"It's been a while .... "

WOW !!! The folks inside Paisola Pavillion were treated to an absolute classic Tuesday night on Bryan Ayer court. Coaches, staff, fans, parents, and other folks tended to respond the same when queried about the type of victory the Braves put together in front of an enthusiastic home crowd. When was the last time Lompoc won two league games in about a week (8 days)? "Ooooh, it's been a while ....". When was the last time the Braves swept all three levels on the same evening? "Yeah, that's been a while ...." When was the last time Lompoc beat a league opponent other than Santa Maria? "That's been a while." You get the picture - it's been a while. Volleyball maven Monie Thomas did remember a sweep of all threes levels against Santa Maria last year, and Head Coach Aaron Batula eventually recalled a non-Saints league win in 2006.

As for the actual varsity match which the Braves won 3 sets to 2, the point differential was 109-108 - in favor of the Pirates. Game 1 was pivotal, giving the Braves a huge boost of confidence and displaying a resilience they have not frequently shown. Lompoc took a quick 3-0 lead, but a service error and an ace made it 3-2. Further muddling by both teams gave each side another point, before a Brittany Balusan kill ignited a 5 point run by the Braves. The Pirates tried to stop the run with a time out, but shanked the following serve. Lompoc helped them out though with two more service errors sandwitched around a Chyanne Thomas kill. The Braves were up 10-5, with 3 of the 5 Pirate points on service errors.

Lompoc scored the next three, and looked to be cruising. Nope. The Pirates had kills from 3 different players, and a serving run from Kylie Hilliard and 'boom' - it was 13-11. Lompoc time out. A pair of kills from the Braves pushed the lead back to 4, but they turned the ball over with yet another service error. The teams then exchanged big plays - a Hedi Chavez stuff followed by a Julia Cervice kill that sent Carli Watt to the line. She served the Pirates back to even at 16 all. Christiana Landthaler then had one of her 'key moment' kills, and put Thomas back to serve. She served the Braves to a 20-16 advantage, and the Pirates called their 2nd TO. Morro Bay shanked the next serve, but was finally able to stop the run with another Cervice kill. A blown pass handed it right back to the Braves, led to alternating kills by Sierra Emrick (MB) and Balusan, and a 23-18 score. The Pirates couldn't handle Lindthaler's serve and it was game point, but his one wasn't done. Sybella Paredes' serving, and kills by Emrick & Watt, plus a bobble by the Braves defense, resulted in Lompoc's 2nd time out at 24-21. Another Emrick kill, and an un-returnable serve cut it to 24-23, before a service error gave the 25th point to the Braves.

Game 2 was more to the Pirates liking. After a 1-1 tie, Morro Bay used a series of Braves mistakes to forge an 8-2 lead. Lompoc had some mini-runs, but was never able to get even, and was soon down 22-15. Kills by Lauren Powell & Thomas made it 22-17, but Watt crushed one for 23-17. Over? Not quite. A Morro Bay service error, a Powell ace, and a Thomas kill made it 23-20. A Lompoc kill went just wide to set up game point, but the Pirates gave it right back with a serve that went long (24-21). Thomas killed one for 24-22, but Cervice returned the favor to end it at 25-22.

Game 3 saw Lompoc take an early 3-1 lead only to see the Pirates tie the game at 4-4, and then surge to a 6 point advantage (12-6). The Braves, however, clawed their way back to even the contest at 18 all. It was close the rest of the way with ties at 20,21,22, and 23, but Morro Bay defensive confusion and a Heidi Chavez kill tilted the game the Braves direction.

Game 4 was a very tight contest until just before the end. Neither side had a lead larger than 2 points until Becca Davis followed her kill with an ace to put the Braves up 20-17. There had been ties at 3, 4, 7, 9, 11, 12, and 15. The Pirates called their 2nd TO after Davis' exploits, and a pair of Lompoc errors allowed the visitors back within a point. Braves TO #2. Two Maddy Bray aces and more Lompoc mistakes put Morro Bay up 23-20, before a Balusan kill stopped the run. Unfortunately, yet another service error promptly returned the point and the ball to the Pirates for set point. A Carli Watt kill took care of that, and the match was even at 2 sets apiece.

The Game 5 tiebreaker, a race to 15, also involved a type of 'call and response' see-saw action. Lompoc up 2-0, Morro Bay ties it at 2. Lompoc up 5-2, Pirates narrow it to 7-5. Lompoc leads 10-5, Morro Bay scores a pair - 10-7. Lompoc Time Out. The Braves finally pushed the score to 13-9 and a Pirate spike went long for 14-9. Surely, this one is oh-va - What ?? You have got to be kidding me !! Can you say 'service error' - 14-10. Two stuff blocks by the front line - 14-12. A Lompoc kill attempt - just wide 14-13.  Finally, "Money' Landthaler sent a deep change-up over the net that the Pirate back line couldn't handle. MATCH OVER.

The varsity match started about 50 minutes late due to the undercard running long (see below), and though the crowd had thinned somewhat by the final kill, there were plenty of folks on hand to witness one last bit of drama. A Chyanne Thomas admirer recruited a few pals to help him hold up a large sign asking her to the Homecoming Dance. She said yes, and her mother agreed - provided that she kept her grades up. Pictures were taken, and the place cleared out like a prison break. Aaron Batula was one of the last people out of the gym - the scoreboard was still on and he wanted a picture before he turned it off to put away the equipment. It had , indeed, been a while.

Braves: Chyanne Thomas 8 kills,4 aces; Brittany Balusan 12 kills; Becca Davis 19 digs; Heidi Chavez 33 assists; Christiana Landthaler 6 kills (incldg the match winner); Lauren Powell 5 kills. Chavez verged on the spectacular, giving Lompoc whatever was needed - sets, kills, serves, and perhaps most importantly calm leadership. She was also reportedly playing while quite sick.
Pirates: Kassie McClory 18 digs, Sybella Paredes 16 digs, Sierra Emrick 11 kills.

Too much Eduardo Cardenas. He had 6 goals (5 in the first half, 4 in less than 3 minutes in the 1st quarter), at least 1 assist, 8 steals, plus numerous deflections, changed shots, and a fair amount of general mayhem caused. In short, he was an offensive force, and a defensive pest. Cabrillo began extensive substitutions at the start of the 3rd period, which was also about the time that CHS Head Coach Joel Jory picked up his 'yellow card' for "too much chipping".

The game itself wasn't all that close, although the Yellowjackets scored the last 3 goals of the 2nd period to cut the margin to 2 (7-5). The visitors also netted 2 goals in the final 28 seconds of regulation to make the final 14-8. Oxnard opened the scoring, but Cabrillo tied it up 38 seconds later. The Jackets took the lead again, a few ticks under the 4 min. mark of the 1st period, but that would be their last lead of the game. Just 37 seconds later, Cardenas tied the game at 2-2 with the initial goal of his scoring onslaught, and it was 5-2 at the break.

Two more Conq goals early in the 2nd period made the gap 7-2, but Oxnard, helped by Cabrillo exclusions,  scored the last 3 of the quarter for a 7-5 halftime. Goals by Naughton, Cardenas, and Navarro (2) enabled the Conqs to forge an 11-6 lead after 3 periods, and the first 3 scores in the 4th belonged to Cabriilo as well.

Conqs: Eduardo Cardenas 6 goals, 1 assist, 8 steals; Nick Matulis 2 goals; Alfredo Navarro 2 goals; Noah Caro 2 goals; Phil Naughton 1 goal; Cannon Creese 1 goal; Gavin Kilcoyne c.12 saves.
