A Tale of Two Leagues [16 Nov]

Saturday, 16 November 2013

Saturday saw 32 races in the CIF-SS XC Prelims down at MtSAC, and a CIF-SS Division 6 Boys Water Polo double-header at the City of Lompoc Aquatic Center.

Two LPL powers, Cabrillo & Santa Ynez hosted playoff contests in Lompoc featuring the likely contenders for the D6 Championship. Unfortunately, those
teams were the visitors from Palm Desert & La Quinta - two nearly adjacent cities located midway between Palm Springs and the Salton Sea. Both are members of the Desert Valley League.

The top-seeded Palm Desert Aztecs and the #2 La Quinta Blackhawks certainly did no damage to their reputations versus the local squads, but also exhibited a fair amount of talent that will soon be on display in the upper echelons of the sport.

#2 Seed La Quinta 18 Cabrillo 5
[LQ 7,4,5,2 - 18   Cab 1,1,3,0 - 5]

The Blackhawks struck early and often, using 3 quick counters to score three times in the first 2:12.

Cabrillo played well in spurts, but had no answer for 6'-4" 190 lb Aaron Lowell who was incredible. Don't be surprised if you hear that name on a future USA squad. When Lowell was drawing defenders, Trent Rubio was usually available to shoot.

Offensively there was a lot of this -
and this -

Conqs: Goals - #3 Noah Caro 2, #12 Eduardo Cadenas 2, #11 Nick Matullis 1. Saves - #1A Sam Reep - 6.

Blackhawks: Goals - #4 Aaron Lowell 7, #10 Trent Rubio 7, #9 1, #5 1, #2 1, #6 1. Saves - #1 Amory Sommaripa 6, #1A Nick Sloan 1.

At times it did seem like they were launching fireballs.

#1 Seed Palm Desert 16, Santa Ynez 1
[SY 0,1,0,0 - 1   PD 2,4,5,5 - 16]
The Goalkeeper play in Game 1 was very good. The level in this one verged on the spectatular, with both Jordon Yarnell (SY) and Zach Rhodes (PD) stopping several point-blank shots. The problem for Yarnell and the Pirates was that the Aztecs launched a whole lot more shots.

The GK play contributed to a slow start to the scoring, as 6 saves were recorded, along with several shots off the posts and crossbar, before PD finally put a crooked number on the board with 1:45 to go in the first. That opened the floodgates and the Pirates were washed away.

The Pirates only tally was recorded with 2:45 left in the 2nd, when an entry pass by Sam Pappas was neatly tipped into the net by John Lastra.

Palm Desert was led by Grant Stein, a lefty who befuddled the Pirates with an array of shots, and Ryan Sawyer. Sawyer, who also contributed on the offensive end, was outstanding defensively, with a half dozen steals, other forced turnovers, field blocks, etc. .

Pirates: Goals - #17 John Lastra 1. Saves - #1 Jordon Yarnell 11.

Aztecs Goals - #15 Grant Stein 7, #10 Ryan Sawyer 3, #7 Michael Van Weiren 2, #8 Augie Sullivan 2, #16 Andrew Wahlstrom 2. Saves - #1 Zach Rhodes 13.
