Close, but no See-gar.... [ + Wednesday Updates]

It was not a good day for most of the local squads, both Cabrillo Volleyball and Lompoc Tennis varsity outfits took their opponents down to the wire - then tripped over it.

{UPDATES: Girls Volleyball, Boys Water Polo, Girls Golf}

And the new SMT Football Poll: 1. Arroyo Grande (4-0), 2. Atascadero (4-0), 3. St Joseph (2-1), 4. Righetti (3-1), 5. Lompoc (2-2), 6. SLO (2-2), 7. Paso Robles (1-2), 8. Cabrillo (1-3) , 9. Santa Maria (2-2), 10. Templeton (2-2). Both Santa Ynez (8th) & Morro Bay (10th) fell out of the Top 10 this week.
Three Comments -
1) Since AG hosts Atascadero, and St Joe crosses the street to Righetti on Friday night, there is likely going to be room for the Braves to move up with a Homecoming win vs Santa Ynez.
2) The other PAC-7 game has SLO going over the grade to Paso. If Cabrillo can cover the same ground and come back from Templeton a winner, we may see both valley teams in the top 5.
3) That would not necessarily be a major accomplishment however. In the current list only 4 squads have winng records, and the AG Eagles & the Greyhounds aside, the rest of the list is only 15-15 on the season.

Another squeeker where the locals came up just short. The Braves have been in the hunt recently, but can't seem to get over the top. Singles went 5-4 for Lompoc, Doubles 5-4 for the Pirates. Sierra Wicox/ Jessica Wagner won a crucial tiebreaker [7-6 (7-4)], and swept three sets for the Pirates.

Singles: Pirates - Megan Hansen [2-6, 6-1, 6-0], and Joyce Lo [4-6, 6-4, 6-1] captured 2 sets each. Braves - A Sameeha Sweep (Sameeha Husayn), and 2 set wins by Nicole Nomany.
Doubles: Pirates - Sierra Wicox/ Jessica Wagner [6-4,7-6 (7-4), 6-1] accounted for 3 of the 5 Pirate points. Lompoc - Pairs Cera Mitchell/ Ashala Martin, Julie Abrego/ Marielle Tabin, and Catalina Perez/Amargiete Larios all reportedly won at least once.

@ Santa Ynez 13, Santa Maria 5
The Pirates won the Battle of the Santa's. They also used a fair number of non-regulars.

The Templeton / Nipomo match was postponed due to heat conditions, and is now slated for next Monday. Cabrillo had the Bye.

Monday's Results

LPL Girls Golf
Santa Ynez 234, Lompoc 336
Lompoc hosted Santa Ynez on the front nine at La Purisima on Monday and in addition to the usual difficulties posed by the course, it was brutally hot. A light breeze came up later in the afternoon, but nothing cooled down the hot shooting Pirates, who were paced by Maddison "Maddi" Shean, whose 4-0ver-par 40 took Medalist honors.

Santa Ynez is now 7-1 overall, 2-0 in LPL duals, and has won both LPL Tournaments contested this season. Their only loss was to Santa Barbara in the season opener. Lompoc falls to 0-3, (0-2 LPL).

Individual Scores

Lompoc [336]: Kaleigh Goethe 58, Julietta Solis 60, Stephanie Cardoza 69 [Personal Record], Stacy Green 71, Lady Rodriquez 78.
Santa Ynez [234]: Maddison Shean 40, Kristen Henno 41, Meredith Stewart 42, Christiana Layman 48, Jenny Andreas 63.

Morro Bay 292, Santa Maria 333
[9 holes at Morro Bay Golf Club]

Morro Bay: Michelle Cordova 47 (Medalist), Jill Steinman 48, Alison Kirby 62, Cathy Duncan 64, Bethany Walters 71.

Cabrillo hosts Nipomo today at the Village Country Club, and is at the LPL Tourney #3 on Thursday .

NSBC Athletic Roundtable - Valley Sweep
It was a Lompoc Valley Sweep as Athlete of the Week honors went to Cabrillo's Morgan Salm and Lompoc alum Favi Vargas. Salm continued her dominance of the Los Padres League girls golf circuit - taking Medalist honors in every LPL tournament played this season. Vargas, was instrumental in the Hancock Bulldogs victory over Glendale college. He had 5 tackles, vital pass break-ups, recovered an on-side kick, and iced it with a 55 yard interception return.

Girls Volleyball
St. Joseph 3, @ Nipomo 0
[25-18, 25-12, 25-20]
St. Joseph was paced by Analisa Sibulka, Shannon Swaim (20 digs), and Katie Drewniak (19 assists).

Thanks to Conquistadors assistant Jennifer Smith we know more about Cabrillo's trip to the Carpinteria Invite (See previous posts), where their 8-2 record was good enough for 3rd place.

Kristina Goodchild was selected to the "All Tournament Team" for her phenomenal defensive skills; logging 71 digs for the entire tournament.
Other defensive standouts were Lauren Pluim and Brianna Farley with 9 blocks each. Offensively the girls racked up numerous kills; Kayla Brooks with 21, Felicia Bowen had 18 while Kelly O'Connell put away 16 kills and Kiley Shae Aldridge had 68 assists during the weekend. Coach [Jim] Hilliard stated, "In all the years I have been part of this volleyball program we had never placed in the championship pool in this tournament!"

Harrier & Other Weekend Happenings

The X-C squads from Lompoc & Cabrillo made the trip to Santa Barbara to 'slog around the slough' in the UCSB Lagoon Run (the Cabrillo boys were 1st), while the rest of the LPL was scattered around the state.

A contingent from the area traveled south to the Bell-Jeff Invitational, including Morro Bay (B-3rd White Div, G - 6th Red Div), St Joseph (G-1st Blue Div, B- 2nd Blue Div), and Orcutt Academy boys (3rd - Blue Div). The Knight girls were led by race winner Quetta Peinado (18:42), and the Spartans collected the schools first ever team award.

The harriers from Nipomo, Templeton, and the Santa Ynez girls were at Waller Park for the Righetti Invitational, where they got to see the Eagles Savannah Camacho take the girls race in 19:20 - almost two minutes faster than her winning time (21:19) from last year. {Those upcoming Peinado / Camacho clashes are gonna be fun.}

The last group, the guys from Santa Ynez, joined the likes of SLO and Mission Prep at the Stanford Invitational, and posted a 16th in the 33 team Division IV. One other local note from the Stanford was the 5th place finish, in the collegiate men's 8K race, of Cal/ Cabrillo runner Michael Coe. His 23:29 was by far the best time on the Cal team, which also finished fifth.

Aaaand, since we are talking about area alumni, Hancock/ Lompoc linebacker Favi Vargas had 55 yard interception return TD with 1:05 remaining to seal a 44-28 football win over the visiting Glendale Vaqueros.

Like their X-C compatriots on Saturday, the Conquistador varsity volleyball girls were also pounding along the shore - but in a somewhat different manner. At the Carpinteria Tourney, Cabrillo posted an 8-2 record in one set matches versus 8 separate opponents, beating Nordoff twice, and splitting a pair of close sets with Laguna Blanca. The other loss was to eventual champion St. Bonaventure. They were really only challenged three times - the two losses and a 27-25 nailbiter over Cate.

Round One to the Hilltoppers Progeny

The moon peaks over the hedges at Huyck Stadium during the Lompoc/ Dos Pueblos JV game on Thursday night.

Thursday was one of those with to much sports to fit the time allotted. Cabrillo hosted Lompoc in Girls Volleyball (Varsity & JV) and Girls Varsity Tennis, while the JV played downtown. Lompoc also played JV & Frosh football games at Huyck Stadium, with the Conquistador freshmen on the road in Arroyo Grande. Meanwhile, the Girls Golf squads from both schools were at LPL Tournament #2 hosted by Santa Maria at Rancho Maria Golf Club. There was even some water polo here and there.

This was not a repeat of recent years, with a parade of Conq servers pounding the Braves off the court. Cabrillo did sweep, but they had to work for it. In Game #1, Lompoc took a quick 4-2 lead, and were still in contact at 6-8, when the Conq put together a 12-3 run. Each team scored 5 points to close it out. Game #2 started with Kelly O'Connell serving Cabrillo to an 11-0 advantage, and many in the gym were expecting Lompoc to collapse, instead the Braves rallied. Lompoc steadily closed the gap until a Jesslyn Brundy ace brought them to within a single point at 20-19, but Cabrillo had a 5-1 run for the win. The Braves again fought back, taking a 7-1 lead in Game #3, Cabriilo cut the margin to two (11-9), Lompoc pushed it back to four (13-9), and held it at three (15-12). It was not to last - the Conqs tied the score at 16 all, and then outscored the Braves 9-1 to end the match.

The Conquistadors are happy that Slovakian exchange student Magdalena "Maggie" Fabikova showed up with a tennis racquet. The senior #2 posted a three set sweep in singles on Thursday, including a 7-5 victory in a really good 2nd round contest against Braves #1 Sameeha Husayn.

Cabrillo also racked up sweeps from senior doubles duos Bree Piper-Williams/ Nikki Peirtsegaele and Alena Taber/ Andrianna Siefe. Particularly impressive was a Taber/Siefe rebound - they were down 2-5, fought off what Head Coach MaryBeth Steiber said "seemed like 40 set points", and pulled out a 7-6 (7-3) tiebreaker win.

Cabrillo also had a big advantage in experience - 11 of 13 team members were seniors, while the Braves squad had 3 seniors, 5 juniors, and 2 frosh.

This one was, well, ugly !! The Chargers took their initial possession of the game, drove the field, scored on a Dylan Rohde TD Run, and kicked the PAT. Nothing much happened offensively the rest of the half. DP controlled the ball almost exclusively, had some additional trips to the red zone, but for naught.

The Braves looked to get something going early in the second half, when Rafael Arellano took the opening kick-off 51 yards to the DP 30 yardline. They gave the ball back 4 plays later - losing 2yards on 4th & 14.

Lompoc was given another opportunity midway through the 4th quarter, when the Chargers turned the ball over via a fumble at their own 43. The Chargers helped out some more with a 15yd facemask penalty, and Arellano capitalized with a 25 yd TD jaunt down the right side. With 5:13 remaining, the Braves attempted the PAT, strange things happened and the kick was just short.

Lompoc forced a punt on the ensuing DP series, but gave it back again on downs, and watched the Chargers take a pair of knees.

The Juggernaught continues - it was 35-0 at the half. Steve Haskins frosh squad was held to their second lowest point total of the year. Yup - thats 188 points in 4 games (a 47 pts/gm ave.) !!! The low was last week - 42.

Lompoc 28, Dos Pueblos 14
The Braves were up 28-0, with less than 5 minutes left in the game, when they surrenderred a pair of late TD passes to the Chargers. The scores, made with 4:32 & 0:34 respectively still on the clock, were not enough to overcome the Braves' advantage.

Braves, Saints Down to the Wire - Doubled 21 Sep 10

The Lompoc Braves and the Santa Maria Saints have a long history of athletic competition, but rarely have the had a day like this one. The Saints traveled over the hill to LHS for match-ups between the girls tennis and volleyball squads and both contests were decided in the last set.

Meanwhile the Cabrillo girls attempted to upset LPL conventional wisdom by knocking off the visiting Santa Ynez Pirates in the same two sports, and the Conquistador boys water polo unit tried to quell the upstart St Joseph Knights at the COLAC downtown. In other action girls golf hosted Santa Maria at VCC (No Results yet).

Tuesday Results

LPL Girls Volleyball
Lompoc 3, Santa Maria 2 [Story - scroll down]
[25-19, 22-25, 18-25, 25-11, 15-8]
This was a dandy, as Lompoc moved into an early tie for the LPL lead !! The girls rallied after dropping a pair of close games, by going on a big run in game 4, and repeatedly holding off Saints charges in the capper. Lompoc had numerous opportunities to fold in this one, and simply refused to do so. The Braves were powered by Erika Slikker's thunderous kills, the great hitting of Jess Brundy, Elayna Hockett, & Crystal Grover, Casey Stumpo's super serving, marvelous setting by Danielle Hamon & Gabbie Armero, and the tremendous defensive work of Libero Christina Inda.

Santa Ynez 3, Cabrillo 1
[25-15, 21-25, 25-14, 25-13]

The Pirates [7-6, 1-0] probably aren't as good as last year, but a notch below sensational is still pretty good. SY: Rachel Szellzer - 15 assists, Dalanee Stapp - 42 assists at setter. Cabrillo falls to 0-3, 0-1.

@ Templeton (3-2, 1-0) 3, Morro Bay 2
[Set scores unavailable.]
Eagles: Natalie Madson - 16 kills; Jeanine Madson - 11 kills, 7 aces; Natalie Maloney - 26 digs.

Junior Varsity
Lompoc 2, Santa Maria 1
[25-19, 31-33, 15-10]
The Braves pulled off a rare double victory, but this one wasn't easy either. The 15 extra points in the 2nd set and the tie-breaker pushed back the varsity start time, but the crowd was treated to some wonderful volleyball.

Santa Ynez 2, Cabrillo 0
No other info.

LPL Girls Tennis
Santa Maria 10, (81), Lompoc 8 (84)
The Braves needed 2 of the last 3 sets, and then needed the last one, but came up short, despite winning more games than the Saints. It was a tale of missed opportunities and two halves for the locals. They went 0-4 in sets decided by extra games and while they had a significant (6-3) advantage in singles, they were 2-7 in doubles. That singles advantage is named Sameeha Husayn - she sweept her three sets 6-1, 6-1, 6-0. Nicole Nomany (6-3, 5-7, 6-0) added 2 points.

Santa Ynez 15, Cabrillo 3
The Conqs (1-2, 0-1) were somewhat competitive in the early going, but were soon run over by the 'Emily Express' and her cohorts. The Express, #1 singles player Emily Ineman, fresh off her NSBCART Female Athlete of the Week award, swept 6-1, 6-2, 6-0. The Pirates (2-4, 1-0) also recieved sweeps from #1 (Bianca Capasso/ Kylie Petersen) & #2 (Heather Vellekamp/ Mylee Curtis) doubles. Exchange student Magdalena Fobikova took two sets for Cabrillo.

Santa Ynez JV 10, Cabrillo JV 8
The Cabrillo JV did make thing quite interesting - pushing SY hard, but falling just short.

Templeton 12, Morro Bay 6
Eagles: Doubles - Shelby Baum/ Nicole Roberts 3-0, Mimi Kline/ Sammar Smesme 3-0; Singles - Erin Roberts & Danielle Grassi won 2 sets apiece.

Orcutt Acad. 12, Nipomo 6
The Titans (0-5), who continue to look for their first win of the season, took 6 of 9 singles sets, but were white-washed in doubles. Tessa Underwood and frosh Kelly Burnett (6-2, 6-3, 1-6) each accounted for 2 points.

Boys Water Polo
Cabrillo 12, St Joseph 6 [Story]
This was not your typical Conq conquest. Cabrillo fell behind 3-0, then 5-1, before a Brayson Ogan goal with 0:17 left in the first period got the locals back within three. Cabrillo then woke up and outscored the Knights 10-1 over the remainder of the game, including a 5-1 advantage in the 3rd. It was 5-5 at the half.

Knight keeper Nolan Krause had 17 saves (6 in each of the 2nd & 3rd quarters), and Felix Talkin had 8 saves in goal for the Conquistadors.

Scorers
Cabrillo: Brayson Ogan 4, Aaron Hay 4, Marcus Thiel 2, Nick Hines, Anthony Taylor.
St. Joseph: Shane Villapando 3, Tyler Stetson 2, Andre Morales.

Junior Varsity
Cabrillo

NSB County Athletic Roundtable

Emily Ineman (Santa Ynez, Tennis) and Evan Aguilar (Lompoc, Football) host their respective certificates as NSBCART Female and Male Athlete of the Week.

Northern Santa Barbara County Athletic Roundtable

Cabrillo: AD Dan Troup presented 3 X-C athletes - Danny Pena, Joel Velasquez, and Devon Bedell for their work at the Seaside & Ojai Invitationals (See Reports). Head football coach Craig Knowles presented Team Captains junior T. J. Babauta (RB/OLB) & senior Jordan Watson (RB/CB).

Lompoc: Long-time Brave Dick Barrett presented three members of the football squad that pounded Santa Barbara 41-17. LB/WR Colton Concellos made big plays on both sides of the ball, sophomore Kicker Jose Morales who had 2 FG (31y, 32y), and Evan Aguilar.

Aguilar, known to the TAP-TV broadcast crew as "The Swiss-Army Knife of Lompoc Football", has played wideout, safety, runningback, linebacker, punter, punt & kick returner during his career. He then stepped into the QB job in game #2 and has never looked back.

Against thr Dons, he had 157 yards on 7 carries, and was instrumental in helping the Braves to a 28-0 1st quarter lead. He also made significant contributions on defense and special teams.

Santa Ynez: AD/Head FB Coach Ken Gruendyke presented 3 seniors from his undefeated squad - CB Casey Ellis, QB Parker Johnson, and C Daniel Fournier. Brian Wallace introduced 6 runners off his X-C unit, and Emily Ineman was asked to speak on behalf of the Tennis team.

Ineman, long a mainstay of Pirate doubles, has moved to singles and been destroying the "competition" this year, as the the 'Big Orange Machine" keeps rolling.
