Lompoc Blue Keeps It Going at Bickmore [7 Oct 2014]

Tuesday, October 7, 2014

It was also a good day for Cabrillo - Rikki Patel was her usual stellar self and almost triple-bageled the Titans.

It has been a good stretch for the Lompoc Braves. A win over Cabrillo and an excellent performance versus Morro Bay propelled volleyball player Chyanne Thomas to Female Athlete of the Week honors, while another fine effort in the Braves 42-22 victory over Righetti on Friday earned Derrick Portis the Male Athlete of the Week.

Also on Monday, Girls Golf topped Santa Maria at La Purisima and both the varsity and JV Girls Tennis squads rolled over Coast Union.

On Tuesday, the Girls Tennis units were again in action. And while the margins were closer, a lot closer, both won.

Girls Tennis

The Lompoc Girls Tennis squad had a nail-biter win last week at home, but cruised yesterday on the road at Cambria. Tuesday it was back to "high pucker factor" competition at home.

Lompoc vs. Orcutt Academy

Since OA was established the two teams have met on a regular basis and there has been one constant - the Braves never won. The two met in Santa Maria back on September 11th. It was the LPL season opener for both - and the first ever league game for the Spartans who won 12-6.

That, as it turns out, would be the final victory of the streak as the Braved pulled a remarkable comeback Tuesday at the Dave Bickmore Courts.

Meanwhile, Cabrillo was routing a Nipomo team that was not used to the rough handling.

Varsity

Always nice to win - Korina Cervantes & Edith Elenes

After 2 rounds, the score was tied in both sets and games. The singles progressed rapidly, and the teams split the 1st 2 sets of the 3rd round putting Lompoc up a game (7-7, 56-55), but the Spartans took the 9th singles contest for an 8-7 (61-59) lead.

Just the 3 final round doubles sets remained. The 6 prior match-ups had been split - including a 7-6 [10-8] tie-breaker win by the visiting Spartans in the clash of #1 duos.

The Match-ups:Court 4 - OA #1s Kelsey Namba/Keona Pablo vs Lompoc #3s Korina Cervantes/Edith Elenes

Court 5 - OA #2s Kortni Gilbertson/Maddie Jones vs Lompoc #1s Ofelia Chavez/Reina Montegi

Court 6 - OA #3s Sarah Lopez-Tenley Childs vs Lompoc #2s Gessell Lopez/Vanessa Esqueda

When most folks got over to the doubles courts, play was just underway. All 3 sets were at 1-0 with Lompoc up on 5 & 6. That changed over the next few games. While the Braves moved out to a 4-1 lead on 6, they fell behind on 4 (1-2) and 5 (2-3).

Lopez/Esqueda forged ahead on court 6 winning 6-1, tying the match at 8 sets apiece, but with Lompoc leading by 3 games. It seemed likely to be a moot point however since the score of the other two sets fell to 2-5.

The Lompoc supporters were looking a bit glum, but they reckoned without the 'Battlin Braves'. Cervantes/Elenes on 4 fought back in a pair of marathon games to cut the differential to 4-5. Chavez/Montegi seemed to catch fire - racing back to a 6-5 lead. The result of those comebacks being that the Spartans could no longer win the match on games -they HAD to win both sets.

After another game, Cervantes/Elenes finally fell 4-6, but while that gave OA a 1 set lead, Lompoc was ahead by a single game.  Quite soon after that Chavez/Montegi completed their resurrection, scoring a 7-5 victory for the match win. The two pairs outscored the Spartans 7-1 down the stretch and won by 3 games.
