LPL GIRLS TENNIS
Today saw the opening salvos of the 2012 LPL campaign, with the perennial question - "Can anyone in the LPL topple the Pirates of the South?" The answer was a resounding - maybe!! Three pairs of LPL teams squared off against each other, and the 7th LPL team, Nipomo, took on Orcutt Academy. It was a truly extraordinary day for the Lompoc Braves singles tennis units as they combined to sweep both contests (18-0) while compiling a 110-26 advantage in games.

I can't tell you if Lompoc has a swinging singles scene, but the Braves have some pretty proficient singles swingers. The singles sandwich of Gracyk 1 (Emily), Marielle Tabin, and Gracyk 2 (Erica) have been stalwarts for the inexperienced Braves so far in the nascent season, but today they were outstanding. They SWEPT the singles 9-0, with a 55-16 advantage in games. That in itself would win most matches, but the developmental situation in the doubles now appears to be settling into place. Two Lompoc duos each won 2 sets, and were competitive in 2 others. Head Coach Marjie Ledgerwood said that she thought the team did "pretty well", but that she would continue to look at doubles, and hoped that the singles crew would continue to gain confidence. Daisy Lomeli and Monica Hernadez swept their three sets at #1 Doubles for the Saints.
SINGLES: Lompoc - Emily Gracyk 3-0 (6-0,6-2,6-1), Marielle Tabin 3-0 (6-1, 7-5, 6-1), Erica Gracyk 3-0 (6-2,6-0, 6-4). Santa Maria - Caija McNeil 0-3, Hannah Lindgren 0-3, Brittany Gomez 0-2, Rosielle Angkahan 0-1.
DOUBLES: Lompoc - Janett Ruiz/Mariana Soto 2-1 (4-6, 6-4,6-1), Collette Campetelli/Noemi Diaz (0-6, 6-0, 6-4), Melanie Esparza/Genesis Garza (0-6,4-6,1-6). Santa Maria - Daisy Lomeli/Monica Hernadez 3-0, Elvia Martinez/Shara Martindad 1-1, Elvia Martinez/Adela Lopez 0-1, Leslie Huitron/Jocelyn Gil 1-2.

The Braves dominated, outscoring the Saints 105- 22 in games. They did not lose a set in singles (55-10 in games) and the lone set they dropped in doubles accounted for half of their 12 games lost.
SINGLES: Sofia Carillo (2 games lost), Madi Hotchkiss (3 gms lost), Karina Cervantes (5 gms lost) all swept 3 sets.
DOUBLES: Melissa Valadez/Stephany Gutierrez 3-0 (lost 1 game), Edith Elenes/Gessell Lopez 2-1 (14-7 in games), Carmen Chavez/Ofelia Chavez 3-0 (lost 4 games)

Speaking of confidence, MaryBeth Stieber would have liked to see a bit more from her charges on Thursday. The Conqs played fairly well, but had several lapses at crucial moments that cost them some games. The Pirates looked like the LPL favorites that they are, although not entirely the full-fledged monsters of the courts they have been in recent years. Are they beatable? Yes. Can anyone in the LPL actually do it? Maybe not. Alex Siefe & Morgan Coffin won 2 sets at #2 doubles. Ricky Patel and Julie de Vonage each won singles sets.
SINGLES: Cabrillo - Kelsey Akin 0-3 (3-6,3-6,1-6); Ricky Patel 1-2 (6-1, 6-7[3-7],4-6); Julie de Vonage 1-2 (1-6,3-6,6-1). Santa Ynez - Katie Voorhis 2-1, Kat Rocha 3-0, Tyler Bunderson 2-1.
DOUBLES: Cabrillo - Audrianna LaPorte/Kayla Sandoval 0-3 (5-7,5-7,3-6); Alex Siefe/Morgan Coffin 2-1 (6-4,6-1,3-6); Maddie McDonough/Krystal De Los Reyes 0-3 (1-6,3-6,1-6). Santa Ynez - Bree Jensen/Regan Mroz 2-1, Paige Lockhart/Eliza Nash 2-1, Morgan Loughlin/Shane Sorenson 3-0.

Trent Lunceford's Greyhounds weren't quite as nervous as they seemed at Cabrillo on Tuesday night, but they still had to work for this one. Perhaps more importantly, Lompoc didn't give them a lot of help. Head Honcho Aaron Batula said the Braves have improved throughout the three matches they have played in the last three days - "We're still making too many mistakes, but we're not letting them string points together in bunches like we did a couple nights ago." He was particularly pleased by the teams improved communication on the court.
Lunceford's squad was boosted again by the play of one of his four seniors - Sofia Guerrier, an exchange student from Italy. He called her an "outstanding hitter", a description attested to by her match-high 14 kills. The 'Hounds also recieved major contributions from the 4 sophomores on the varsity [Katherine Sedley, Sabrina Degnan, Maren Cracknell, Sage Kelly] and senior all-arounder Mary Kate Evans.
The Lompoc JV won in straight sets and the Braves varsity only has 3 seniors, including a walk-on 1st year player, so this series could be real interesting in the next few years.
Atascadero - Sofia Guerrier 14 kills, Kendall Featherstone 15 digs, Sabrina Degnan 15 assists, Maren Cracknell 6 kills, Sage Kelly 12 assists.
Lompoc - Micalah Herrigel 5 kills, Brittany Balusan 2 kills, Christiana Landthaler 2 kills, Becca Davis 13 digs, Heidi Chavez 7 assists, and Carrie Rodriguez had a service ace.
Junior Varsity & Freshmen
Monie Thomas' JV squad won their 3rd consecutive match 2-0, posting another sweep. This one was 25-21, 25-23. Coach Thomas mentioned the excellent play of Yolanda Anguiano (Defense/Libero/Serving), the serving of Lexi Barbosa and Angel Lashore, and the all-around play (especially at the net) of Ariana Espinosa. The frosh lost 0-2 (8-25, 12-25).

The Conqs dropped the first two, including a blown 22-12 lead in game 2, but then ran the table, concluding with a 15-13 victory in the deciding 5th. Lauren Pluim apparently was kept out of the match. She aggrivated a lingering condition in her knee against Atascadero on Tuesday.
Cabrillo - Marissa Reyna 9 kills, Brianna Farley 8 kills, Fallon Wynne 8 kills, Jaime Miller 6 kills, Megan Love 28 digs, Nikki Friend 33 assists.
Bearcats - Molly Donovan 17 kills, Morgan Lawson 7 kills.

The Braves led 7-0 at the end of the 1st quarter, but turned a punt return, a pick-6, and lots of Torey Simms/Richard Foster offense into points in the 2nd for a 29-8 halftime advantage. Neither team scored in the 3rd, but the Panthers pushed across a TD with 1:48 left in the game. Lompoc had the ball at the PV 1 yard line with about a minute to play and twice took a knee to kill the clock.
