates that some large percentage of success is 'just showing up'. That was true in large measure for the Conquistadors on Thursday. The result of the Varsity Match was somewhat preordained since St. Joseph only fielded 7 grapplers in the 14 weight classes, but as Knights Head Coach Johnny Martinez stated "We're not trying to win. We just want to wrestle." And wrestle they did. In the matches that were held, they nipped Cabrillo 20-19.

Cabrillo Head Coach Chad Johnson, while happy with the win, noted that "We obviously have a lot to work on, mostly technique and execution."

Result: Major Decision (15-3: 3-0/5-2/7-1) for Cabrillo.  Score: 22-18

This was a really good match early. It was still 0-0 late in the 1st, when Thomas managed to get Gropetti on his back and was moments away from an almost certain pin when the buzzer sounded. Thomas did get the 3 points for the 'near fall', but neither wrestler came close to a pin the rest of the way.

145: Vincent Rodriguez [CHS] vs Joaquin Castellanos [StJ]
Result: Technical Fall (22-6: 6-2/9-3/7-1) for St Joseph, c.0:55 3rd. Score: 22-23

This would have been a more interesting match, except for the frequent & necessary interruptions for 'Blood Timeouts'. Castellanos received a cut near his eye, and play was stopped about a half dozen times times. He consistently controlled the action, but both wrestlers were out of rhythm.

Babauta, shorter and stockier, was able to stay under the shoot attempts by Kilgore. He worked through the initial rounds with a 1 point lead. Kilgore had to take some chances in the 3rd, and got caught.

The JV Action

There were only 4 JV matches. Actually only 3, because 2 of the contests were at 138 lbs, so one of them officially beame an 'exhibition' match. Cabrillo took 2 of the 3 by pin, with Wyatt Smalling defeating Ryan Drazo, and Thomas Gabriel besting Matthew Gomez at 138. At 145 St. Joe's Joseph Castellanos won a Technical Fall over Jared Segura.

Kade Hudleman battled Andrew Smith in the 4th event, but per CIF rule the match had to be unscored.

The Gals

St. Joseph girls took on 3 opponents from Santa Maria HS before the boys got started. Knight sisters Briana and Megan Murphy were pinned , respectively, by Daisy Lomelli and Vanessa Gudinez. The Saints Alicia Soto drew the unenviable task of trying to slow down Christina Jenne, who improved her record to 5-0 with a pin.
