Lompoc vs Templeton
Lompoc 15, Templeton 3
at the Dave Bickmore Courts,
Braves []:
Singles [7-2] -
#1 Emily Gracyk 3-0 (6-1, 6-1, 6-1);
#2 Marielle Tabin 2-1 (6-1, 5-7, 6-4);
#3 Erica Gracyk 2-1 (2-6, 6-4, 6-2).
Emily Gracyk played some really good tennis and swept easily. Marielle Tabin played well, but had a bit of a hiccup. Erica Gracyk was down 4-1 to both the #1 & #2, the #1 got away, but Erica rallied for a 6-4 win against the #2.
Sofia Carillo & Karina Cervantes |
Doubles [8-1] -
#1 Genesis Garza/Erin Gracyk 1-1 (4-6, * , 6-1);
* Collette Capitelli/Noemi Diaz 1-0 (6-2);
#2 Gessell Lopez/Edith Elenes 3-0 (6-2, 6-1, 6-3);
#3 Sofia Carillo/Karina Cervantes 3-0 (6-2, 6-2, 6-1).
The #3's, Sofia Carillo & Karina Cervantes were called up from the JV and played well Tuesday in the big reshuffle. They were then tossed into a 'challenge match' on Wednesday and won 6-4. Thursday's doughnut-winning performance certainly doesn't hurt their chances of sticking with the varsity.

Good grades earned a pair of players some court time, and the team's victory earned them a stopover at the SLO Farmer's Market on the way back home.
Seldom used subs Valerie Laufer & Lourdes Cortez earned their way into the line-up in unusual fashion. When grades came out the team average was a quite respectable 3.70. Laufer and Cortez, however, each posted a 4.25.
Coach Jim Steffey thought that deserved a reward, so he paired them together for the 1st time, and sent them out as his #3 doubles. They responded by winning 2 of 3 sets - including a grueling Tie-breaker that took over an hour and became the last match of the day.

It was not a great day in the pool for the locals.
Morro Bay 17, Lompoc 1
[MB 5,2,6,4 - 17 Lom 1,0,0,0 - 1]
Lompoc simply isn't up to the level of swimming required. The program is making progress since being reconstituted, but they're not there yet.
Pirates : Goals - Ryan Kitzman 9, Alex McKen 3, Kai Schwenike 3, Cole Baskic, Travis Chirman. Goalkeeping - Jack Krull was his usual stout self in goal.Braves : Goal - Gary Berleau. Goalkeeping - Kyle Robinson had some saves but was frequently under duress.

[MB 4,7,0,4 - 15 Lom 0,0,1,0 - 1]
The Braves could have made this one much closer, but they did not discover this concept called 'Defense' until after halftime. They out-scored the Pirates 1-0 in the 3rd, but tired in the later half of the 4th - giving up some cheap goals late - including 2 in the final 47 seconds.
In the 1st half, Morro Bay simply had far too many occasions in which shooters were left unchallenged for wide open shots.
Pirates :
Goals - Jack Malzone 7, Evan Weisberg 3, Julian Putnam 2, Lucas Jokavich 2, Taylor Freeh.
Goalkeeping - Austin Pask had a good day, collecting a number of steals and stopping a few shots. Lompoc didn't make him do a lot of work.
Braves :
Goal - Austin Nixa.
Goalkeeping - Jamel Whitaker must have thought he was living the movie "Under Siege" in the 1st half. He allowed 4 goals in the initial period, but stopped as many. In the 2nd quarter, opponents would simply stop about 6-7 meters out, have 4-5 seconds to make multiple fakes, and then blast, dink, lob, etc. the ball at the net. Even then he stopped a few. The second half was MUCH better, as field players started putting pressure on the ball and getting their hands up for blocks & shielding.

Lompoc Head Coach Aaron Batula pointed out that many of the Pirates have been playing volleyball for much longer than the Braves. It showed on Thursday.
Lompoc didn't play poorly, but as Pirate Coach Chip Fenega put it, the Santa Ynez girls played "Smooth". He went on to say that the Pirates had "Good serves. Kept the ball in - and played really good defense" they also had "a lot of girls on the front line who could get side-outs".
They had a lot of players, period. Even with 3 out, they had 16 available Thursday evening.
Santa Ynez was able to keep the ball alive and simply outlast Lompoc on numerous rallies.
PIrates [7-3, 4-0 LPL]: Taylor Nation 22 service points/8 aces, 12 digs, 5 kills; Alexandra Carlson 26 assists, 2 aces. Jivka Grozeva 8 kills. Kassidy Hamer 6 kills. Taylor Gregg 7 digs - including one that had had her Coach fired up. "Did you see that one she had in the 3rd game. She just laid out over here for it and somehow got it up".
Braves [1-9, 1-4 LPL]: Chyanne Thomas 8 kills; Heidi Chavez 3 kills; Yolanda Anguiano 7 digs.

The Pirate JV had 16 girls suit up, but Coach Tom Right had special praise for two of them. Outside Hitter Maddie Snow had a good all-around game, including 5 kills, and Setter Belen Buenrostro controlled the flow of the offence and had about 10 assists.
Lompoc Coach Monie Thomas was not impressed with her team's performance, stating simply "We can do better".
