Winnin' Ain't Easy, But It Sure Is Fun [9 Oct 2014]

Girls Volleyball

Amanda Stanton was very happy indeed after she served the last several points of set #4, helping bring Cabrillo back from a 22-24 match point deficit to a 26-24 set win and match victory.

Cabrillo vs Morro Bay

 at Cabrillo HS Gym

Varsity
Cabrillo 3, Santa Maria* 1
[25-11,21-25,25-13, 26-24]

This was terrific match, with Santa Maria playing as well as I have seen them in the last 5 years. There were some incredible rallies, momentum swings, and relatively small, but extremely vocal cheering sections on both sides.

But Cabrillo had something extra on their side Thursday night - and her name is Fallon Wynne. It wasn't even necessarily her impressive stats, though she had some. Or the fact that she was all over the court digging, passing, setting, and crushing the ball. It was simply the level of confidence the team played with when she was in the game.

Fallon lowers the hammer -

It was a frequent occurrence when Cabrillo needed someone to make a play - cue Fallon Time. Almost every time Santa Maria put the pressure on Cabrillo they responded - and usually it was Wynne. During one bit of the 4th set for instance, the Conqs were down 2-4 and the Saints were playing well. Wynne had kills on 4 of the next 7 points and Cabrillo had the lead.

In spite of the loss Santa Maria Head Coach, Rogelio Gonzalez was extremely proud of the way his squad played stating "They played every point like it was the last one of their lives". They were certainly very active, especially on defense, demonstrating very quick hands and reactions.

The Saints had opportunities, but lacked the firepower of Cabrillo. While they had the will to win, they did not have the will of Wynne.

These were two of the better rallies during the match. Probably top 10, but not top 5. There are on camera, and relatively focused.

The games on Thursday marked the end of the first of two LPL round-robin series. So we are quickly approaching the end of Jim Hilliard's reign as Head Honcho of the Conqs. He plans to step down at the end of this season, and turn the reins over to assistant Sydnee Brown.

Cabrillo 2 vs Santa Maria* 0
[25-14,25-19]

Game 1 - Santa Maria had 3 points on offense, and Cabrillo led 18-5 before the Saints were able to really get anything going defensively either. In Game 2, Sm doubled their offensive point total to 6 (Cabrillo had 11), but it was mostly a side-out contest.

Nipomo vs Lompoc

at Paisola Pavillion, LHS

Varsity
Lompoc 3, Nipomo* 2
[25-23,25-17,23-25,6-25,15-7]

Lompoc inched closer to their first playoff appearance in years by concluding the initial LPL round with a 4-3 record. It was not easy though, as the Braves saw what was looking like straight set victory over Nipomo turn into a 5-set nail-biter.

The girls showed a lot of resilience to come back after losing a squeeker in the third, and being rocked back on their heels in set #4.

It has been a long week for new Head Coach Nicole Rudolph and long-time assistant Ramona Thomas, who have been dealing with the aftermath of Aaron Batula's departure. Both have done an excellent job of keeping the program together and on track. See More HERE and HERE.

On the court, it was another fine performance by Chyanne Thomas. She was both the kill (13) and dig (8) leaderCheyenne Marmalejo and Lexie Barbosa were also on form. In addition to their usual high quality work throughout the match, the pair combined for 7 aces in the crucial game 5. In that set, Marmalejo served 6 points in succession, followed by 6 more from Barbosa to put the Braves up 11-2.

Braves [6-5,4-3]: #8 Chyanne Thomas 13 kills, 8 digs, ace; #22 Cheyenne Marmalejo 8 kills, 5 blocks, 4 aces, 3 assists, dig; #2 Lexie Barbosa 20 assists, 5 aces, 3 digs, block, kill; #19 Yolanda Anguiano 7 digs, 3 aces; #21 Yoshary Montelongo 4 kills, dig, ace; #27 LaRose Lewis 2 kills; #23 Paola Morales 2 digs; #15 Alivia Sawyer 1 block.

Titans 1-11, 1-7Lacy LeBlanc 24 assists, 8 digs, 8 aces, 2 kills; Kendra Jackson 14 digs, 9 aces, 2 assists, kill; Gwen Mename 9 kills, 2 blocks.
Jourdan Reynolds 12 digs, 3 aces, 3 kills; Whitney Bland 6 kills, 4 assists, 14 digs, ace. LeBlanc also had 8 straight service points in the 4th set.

Junior Varsity

Lompoc just never could quite string points together, while Nipomo managed a few short runs.

Freshman
Lompoc 2, Nipomo* 0
[25-10,25-15]

Lompoc led 21-5 in the first set, before allowing Nipomo to regain some momentum. That slump carried over into the 2nd set as the Titans stormed out of the gate to take a 6-1 lead. But the Braves were able to quell the surge, scored 11 in a row, and never looked back.

A nice Game 1 point by the Frosh -

Cabrillo vs Morro Bay

Varsity
Cabrillo* 15, vs Morro Bay* 3
at Cabrillo HS

The Cabrillo singles players became the latest victims of Czech Exchange student Bety Hermanova. Otherwise, it was a relatively routine afternoon on the Cabrillo campus - if you discount all the kids in costume for the Homecoming Parade.

It was also the last tennis visit to Cabrillo by Morro Bay's effervescent stalwart Tess Badrigan, who seems like a 6th year senior. She had some of the better results for the Pirates on Thursday, but couldn't pull off a win.

Rikki Patel & Sierra Hohimer both won twice. Kaeli Jones won her only 2 sets, before turning court #3 over to 'Anaconda' Heath to try her luck against Hermanova. Hohimer, a freshman, has been playing very well this season. Long-time residents of the area (AKA old people) may recall her uncle Donnie who was a running back at Lompoc for Mike Warren.

at Huyck Stadium

Don't have all the final info yet, but with 3:34 left in the 1st Quarter Lompoc led 20-0 after the Braves scored on their first 3 possessions. While pounding the Greyhounds with their rushing attack, mostly using #5 Ruben Cortez, they went with a play action pass, and hit the #33 FB Devin Villalobos in the flat for a 12 yard TD.

On the ensuing Atascadero possession, #14 LB (& QB) Xavier Nix beautifully anticipated a screen pass to the left side, picked it and raced 47 yards for the score. After an Atascadero punt, Lompoc picked up a pair of 1st downs running, and looked like the would pass. It was however, a superbly executed draw play, and #2 Manzo took it 52 yards to the house for score number three.
