Lompoc Bowl Game ? {Updated}{Update 2}

The Braves victory Friday night has created some speculation about their participation in the CIF State Div III Bowl Game.

Here's the skinny-
To play in the bowls you have to a) win your Section Title, and b) be picked by the selection committee. Lompoc was ranked 10th in most recent [8 Dec] ratings by CalHi (see quote below).

On the Bubble: Arroyo (El Monte) 9-2*, Azusa 10-1*, Beckman (Irvine) 8-5, Bishop 12-1, Cantwell-Sacred Heart (Montebello) 10-1*, Chowchilla 9-4*, Coalinga 10-2, Corona del Mar 10-2-1*, Covina 10-2*, Dos Palos 10-2*, Loara (Anaheim) 9-1-1*, Nordhoff (Ojai) 12-1*, Olympian (Chula Vista) 10-2*, Segerstrom (Santa Ana) 9-2*.

Notes & Highlights

•This division is now wide open after Madison of San Diego stunned previously undefeated and long-time No. 1Valley Center 40-14 on Monday in the San Diego Section championships combined with last week’s No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 teams also losing.

•Any one of the top seven teams can make a case, but if things fall right for Bishop’s, the La Jolla school could go to the bowl championships as the Division IV representative from the south (see South Division IV below).

•Here is the argument for Madison taking such a big leap and being in Bowl consideration: 1. Madison beat a Valley Center team that not only appeared to be a shoo-in, it did so convincingly as junior QB Chase Knox tossed for 385 yards and three TDs. 2. The Warhawks avenged their only loss in a big, big way, crushing Olympian of Chula Vista in the semis, 48-7. 3. Valley Center still has those wins earlier over Los Alamitos and La Quinta from the Southern Section so beating the Jags looks even better for Madison. Also keep in mind that the San Diego teams have played twice since the last bowl game rankings were done. If they were done after last Thursday’s semifinals, Madison would have no doubt leaped up into the top five.

•Upon closer inspection, South of Torrance goes way up this week, too. The Spartans’ only loss is to Palos Verdes (which made it into the CIFSS Northern Division quarterfinals) and they are going for the CIFSS Northwest Division title against Lompoc, which is the team that knocked off previous No. 2 Nordhoff.

•Paraclete, with 818 students, could be competing with Garden Grove, with more than 2,300 enrollment, for a bowl berth if both win their Southern Section divisions this weekend. Garden Grove’s enrollment is larger than a lot of the Division II schools, but since enrollment only matters in Div. IV, the Argos have as much a chance as any team still in consideration."

{UPDATE: Monrovia def. Whittier Chr. 38-8 for the Mid-Valley Championship & Paraclete topped Alpha League rivals Sierra Canyon 14-7.}

The current situation is -
1. Madison (San Diego) [SD Sect] 12-1 Done. Eligible - YES
2. South (Torrance) [SS Div X] 12-2 Done. Eligible - NO
3. Paraclete (Lancaster)[SS Div XII] Plays Sat Night. Eligible - ?
4. Valley Center 11-1* [SD Sect] Done. Eligible - NO
5. Garden Grove 13-1 [SS Div IX] Beat Beckman 31-30 (Done). Eligible - YES
6. Monrovia 11-2 [SS Div XI]Plays Whittier Chr. Sat Night. Eligible - ?
7. Bishop’s (La Jolla) 12-0 [SD Sect] Beat Parker 20-9(Done). Eligible - YES
8. Washington (Easton) 10-2 [CS
] Beat Coalinga 42-21(Done). Eligible - YES
9. Whittier Christian (La Habra) 12-1 [SS Div XI]Plays Sat Night. Eligible - ?
10.Lompoc 10-3 [SS Div X] Beat South 20-14. Done. Eligible - YES

With three higher rated teams already eligible and two more likely, the Braves chances are not good. Even if Bishop's gets moved to Div IV, and the argument that the SS Div X Champs outrank SS Div XI & SS Div XII winners is successful, there are still three formidable obstacles.

Garden Grove (13-1) won in Div IX. Washington (Central Section) is 10-2, with both losses by a single point to Central Valley powers Dos Palos & Kingman. While the SD Section Champions, Madison, are 12-1, ranked #1, and knocked off the prior #1. Neither of those two sections are likely to support an 11-3 SS team over their own.

So a Lompoc Bowl Game ? Very unlikely, but not impossible.

CalHi will be posting their updated rankings before the selection meeting Sunday morning.
