Semi-Finals

It was generally a good night for Northern Area squads. The exceptions were the two Santa Barbara County Teams in Division 6 - which both lost at home.
There is the  possibility of continuing on in the State Tournament, but the hope of the two schools located 27 miles apart playing for the Section Championship is lost.

First Round

Division 5

Nipomo 8, Oxnard 3
at Nipomo High School
[N 3,2 [5] 0,1 [1] Half]

Luke Wilenius was spectacular again despite recovering from illness. The Nipomo keeper was under constant assault, often at point-blank range, but held up under the barrage and dragged the Titans into the Second Round with him.

Jacob Billinger scored twice in the 1st quarter despite tight defense at 2-meters by Manny Ruiz that closed him down the rest of the way. The Titan defense was even more effective though - especially Gerritt VanderVeen and Jeiffer Araujo intervening in the Yellowjackets' long passing game.

Titans : GoalsGerritt VanderVeen 2, Billinger 2 (2 1H), Jeiffer Araujo 2, Pyton Kiunke, Blake Hudson.  Saves - Luke Wilenius 18 (10 1H)

Yellowjackets: Goals Colin Kilgor 2 (1H/2H), Manny Ruiz (2H 5M)
Saves - Hunter Reed 9.

at Nipomo High School
[SY: 5,5,5,5-20    C: 4,2,1,4]

The visitors arrived late, and the game was delayed 30 minutes, but Santa Ynez made up for the extra time by pulling its starters in the 4th.

Condors: GoalsJesus Padilla 5.

Santa Ynez also won the coin flip and hosts Cypress (home winners over La Habra 15-13) on Thursday at a location to be determined. The Pirates cannot host a playoff game at their shallow-deep on-campus pool and may double up at Nipomo again.

Wild Card Round

Division 3
at A High School

Crespi (Encino) 10, Arroyo Grande 8 [OT]
[AG: 2,1,2,1 (6) 2- 8  C: 2,0,1,3 (6) 4 - 10]

Although under the new CIF-SS playoff system many teams are completely unknown to each other, this game was a rematch - Crespi beat Arroyo Grande 8-1 at a tourney earlier in the season.

The Eagles received a crucial goal from frosh Shane Hoover to send it into overtime, but had a difficult time maintaining possession in the extra period. That led to too many opportunities for the Celts who put them to good use - outscoring AG 4-2 in the standard overtime periods.

Arroyo Grande was hampered for nearly the entire second half, due to the ejection of senior Chase Taylor after picking up three exclusions. Taylor was a major offensive factor in the later portion of the season and tallied the Eagles first goal of the game.

Eagles [21-8, 7-1 PAC 8]: Goals - Shane Hoover (Fr) 4 (3 4Q/OT), Nathan Solis (Jr) 2 (3Q), Chase Taylor (Sr) 1 (1Q).

Celts : Goals (Incld) - Maxim Romanovici (Sr) 2 (2H), Patrick McNamara (0:48 OT).

Crespi plays Ruben Ayala in the first round on Wednesday.
