Cabrillo moved the ball in dribs and drabs, but was much better in the 2nd half.  Lompoc, particularly in the 2nd half, broke off chunks. The Conqs also were there own worst enemy at times, committing 11 penalties (85y) and throwing interceptions on their first two possessions of the 3rd quarter. In the second half, Cabrillo had the ball 6 times, and made at least one first down on every one of them, but in addition to the picks, they turned the ball over twice on downs.

Game 1: 5th Place:
Santa Maria  16Lompoc  8

The re-birth of the Lompoc polo program continued on Thursday. It's going to be a slow process, but the squad has improved immensely over the last 6 weeks. In this contest they were generally competitive.

Santa Maria broke from the gate early, taking a 4-0 lead in the first 6 minute, including a penalty shot goal only 89 seconds into the game. During that stretch Saints found the goal - and Lompoc found the goalie, who had 4 saves in the period. After a time out by the Braves with just under a minute left, Lompoc found the goal twice (Brown, Wills) before the quarter ended. Unfortunately, they also allowed one, and trailed 5-2 at the break.

The second period was pretty even, though Santa Maria extended its lead by 1. The 3-2 Santa Maria margin was due to a combination of good goalkeeping for the Saints and missed opportunities by Lompoc, who had a number of unforced turnovers.

The 3rd quarter continued the theme, with Santa Maria playing just a bit better than the Braves. Typical of the action was a late period lob shot from Harrison Brown, that GK John Coranar just got a finger on. The ball lifted an inch or two, caught the corner of the crossbar, and dropped straight to the water. It was halfway into the goal, and drifting further in, when Coranar flicked it out.

The Saints also out-scored Lompoc in the 4th, this time 4-3. The Braves helped out with some exclusions.
Was it a great, well played contest? No. Was it a humongous step in the right direction? Absolutely.

Lompoc [2,2,1,3 - 8]: Goals- Harrison Brown 3 [1Q c0:40, 2Q 0:19, 4Q 2:00], Matt Wills 3 [1Q 0:12, 3Q 5:42, 4Q 6:42], Jesse Sheperd 2 [2Q 4:00, 4Q 6:03]. Saves - 3.

Santa Maria [5,3,4,4 -16]: Goals - Armando Partida 4, Soren Kringel 3, Collin Lindsey 3, David Solano 3, Tony Ayala 1, Eddie Rios 1, Tim Strongssley 1. Saves - 8

Game 2: 3rd Place:
Morro Bay 9, Nipomo 8

This was an entertaining game. The Morro Bay Pirates forged a big lead, and then watched the Titans whittle it away. The Nipomo surge at the end came up just short.

The Pirates raced to a 3-0 1st quarter advantage, and despite a surrendering a goal with 5 seconds remaining, took a 7-3 lead into halftime. In the 3rd the teams traded goals, with Morro Bay twice pushing the margin to five and the Titans cutting it back down to four on both occasions.

The 4th quarter was when the spectators on a rather frigid afternoon got a chance to warm up and get their blood pumping. Nipomo received man-up advantage at 6:16 and finally was able to score as it expired. Morro Bay counter-attacked but hit the crossbar. The Pirates forced a turnover, and on the ensuing trip, tried a tip play that had been successful all day. This time, however, the tip attempt from 2-meter man Kerry Kennedy was just saved by GK Luke Buchanan.

Alex Martinez drilled a power shot to pull the Titans to within two, and Morro Bay called a time-out with 4:21 remaining. They were unable to score on that possession, however, and Nipomo inched to single goal range when Zac Miller netted one with 3:53 left. A minute later though, Miller was excluded, and the Titans held off two excellent Pirate attacks - one on a save, and the second on a screaming skip shot that went just high.

Both squads had scoring chances in the last two minutes, but neither could convert.

Morro Bay [3,4,2,0- 9]: Goals - Ryan Kitzman 3, Kerry Kennedy 2, Grant Johnson 2, Marco Maffioli 1, Mac Reinhardt 1. Saves - 6.

Nipomo [0,3,2,3 - 8]: Goals - Alex Martinez 2, Zac Miller 2, Brian Araujo 1, David Caruso 1, Mechor De La Garza 1, Ian Brooks 1. Saves - 6.

Game 3: LPL Championship
Santa Ynez 14, Cabrillo 9   [STORY]

Before the game, several of the Pirates had a discussion with Head Coach Jake Kolkowski about whether or not he had brought a change of clothing, because they were planning on his entry into the pool after they won. They backed it up with a fiery performance in the pool and a jubilant celebration on the deck with a cold, and soaked, Kolkowski.

The Pirate defense was stifling as they repeatedly collapsed on Conq star Eduardo Cardenas, and GK Jordan Yarnell was terrific - making 10 stops and at least 1 steal. Offensively, the Santa Ynez passing was excellent with several goals scored after beautiful entry passes.

Much like last Wednesday the Pirates raced out to an early lead, this time 4-0 in the initial 5:31. Unlike last week, while Cabrillo was able to pull within a couple of points on two occasions (6-4, 8-6), this one never really seemed in doubt.

Cabrillo [1,4,2,2 - 9]: Eduardo Cardenas 5, Noah Caro 2, Phillip Naughton 1, Nick Matulis 1.

Santa Ynez [4,4,4,2]: Karl Fredrickson 3, Thomas Huddle 3, Antonio Barrett 2, Sawyer Crosby 2, Eric Illes 2, Greg Hatchell 1, Andrew Imari 1.
