Girls Volleyball

Tuesday, 18 Sept. 2012
at Paisola Pavillion/Bryan Ayer Court
Lompoc 3, Santa Maria 0
[25-23, 25-13, 25-16]

After a see-saw and very competitive 1st game, it was a relatively easy win for the home-standing Braves.
In that 1st game there were 5 lead changes and 9 ties as each team put together several mini-runs. Lompoc created a 15-11 advantage with an ace, but turned the serve over on the next point with a service error. The Saints worked their way back - taking leads of 18-16, and 21- 18. Then a combination of Lompoc hitting and Santa Maria handling errors allowed the Braves to outscore the Saints 7-2 down the stretch.

In Game 2, Lompoc quickly took a 4-1 lead, and although the Saints were able to close to within 2-3 points a few times, the last at 9-7. The Braves then hit the gas with serving runs by Micalah Herrigal, Lauren Powell, and Heidi Chavez pushing the score to 21-10. Lompoc then mixed aces, kills, & service errors to swap points for a while, but closed it out with a kill by Powell.

The Braves were helped by a pair rotation violation penalties that were odd, at least in the opinion of Santa Maria Head Coach Kurt Mahelona. "They called a violation on us and messed us all up, and then called another one on us and put us back in the same rotation we were in before they called the first one." There were a number of the somewhat rare violations called on both teams during the match.

Lompoc again took an early lead in Game 3, but squandered several opportunities, allowing Santa Maria to close to within two (9-7). A flurry of misadventures followed, with neither side able to string much together, and the Saints still down two (14-12). It fell to the Braves Carrie Rodriguez to restore order from the service line, which she did - winning 5 consecutive points. It was soon 23-14, but Lompoc stumbled again at the end  until Chyanne Thomas ended the match with a kill.

Braves Head Coach Aaron Batula wasn't ready to pass out a bunch of gold stars just yet though - "Well, we played better and were more focused. And we served really well, but we were a bit sloppy and we need to clean that up." One thing he did like was that the girls "Maintained composure and played very well through the noise." Mahelona was more succint - "I wish we had shown up.", adding "We just weren't ready mentally.".

Santa Maria did not furnish any stats, although several girls, including Mana Onofre, appeared to play well.
Lompoc: Brittany Balusan 10 kills; Chyanne Thomas 9 kills; Heidi Chavez 22 assists, 4 aces; Lauren Powell 5 aces; Jenna Grossini 4 kills.

Junior Varsity/Frosh
The JV squad improved their record to 6-2 with 2-1 [25-14, 24-26, 15-5] victory over the Saints. Head Coach 'Monie' Thomas specifically noted the serving of Lexie Barbossa & Yoshi Montelongo, the hitting of Angel Lashore, the defense of Arianna Espinosa & Yolanda Aguiano, and the net game of Alivia Sawyer. The Freshmen fell in two (17-25, 8-25).

at Cabrillo
Santa Ynez 3, Cabrillo 0 [25-19, 25-17, 29-27]   STORY
The Conqs made it interesting at times, but the Pirates pulled it out.
It was a program sweep for the visiting Santa Ynez Pirates as the Frosh and JV both won 2-0.

Pirates: Kelly Krivulka 12 kills; Alexandra Carlson 34 assists; Ashley Carroll 12 digs; Susanna Cole 7 kills; Megan Schumer 5 kills; Ariel Johnson 5 kills; Kelsie Femlaid 3 kills.
Conqs: Lauren Pluim 10 kills; Fallon Wynne 6 kills; Brianna Farley 5 kills; Marissa Reyna 4 kills.

Other LPL
Templeton 3, Morro Bay 0 [25-14, 25-14, 25-16]
Eagles (5-1, 2-0 LPL): Heather Fields 10 kills, 3 aces; Autumn Russell 9 kills, 3aces; Lindsey Wyatt 20 digs, 2 aces; Sydney Roth 29 assists.

The Eagles had no trouble with this group of Pirates, but can they do anything with the other Pirates - those pesky ones from Santa Ynez ? Then there's the Nipomo Titans ...

Nipomo 3, Orcutt Academy 0 [25-15, 25-12, 25-4]
Titans (7-0): Cristina Ozzimo 27 assists, 11 aces, 17 consecutive serves in G3; Paige Waymire 14 kills, 2 aces; Sarah Stahl 13 digs; Kiana Worth 9 kills, 3 aces; Taylor Nevitt 7 aces, 6 kills.

The Titans used the LPL bye to thump the Spartans.

Girls Golf

Tuesday, 18 Sept. 2012
at the Village Country Club
CABRILLO 270, LOMPOC 334

The Conquistadors showed off their advantages in depth, experience, and home course knowledge on Tuesday - although both sides continued the trend of close inspection of the treed portions of the site. Four groups of girls completed the circuit of the front nine - three scoring groups and a group of 'alternates'. Another group (3 Conqs, 1 Brave) went the usual JV training distance of 4 holes. The 4 JV girls going the longer distance have made it interesting for both coaches in the future, since all 4 posted rounds that would have been in the scoring mix in the varsity match-up.

Karen Santamaria scored her 2nd individual win in as many rounds - shooting the only score in the 40's (49) to take Medalist Honors. Her teammate Roselei Redrick was 2nd with a 51. Saranda Vickery, who had a really nice approach shot at nine, led the Braves with a 57. Both teams also posted significantly lower totals than last Thursday's LPL meet.

Cabrillo [270]:  Jaqueline McDonough 57, Karen Santamaria 49, Roselei Redrick 51, Gaby Baumgardner 56, Kelsie Merrick 57, Christina Sawyer 61. Alternates - Raquel Caballero 61, Bailey Belluz 62.

Braves [334]: Selena Krisher 68, Nicole Flores 72, Saranda Vickery 57, Moriah Decker 71, Mackenzee Chambers 66, Celeste Kamery 72. Alternates - Ivette Ordaz 68, Jasmine Martinez 68.

Football News

Just a few notes before things get started this week:

1) The Conqs have decided to host their game this week on THURSDAY . The Frosh play at Santa Maria (4 pm), the JV (4 pm) and Varsity (7pm) at Huyck. As a further note, this game will not be broadcast on TAP-TV, but will be covered here on LLR.

2) The Lompoc games will be on Friday -JV 4 pm & Var 7 pm, with the latter being broadcast as the TAP-TV "Game of the Week".

3) It was great to see Nikko Hayes honored as Male Athlete of the Week at the NSBC Athletic Roundtable on Monday! The Lompoc senior is one of the unsung heroes of the Braves resurgence in recent years. Lompoc has tremendous depth at the running back position, many of whom are starting on defense, but who could start in the backfield for almost any other area teams. I really hope that these guys (ie Nikko Hays, Rafael Arrellano, Keith Joseph) get a looksie at the next level. Nikko was honored for last Friday's efforts when, as the Braves #4 back, behind Coleman, Cornejo, and Flores, he tore up the previously undefeated Chargers for 170 yards and 2 TD's on just 13 carries - in addition to playing his usual stellar defense.
