Luken Remembers Vargas' Role vs. Royals

Lompoc High football coach ROBIN LUKEN pointed out a relatively unsung hero of the Braves’ first victory last Friday night--linebacker FAVI VARGAS, pictured here.

In the hoopla over BOBBY COLLINS’ 194 yards rushing and tackle GILBERTO RIOS’ four sacks it was overlooked that Vargas tied Rios for defensive points assigned by the coaching staff after watching film of the game. And right behind those two pointgetters was big #70 SAUL DOMINGUEZ, the tackle on the other side from Rios.

Luken also praised his offensive line which opened the holes for Collins. “They did a pretty good job,” Luken said. Asked if there was any one of the five who stood out, Luken said there was not. “They all did a good job,” he insisted. “They’re getting better.”

Luken said the best part of the victory was the camaraderie the team displayed on the field. “The last couple of years we haven’t had that,” he noted. Still needing work is pass defense and clarity between linebackers and defensive ends regarding who covers who, the coach added.

Injuries will sideline two Braves Friday night when LHS hosts Dos Pueblos. Wingback BRANDON ALONZO will be out with a sprained ankle and center ANDREW VAN DYKE will sit with a patellar tendon problem, both until the Righetti game. Van Dyke will be replaced by THOMAS McCAFFREY. Alonzo’s spot will be taken by a trio of DAVID MAGANA, SCOTT AGUAILAR and MASSON BLOW.

Luken said the trick to stopping Dos Pueblos is quarterback Gary Braun who ran for five yards per carry against Cabrillo and connected on eight of 17 passing. “We’ve got to stop him,” Luken said. “He’s a pretty good athlete and he does a lot of things well.”

Game time is 7:30.
