It was a rather dreary, overcast day in the Lompoc Valley on Wednesday. The mid-afternoon winds appeared just long enough to push the marine layer over the top of everything. Thus insuring that the girls tennis match postponed from yesterday would finish, albeit in exiting fashion, in impending darkness. The deepest gloom in the valley, however, was emanating from the City of Lompoc Aquatic Center [COLAC].
LPL Boys Water Polo
Many Cabrillo Conquistador supporters had somewhat discounted the warning signs this year. An early 13-8 loss to the SY Pirate squad at the Conejo Valley Classic ? Three kids were out taking the ACT. Similar or slightly better results for Santa Ynez in the SLO & Oxnard Tournaments and a higher CIF ranking ? Well, the Pirates are good, but the King's of LPL polo are the Conqs - and they will be until someone knocks them off. Then came the 14-13 loss on the road to the Nipomo Titans. Hey, anyone can have a bad day, and they got off to a slow start in that one. This one ? An overtime loss at home? *Crickets*
Cabrillo, of course, is not done. There is one more round of games in the LPL round-robin duals, with Nipomo facing the Pirates, Cabrillo taking on Santa Maria, and Lompoc challenging Morro Bay, but the Conqs are almost certain to finish in 3rd place in the regular season. Then comes the LPL Tourney, where who knows what could happen. The crown has not yet been knocked completely off, but it is certainly askew.
Santa Ynez 8, Cabrillo 7 [SD-OT] {Story}
It took 7 periods, and sudden death, but a winner finally emerged.
Aaron Hay put Cabrillo on the board first, but the teams see-sawed back and forth in the opening period - each recieving goals from 3 different players for a 3-all tie. Adam Parlato scored twice in the second for the Pirates, but Hay netted another to cut the deficit to 5-4 at the half.
Cabrillo surged to a 7-5 third period lead with Emmett Hill's 2nd, and numbers 2 & 3 from Marcus Thiele, but, in the final minute, Luke Lastra hit his 2nd of the game to pull the Pirates within one.
The fourth stanza saw the Conqs return to a familiar refrain in this one - drilling shots off the net posts, meanwhile Santa Ynez was rifling shots off Cabrillo Goalie Felix Talkin, who was impressive. One of those 'posters' was on a 5-meter penalty shot early in the period. The Pirates later took advantage of a similar opportunity, as Elijah Ozimec buried his second in the net mid-way through the quarter to tie the game at 7 apiece.
There was no scoring in either 3-minute half of the regular overtime, which necessitated a third extra session - Sudden death. Cabrillo controlled the ball for much of the period, as they had since halftime, but a rebound after another shot hit the cage led to a SY fast break. That allowed Lastra was able to beat Talkin at point-blank range with the game-winner.
Santa Ynez: Goals - Luke Lastra 3, Adam Parlato 2, Elijah Ozimec 2, Luke Barber 1. Blocks - William Mann 6 .
Cabrillo: Goals - Marcus Thiele 3, Aaron Hay 2, Emmett Hill 2.

Cabrillo 7, Santa Ynez 3
The first period was very reminiscent of the varsity game - the Pirates opened the scoring, but neither team could get more than a goal ahead as the teams swapped goals and the lead, settling for a 3-3 tie. The Conqs took the lead for good with two unanswered goals in the second, and replicated the feat in the third quarter. Both units had scoring chances late, but could not convert. Cabrillo goalie Gavin Kilcoyne making consecutive great stops in the fourth.

The Cabrillo tennis team was bailed out, in part, by a helpful stranger passing through; exchange student Magdalena Fabikova swept, providing one of the two main impetūs for victory over the surprisingly salty Lompoc Braves. Even then, it was close - real close. The other factor ? Three sets went to extra games, one per round, with the Conqs winning all three. Cabrillo, holding a one set advantage also won the last three sets decided.
The two teams tied 3-3 in round 1, with the Conqs taking the first of those crucial contests - a 7-5 decision in the match-up of the #3 doubles. The Conqs #1 duo stopped the hosts #2's for a 4-2 second round margin, but the best match of the afternoon was in third round singles.
Nicole Nomany (LHS) and Nikki Piertsegaele (CHS) staged a classic - at 4-3, first one then the other took consecutive games, before ending up tied at 6-6. In the tiebreaker, Piertsegaele raced out to a 4-0 lead, they split two points, then engaged in a massive 40+ stroke rally eventually won by the visitor - who also captured the set.
Standouts for the Braves were Cera Mitchell/ Julie Abrego who swept three set, and Sameeha Husayn who took two sets. Lompoc tweaked its line-up a bit, moving Ashala Martin to #3 singles and filling her spot on the #2 doubles pair with frosh Marielle Tabin.
Cabrillo: Singles - Magdalena Fabikova 3-0 (6-4, 6-0, 6-1), Ashley Bowman 2-1 (3-6, 6-2, 6-4), Nikki Peirtsegaele 1-2 (1-6, 7-6 [7-1], 4-6). Doubles - Bree Piper-Williams/ Kaitlin Phillips 2-1 (3-6, 7-5, 6-0); Alena Taber/ Andrianna Siefe 1-2 (2-6, 3-6, 6-2); Lauren Dalton/ Julie de Vonage 2-1 (4-6, 6-0, 7-5).
Lompoc: Singles - Sameeha Husayn 2-1 (4-6, 6-3, 6-1), Nicole Nomany 0-3 (0-6, 2-6, 6-7[1-7]), Ashala Martin 1-2 (1-6, 4-6, 6-4). Doubles - Cera Mitchell/ Julie Abrego 3-0 (6-3, 6-2, 6-4); Emily Gracyk/ Marielle Tabin 1-2 (5-7, 6-3, 0-6); Amargiete Larios/ Catalina Perez 0-3 (0-6, 2-6, 5-7).

Doug Meeder replaced his entire doubles roster in the 3rd round and the extremely inexperienced Braves managed to take one set from the substitutes.
