Local Contests

A bit of the 3rd -

Boys Basketball
The Conquistadors swept the Pirates at home Wednesday evening. They won the varsity match-up in a blowout, and the frosh contest quite handily, but the JV contest was a dandy !!

6:30 PM [V]: Santa Ynez 34, at Cabrillo 65  [STORY]
[C: 14,14,27,10 - 65    SY: 12,4,8,10 - 34]
It was close for a bit, and then it wasn't. The Cabrillo press squelched the Prates in the 2nd and blew them away in the 3rd. It was a point or two either way through most of the 1st period, as both defenses made some highlight plays. Cabrillo finally opened a 14-8 lead, but the Pirates reeled them back in in the final 2 minutes, and it was the Conqs by 2 at the first break.

Early in the 2nd quarter, Santa Ynez actually tied the score at 14, but West hit a FT, Brodhead scored the next 4 points, and SY called for a TO at 4:03. Brodhead got two more and at 3:05 with the score 21-14 the Pirates took TO #2. It didn't break the Conq roll, just 33 seconds later they were up 25-16, and scored the last 3 points of the half.

Cabrillo steadily expanded the margin throughout most of the 3rd with a big surge at the end. Breaking the period into 4 2-minute segments, the Conqs topped SY by 4, 2, 1, and 10 points. It was 9-7 (64-30) in the first 4 minutes of the 4th, and Cabrillo coasted to the finish with the subs in. The Conqs only scored 1 point after the 4 minute mark, a Guillermo Cisneros FT at 1:05.

The Conqs participated in the MaxPreps Tournament in Palms Springs over the Holiday break, where they got thumped a few times by teams like Concord De La Salle. According to Cabrillo Head Coach Gary West  that played a part in the victory, "That's why you play 'up', like there in the desert, and the Carpinteria tournament. You don't expect a 30-point win, but it should make you better, and get you ready for league.".

Conqs [2-0 LPL]: Chad Brodhead 22 points (163rd Q), 7 blks, 2 rbs; Josh West 11pts; Aaron Abayari 10 pts; Michael Woodard 7 pts, 6 rbs.
Pirates [1-1 LPL]: Karl Fredrickson 12, Clinton Anderson 10.

5:00 PM [JV]: Santa Ynez 61, at Cabrillo 63
[C: 14,13,12,24 - 63   SY: 14,20,11,16 - 61]
Two things frequently discussed in this bit of cyber-space are the JV contests often providing a better game than the varsity, and free throw shooting. Both came into play in this one. The varsity won by 31, the JV by 2, and their opponents missed 6 FT's in the later part of the 4th quarter.

Tied after one, Santa Ynez pulled out to a 7 point lead at halftime, and still led by 6 at the end of the 3rd. The early part of the 4th was more of the same, with the Pirates holding a lead of 5-7 points and Cabrillo staying with them, but making no headway. Then at 5:09, with the Conqs at the lower end of the range, Nigel Dalton got loose in the lane, drove to the hoop, laid the ball up, and was fouled. The ball used all of the rim, but eventually dropped through. Dalton hit the FT and suddenly, a game that had been on autopilot, was a one score affair.

Cabrillo quickly committed a pair of fouls, the second sending Santa Ynez to the line for two. They got the first, but not the second, the start of a pattern, and led 49-46 with just under 5 minutes to play. Then the game got a bad case of the sloppies, as both squads had multiples misses, turnovers, and general chaos. There was some defense as well, including back-to-back blocks by the visitors.

Finally with 4:00 to play, Deshawn Bowen scored to make it a 1 point game (49-48). Twenty-one seconds later Conqs fouled again, and the Pirates again made 1-2 FT's. Darren Munoz dropped in a trey to give Cabrillo the lead by, but Ross Preciado answered with a trey for the Pirates. Then Demiri Yang tied the game at 53 all with a 2-pointer, and there was still 2:38 on the clock.

Jacob Millard yanked down a rebound, and his put-back put SY back up by 2, but 11 seconds later Yang drilled a 3-pointer to re-establish Cabrill0 in the lead (56-55). With 97 ticks remaining on the clock, Cabrillo sent SY to the line, and for the third time they hit the 1st and missed the second. Tied at 56.

Dalton, at 1:23, drove the lane for 2, SY missed the front end of a one-and-one, but Dalton hit 2 freebies for a 4 point advantage with 1:03 to play. The Pirates came down court and missed a shot, and while they snagged the rebound, they immediately gave the ball back on a traveling call. Dalton was fouled again with 0:35 left, and made the 2nd FT, after missing the 1st. Cabrillo by 5.

Santa Ynez promptly turned the ball over, but got it back, and, with 26 seconds left, were yet again fouled in the act of shooting. This time the ball the shot was good, but the charity shot was missed. 61-58 Cabrillo. Cedric Williams was fouled, and since both teams were in the bonus, had two shots. He made both to put the Conqs back up five (63-58) with 0:18 to go.

Santa Ynez quickly transited the court, and put up a shot. It missed, but Millard grabbed the rebound in a crowd, and as he was falling out of bounds, flipped the ball to Jackson Tatemia. Tatemia went up with the ball and it just rolled out of the hoop, but he was fouled. Two shots. He made the first, and intentionally missed the second, grabbed the rebound and laid it in to pull the Pirates back within two (65-63). Seven seconds left.

The ensuing inbounds pass was partially deflected, but Cabrillo was able to chase it down and get the outlet pass downcourt to run out the clock.

Conqs : Cedric Williams 17, Nigel Dalton 16, Darren Munoz 11, Demetri Yang 6, Deshawn Bowen 5. Sabree Mixon - out.
Pirates : Chase Mattheny 18 (2x3), Ross Preciado 18 (3x3), Jackson Tatemia 7, Justin Lopez 7, Jacob Millard 5.
