Invasion of the Royals [10 Sep 2014]

Wednesday, September 10, 2014

It was a beautiful day in the valley, and a couple hundred harriers decided to go for a run. I did not join their enterprise, but I did watch some of them at River Park where the Braves hosted the Lompoc Invitational. Cabrillo, meanwhile, hit the road to Oak Canyon Community Park near Oak Park HS north of the Agoura Hills for the Oak Park Invitational.

The aquatic Braves were also in action - Lompoc hosting St Joseph in Water Polo at the COLAC.

Lacei Sanders and Claudia Carrillo - Usually running, but on Wednesday handing out the finishing cards.

Lompoc Invitational at River Park [B/G, V/JV] 3pm
[Lompoc, Orcutt Academy (Girls), Santa Maria, San Marcos]

The visiting San Marcos squad ruled the roost at the river. Coach Lawrence Stehmeier's Runnin' Royals raced to 3 1st place finishes, with clean sweeps in two of them. The only other runner to break into the top 5 in any race was the Braves Diego Ramirez who took 2nd in the Boys Varsity race.

The girls race lost some luster when two of Braves top scoring threats, Lacei Sanders & Claudia Carrillo, did not run. Both were pulled from the start list due to concerns about exacerbating pre-existing injuries.

Royal Walker Odell posted the best time of the day (16:19), well off course record (14:27) Michael Coe [Cal] set back in 2005.  Adilene Adalpa led the girls with a nice 18:31 trip past the pond, but did not challenge Addi Zerrenner's [Arizona] pace from last year (17:36).
