Big Smile

Boys Water Polo

at the COLAC
Cabrillo 14, Paso Robles 8
C: 2,6,3,3-14
PR: 0,3,4,1-8

The initial 5 minutes of the 1st period were spent swimming up and down the pool, trying to take each others mettle - then the Conquistadors Eduardo Cardenas decided to take over the game. The Cabrillo junior has really started to show some superior skills in the pool and Friday was no exception. He scored 4 goals in 3:05 utilising 4 different types of shots, including an almost perfect move off a break-away. A break-away that resulted from his classic pick-pocket steal at the point. Thirty seconds later, Nick Matulis got in on the goal-scoring action, and Cabrillo was up 5-0. They would never be seriously threatened the rest of the way.

One of the reasons for that control was the aggressiveness and total ownership of the Cabrillo cage by Goal Keeper Gavin Kilcoyne. After giving up some rebound goals because the defense took off following a shot, he just started closing out nearly every shooter within the 5 meter area, and the Bearcats were reduced to perimeter potshots. It is also possible that some of them were distracted by the enthusiastic and belly-paint wearing Conq Girls Water polo squad behind the goal.

Head Coach Joel Jory was happy to see the "great job" done by his GK, which he chalked up to Kilcoyne's increasing experience and maturity in the position. However, if you want to see Jory smile, a really big smile - ask him if he's glad Eduardo Cardenas came out for Water Polo.

Conquistadors: Goals - Eduardo Cardenas 6, Nick Matulis 3, Noah Caro 2, Ben Wulfstieg 1, Alfredo Navarro 1. Steals - Cardenas 6. Saves - 12.

C: 3, 1, 1, 3 - 8
PR: 2, 4, 3, 2 -11

Cabrillo took a 3-2 lead in the first, then sort of disappeared for a while. They had a late surge to cut the margin to two (10-8), but never caught up. Among other things, Coach Jeff Dacus wasn't thrilled with the squads "on-the-ball" defense.

Cabrillo: Goals - Steven Eisen 3, Gerardo Diaz 2, 1 each by - Connor Rowe, Saxon Morris, Jack Rhodes.
Bearcats: Goals - 3 each by Baker & Junker, 2 by Coffey, 1 each by Dodds, Vallejos, and Chambers. (1st names not provided).
