There was a lot of this on Wednesday at the City of Lompoc Aquatic Center. |
On a somewhat chilly day in the Lompoc Valley, the action was inside. Each of the local contests featured a black vs blue match-up. Cabrillo water polo hosted Morro Bay at the CoLAC, and Cabrillo & Lompoc hoopsters battled each other five times at two locations - both boys & girls varsity squads dueled on the hill, while the lower divisions clashed in the valley.

Football
Cabrillo AD Dan Troup has informed LLR that he will be meeting with 5 individuals on Thursday about the vacant head football coach position at the school. He described two of them as 'a young guy from Templeton and a fellow from Santa Maria'. He stated his belief that Cabrillo folks would find the other 3 'interesting' - and they are !!
The other three? Dave Long, Bob Radford, and Don Willis. Willis, by the way, was at the Cabrillo wrestling match against Santa Maria Tuesday night.
Radford taught at Cabrillo from 1965 until his retirement from the school district in 1995. During that time he also coached football for 23 years until 1987. He resumed coaching at CHS in 2001 while also teaching for LUSD's adult education department. He was briefly the freshmen head football coach in 2004.

Morro Bay vs Cabrillo [at the CoLAC]
Cabrillo 14, Morro Bay 0
[Cab 7,1,4,2 - 14 MB 0,0,0,0 - 0]
The Pirates were over-matched and everybody in the building knew it, but it did not deter them from playing hard, determined polo for 4 quarters. The Conqs, however, avoided the temptation to play in a substandard manner against lesser competition.
Cabrillo pulled their horns in early. Corey McIntyre pulled most of his starters, midway through the 1st, although they would return in dribs and drabs as spot replacements for the backups. While curtailing the offense, the Conquistadores continued to play tenacious defense throughout the game.
Terry Brown, the Morro Bay Head Coach, noted the Conqs attitude - "Cabrillo played a real solid, respectful game. And we appreciate it."
Cabrillo scored three times in the 1st 2 minutes of play (Bray 2, Wulfestieg). They added 4 more in the rest of the period (Bray, Munoz, Stanton, Stangl), including one set up by a really nice pass by Vail to Stanton at 2 meters. It could have been worse, but Pirate keeper Nunes had several nice saves under duress.
The Conqs would record one more goal in the 2nd (Ogan), 4 in the 3rd (Talkin, Wulfstieg, Stangl, Wilkie), and 2 in the 4th (Vail & Talkin). The Pirates had an offensive flury of sorts at the end of the 1st half, but couldn't get the ball past replacement netminder Kinsley Edman who played about 3/4 of the game.
Cabrillo is slated to compete in the AG tournament this Friday & Saturday, before hosting Santa Ynez next Wednesday in a key LPL contest. Morro Bay is at Nipomo next week.
Cabrillo : Goals - Tori Bray 3, Sam Wulfstieg 2, Sam Munoz, Amanda Stanton, Abby Stangl 2, Kelly Ogan, Lili Talkin 2, Natalie Wilkie, Meghan Vail. Goalkeeping - Demi Ames, Kinsley Edman (5 saves).
Junior Varsity
Cabrillo 15, Morro Bay 2
[Cab 6,5,4,0 - 15 MB 0,1,0,1 - 2]
The JV match was more of the same, the Conqs supplemented an offensive slow-down with a no shot 4th Quarter. Cabrillo raced out to a 6-0 1st Quarter lead, and were up 8-0 with a couple of minutes remaining in the 1st half, when they stole the ball in the defensive 2 meter area. Morro Bay's Sterling Ellens, however, kept working, stole the ball back, and flipped it into the goal.
The Pirates would get their second goal on a nice build-up late in the 4th with Emily DesJardins making the shot. Cabrillo, meanwhile added 3 more in the 2nd & 4 in the 3rd, before the shot moratorium in the 4th. Frosh Ellery Wilkie did a very good job running the offense from the point, as well as being a defensive force throughout the game.
Conqs : Goals - Camryn Ranney 5, Istanie Seideman 3, Chaise Laffoon 2, Alia Carlon, Gillian Marsh, Natalia Hancock, Maddison Stangl, Sohyoung Petit.
Other LPL Teams

Both teams cranked it up in the 4th period, but the Braves couldn't dig themselves out of the hole they dug in the 2nd. After an 8-8 opening period, the Conqs took a 6 point lead in the second and were able to expand the margin by a point in each of the 3rd & 4th periods.
The teams combined for 37 4th Quarter points after scoring just 47 in the first 24 minutes.
The Conqs were able to get penetration against the Braves & draw fouls in the process - Cabrillo connected on as many FT as Lompoc was awarded.
Cabrillo was keyed by a big defensive performance from Sophia Stevens, and Gaby Baumgardner had one of her better nights offensively. Unfortunately, Baumgardner also had to leave the game very late in the the 4th quarter due to a shoulder injury.
