The 11-man football playoffs are just getting started, and 8-man just kicked off last week, but most fall sports teams will wrap up CIF-SS action this weekend.
Cross Country will have a considerable number of squads in action at the Southern Section finals at MtSAC, with only a few advancing to state. Boys Water Polo has three Ventura County teams vying for Championships on Saturday, but only the Santa Ynez Pirates are representing SB/SLO. The Girls Golf season has concluded, and no area teams remain in the Girls Volleyball playoffs.
In Girls Tennis, the Santa Barbara Dons and the Cate Rams both fell on Thursday, once again leaving Santa Ynez as the sole area representative. The Individual Championships (Singles & Doubles) start on Friday with several area players participating..

CIF Southern Section Football Playoffs
With the 8-man competition already underway, the 11-man playoffs get started this weekend, the primary match of local interest is the Lompoc Braves hosting the El Segundo Eagles at Huyck Stadium on the Lompoc High School campus. And, of course, Lompoc Locker Room will be there with a live audio only webcast available at www.cityoflompoc.com/taptv or on Comcast Cable channel 23.
At 6-1, El Segundo was cruising along through the season with only a 29-21 loss to a good Oak Park team to blemish their record. Then disaster struck - team focal point (QB, FS, P, K, PR, KR, etc) Grant Palmer (6-0, 180, Sr.) dislocated his shoulder while making a tackle on their initial defensive series of the North [Torrance] game.
Palmer had just taken the Eagles on a 10-play, 63 yard TD drive and kicked the extra point fo a 7-0 lead. Kickoff man Adam Hobbs hit a 42 yard FG in the 2nd quarter, but from that time El Segundo has been outscored 69-13. North came back for a 14-10 win, and the Eagles also lost their next two - 17-10 at Centennial [Compton] and a 38-3 blowout at South [Torrance].
Palmers' best friend, TE Nigel Nootbar, has filled in some at QB, but since he is far-and-away the leading receiver on the team (52-874yds, 11 TD vs. 16-203, 3 TD), most of the QB duties have fallen to frosh Daniel Zeman (5-9, 140). Palmer was also the leading rusher (68-567 yds, 8.3 ave., 9 TD), now RB Trevor Thompkins (106-455, 4.29 ave., 5 TD) is the active leader.
Lompoc is led by QB Abie Luna, who resumed the position after Evan Aguilar went down with a knee injury. {Update: Alan Hunt reports in his SBNP column that Evan Aguilar is back & will start at Free Safety tonight.} Luna's primary duty is, of course, to give the ball to the two-headed rushing monster that is the Marcel Blow (128-994, 7.77, 8 TD)/ Jordan Collins (100-779, 7.79, 12 TD) tag-team parnership. When they get tired in come Lavon Coleman (48-508, 10.58, 5 TD) and Taylor Cornejo (47-351, 7.47, 5 TD).
The Braves do throw the ball occasionally, usually to Drew Sapp (19-340, 17-9, 5 TD), but you can't sleep on Lavon Haynes (8-178, 22.25), Colton Concellos (5-93, 18.60, 1 TD), or TE Zach Powell (2-76, 38.0, 2 TD) either.
