3rd place [3 p.m.]: Semifinal Losers -
#3 Morro Bay vs. #5 Lompoc

Championship game [4 p.m.]: Semifinal Winners -
#2 Cabrillo (4-1) vs  # 1 Santa Ynez

Who'da thunked it? Certainly not Lompoc Head Coach Tyler Emery - "At the start of the season, if you had told me that we would be playing for a spot in CIF, I would have laughed."

The Braves, however, may have the last laugh after advancing to the 3rd place game of the LPL Tournament against the also somewhat improbable Morro Bay Pirates. A contest billed several years ago as being between a "team without a team" & the "team without a pool" could soon be inaccurate on both counts.

Lompoc for many years, starting in the late 60's, had a team. But with coaching changes, dwindling interest, and other problems, the program faded away. Just two years ago the Braves did not have a team, only reviving a JV squad last year.

In addition, the Pirates received some good news outside of the pool on Tuesday - the apparent passage (71% Yes, early) of Prop D, a San Luis Coastal USD bond measure which proponents hope will help fund a pool at Morro Bay High School. Currently, Pirate Aquatic participants have to travel to Richardson Park in Cayucos or Cuesta College get shared time in the pool.

Quarterfinals

Lompoc 9, Santa Maria 8
[Lom 3,4,0,2 - 9  SM 3,1,3,1 - 8]

This one put the Braves up 8-7.

In the Competition Pool at the CoLAC on Tuesday, Lompoc played one of their best games of the season to outlast the Saints, putting them in the running for a CIF berth, and potentially causing some re-scheduling of practice times for the girls squad which has just began formally preparing for their upcoming season.

The last minute of each half was good to the 'visiting' Braves, they scored twice in the final 55 seconds of the first half.  And, after Steven Hernandez put Lompoc up 9-8 with 3:34 left in the 4th period, Phoenix Herrigal held off a furious Saint barrage in the last minute of the second to preserve the win.

Without question, the easiest of the 4 stops Phoenix Herrigel had in the last minute, but this one ended the match.

Braves: GoalsJavier Hernandez 5, Bryce Mindora 2, Misael Evans, Steven Hernandez (GW). GoaltendingPhoenix Herrigal 12 saves.

Saints : Goals/Etc. - Jesse Sanchez 6 steals, 2 assists, goal; Ricky Ortiz 4 goals; Joseph Balderama 1 goal, 2 assists; Soren Kringle goal; Marcus Pienado goal. Goaltending - Jesus Vital 15 blocks, 2 steals.

Lompoc faces Morro Bay  in the third place game on Thursday at 3 p.m. The winner of that contest earns the LPL's third playoff spot. Santa Maria plays Nipomo for 5th place at 2 p.m,

Morro Bay 9, Nipomo 2
[MB 2,1,3,3 - 9  Np 1,0,1,0 - 2]

The Titans took the early lead with a goal at 5:23 of the 1st, but Morro Bay netted one just 10 seconds later and struck again with a 2 minutes left in the quarter. They added another goal just a minute before the half-time break, and out-scored Nipomo 6-1 in the 2nd half.

Jack Krull couldn't quite handle this one which made Luke Sparks (#4) happy.

Pirates: Goals - Travis Chirman 4, Ryan Kitzman 3, Joseph Ramos, Austin Park. Goaltending - Jack Krull c.6 saves.

Titans: Goals - Luke Sparks, Jacob Dillinger. Goaltending - Luke Wilenius c.8 saves.

Semifinals

Santa Ynez 19, Lompoc 7
[Lom 1,1,3,2 - 7  SY 4,7,5,2 - 19]

Braves came out with some intensity -

Lompoc made it interesting for the first 5 minutes, but then the Pirates figured out that they actually need to play. They cranked the dial up to 11 in the last 2 minutes of the first (3 goals) and the entire 2nd period (7 goals). The Braves played better in the second half, but had some lapses.

One of the few -

BravesGoals - Javier Hernandez 3, Bryce Mindoro 2, Waite, Weisz Goaltending - Phoenix Herrigal 11 saves.

Saints : Goals - Bryson Valencia 5, Greg Sparke 3, John Lastra 3, Burt Warn 2, Parker Maccianti 2, Gabe Clear 2, Nolan Morrison, Steven Sneddon.  Goaltending - Jordan Yarnell 10 saves.

Cabrillo 7, Morro Bay 4 (OT)
[Cab 1,1,2,0,2,1 - 7  MB 1,2,1,0,0,0 - 4]

After both teams were scoreless for the final 1:34 of the 3rd, and the entire 7 minutes of the 4th quarter, Cabrillo broke loose for 2 goals in the 1st 3 minute OT period, and one in the 2nd OT period.

For most of the game it was a struggle between good defense and indifferent offense. Each team struck early in the 1st, and Morro Bay added 1 late in the 2nd to take a 2-1 advantage at halftime.

Just 32 seconds into the 3rd Morro Bay scored to make the margin two points, and the Cabrillo supporters were getting a bit antsy. The Conqs needn't have worried though, Cabrillo struck 23 seconds later, and added goals at the 4:31 & 2:50 marks for a 4-3 lead. The Pirate tally at 1:34 knotted the contest at 4 apiece for the remainder of regulation.

Ben "The Beast" Wulfestieg had a great defensive game against the Pirate 2-meter man & season top scorer, Travis Chirman. It was part of a defensive effort in which at least 7 Conqs had steals.

First one in OT -

2nd One in OT -

Cabrillo : Goals - Ben Wulfestieg 2, Trevor Whitham 2, Deven Rosales 1, Ryan Marin 1, Anthony Dickson 1. GoaltendingSam Reep 13.

Morro Bay : Goals (4) - Ryan Kitzman 3, Joseph Ramos. Goaltending - Jack Krull 14 saves.
