Conq Shock

The local 2013-2014 School Year high school sports season got underway on Thursday, with the first games that officially count being tallied by the two Valley High Schools 'Frosh' Football squads. There were also scrimmages at all three levels for both Girls Volleyball programs.

The big news was the stunning debut on the road by the Cabrillo Freshman Football Team.

Football:
Cabrillo 60 at San Marcos 0 [FR 4 pm] at Warkentin Stadium

CHS Frosh Head Coach Brad Rudolph passed along this game report -
Markell Mallard started things off with a 67 yard touchdown on the opening play from scrimmage that started a huge game for Cabrillo's first game of the season. Cameron Hudspeth had a great game with 2 touchdowns and multiple tackles on defense.  Mason Villa and Caleb Marshall dominated the defensive side of the ball with 7 tackles for loss combined.  Jordan Trimble had 5 tackles on special teams and several on defense.  5 other players to include Mason Villa, Caleb Marshall, Jordan Trimble, Elijah Mayhew, and Cody Perry scored touchdowns for Cabrillo.

Arroyo Grande 20 vs Lompoc 6 [FR 4 pm] at Huyck Stadium

Meanwhile at Huyck, the Braves played a feisty AG Eagles group that was looking to maintain the level set by last years 8-1 unit. Kameron Davis hit Ben Odom for about 10 yards and a score to send the game to halftime knotted at 6 all. Unfortunately, Lompoc couldn't quite keep up with the speed of the Eagles Cameron Johnston. He had several long runs to set up a short passing TD late in the 3rd Quarter, and had a 44yd jaunt to the endzone to close the scoring early in the 4th.

Both Teams are on the road next Thursday -

Cabrillo at Righetti while Lompoc heads over to the Central Valley (Yea, 5 hr bus ride) for a contest with Frontier HS in Bakersfield.

Girls Volleyball
Righetti at Cabrillo [FR 4p, JV 5p, V 6p] SCRIMMAGE- NO SCORE

The Cabrillo gym became a volleyball laboratory of sorts on Thursday evening. Diana Strasbaugh brought a Righetti team over to the Valley that is almost evenly divided between the new and the 'old' - just like the Conquistadors. The varsity gals battled it out over the course of three 20-minute periods with the early advantage going the Warriors way, but Cabrillo pulled even in the 2nd and 'won' the 3rd.

While each team played well at times, both coaches, Strasbaugh & CHS Assistant Cody Hilliard, commented on the need for their respective charges to improve their communication, teamwork, and the integration of the new players. In addition, it was noted that Righetti needed work on their blocking & Cabrillo on their overall consistency.

Some of the 'Old-timers' say "Hi!"

Although, CHS Head Coach Jim Hilliard was out of town on business, the rest of the staff filled in quite well, and the team received moral support from a number of recent graduates including 2013 star Lauren Pluim.

Lauren, now a freshman on the CP-SLO Women's Volleyball Team, has worked her way past the knee problems she experienced in recent years, but a new problem has emerged. At a practice session she took a ball to the head and was rendered unconscious, so she is now on the NCAA concussion protocol.

The team starts its season 30 Aug at the Colorado St tournament & she, understandably, was not selected for the 12-player travel squad. She might be out a while, and since there are 4 Middle Blockers on the 18 member team - including 2 seniors, there is some speculation that she might be red-shirted this year.

Lompoc at St Joseph [FR 4p, JV 5p, V 6p] SCRIMMAGE-NO SCORE

No Information Yet Received.

The official action for the Girls starts next Thursday (5 Sep):
San Luis Obispo at Cabrillo [FR 4p, JV 5p, V 6p]
Righetti at Lompoc [FR 4p, JV 5p, V 6p]
