Still Undefeated

Steve Haskins, Cabrillo Frosh Football Head Coach, pauses while collecting equipment after Thursday's 29-7 victory over Lompoc, to talk about the game.

Frosh Football
He has been a coach for a long time. Various sports, various levels; wrestling's paperwork assistant, Varsity Football Head Coach. Praised, disparaged, ignored, often unappreciated, but always remaining calm, gentlemanly, affable, and studious - as befitting a teacher of economics. Thursday afternoon we witnessed the Steve Haskins equivalent of a wild emotional outburst - "I WIIILL sleep well tonight". His freshman outfit had just defeated the visiting Lompoc Braves 29-7 to remain undefeated (7-0) on the season. The prevailing attitude on the home sideline, however, seemed more about relief than celebration as the Conquistadors were held well under their 48.8 ppg average and gave up their first points in three games.

The loss drops the Braves to 3-3, and breaks a two game win streak for Lompoc. Each team has two games remaining, both will face Santa Maria (Lompoc on the 28th, Cabrillo on Nov. 4th), before meeting in the "Little Big Game" season finale.

The Conq squad won, according to Haskins, because of "a total team effort". "We have running back by committee, Bryce Moses is our workhorse, (Alex) Greene has speed outside, (Nate) Tulloch & (Charles) Clardy both have speed and good hands. The offensive line did a tremendous job - they blocked well, they were fired up, and they just got after it. The defense played well." They also have a pretty darn good ball coach or two.

Speaking of good coaches .... Lompoc's Head Coach, Paul Terrones, a much younger version of Haskins, was disappointed, but philosophical. "We made a lot of little mistakes, and they added up. We showed we could play with them, we just have to fix the little things." Both coaches will, no doubt, be wielding their teacher's red pens over this mid-term, and looking for improvement before the November 11th, rematch final.

Game Recap
Cabrillo 29, Lompoc 7
The first quarter was scoreless, and dominated by a long (c. 8 min) Lompoc drive, but it was Cabrillo that broke the blank early in the second. A 31 yard pass to Jacob Heath set up a 2 yard TD run by Alex Green, but the extra point attempt was blocked. The Conquistador's 6-0 lead held through to halftime.

At the start of the 3rd period, the Cabrillo coaches were concerned. They were mostly worried about whether the kids were paying attention - "I've got 4th-stringers coming up to me and saying 'Can I go in now coach.' " said one assistant.

The starters stayed in, and they were rewarded when the O-line parted the blue sea for Bryce Moses to gallop up the middle for 47 yards and a TD on the opening possession of the half. The Conqs went for two, and Alex Green ran it in to make the score 14-0. Lompoc then went 3 & out, and punted, but Cabrillo muffed the punt and the Braves recovered deep in Conq territory. A few plays later, Jordan Pickles hit Vincent Raya with a TD pass. The EP was just over the crossbar, and the Braves were with-in seven points (14-7).

Cabrillo went 3 & out on their ensuing possession, but Lompoc returned the earlier favor, and muffed the punt. The Conqs recovered, and given a reprieve, took full advantage. They drove 76 yards, compiled 5 first downs, burned time off the clock, and capped it off with a 4 yard Alex Green TD run about halfway though the fourth quarter. Chase Dalton's EP kick put the home team up 21-7.

The Braves went for it on 4th & 2, the next time out, but came up short. Cabrillo took over at the Braves 33, picked 2 first downs, and then Charles Clardy reverse converted a 3rd & goal into a 4 yard TD run. The EP attempt was blocked, but the Braves were flagged for roughing, so the Conqs went for two. Alex Green was delegated the job, and again delivered the deuce for a 29-7 lead.

The Braves took to the air on the first play from scrimmage of the subsequent drive, but the pass was picked off by Nate Tullock. Cabrillo picked up three 1st downs, and took a knee - ballgame.

Santa Ynez Pirates finally put it all together in the final tournament carding a season nrecord 199 to secure the LPL crown. Three Pirates scored in the 30's, but that was not enough to derail Cabrillo's Morgan Salm. She took Medalist honors (again) by tallying a 35 - tying her season low. Not surprisingly Ms. Salm was also named LPL MVP.

Lompoc's Kaleigh Goethe (41), Julieta Solis (46), both posted their first scores of the season below 50.
