Good Luck, Girls - {Update}

Not that you need it. The Cabrillo Girls Water Polo team travels today to take on Rio Mesa in the Div IV simi-finals at Oxnard HS (3:30 pm). This group of youngsters is one of the most improved since the start of the season, and are melding their great talent into a greater whole. Methinks that coaching is involved, perhaps ? The winner gets to tangle with the survivor of the Arroyo Grande / La Canada match-up @ Cuesta College (3:15 pm).

UPDATE
GIRLS WATER POLO
Division IV: Unfortunately, it was not to be. Cabrillo lost 9-3. Callie Matulis had 10 saves in the net, Rachel Nelson (2) and Celeste Suzani furnished the Conquistador points. Arroyo Grande scored with about 20 seconds on the fourth quarter clock to force overtime, and pulled out a 7-6 win.

Checking on the Graduates

The Spring Sports are starting, or have started for some.

Courtney Dosa [Softball (LHS)]

A power hitter for the Braves last season, Courtney takes her game to Jefferson (Mo.) [Junior] College this year. Look for #22 to make an impact for the Vikings as they open play with a doubleheader vs. Lindenwood University at St. Charles, Mo. on Tues, Feb. 24 (2:00 pm), before taking on four opponents in the Evangel Early Bird Tournament on the 27th & 28th.

Michael Coe [Track (CHS)]

The junior at Cal-Berkeley has only participated in one of the teams three meets this season, posting a NCAA automatic qualifying time (7:48.o5) in his only race, the 3000 meters, and finishing 2nd to the phenom- German Fernandez. The next meet, the MPSF Indoor Championships, will be on the 27-28 February 2009.

Julia Heath [Golf (LHS)]

It was a tough spring opener for Julia at the 2009 Braveheart Classic scheduled for 9-10 February 2009. First the tournament was reduced to 18 holes after Monday’s rainout and tee times were delayed two hours Tuesday because of frost conditions. Then she had one of her worst rounds as a Mustang - an 85. That tied her for 53rd (of 80) overall, and was fifth placer for Cal-Poly. The event was hosted by UC Riverside at Oak Valley Golf Club.

But the Winter Sports aren't all over yet.

Geoff West/Jason West [Baketball (CHS)]

The U of Mary [6-19, 4-14 Northern Sun] Mens Basketball unit certainly like close games - in the 12 games since January 13th they have gone 3-9, but have played 4 overtime games (1-3) and 6 others that were decided by 6 points or less (2-4). Two of the losses during the streak were by one point on the road. Those last three words are very significant because the team is 6-5 at home this season - but 0-14 a opponents or neutral sites. They play at home on Wednesday (25th) and away on the 28th.

Geoff (a senior) has played in 24 games with 17 starts, while little brother Jason has been the usual replacement in the starting spot (12). Geoff is averaging 14.1 ppg. & Jason 8.0 ppg. . Click on the link below for complete stats this year.

Total Team Stats

Joel Smith [Basketball (LHS)]

Playing his final year of collegiate ball at Chaminade Univ. [13-9, 7-4 Conf.]while working on his Masters Degree, Joel, a guard, has performed at a very high level. Starting 21 of 22 games, he has averaged 14.6 ppg (15.0 in conf.), while leading the team in steals and blocks. He is also 2nd in rebounds.
Four of the five remaining regular season games for the team (through 6 March 09) are at home where they are 7-2.

Also Lydell Sargeant is at the NFL Combine this week.

A Quick (?) Review of Releaguing

"Wait, I thought all this was settled.", you say. Well, to quote Lee Corso - "Not so fast my friend". Decisions recently made in Ventura County may throw the whole process into the spin cycle.

First, a few reminders.

CIF is made up of 10 sections, and Lompoc is located in the largest of them - Southern Section. Schools within the section are grouped into nine, mostly geographical, areas. Ours is the Northern Area which essentially consists of schools in San Luis Obisbo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura Counties.

Southern Section governance is controlled by the Southern Section Council. The Council is a large group primarily consisting of Representatives from each league, and they meet 3-4 times each year.

In between meetings, CIF is controlled by the Council Executive Committee, a group of 20-25 representing various factions, areas, and interests.

For releaguing purposes, there is also a "Releaguing Committee" established during the quadrennial reshuffle that reports to the Executive Committee. This group co-ordinates the work of "Area Releaguing Chairpersons" who hold meetings of area Principals, AD's, etc. in an attempt to reach a consensus.

So what happened, already ?

The local plan moving St. Joseph to the PAC-7 from the LPL, which the Knights weren't thrilled about, and moved Lompoc football back to the LPL, is part of the overall Northern Area plan. And at the Northern Area meeting earlier this month 14 proposals were considered, but the one receiving the most votes (31-23) kicked off a massive controversy. The new "official" plan created a new football-only four team league consisting of powerhouses St. Bonaventure (Ventura) & Oaks Christian (Westlake Village) along with designated patsies Santa Clara (Oxnard) and Grace Brethren (Simi Valley).

While both of the latter schools have had some recent success on the gridiron, they are no match for two of the best in the country -- and they plan to appeal. Even 'St Bonny' and 'Oaks' are unhappy and plan to appeal. The Marmonte League put the kibosh on a plan to swap Oaks Christian (for Calabasas) with the Tri-Valley League, and would appeal any attempt to saddle them with either of behemoths. The proposal also reinvigorated the 'church school'/'public school' playoff system debate from last year.

What is in the cards ?

Did you notice the number of times the word 'appeal' was used ? Did you also notice how many different organisational levels have to be cleared for a plan to be approved ? The whole affair has basically been dumped in the laps of the Executive Committee to accept a very contentious plan or establish a new one by fiat. If that happens, the entire Northern Area is subject to redistribution. Either way, possible appeals could stretch until the October meeting of the full Council -- and somebody is likely to be very unhappy. -- el stato
