Black & Blue Basketball Bash [31 Jan]

Friday, 31 January, 2014

Remember the name Bella Almanza, 'cause in the words of one recent teenage commentator - "She be a straight-up baller." The grammer might not be perfect, but the concept is sound, very, very, sound.

[Preliminary. Esp. much more JV & Frosh]

It was pretty much everything Lompoc/Cabrillo match-ups should be. Large rowdy crowds, intense competition, some excellent play, and a chance for both sides to claim victory. The varsity squads split, the Lompoc girls won both their games, and the Cabrillo boys were 2-1.

Boys Varsity: Cabrillo 59, Lompoc 51

Cabrillo at Lompoc

[Lower Levels at Cabrillo]

Lompoc 57, Cabrillo 47

[Lom 7,14,20,16 - 57 Cab 9,14,10,14 - 47]

Following halftime, Lompoc played much better. They had a big 2nd half, especially the 3rd quarter, to blow open a tight contest.

In the first half, the Braves shot just 25% (5-20) from 2PT range and 33% (2-6) from the line, but were able to keep pace with Cabrillo by hitting all 3 of their trey attempts. After the main break, those numbers improved to 42% (10-24) and 80% (16-20) respectively.

In contrast, Cabrillo was cold all night - 26% (10-39) on 2-point shots, 36% (5-14) on treys, and 52% (12-23) from the line.

It wasn't just the Lompoc shooting that improved, however, they also improved in rebounding (15 to 25), assists (8 to 12), and reduced turnovers (9 to 7).

Lompoc's wing players, Rylee Sager and Arianna Espinosa fueled the Braves effort with a combined 27 points, with Sager adding 10 rebounds and 4 assists. Chrisshnay Brown, in the post, vacuumed up 13 boards, and had 6 points and 2 blocks.

Jenna Daley (15) and Devan McCune (13) led the way for Cabrillo, with Gaby Baumgardner chipping in 9 more (7 in the 4th).

Junior Varsity

Lompoc 38, Cabrillo 15

[Lom 12,7,9,10 - 38  Cab 0,6,3,6 - 15]

This one could have been much worse. Lompoc scored the first 14 points of the game and could easily have had 10-15 more during that span, but missed on far too many opportunities for scores.

Bella Almanza dominated the contest from the point, scoring (c. 14) almost at will, and frequently making superb passes that too often did not become the assists they could, and should, have been. She also led a harassing Brave defense that completely stymied Cabrillo in the first half. At times, it seemed like there were two or three of her out on the floor. Mariah Zazueta and Destiny Goggins also had good performances for Lompoc

Haleigh Batty (4 points) played well for Cabrillo, as did Leydi Urdiano (4 points). Urdiano got the Conqs off the schneid with a pair of FTs at 4:36 of the 2nd period. Cabrillo was 7-14 from the free-throw line, with 2 field goals in each half.

Cabrillo at Lompoc

Cabrillo 59, Lompoc 51
[Cab 24,9,12,14 - 59  Lom 11,18,16,6 - 51]

In a combative contest (40+ fouls, 4 technicals) the Braves climbed back from a big early deficit, and even briefly held a 1 point lead in the 3rd, but ran out of steam in the 4th. An Aaron Abayari trey with a couple of minutes left on the clock, gave Cabrillo a 5-point lead and seemingly put the nail in the coffin.

The Conqs received 7 points from Josh Harris in the 1st to take a 13 point lead, but Lompoc had a burst in the 2nd in the form of 10 points from Torey Sims, who added another 11 in the 3rd. But the Braves only had two other players score field goals (Osegueda, Bailey - 2 each) in the 2nd half.

The Braves have been streaky shooters throughout the season, and on Friday they were down - hitting 0-7 from 3-point range and were 15-28 (54%) from the line. Cabrillo was only slightly better - scoring 35% (7-20) on treys, and 53% (10-19) from the charity stripe.

With just two weeks remaining in LPL action, the victory clinched at least a share of the league title for the Conqs.

Cabrillo is slated to have three home games and a BYE to finish the regular season.  [Templeton, Santa Maria, Nipomo, BYE]

Lompoc concludes the regular season with 3 road games versus the bottom-dwellers in the league and a home game next Friday against the Santa Ynez Pirates who moved into 2nd place with a win.

Junior Varsity

Lompoc 61, Cabrillo 43

[Lom 7,13,16,25 - 61  Cab 10,14,5,14 - 43]

Frosh coach Mark Tasch, who filled in for JV head man Brian Sharpe, was a bit surprised that Cabrillo was up 4 at halftime. It took the Braves offense a while to get started, but once going it was like an avalanche. Lompoc scored just 7 in the 1st, but increased its total in each quarter, scoring 25 in the 4th.
One difference for Cabrillo was fouls. They committed 7 in the opening half, but nearly doubled that amount (13) in the second. This was especially troubling since Mason
Villa was out for Cabrillo who consequently had just 7 players available.

The number of fouls was largely due to Lompoc using their ability to penetrate off the dribble and an increased number of fastbreaks resulting from heightened defensive pressure.

In the first half Cabrillo was also able to keep Trevaughn Ross mostly bottled up with 4 in the 1st, and 3 in the 2nd period. He got loose for 10 in the 3rd, and had 4 in the 4th before being pulled. The Braves had 8 players score in the 4th quarter.

Conqs : Team - FT 57% (
12-21).
Joseph Stavoli 5 [1-1 FT]; Benjamin Gonzalez 5 (1x3) [2-2 FT]; Cole Becker 15 (1x3) [4-6 FT]; Isaac Pabon-Bustamante 1 [1-3 FT]; Isaiah Bowman 10 (7 1Q) (1x3) [1-2 FT]; Jonathan Greshle 3 [3-6 FT]; Michael Morris 4 [0-1 FT].

Braves : Bradley Osborne 11 (6 2Q) [3-5 FT]; Darren Munoz 3 (1x3); Kammeron Davis 3 (1x3) [0-2 FT]; Creighton Morales 1; Rauly Yanez 4 [0-2 FT]; Filip Krajic 6 (All 2H); Marcus Nix 6 [4-8 FT]; Trevaughn Ross 21 [3-8 FT]; Ben Odam 6 (All 4Q); Christian Mactezulua (sp ?) 1 [1-4 FT - all 4Q].

Freshman

Cabrillo 51, Lompoc 38
[Cab 5,12,22,12 - 51  Lom 10,11,11,6 - 38]

The Cabrillo frosh may have been stopping by the wrestling room next to the gym after practice recently - they certainly pulled off a reversal. Lompoc seemed to be in control with a 21-17 lead at halftime, but the Conqs put up 22 in the 3rd and outscored the Braves 34-17 in the 2nd half for an easy win at home.

Actually, the comeback started in the 1st half, when both sides had a series of point bursts. The game was even at 3 for a while in the middle of the initial period, but Cabrillo got a bucket to go up 5-3 at the 3:31 mark. Lompoc followed by scoring 7 in a row in the final 2:37 for a 10-5 advantage a the break.

The Conqs scored the first 4 of the 2nd quarter to cut the margin to a single point, but the Braves pulled back out to a 7 point (21-14) lead, before Cabrillo closed out the half with the last 3 tallies.
