Black and Blue Hoops, More Black Than Blue

Gaby has been saying it all year -
... and Friday night she was.

Those who claim basketball in a 'non-contact' sport have apparently never attended a contest between Lompoc and Cabrillo. The girls contest at Cabrillo on Friday was rather intense, although not rising to the level of the near combat in the lane between Chelsea Casullo (who was at the game)[Scroll Down for News]  and Roxanne Rentschler a few years back. Downtown the fellas combined for 79 FT attempts on 53 fouls.

Lompoc/Cabrillo Basketball

Girls at Cabrillo
Cabrillo 55, Lompoc 47
[C: 14,12,15,14 - 55  L: 14,4,17,12 - 47]

A young, thin (8 players) and inexperienced Lompoc squad, got younger and more inexperieced, but battled the also very young Conquistadors on an even basis for most of the night. The problem for the Braves was that most isn't all. The teams scored 14 apiece in the 1st quarter, and both scored 29 points after the half, thus it was in the 2nd period that Cabrillo struck the blow from which Lompoc never recovered.

The Braves were able to build and hold a 4-6 lead through much of the 1st, but Cabrillo was able to close out the period with an 4-0 run in the last 2 minutes to tie the game at 14. Part of the difficulty that Lompoc had was that both Rylee Sager and Precilla Castellanos got into early foul trouble, with each committing the dreaded back-to-back fouls with-in seconds.

In the 2nd, Cabrillo's defense hounded the Braves into several turnovers, and Lompoc missed several easy shots, a recurring Braves bug-a-boo. The result being just 4 points scored in the period, allowing the Conqs to build an 8 point lead.

Lompoc did fight its way back into the game in the 3rd, tying the score at 28 with 5:17 remaining an forcing a Cabrillo time-out. They even took a sort lived 29-28 lead, but had expended so much energy to get back level that they didn't have reserves to deal with the Conq counter-offensive, and Cabrillo scored 9 in a row. Lompoc would make some other surges, but to no avail.

Cabrillo Head Coach Kari Rosson, who has long been preaching teamwork, was thrilled with the way her charges played together. "I told them before the game, and during practice- 'If we don't work together, we won't beat them.' They worked together. They executed. They concentrated. Passing, everything, I just couldn't be happier."

The Braves' first loss was the unavailability of starting Point Guard Lexie Barbosa. She was replaced at the point by 2-guard Precilla Castellanos, who was replaced in turn by Mackenzee Chambers. Chambers spot off the bench was assigned to Bella Almanza who was called up from the JV squad. Highlighting what Claudia Terrones, Lompoc Head Coach, stated -"We're young. We're still learning the fundamentals of the game."  She was particularly concerned with problems in the defensive transitions, but she  pointed out "We're working hard. Working everyday, and all we can do is get better."

Since both groups are quite young - 3 juniors, 5 sophomores, 2 freshmen among the starters, most of these girls are not far removed from youth basketball where they often played on the same teams with members of the other squad. There was, before and after the game, a kind family reunion aspect to the event. Moms, dads, kids, and others catching up with one another, and a plethora of hugs. During the game, however, there was something more akin to 'sibling rivalry' on display.

One exception to both the youth and the shared history is Belgian exchange student and senior, Chloe Vangansberg, who had one of her better nights and was one the Conq players who really stepped up her game Friday night. Her 8 points more than quintupling her 1.5 ppg average. Soph Sophia Stevens also played well, doubling her average in both points and rebounds. The most improved play though may have been, Cabrillo PG Gaby Baumgardner who was able to reduce her turnover numbers, was more efficient on offense, and played smart, hustling defense.

The only Lompoc senior, Shyanne Dean, also answered the bell, especially after frosh Sager, who was playing well, ran into foul trouble. Castellanos was in almost constant motion, and Arianna Espinosa kept the Braves in the game with big bucket after big bucket.

Braves [5-9, 0-2]: Arianna Espinosa 12 (2x3), Chrisshnay Brown 9 (5-8 FT), Rylee Sager 9 (1-1FT) [Fouled Out], Mackenzee Chambers 7 (1x3), Shyanne Dean 6, Precilla Castellanos 4 (2-3FT). Team: Fouls 18 (9/9), 8-12 FT.

Cabrillo 58, Lompoc 34
[C: 17,18,13,10 - 58  L: 13,7,0,14 - 34]
Lompoc was down 10 in the 1st quarter, but rallied and closed to within two (19-17) early in the 2nd. After a Cabrillo surge, the Braves would squeeze the margin down to 4 (24-20) on a Lovingood deuce with about 4 minutes left before halftime. They would not score again until early in the 4th quarter, during which time Cabrillo would double their previous total.

Coach Jared McCune liked what he saw from Taylor Kelley, including - "Really great pressure defense."

The Braves hadn't played in about 3 weeks, were without their best player, and played like it. The Lompoc squad is also almost all freshmen, 1 sophomore played Friday, while Cabrillo has 5 juniors, 5 sophomores, and 1 frosh.
