Girls Volleyball
Santa Maria at Lompoc
(at Bryan Ayer Court)
Lompoc 3, Santa Maria 0
[27-25, 25-8, 25-18] [STORY]
A night after playing some really good volleyball against Templeton, Lompoc decided they didn't need to versus the Saints. The scrappy visitors from Santa Maria nearly pulled out a win in the 1st Game, before the Braves woke up, and fended off a pair of set points.
They played better in Game 2, and there were significant substitutions in Game 3.
Braves [2-6 LPL]: Chyanne Thomas 12 kills, Christina Landthaler 4 kills, Lauren Powell 6 aces (and 'lots' [c. 25] of service points - including 10 in a row to end Game 2).
Libero Danessa Bagasol (0) and Vanessa Valencia (6) were big for the Saints |
Saints [0-7 LPL] : Vanessa Valencia 5 kills; Danessa Bagasol 6 digs and dozens of serve receptions; Vanessa Guzman 3 kills, 2 aces.

Lompoc 2, Santa Maria 0
[25-10, 25-9]
The JV put together a couple of nice games. In Game 1 they actually trailed, falling behind 3-0, but got a side-out and 3 service points to go up 4-3. They would lead 8-4 and 20-10, before closing it out.
Game 2 saw a Lompoc quick start as they raced out to leads of 6-0, 16-6, and 22-9, winning 25-9
Shance Starr did it all for the Braves - including this 2-handed stuff block in Game 1. |
Shance Starr had a 6 service run in the 1st and served out the match in game 2. Libero Katelyn Villalobos served out Game 1 with 7 consecutive, and Marena Lundy had 10 service points in the two sets.
... and this monster kill in Game 2. |

Cabrillo at Lompoc
(at the City Of Lompoc Aquatic Center)
Cabrillo 21, Lompoc 1
[Cab 5,5,7,4 - 21 Lom 0,1,0,0 - 1]
The rebuilding of the Lompoc program continues, but this wasn't really much of a contest. Cabrillo Head Coach Jeff Dacus didn't allow his regular starters to get wet until the 4th period, and they had strict instructions not to shoot until 5 seconds or less remained on the shot clock. Some of them, leading scorer Eduardo Cardenas for example, never took a shot at all.
Alex Hamner got Cabrillo going in both halves - scoring 4 (including the initial three) in the 1st, and 3 in the 3rd. Denis Palutka had the other 1st period goal and tallied 2 in each of the next two quarters. Ben Wulfestieg scored in the 2nd & 4th, with Sam Andrews adding 2 in the 3rd and Noah Caro 2 in the 4th. Jack Rhodes and Gerardo Diaz scored in the 2nd, Joel Larson in the 4th.
Cabrillo also had a half-dozen shots hit the posts & cross-bar.
Sam Reep served in goal for Cabrillo and almost never saw action. Javier Hernandez fired a shot at goal for the Braves in the 2nd, it deflected off Reep and floated into the goal for Lompoc's only tally. Reep faced 2 other serious shots - one hit the post in the 3rd, the other he stopped in the 4th.
Alex Hamner was also the Cabrillo sprinter to get the ball to start the quarter.
Conqs [14-8, 3-0 LPL]: Goals - Alex Hamner 7, Denis Palutka 5, Ben Wulfestieg 2, Noah Caro 2, Sam Andrews 2, Jack Rhodes, Gerardo Diaz, Joel Larson. Saves - Sam Reep 1.
Palutka squeezes in a back-hander in the 3rd period.
Braves [0-3 LPL]: Goal - Javier Hernandez. Saves - None.
Junior Varsity
Cabrillo 11, Lompoc 7
[Cab 4,3,3,1 - 11 Lom 1,2,2,2 - 7]
The JV contest, as it often is, was a much better game. Cabrillo looked to run away early, scoring the 1st 4 goals of the 1st period, but the two teams played even after that early surge.
Cabrillo dominated the mid-pool, but were repeatedly stymied by the Braves defense in close. Lompoc had 3-4 field deflections, but the big weapon was the 'Great Wall of Jamal'.
Jamal Whitaker |
Lompoc frosh Jamal Whitaker is not a big guy, but he played a huge game Wednesday. He had 10 saves, and repeatedly caused Conq shooters to alter shots or pass. Several of the saves were at point-blank range, with others on 2-on-1 break-aways.
Braves : Goals - Austin Nixa 5, Eriberto Ramirez, Andrew Waite. Saves - Jamal Whitaker 10.
