It was Parent Appreciation Night at the Cabrillo Gymnasium. It served as a reminder that this Conq squad is very young, a conception that was reinforced by a talented and experienced passel of Pirates during the game.

Morro Bay at Cabrillo
Morro Bay 53, Cabrillo 33
[MB 12,18,11,12 - 53 Cab - 33]
In a competition for 2nd place in the LPL, Cabrillo practically dared any of the Pirates not named Sierra Schwellenbach to beat them. Almost everyone on the team responded, including Schwellenbach. It was one of the many signs that the Pirates are an experienced group of veterans - and Cabrillo is not.
The difference manifested itself in things as diverse as positioning on rebounds, ability to create an inside shot, when to speed up and when to slow down, anticipation on passes, angles to the ball, and a myriad of other ways.
Morro Bay started 4 seniors and a junior, Cabrillo only has 2 seniors on the team. In a year or two, the situation could easily be reversed.
Cabrillo actually led a couple of times in the 1st, 4-2 after a Gabby Baumgardner bucket, and 7-6 following a Sophia Stevens swoosh. The Pirates, however, turned up the pressure, got a succession of stops on defense, and scored 6 unanswered to end the quarter. They wouldn't be seriously challenged the rest of the way, although the Conqs played hard the entire game.
It wasn't a particularly well played contest on either side (i.e. 30 fouls, 32 turnovers), but Morro Bay seemed just a split second faster, a half-step quicker, and was almost always able to come up with an answer to what the Conqs were attempting. Cabrillo never could quite get the offense untracked.

Cabrillo had a lot of problems on the offensive end. Well, they had a lot of problems shooting the ball. They would make several nice passes but ultimately be unable to convert it into points.
Morro Bay had some problems as well, which allowed Cabrillo to hang around in the neighborhood in the 1st half, and the teams entered the main break with the Pirates up 7 (17-10).
And then nothing happened. Well, turnovers, missed shots, etc. . In the 3rd period, neither squad had a point, or a foul, until Haleigh Batty hit a trey with 2:49 remaining. That score cut the margin to just 4, but also energized a somnambulant Morro Bay group, rattled off 10 points in the final 2 minutes.

It is perhaps the ultimate sign of a blowout. A squad replaces their goalie and puts the starter in the field to try and get them a goal - and succeeds. Santa Ynez did just that, getting a score for senior goaltender Elaine Norcia. She was one of 10 SY Pirates that found the interior of the net, despite Jenele Martin rarely having more than 2 starters in the pool.
MB Pirates [1-9, 0-3]: Goals - Katie White 3, Tori White 2, Luna Bailey. Goalkeeping - Taryn Nunes (7 Saves).
SY Pirates [10-14, 2-1]: Goals - Leah Parlato 2, Lily Riley 2, Emily Berman 2, Reagan Mroz 2, Eliza Nash 2, Elaine Norcia, Sophie Stanfield, Erika Krause, Emma deGoede, Kailey Holmlund. Goalkeeping - Elaine Norcia (6 Saves); Hannah Rogers (4 Saves).
