Off the Schneid [9 Jan]

Thursday, 9 January 2014

The Cabrillo girls soccer team has had an extremely frustrating season. Following 3 straight years of very deep runs in the playoffs, and facing a rather brutal schedule they lost 10 in a row to start things off, then had back-to-back ties in their two previous outings. Thursday afternoon they got off the schneid with a 4-1 win over Templeton.

It was part of a very successful afternoon for the local squads. All the teams playing at home in the valley won, and those on the road also did quite well.

[Note: We are still experiencing problems with video/photo uploads, editing updates, etc. . Obviously we hope to have these problems fixed soon.]

Injury Update: Cabrillo basketball player Gaby Baumgardner stated that while the shoulder injured in Wednesday night's game was feeling a lot better, she did not expect to be well enough to play Friday night against Templeton. Thus making a difficult task for the Conqs even harder.

Templeton at Cabrillo

Entering play on Thursday, the Cabrillo JV had just one win, the varsity had none. So for them both to win at the same time made it a big deal, for them both to post 4 goals made it huge.

Thursday, against the visiting Templeton Eagles, the varsity were able to generate some offense - recording 4 goals on the day as opposed to just 10 in the prior 12 games. The JV had done somewhat better posting 15 goals in 11 games.

Both units are in action on Saturday at home versus Sunny Hills.

Cabrillo 4, Templeton 1
[Halftime 1-0 Cabrillo]

Derrick Wong was mostly relieved to get the first of what he believes will be a high number of wins before the season is over. As he told the team after the loss to Lompoc back in December - "We are going to be a dangerous team in the playoffs."

While the rigorous preseason dealt the squad a flury of heavy blows, you go to the post-season based on what you do in league - and Cabrillo is now 1-1-1 in the LPL. Not great, but certainly with-in striking distance.

The Conq offense was finally able to demonstrate some firepower with three players scoring. The win was due to the fact that the "team was able to play as a unit", and was more "consistent", according to Coach Wong.

The Eagles Moises Jimenez thought his defensive line was "really solid" despite the the goals allowed.

Cabrillo had the early lead, but Templeton pulled even early in the second half.

The Conqs joy was muted a bit by an injury to Sierra Maldonado. She took a knock to the noggin on a hard foul with just a few minutes remaining in the game. Her status for future games is unknown.

The good news for Cabrillo, according to Coach Cindy Eisen is the "Overall team improvement. Their commitment to playing well, their willingness to pass, to build the shot, fundamentals really."

She was also pleased with the way players have stepped up to fill voids (3 starters were out vs Santa Maria) - specifically citing the sweeper position where Claira Caro ably filled in for starter Alee Puckett Thursday afternoon. Additionally she noted that the scoring bug has started to spread throughout the group - with Mallory Townsend getting her 4th point of the season and Alyssa Pablo netting shots in back-to-back games.

Conqs : Goals - Krista Eisen, Gabi Delgado, Mallory Townsend, Alyssa Pablo. Assists (Included)Mallory Townsend,   Goalkeeping - Brianna Gonzales (1H, then Def); Mallory Townsend (2H). Cards - 2 Yellow.

Boys Soccer

Nipomo at Lompoc

It was an outstanding day for the Braves on the field, but in many ways the big news for the Titans had nothing to do with soccer.

Nipomo JV coach Buddy Kickler was absent from the sidelines because he had surgery to remove a tumor from his neck. Oddly enough, one of the Braves JV coaches had similar surgery a while ago. Standing in for Buddy was his dad, Glen.

The other Titan news was that varsity head honcho, Billy Vinnedge, is the new Head Coach for the Allan Hancock College Mens Soccer team. Vinnedge plans to finish out this season at Nipomo and then evaluate his options. The seasons for Soccer are different at the two schools (AHC Fall, Nipomo Winter), so he may attempt to do both. He has already started the recruiting process at AHC.

Coach Vinnedge, who also runs a series of football kicking instruction camps in the summer and fall, said he may also help with the AHC football team.

On the field, though, it was all Braves, as both levels won by the day's popular score - 4-1.

Lompoc 4Nipomo 1
[Halftime 2-1 Lompoc]

Lompoc jumped out in front on a Juan Esqueda goal 12 minutes into the game, but the Titans evened the score when Mike Arevalo struck in the 21st minute. The Braves scored again before the half, and twice after the break to cruise to the victory.

Mike Burch, liked what he saw from his Braves, especially on defense. "They (Nipomo) have a really strong offense, and it took a good defense to stop it." he related after the game. He specifically mentioned the work of Chris Palacios, Joey Jacinto, and Francisco Morales. Offensively, Palacios had "2 assists and some really good passes" and Jose Cazares was "everywhere".

Lompoc [4-3-4, 2-0-1]: Goals/Assists - Ulyssess Cardona (12th Minute, Ricky Reyes), Victor Rodriguez (28th, Chris Polacios), Ricky Reyes (54th, Chris Polacios), Luis DeLaPalma (77th, Ulysses Cardona). Goalkeeping - Jose Cardenas (1H, 3 saves); Oscar Ramirez (2H, c. 5 saves). Cards - 1 Yellow.

Titans [4-12, 0-4]: Goals - Mike Arevalo (21st min). Assists - None. Goalkeeping - Jason Alvarado (80 min, 6 saves). Cards - None.

Lompoc 4Nipomo 1
[Halftime 1-1 Tie]

Coach Kickler thought his team played pretty well, but in the end just couldn't compete with Lompoc's speed. Nipomo scored first, but Lompoc answered with about 3 minutes left in the initial half, and out-ran the Titans in the second.

Lompoc : Goals/Assists - Pedro Garcia 2G/1A, Javier DeLaCueva 1G/2A, R Hunter 1G (Freekick). Goalkeeping - Michael Yang (c. 6 Saves). Defensive Mention - Arturo Nunes, Alfie Rubio.

Titans : Goals - Jaime Tapia. Assists - Marcos Carabantes. Goalkeeping - Humberto Ubias (c. 8 saves) replaced late in the game by Leandro Castillo.

[Halftime 1-0 Templeton]

Cabrillo eventually got the equalizer in the second half despite stellar work by Eagles GK Yusuke Yokota. Then they almost won it in the 2nd OT period, but
Matt Mosher made a diving header to clear the ball in the crease.
