Good day for Cabrillo

It was a good day for the hilltop dwellers as the Conqs beat St Joseph in the pool and on the links, thumped the Mission Prep Royals at home and on the road, and gave the Atascadero Greyhounds quite a tussle in the gym.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

This was an outright dandy of a match!! Traditionally the Conquistadors have had real problems with the Greyhounds, not having taken a game off them in the recollection of Head Coach Jim Hilliard. That would change this night. Cabrillo would provoke amazement, wonder, and more than a little nervousness, and perhaps even a tad bit of fear in the visitors before they were through.

Atascadero won the hard-fought 1st game 25-22 and likely thought that things would follow the usual pattern - games getting progressively easier as the match wears on. But Cabrillo struck back, and with a determined flury at the end, won game 2 by the same score 25-22. Then they did it again. After the 3rd game was tied up at 7 all, a Conq spurt pushed them to a 19-10 lead. A furious counterattack, trimmed the lead to just one point (21-20), but Cabrillo held off the charge winning game 3 by the now familiar score - 25-22.

With the home team up 2-1, Atascadero wasn't about to let up, and they flew out of the gate to a quick 7-2 advantage, then stretched it to 18-8. Would Cabrillo crumble? No!! They rolled the margin back to 4 points (22-18), but like the Greyhounds in game 3 couldn't quite reel them in, and dropped the 4th 25-18.

And so to the deciding 5th set - where the first to 15 wins it. The teams battled to a 4-4 tie before the homestanding Conqs began to inch ahead. At 9-4, Atascadero called their last timeout, but Cabrillo won the next point as well. The Greyhounds did not panic, however, and slowly began to squeeze the gap with a series of mini-runs [10-5, 11-7, 12-9], eventually narrowing the margin to two [12-10]. The Conqs pushed back - creating a smidgen of space [13-10], but giving it back [13-11], taking it again [14-11] - CABRILLO MATCH POINT !!! Alas, it was not to be, Atascadero scored the next 5 in a row to take the victory.

After the contest, veteran (c.15 years) Greyhound coach Trent Lunceford was puummped up - "That was a really fun game!!, They were very scrappy. That's the best Cabrillo team we've EVER played! " Jim Hilliard, was more subdued, but really liked the effort his team put forth, "Our defense was on fire ! We never could establish any offensive rhythm, but we scrapped & scrapped, and Lauren was all over the court."

Lauren would be 6'2" senior Middle Blocker Lauren Pluim who attacked, dug, slammed, tipped, blocked, served, passed, and otherwise tormented the Greyhounds all night. She has had contact with a few colleges, but would dearly love to go to Cal-Poly because she wants to be an engineer. The Mustangs under 1st yr Head Coach Sam Crossen are 1-4 and could do a whole lot worse than one Miss Pluim.

The Braves put together a respectable performance on Tuesday. They looked like they belonged on the court with the Bearcats, but they just couldn't quite finish. There were numerous long rallies that Lompoc lost, they made the visitors nervous on several occasions. The other problem the young Braves squad had was long serving runs. In Game 1, they had closed to within 2 points (11-9) only to see Paso score 10 of the next 12 points. In Game 2, with the score 6-8, the Bearcats were able to get the side-out (6-9) and PR senior Kaylee Sonnikson was able to serve 10 points in a row (6-19). There was another run to start Game 3, as PR raced out to a 7-2 lead and Lompoc never recovered.

The Braves frosh lost 0-2 (15-25, 18-25), but the JV WON in straight sets 2-0 (25-18, 25-17).
Lompoc looks to rebound against Coastal Christian [No Frosh Game] at home on Wednesday.

The Knights almost came back in game 1 - tying it at 23 with 4 consecutive points, but couldn't sustain the momentum. The Pirates were down by 5 in game 3 several time and did come back.

The Conqs forged a 4-1 lead at the first break despite missing 6 shots in the quarter - many of them easy break-aways. They did somewhat better in the 2nd stanza and led 7-2 at the half. The Knights made it briefly interesting in the third, closing the gap to 7-4, as the Conqs continued their problematic shooting, but Cabrillo scored three unanswered goals in the first 74 seconds of the 4th. Head Coach Joel Jory began subbing in players at the start of the 2nd period, eventually playing each of his 22 squad members before re-inserting some starters in the 4th when play began to get rather sloppy.

The Pirates, ranked #7 in CIF-SS Division 6, raced out to an 8-0 1st quarter lead and never looked back.

The Morro Bay Pirates broke open a tight contest with a 4-1 4th quarter.

Both sides struggled with what one individual called an "Oak Tree infestation" on the course. Spending a lovely day hacking around the beautiful VCC course, they failed to simply hit it in the fairway and avoid the arbors. ;)

Conqs: Singles - Kelsie Atkin/Rikky Patel/Julie deVenoge - each swept 3 sets. Doubles - Audrianna Laporte & Kayla Sandoval/Alex Sief & Morgan Coffin/Morgan Williams & Emily Wasson/ Maddie McDonough & Krystel Delos Reyes swept.

Junior Varsity (at Cabrillo HS) 
Cabrillo was leading the contest 17-0 when I had to leave. In the final set of the day the Royals were up 3-2, but the Conqs had won game 5 & were leading game 6. The only really close set occurred when a Cabrillo substitute in singles fell behind 5-1, bur rallied for a 7-5 victory.

In Santa Maria
St. Joseph (3-0) 17, Lompoc 1
Singles - Claire Bouquet defeated Emily Gracyk 6-2, Marienne Tobin 6-1, and Erica Gracyk 6-3, respectively. Sajni Patel defeated the same three by scores of 6-1, 6-1, and 6-0.
Doubles - Dana Bouquet/Dani Malin, Gaby Brunell/Julianne Ortega, & Rylie Will/Rene Ferini were similarly efficient.

Junior Varsity (at Dave Bickmore Courts)
The Braves were struggling in this one too - down 1-5 in the initial round of play.

The doubles team of Sydney Sima and Amber Petersen swept 6-2, 6-0, 6-1 to lead the Greyhounds (2-0).
Aspen Bethel won both her singles sets 6-4, 6-1, and the doubles team of Sierra Walcott and Lulu Mack won two of their three sets.

Morro Bay: Singles - Sierra Wilcox took her 2nd [7-6 (7-3)] & 3rd sets [6-4], Amanda Newport won two of her three sets [7-5, 6-2], Tess Badrigian won a set [6-4].
Warriors: Kate Hardisty [6-3, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3)] & Jessica Owens/Genesis Salache [6-1, 6-1, 6-2] swept amid frequent substitutions.
